Sony :: (Completely) Disassembling Vaio
Nov 21, 2009
Spilled beer on my comp about a week ago, immediately got a blue warning screen telling me to contact my service provider. So I unplugged it and pulled the battery, drained what liquid I could out of it, and slowly started disassembling right down to the motherboard. I slowly spent the last week gently rubbing the crud off all the circuits with a soft toothbrush and some q-tips, everything appears to be gone. I did not check the CPU, hopefully that's fine. Anyway I put it mostly back together and tried to power it on, and nothing happened.
It is possible that the beer in fact killed it completely. However I would suspect that if that were the case then the unit will still receive power and show signs of life, but not actually boot. Another possibility is that I killed it myself while taking it apart. It is also possible that there is a short, or I forgot to hook everything up correctly, etc etc
From a troubleshooting standpoint I think my next move will be completely taking everything out (motherboard, cpu, everything) and starting from ground zero to make sure everything is clean and connected properly. Ie connecting the motherboard with power and seeing if it powers on, then add the cpu and see if it powers on, then add the memory, etc. I know the system won't boot without a cpu/mem, but it should still respond to the power input. Or at least it should, in theory
Ive done this a thousand times with desktop systems, but never for a laptop. My question: are there any failsafe devices which prevent the system from powering up unless they are connected?

I am out of warranty. So using the manual, I tried disassembling it myself but I am stuck at one step. Removing the hood. Did anyone else needed to remove it, if yes, how?

Does anyone have a link to a website or PDF describing how to properly open and disassemble a VAIO VGN-SZ75GN?
I have a VAIO VGN-SZ75GN, bought about 8 months ago, and now I want to exchange the built-in hard-disc with a solid-state disc.
I need some guide with illustrations/pictures, how to reach the disc

i have had 2 problems with my Z for a while and im fed up because its out of warranty and sony will not fix it.
1. The Right hinge i believed is messed up so it does not close correctly. Due to this the right side of the lcd bezel has become cracked on the bottom right i believe because of the tension. (check the pictures). I have to keep a clip on the right bottom side to hold the LCD in place.
2. The notebook is really really hot. Especially using the nvidia. When running any 3d game it takes less than 10 minutes for the temps to get ridiculous on the cpu and gpu. It just turns off when it gets to like 103 or something. Im not sure if its the gpu or cpu but i think they share the same copper pipe for heat. Im going to put arctic silver on both of the chips if i can and clean everything out really good.
My main issue is the hinge. Im not even sure if it is repairable. If it isnt repairable where and how should I go about getting a new Hingle and LCD bezel.

Trying to get rid of these questionably useful programs -- but I don't see entries for them in add/remove programs in the control panel (or for any of the other useless VAIO software packages that come on OEM machines sans "fresh start")

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.
Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.
So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

Just performed a successful XP downgrade on my Vaio Z520, but have noticed that on this copy of the Vaio Silver Desktop Theme/Appearance doesn't exist.
I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.

I don't know whats the diference (besides the price), between VAIO TZ295N & VAIO TZ395N. Specs in all the websites I've checked say they have exactly the same components: Intel coreduo 1.33Ghz 2GB RAM DVD-RW and 64GB SSD Hardrive. I was wonder if the diference might be in the hard drive interface, with the TZ295N being PATA and TZ395N being SATA.

I'm wondering if the Blu-ray optical drive (Panasonic UJ-232A) of the (old) VAIO Z series will be able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series? I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to answer my question.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.

I am facing a strange problem with my Studio XPS 16. It was working fine with no BSOD, crashes, hang-up etc for a week or so.
I was watching a movie this weekend and laptop was on batteries. Well by the time movie got over only 15% of battery charge was remaining (I am having a 6 cell battery). I plugged in the laptop for charging.
After while I shutdown the laptop and surprisingly after Windows did the shutdown the Laptop was not shut down and the white light on the power button as well as on both sides of the laptop (on the side of hinges) were blinking i.e

Last week, my XPS M1330 decided to give up on me. I bought the laptop more than a year ago and the warranty has expired.
I have been enjoying this laptop very much since I bought it. I works great and perfectly well. It never gives me any problem - hardware or software, and I took great care of it.
Last week, it decided to give up on me. I hadn't switch it on for a week, and when I switch it on last Saturday, it boots well until it got to the Windows Welcome Screen, the whole laptop went off! It's completely dead. No sign of life at all. I tried to change to another battery (I have an extra 9 cell batt), and it doesnt work .....

I was a happy DM3-1030US customer for about a month until this morning when an incredibly strange and frustrating problem has rendered the laptop useless.
Last night when I finished using the PC I left it disconnected from the charger so it naturally ran out of juice and turned itself off.
This morning I plugged it back in and slid the power switch, the fans turned on power light lit up (but not caps lock and Wi-Fi light is orange) but the screen is completely black. The fans remain spinning, computer is clearly receiving power and turned on but nothing happens at all. I've tried leaving it in that state for 30+ minutes to no avail.
I tried removing the battery for 20+ minutes then trying again to no avail. Most frightening of all I completely removed the power and turned on the PC via direct AC power with exactly the same result. This leads me to believe something has completely failed at a hardware level in this machine. Has anyone else experienced anything at all like this?
I'm very dissapointed that such an issue is occuring with a brand new machine like this. I've always thought the price I paid (around $500 from staples with multiple rebates) was too good to be true and now that appears to be the case. Unless HP is extremely graceful in their resolution of this matter I don't see myself purchasing another product from them again, which is a shame since I've purchased multiple laptops as well as my 30" monitor from them in the past. I was even considering purchasing the new Envy 14 when it's released.

