I have a laptop which has a dim screen, I am not sure if its the inverter or the back light that needs to be replaced. Its a Sony FS-740/w series laptop. I want to be sure which one needs to be replaced so that i can order it online. way to check if the inverter is working correctly.

i have had a lot of problems with my display since august. although i didn't notice at the time, it happened soon after i installed the Win 7 RC.
when i start the laptop up the screen looks all distorted and the colours arent correct:

but when i take screencaps and connect it to another monitor everything looks fine.

i assumed the screen was knackered, but i installed a game a few weeks ago and it brought the display back to life, only for it to look crap again when i restarted. this also happened when i did a clean install of vista, only for the display to go bad when the updates installed.
i have tried many times, but have been unable to replicate this...............
I have a Dell 17" laptop and the screen shows this blueish green vertical on startup.
After a few minutes of warming up the line goes away and the screen looks normal. The line reappears on reboot though.
Looks like this is a problem with the backlight/inverter. The laptop is almost 4 years old, but I would like to keep it going a little while longer
I have a DV9000 and the LCD suddenly went dim. I thought the inverter had gone so bought and fitted one. However now when the laptop turns on for the first time I can see the display for maybe 1-5 seconds (5 on initial start, less on soft restarts), but then it goes dim again.
I have tried unplugging AC/Batt and holding power for 20 seconds but it made no difference.
my HP ze4230 laptop Trying to reboot it with a new harddrive it went black on me with no warning.I put the old harddrive back in.Its still dark but I can see in the screen very faintly with a flashlight.I hooked it up to my desktop monitor and it worked well.My problem is,I took the inverter out but how can I tell if its bad or if its the backlight that is bad..

If I turn of my laptop and restart it, the display will come on for a second ( but it is a little bit reddish) and then I hear a noise and it light goes off, and I can;t see anymore. However, I am sure the computer is still running properly
I am sure that the computer is on, and is functioning properly for two reasons:
1- if it is sunny, i can see my desktop, and what ever I have open, be that a browser, a word document, so on and so forth
2-when i connect my laptop to an external display everything is fine...

My DV2000, when power off the monitor is dark, when power on, the monitor lit/iluminated. But nothing on the screen. The harddrive led blinks so it's accessing.
I thought it was inverter so I replaced it with the $8+ from y'allstore. It didn't work.
I accidentally dropped my Compaq Presario C571NR and it fires up Ok, but the screen is black. I have tested the video card with other monitor and it seems to work fine. I did some research and I found that it could be that either the inverter board or the backlight might have gotten damaged. I have purched a new inverter card online (awaiting arrival) to replace the existing one, but I wanted to know if any of you know which of them has the propensity to get damaged first, the inverter or the backlight?
I'm hoping is the inverter because it seems the easiest to replace, but if it's the backlight, then I'm screwed because I've read it's quite difficult to replace and it's more expensive. Compaq says they'll charge me $300 to fix it (since my warranty has already expired) but I might as well get a new one if the new inverter doesn't fix the problem.
Alright Well I bought a new inverter plugged it in and it still is doing the same thing. Only when i jiggle the wires the light goes on and i see the screen but not for long. I check for loose conncections but can't find any. The external display is fine. I'm wondering if it could be the actual bulb.

View 10 Replies View Relatedmy FZ was sent in for repair in December because of Nvidia graphics card problem. I got it back a few days ago, and the screen died on me. I think the backlight LED on the LCD is broken, since I can see the things on the monitor (i.e. I can see the content) but it's REALLY dark that I literally have to put my face up against it. Of course I tried turning up the brightness, rebooting, turning it on after few hours and it still didn't work.
Anyone have an experience getting the screen repaired? Mine's out of warranty (over a year old) and I'm wondering how much it costs.
Backlight on screen is dead.
the keyboard backlight goes off after about 30 seconds of non-use of the keys. The trackpad movement doesn't keep it lit.
i can re-light by touching any key, but this presents two issues:
1.) the first keystroke is entered. (i guess i can use the shift key)
2.) more important, the screen brightness seems to react to ambient light, so the keyboard's light ends up making the screen pulsate.
I couldn't find a specific reference, although hard to believe. But then again, the humongous threads are hard to search effectively.
Id like my keyboard back light to turn on much quicker. Is there any way I can change the turn-on threshold

