Lenovo X Series ThinkPad :: ThinkVantage Toolbox Won't Run On X61s - Win7 X64
Aug 14, 2010
I booted my X61s today after not running it for 2-3 months. It gave me an error right after the Toolbox splash screen: "ThinkVantage Toolbox has stopped working." It keeps popping up every 5 minutes or so. I've updated my ThinkVantage technology drivers to the latest rev. but to no effect. Below is the detail of the error.
Description:
Stopped working

I realize my beloved Thinkpad is pretty much an antique, but I've been struggling with the Lenovo power manager utility after a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium.it seems like the Lenovo PM and the native Win 7 power management can have conflicting values for similar settings (like low and critical battery levels, for instance).
But mainly, I can't seem to get the battery maintenance functions in the Lenovo PM to do anything. If I tell it to manage charge level for maximum life, the battery charges to 100% and just stays there. If I use the laptop on battery and put it back on charge, same thing -- it just charges to 100% and stays there.
Also, the battery reset function doesn't seem to do anything either. It's kind of hard to tell if it's even running. What seems to happen is that I'll go through the steps, and the large button slowly flashes. Does that mean it's running? But in any case, nothing happens. The battery just sits there fully charged.

I purchased a new L540 running Windows 7 and enrolled a finger. I can use the fingerprint to unlock but not to login. I've reviewed forum postings that suggest that I need to Change Biometric Settings, however the are set as "Biometrics On, Allow Users to log on to Windows using their Fingerprints." I note that the fingerprint software on the L540 is different than my 2 yr old W520, which had a way different interface.

I researched I need the Intel SATA AHCI Driver for performing a clean Windows 7 installation
I tried:
1. Mobile Express Chipset SAAT AHCI controler drivers from the (a) Intel websites (b) Lenovo website and (c) extracting drivers from running system
2. tried supplying drivers on DVD/CD and USB
3. tried to integrate drivers into Windows 7 Installation using RT7Lite
4. did bios update
5. switched from AHCO to compatible mode
In any case it finds the driver as the correct one (when I click hide drivers that are not compatible, the one remains). But always displays no driver found and doesn't continue setup.
This seems to be a bug!!!
1. Is there a way to fix this and perform a clean Windows 7 installation without recovery?
2. Am I trying the wrong driver, but have to install a driver for a different device first???
I am about to replace the HDD with an SDD and there can not use recovery!

I bought my lenovo G460 with nvidia M310 (with hdmi) this year and have not been able to get the hdmi port to work.
I have two lcd displays one in our lab and another one at home (LG 2361V-PF) which have hdmi connections in the back.
In the beginning I was able to get my notebook to work on the display in our office. However, now both displays (work+home) are not working.
I have tried to reinstall latest nvidia drivers as of 2010-11-02 (ver. 8.16.11.8990) from lenovo, completely restore Operating system and tried different hdmi cables.
I have even tried to use original drivers and also downgrade that to a lower version all with no luck.
I have even taken my LG LCD display to the LG After Service Warranty office and have found no issues wrong with the Monitor itself.
I am sure I have taken all the trouble-shooting methods into consideration so a simple question is... Is the hdmi port defective?

I tried to install a new version of Win7 on my ideapad U300s from a usb that set to be a bootable device containing *iso file.
I also set USB as first boot priority in BIOS setting, of course. But when the installation began, I canceled them all and restarted my laptop but found it troubled.
Here is its error report.
From then, I can no longer boot my laptop from USB as well as enter BIOS setting to set back HDD as first boot priority.
Both Enter/ESC make it restart and then turn to this dumb black screen.
I think I should remove the BIOS battery to turn BIOS setting into its default, shouldn't I?

I turn on my laptap and it start up normally. All are loaded up in the homescreen except the cursor which keeps on loading ( its like when you refresh). All keys are not working except to the CapsLock key, the touchpad and trackpoint ( color red) are working.
I remove the power source and battery to shut it down but it doesn't shut down! Now it is running for 5 minutes, and the screen still ON, continue to refresh. How to shut this down and restart.

I have a x60s (t2400, 2gb ram) as a spare laptop (also just because i really like it).i know there are more models and that the cpu is solderd onto the mainboard. if i want a t7200 cpu, can i then just replace the entire mainboard? or does that later model have diffrent cooling wich my t2400 doesnt have?
secondly i hearred the discussion about 2 or 4gbs of ram. if i insert 4gb ram, then i just get 3 a 3.5 gb? and will an t7200 allow me to have more ram?and last is more an software issue; i use fingerprint to logon to windows 7 (home premium). is there a way i can set windows to only use fingerprint log on? (so you cant select other logon options).

My new W540 has the latest bios & software updates. It won't wake up from sleep...or rather the display won't come on. When I push the power button (pulsing green), it goes to solid green and the fingerprint scanner light turns on, but no screen. I scan my fingerprint and the scanner light turns off, but still no screen. The only way to bring it back to life is a long press on the power button and a reboot.
Nothing plugged into any of the ports. It does this regardless of whether it's plugged in or on battery.

My X1 is about 18 months old. It was fine until today. The battery was low, so I plugged it in. The little blue light where the power connects illuminated, however the battery indicater in Windows did not change to show "charging", and the battery continued to drain.
Over the next hour or so I tried many things like shutting down, waiting, new A/C outlet, new power settings, etc. Tried the little reset hole on the bottom of the laptop. Nothing mattered... the little blue light is on, but the battery just drains.
Eventually, the battery drained and the X1 shut down. When I try to boot, I get a pre-boot message about a critical low power error, even plugged in, so my laptop is now a brick. This is a 3448-34U Thinkpad Carbon X1.