How does one completely power off the Vostro 1000? When I hit the power button, it powers down but the battery light is still on.
Really, I am not an idiot, but shouldn't that go off too? I don't want to power off, take my computer somewhere and there is no juice because the battery took over and ran down.

I actually want to wipe my HDD because I get an error in partition table and I can't use Partition Magic and other tools..
I have created an Acronis Image for my PQService of about 8,5 GB and one for the other Hidden partition 3,5 GB - is this a CompaqSetup Diagnostic partition with ROM BIOS ? or is Acer Arcade-InstantOn ? cause I've seen it's name like CompaqSetup and in some utility program it's says about something with diagnostic.. I'm confused about this... and btw I have already created my Recovery DVD's.
So if I wipe my HDD, after it's all gone I can use my Acer recovery disks and reinstall Vista Ultimate and Restore PQservice and the other partition ? How do I restore my backed up partitions like PQservice and Acer Arcade if I don't have them already when I use Recovery Disks ?

I went into empowering Technology And chose the option Restore to factory default. I followed all the directions and it went to factory default correctly. But then, when i tried to re install (Visual Studio 08) From a CD I noticed that it had the serial already in it.. I had put that serial in befor I chose the factory default option. Does some info like serials stay in registry after the factory default? If Yes then is there a way I can COMPLETLY remove EVERYTHING from my HDD? To its original state?

My daughter has managed to get a virus on my laptop which has completely wiped it out, it won't start windows, it won't do anything. Its an acer aspire laptop and I worked out it has a partition from googling and did the Alt F10 thing which seemed to work a dream, did a restore to factory defaults etc. etc. but it then started to load windows, I had to choose my location, enter username and password etc. etc. and then nothing, just a blue screen (which is the windows backdrop) and nothing. I've taken the battery out after about 2 hours, restarted the computer and it did the same again and has now been sitting at this blue screen for an hour or so, should I do Alt F10 again? or am I just suppose to wait it out?

a new 6730b and the one serious remaining problem I have is that the battery, even though plugged in on AC, displays as 'plugged in not charging'.
I've discovered - by endless hours of hard slog - that the webcam driver is actually the issue here. I've uninstalled the chicony software and, on the few occasions that I've succeeded in uninstalling the driver & kept it uninstalled for the next start-up, the battery recommences charging. But in recent days it's reverted to reinstalling the driver on start-up, and stopping the battery recharging.
I can't seem to permanently remove the driver, no matter how hard I try. And I really, really want to!
The driver uninstall or disable in Device Manager only gets rid of it until the next start up (and unless I can restart without it reinstalling, the battery doesn't get kicked into recharge).
I've even tried deleting the driver from WindowsSystem32drivers - I changed all the permissions to enable me to delete and... deleted it! Even double checked that it had gone to the recycle bin. Yes, it's there.
But I restart after all this and the damn thing has magically put itself back in the same file.

As result of completely frozen laptop when trying to copy a very large file (~17GB) - a georeferenced raster image - to an external HDD (connected to USB 3.0 port), I had no other choice than to shutdown. After reboot, I discoverd that some Windows services are not working and boot time is over 20 minutes.
I went to the IT store from which I bought the laptop ( the 2 years warranty is available till november this year) and they reinstalled the system. Of course, they did not reinstalled all Dell system applications. So, because the end of warranty is close, I want to know which are the steps for completly (fresh) reinstall of Dell XPS L702X laptop (windows, driver and Dell applications). I always reinstalled 5 times my desktop ( Win XP Pro) with no errors encountered so I think I might have some skills.
And another question : after this problem, I discovered over the Internet that is a "Reinstallation DVD DELL XPS 17 L702x 6.1 Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 X64" that I did not find in laptop case when I bought it (only drivers CD was in the case). In fact it was a 15" case, not the origina 17" case....what can I say.... Romania......So, I have this driver CD and Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 DVD. Is is enough for clean and complete reinstallation? What are the steps ?

My HP Pavilion DV6 6120us freezes during shut down. Windows looks like it goes through the shut down process and the screen goes black but the mousepad border light stays on and the wifi (f12) button goes orange. The only way to completely shut it down is to hold the power button for a few seconds. Once I start it up again, it says Windows wasn't shut down properly. After a few days of this, now the laptop battery isn't being detected.
I went into the BIOS and run the onboard memory test and hard drive test but both passed. I haven't done a reinstall of the Windows yet but with the battery issue now I am thinking it could be the motherboard but I'm hoping it's something else as it's out of warranty. I'm running Windows 7 Home SP1 64-bit edition.

