Sony :: Hard Disk Drive Upgrade For FW270J
Dec 9, 2009I was thinking of upgrading my HDD to 500gb. What is the compatible hd for my laptop? [vgn-fw270j]

View 3 RepliesI have a Sony Vaio SR190 with a 160gb@5400 rpm hard drive. I really want to upgrade this with more capacity. I have two main questions:
1) What Hard Drive brand is the best? I was looking at the Western Digital Scorpio and the Seagate Momentus, but I want suggestions on the BEST.
I was wondering if it was easy to crack open and upgrade the CD-ROM drive to another hard drive instead. Since customizing a TT is hellaciously expensive and the hard drives they offer are slow and not big enough -I would rather supply my own parts than what they have in stock
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought an FW configured with a 320gb 5400rpm hard drive, originally with a view to taking it out and putting in a faster one, 7200rpm or even an ssd. However, sony said this would void the warranty so I decided to just stick wit the 5400rpm option.
So my question is that if I bought a 7200rpm drive now, or an ssd when they are slightly cheaper, would I be able to slot that in,
but then if something went wrong with the laptop and it had to be returned, simply slip in the original 5400rpm hard drive so the sony guys wouldn't know the difference?? Or would they be able to tell I had changed the drive?
How to replace Hard Drive for Sony Vaio Z...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am looking at one of the 7200rpm 320gb drives from either Hitachi, Fijitsu, Seagate and Western Digital.
Sony says the systems are not designed to be upgraded (by the end user). I guess they want only overpriced tech to do it. I have already popped my system apart and put it back together so I know how to do it. I have been building and repairing my own PC since 1990 so I am not afraid to do this. I would hate to buy the drive and find out that the BIOS will not support it.
Has anyone had any issues with Hard Drive upgrades on the SZ 330p/b model?
I'd like to upgrade the hard drive on my Vaio, and I found a number of options here to purchase a new drive to make sure I get a compatible one. I'm leaning toward the 7200 rpm 320 gig model.
What I'm concerned about is doing the actual upgrade after cloning my current drive to the new one, as Sony says that hard drives are not user-upgradeable.
I've replaced a hard drive before on a Toshiba laptop, and on a TiVo, and many times on a desktop computer, so I have some confidence that I could probably do it if I had instructions, which I don't. I saw the instructions here about upgrading a different model -- is it probably sufficiently similar that a moderately geeky girl could manage this herself?
Will pick up my VGN-TT180c this week and planning to upgrade the stock hard drive to a 7200rpm Hard Drive.
how to do the upgrade?
Sony VAIO VGN-NS140E/L. I've been wanting to replace my 250GB hard drive with a larger drive, but I can't find any instruction manuals/walkthroughs of how to disassemble it enough to make the swap.
I've read pages of other models, and followed it to the point of where I have removed the bottom screws and unhinged the keyboard, but now I can't figure out how to remove the plastic cover that is over the hard drive and other components (in other walkthroughs this part seems to be a seperate metal panel, not a plastic built-in part).
Disclaimer: I did do a cursory search for the question I want to ask, but there were like 480 pages that came up in my initial searches.
I have a Vaio VGN A270P that has VERY, VERY low miles on it. It is literally the car that the little old lady from Pasadena drove for like a grand total of maybe 10 hours.
I have ordered the requisite memory upgrade from the current 1GB to 2GB max from Crucial. Now I want to look into replacing the harddrive with something a little more beefy. In doing my due diligence, I found that this machine came with a max of 100GB hard drive. I see drives on the bay for reasonable prices that are as much as 360GB (?)
I am doing this in conjunction with a total dump of windows and swapping in Linux Mint for my OS. Basically I am wanting to try to extend the useful life and functionality of this machine by doing this.
My question is this....what would be you advice regarding the upgrading of the hard drive? Where to go to get it? What should I look for in purchasing the drive? What pit falls should I be on alert for? Do any of you have reservations about what I am proposing here?
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW290 with Vista Home Premium 64x that I’ve had for approximately one year. I would like to upgrade it by replacing the original 5400rpm HD with a 7200rpm HD and a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64x.
Here are the questions I have:
Is there a preferred hard drive that works well in this style of laptop? I’m considering a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 or WD Scorpio Black.
If I install the new hard drive, can I boot from the Windows 7 installation disk and go? Will the basic hardware function properly at this point; CD drive, internet connection for Windows installation, etc.? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
According to Sony eSupport, the VGN-FW290 model is “Windows 7 upgradeable”. Does this mean all the Sony Windows 7 drivers are available to provide the full functionality of the computer with a fresh install? There’s only a handful of Windows 7 Home Premium 64x drivers, on the Sony website, compared to the Vista Home Premium 64x OS. Do I use a combination of Vista drivers along with Windows 7 drivers? For example, I have the ATI Radeon HD 3650 video adapter and a Blu-ray read/write drive, but don’t see a Windows 7 driver for them.
Western Digital Scorpio WD2500BEVE 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