I am trying to do a clean install on my good, old Thinkpad X230 which came with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. For some reason, I was not able to create a bootable media from the recovery partition. In any case, I wanted to avoid the recovery partition as I want a basic, non-bloated, and minimal install.
Hence, I downloaded a copy of 64-bit Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft/ digital river website. After performing the checksum, I used Microsoft's USB DVD Download Tool to make a bootable USB on Kingston Flash Voyager (USB 2.0; 8 GB; FAT32). BTW, just for the heck of it, I verified that it boots on my spare (and even older) Thinkpad X60 -- though it doesn't proceed when it sees that the X60 has a 32-bit microprocessor.
The relevant BIOS values and settings are as follows:
UEFI BIOS Version G2ET95WW (2.55)
UEFI BIOS Date 2013-July-09
UEFI Secure Boot Off

I am posting this query after trying a number of solutions : rebooting from a USB flash drive on my Thinkpad X230. For some reason, nothing has worked and pressing F12 only shows the ATA HDD0 hard drive. Among other things, I have tried the following:
- Updated the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver using Lenovo's Thinkvantage Tools. Now it has version 1.0.9.254. Someone suggested to have at least 1.4.0.225 which is apparently available at Intel's website. I always considered downloading the device drivers from Lenovo to be kosher. Shall I download it from Intel's website?
- Disabled USB 3.0 from BIOS which made all USB ports to act as USB 2.0. Neither option works.
- Tried booting from all three USB ports (of which one is USB 2.0 and two are USB 3.0). Zilch.
- Have yet to try "reset BIOS to default" suggestion as it looked a bit of a last resort.

How to boot from a Lenovo recovery disk for Windows 7 on a USB driven DVD drive? The laptop is currently running Linux so can't run from within the operating system. The BIOS utility doesn't recognise the drive no matter what I select in the boot menu (USB CD, USB FDD or USB HDD) and the F12 boot utility also doesn't recognise the drive. Incidently, F12 does recognise the Linux USB drive so I know this works. The external drive is a Leicke DVD R/RW DVD.
The reason for wanting to boot from the Windows 7 recivery drive is to reinstall Win 7 on a new install, dual boot Linux (Mint), then install iTunes on WIn 7so I can sync my iPhone, and run everything else under Linux. I've tried using a Win emulator under Linux but unsuccessfully.

I just bought an X61 on ebay and installed Mint Linux, VirtualBox and the Win8.1 preview.
All was going well, except that the heat worried me. The fan was going, but no air seemed to be coming out, so I followed the service manual and dismantled the whole machine. The area between the fan and the heatsink vanes was completely clogged with oily dust and felt, so I cleaned everything, lubricated the fan and re-assembled the machine.
Now it will not turn on. No lights, nothing. I have checked all the internal connectors and all seem fine. I've done this sort of thing often in the past, although not in an X61.
The one problem that I encountered was that the keyboard bezel was glued to the case bottom near the LH hinge and in prising the glue apart, I had to break a small piece out of the bezel at the back, and I have reassembled it with a slightly loose rear part of the bezel.
So, my question is whether there is some sort of tiny switch in the video cable going up to the screen, and does this have to be accurately positioned wrt the bezel? Also, if I try to glue the bezel back together, would epoxy work with the bezel plastic or is there a better glue?

I'm having a bit of a strange problem with my Thinkpad X201.
I've been running Windows 7 Pro on it for almost a year without any problems at all, but the SSD I installed developed a fault and had to be replaced. I have the original Win 7 Pro DVD and have installed it from scratch on the new SSD but a few problems have come up.
W7 couldn't find any drivers for the network card or wireless card, and without a network connection it couldn't go online to find any - luckily I was able to download a network card driver via my desktop pc which I then installed on the X201, and when the Windows updates were downloaded and installed, the wireless also started working too.
However, the on-screen displays for the volume, brightness and Caps Lock functions don't work and neither does the Fn-F5 for wireless and Bluetooth.
I spent all of yesterday evening hunting various forums and downloading numerous drivers etc, but I still can't get the OSD to work.
I've tried Lenovo's System Update which downloaded some things and have also tried using the Intel video drivers etc but am totally lost now as to what to do next.
I know that the OSDs do work as they were all working perfectly on the original W7 install, I just don't know what the problem is now with this clean install.

I have an AC adapter left over from my first generation X1 Carbon. It is 90W/20V. The adapter that came with the new machine is quite a bit smaller, and only 65W/20V. Can I use the 90 watt adapter with the new model X1, or will it damage it somehow? Dont want to ruin my brand new computer.

I have been anxiously awaiting the X240 as a possible upgrade to my Thinkpad collection. It turns out the X240 supports only 8GB of RAM with but 1 DIMM slot. The X230 supports 16GB with 2 DIMM slots.
No, I am not going to buy one. What is up with this decision, Lenovo?

My x120e has been getting hot ever since I've got it.
Not doing much of anything, it'll be 75-80 degrees C. Full load, 95-99 C.
I've tried replacing the thermal compound, replacing the heatsink, the cpu is undervolted. It still runs quite hot. As I write this, the computer is 97% idle and still at 77 degrees C. It's sitting on a hardwood floor, so the vents on the bottom that I just blew out are clear.