Am planning to get a sony laptop for me. The design simply rocks I am getting mixed reviews about cw and E series. But i made up my mind to get one.
My budget is aroung 40000rupees. Thats around 800$. So suggest me a better one between these two for occasional moderate and less(mosltly) demanding games. I dont care whether its 14 or 15 inch.
Am looking at lower end versions of both the models.
Only difference is CW uses Nvidia Geforce 310 and the E series uses some Radeon 5000 series one. CW has 14 inch screen whereas E series has a 15.5 inch screen. In the models which i am looking at both have matte finish and both has WXGA:1366 x 768 VAIO Display.
which one should i go for. whether the screen quality will be on par to Inspiron one atleast? ( I dont need HD).

im planning on using the laptop for videos, photoshop and a bit of gaming, maybe even a bit more gaming :-)
The Vaio F Series only has 330M Nvidia Graphics Card with i7QM and up to 8GB of Ram and up to 256GB SSD.
The E Series has ATI 5650 (a less powerful version, reduced clock speed) combined with a i5 520M with up to 6Gb of Ram and up to 500GB of HDD ? Why can i not choose SSD ?

if I can use the AC Adapter of a Vaio TT on the Vaio Z. The standard AC Adapter that comes with the Vaio Z is of 19.5V and the one for the Vaio TT is of 16V, which I don't know if it's enough for the Vaio Z to function properly or if there could be any problem or damage. Both machines have batteries of 10,8V.
I have an undervolted Vaio Z by the way (last multiplier at 0.9875) so I don't know if this could help in any way for my Z to work ok with the TT AC Adapter.

My latest odyssey with Dell has lasted over 3 weeks and ended in utter disappointment; the experience has been both frustrating and time consuming, but I notice it's not all that dissimilar to some experiences others have posted about, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
On 11/24 I ordered a Studio 1737 with an estimated ship date of 12/5. As has been the case for many others, Dell generated a separate order for the Bluetooth module, and like many others I found this frustrating and nonsensical, but I didn't rush to judgment immediately, I decided I'd wait and see if they actually shipped it separately and uninstalled.
Of course, they did, and I received the component on 12/8. I filled out the return request form and asked for an RMA for the component, because I placed the order with the expectation it would be installed professionally. The response I received essentially excused the practice that caused the module to be shipped separately with no disclaimer, and denied me an RMA for the module. They wouldn't let me return it. I went back and forth with this guy for a week, exchanging 6 emails total, each one explaining my disappointment in greater detail than the last. After 6 emails, I still have not received an RMA. Each email merely deflected my concerns and ignored my original request by assuring me not only that I would receive my system and I would be overwhelmingly satisfied, but that he would personally see that the order was expedited.
I fell for this, until last friday, 12/12, when Dell notified me that my order had been delayed for a second time and required my consent to be processed; I logged into the order status site as the email required to provide consent, and then shot an admittedly discourteous email back to the guy who'd been feeding me disinformation for a week to avoid giving me an RMA for a lousy $20 part that plainly wasn't delivered in the condition I expected (I was really annoyed). On Monday, 12/15, I received a response for him, this time assuring me that the system would ship within 24 hours. This pacified me until about an hour later, when I received the email from Dell finally canceling my order completely.
I responded one last time (much more composed and gracious) to tell him I was receiving conflicting information regarding the order status, and to ask which was accurate. This morning, 12/16, I received a terse response from his manager telling me that the order had been canceled "due to unavoidable reasons", suggested that I contact the sales department to have my order reinstated, and asked that I reply to him if I still want an RMA for the bluetooth module (a line his subordinate fed me before, to which I responded in the affirmative).
What do you think I filled out the return request form for, or all the emails I wrote requesting a return?
I'm completely bewildered. I've wasted enough time talking to these people, and I don't intend to continue. I don't even care about returning the thing anymore. The frustration and time lost towers over the lousy $20 lost on the bluetooth module.
All this is added to the fact that Dell delayed my order twice, then canceled it blaming the federal mail order rule, despite the fact that I followed their instructions to prevent that. I don't know where to begin.
I'd like to send a letter detailing this experience detailing my frustration to Dell, on the off chance that someone there is even the slightest bit interested in customer service (then I plan on meditating for about a week and exiling this experience from my mind completely.) I just don't know where, if anywhere, to direct my complaint (the returns department obviously isn't the place, since they don't even know what to do about returns).
They didn't charge me for the system they canceled, only for the bluetooth module that should have been canceled with the system, but if I go through all the hoops they want me to to recover the lousy $20 I'll lose my mind, so it's not about money. I basically want to give them a piece of my mind, cut my losses, and be done with it. Any advice?

I was trying to re-install the Bluetooth drivers (R140135) on my system (configuration in my signature),
and hence I removed all the Bluetooth related devices in the Device Manager. But now when I try to install the drivers, I get this message -
Code:
"Please uninstall current Bluetooth installation before continuing"
I have tried to remove it from where ever I could find it, I renamed the default Windows Vista drivers so that they are not loaded.
There is no mention of Bluetooth anywhere now, but the DELL driver file still gives me that error!