Problem with my 2 week old sony vgn-z540 laptop.
Heres the problem:
When I try to use the brightness level in between LOW and HIGH, my LCD backlight would go off, and the screen would be dark and almost not visible at all. There are also vertical bars at random spots, stretching from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. I can only use it with either LOW setting or HIGH setting, nothing in between.
This problem just started on its own. I have not installed anything such as drivers or programs. No updates(was updated after the problem occured to try to fix it).
I love this laptop to death and has been the best laptop in the past 15 years. I would hate to see it go so I need this fixed.
I will update later with pictures when it gets dark here b/c the pictures now are not showing up with the bars.
1. How do I control the duration for which the backlight keyboard lights are on.
2. The ambient light detector keeps dimming and brightening my screen when in a complete dark room. How to fix this?
3. How to turn on or off the green power light button?
After using my new Vaio Z for a few hours i noticed a slightly greenish hue at the bottom of the screen(1600x900). It's mostly visible with white or very light background.
There are a few of those spots and i think it originates from uneven LED backlight. It's not instantly obvious, but after i've noticed it I find it somewhat distracting.
I have a Dell Inspiron 640m 14.1" laptop. I cleaned screen with foam and some foam flow under the screen frame, where the LCD inverter is. 1/3 of the screen (lower part) started to shudder (horizontal stripes appeared) and after some time this part stay brighter than other 2/3 upper part of the LCD. Motions on the brighter part are slow, mouse arrow movement is like in jelly. Text is hard to read. See added photo about LCD. Is it a LCD problem or inverter problem? What component needs replacement?

Within 2 days it became completeley black Now it is impossible to see anything even using a flashlight it seem completely dead.

The bottom left part of screen has two through bolts holding the hinge to the screen on my dv5000t.
At first the screen died as I closed the screen and discovered it had broke. This pulled out the display cable, the one from the motherboard. After I plugged it back in all was fine, except my screen was half attached.
So... I took apart the screen and through bolted the hinge to the lid, just below the LCD screen. I noticed a film behind the LCD that is attached to the hinges. I also noticed grounding plates on the inverter. Is the foil part of the grounding for the inverter or screen?
I have quadrupled check the connections. The Wifi LED still works, so I figured the ground is working but I don't know if it has it's own source. I am typing from the computer right now as it is hooked up to another screen.
I think its the inverter as there is nothing on the screen but pitch black even with a flashlight. Does anyone know how much voltage is suppose to come out so I can test it with a voltmeter?
I am sure there is something I did to screw it up, but I was delicate and don't understand how the inverter could have died just like that if it was working just fine.
The inverter flaked out in my Inspiron 6000, so I ordered a new "compatible" (same part number/specs, different design) inverter, which does work, only if the LCD is outside of the chassis.
Once the LCD is placed back into the chassis, something grounds and the inverter does not work. Once I take the screen back out of the chassis, it works fine. I'm not sure what could be grounding it or causing it not to work

I replaced this board and display worked for approx. one day, now no display again, notebook still diplays fine on external monitor.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy neighbor asked me to take a look at his zd7000. When we power it on, the screen turns on, but it stays black and displays nothing. If the laptop is hooked up to an external monitor it shows the graphics no problem on the external screen and still nothing on the LCD.
I took the the LCD apart and checked the ribbon cable to make sure it had a secure connection. That did not solve the issue.
My other idea is that the inverter is gone bad.
Do you guys think it is the inverter? Has anyone else had a similar issue?
I am looking for a reliable car power inverter for my 2007 Macbook Pro. My car has 2 power outlets (12V / 120W). I know there is a 15A fuse, so the maximum it can handle is 180W, but of course I do not want to take that risk and stay around the recommended 120W. Because of this, it limits the number of choices I have concerning power inverters. I have seen one from Duracell called the Pocket Inverter 100. Here are the specifications:
AC Output Power (Max Continuous): 80W
AC Output Power (Peak): 100W
AC Output Surge Capacity (Peak): 160W
AC Output Voltage (Nominal): 120V
AC Output Waveform: Modified Sine Wave
So, this leads to a few questions:
(1) The MBP Magsafe Adapter requires 85W. However, this inverter can provide only 80W of maximum continuous power. Will this be sufficient to charge and run the MBP in the car?
(2) I searched around and read a few posts by others regarding pure sine wave and how it is important to have it running to laptops. Now, this inverter has an output of a Modified Sine Wave. Will this be fine and will the Magsafe adapter be able to handle this?
(3) recommendations for car power inverters within these specifications?
My screen went black. Did some research and found it it was most likely the inverter.
I replaced the inverter but it still flickers and then goes black while its booting up.
How can I tell if this is the back light or if this is the lcd itself? I've heard the backlight is hard to replace and I might have to take it somewhere to have it done which would cost $$ .....