There are no reviews on newegg and
it does not exist on the Western Digital website.
Is this thing for real?
An SATA150 version has been out for a while with excelent reviews.

who knows if my Presario R4219, actually mounting a 60GB disk, can support a 250GB HD ? I was about to buy the WD2500BEVE, it's IDE and ATA-6, so it should work but I'm not sure the bios will recognize the whole disk dimension.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe wireless switch doesn't work; indication light won't turn on. Tried Smartwifi, kept prompting me to turn on the hardware switch. This also measn I can't use the bluetooth. Spoke with sony support for hours and all they could tell me is to send it for repair. I'm out of warranty. Device manager doesnt report any problem with the driver. I updated the bios. I restored settings to factory default. Nothing worked.
I decided to open it up to see if i can replace the wifi board myself. But when i did get into the motherboard, it seems the wifi is internal and the hardware radio switch is broken. I checked out other motherboard photos with the same model and i noticed that there should be a tiny piece of plastic sticking out near the wifi part, next to the sd card slot.
Has anyone ever successfully or "magically" able to physically turn on a broken wireless hardware switch? Is there any software switch to bypass the hardware?
I would like a big hard drive, but it seems like those bigger than 750 GB are 12 mm, not 9 mm. But can I use that as a secondary hard drive on the Precision?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got an Intel X18-M G1 80 gb ssd with a 2.5" enclosure to upgrade the HDD in my Acer 1410.
I opened the back panel, removed the 2 screws, then removed plastic piece holding down the gold connector, and pulled the plastic tape to get the hard drive out.
Problem now is, how do I remove the old hard drive from the chasis? I've upgraded laptop drives before and usually just there is a SATA connector. But here the SATA connector seems to be connected to a chasis/circuit board. There are several 6 point star shaped screws, including some covered by a piece of black plastic.
Unfortunately the internal keyboard and mouse on my MBP seem to have packed up for good. Fortunately, I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse.
Is there any way I can copy the entire contents of the hard disk onto an external USB hard disk (everything so that I don't lose desktop icons, filing structure e.t.c.) and then restore it when I get a new machine?
I have an HP Pavillion dm4. My hard drive died so I installed a new hard drive. The original OS installed on the computer was Windows 7. I did not get a Windows 7 disk with the computer. If I order the Windows 7 recovery disk from HP, will it install Windows 7 on my new hard drive? I have the COA info.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop suddenly hanged. When I pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del, the menu did not come on. When I repeated, it did not shut down. I manually shut down the laptop. When I restarted, it said cannot find hard disk drive and no bootable devices.
Someone checked it out and they say the drive has crashed. Is it possible the links are loose? Is it possible to recover data from drive?
I have a disk error on my XPS15Z. I ran a diagnostic and got:
Error code 2000-0142

Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N WD-WX11EC1F3775, self test unsuccessful. Status = 79
Do I have to replace my hard drive and if so, can I send it to get replaced? I am still under warranty.
I have new Dell Inspiron N4050 with pre-installed Windows 7. It has five partitions with are as follows:-
1) Dell Utility 41 MB FAT
2) OS 5.4 GB FAT
3) 310 GB ext 4
4) Extended 4.2 GB
5) 4.2 GB Swap ...
There is only one partition which is useful to me with a storage of 310 GB. But, I want 4 useful partitions. I don't need any recovery partition etc.
internal hard drive disk not found; no bootable devices; start up repair finds no solution..... I have reseated the hard drive several times. the computer runs extremely slow. Dell Data Safe had recommended replacing the hard drive ''couple of months" ago.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust purchased an Inspiron 15 laptop with Windows 8. Â I removed the hard disk drive from our old Inspiron 6000, installed it in an enclosure, and hooked it to the new laptop to be able to access the document files. Â (The hdd from the old computer is a Western Digital 250 GB and was newly installed six months ago).
When I plug in the enclosure, the power light comes on and it shows up on the new laptop as local disk E. Â When I click on disk E and go to documents, the only documents shown are three that are saved on the new laptop, and none of the hundreds of documents saved on the hdd from the old computer. Â What I can do?
There's a "disk read error occured" when I startup and it won't boot into windows at all. I did a hard disk test in BIOS and the Short DST failed and the failure id is GTU23F-5QF788-XD6V5F-60UR0 for Hard Disk 1. I know there's an 80 SSD and 750 HD but which one failed?
Â
If the ssd failed can I use the 750gb HD or does it need both?
Â
If I do need to replace the SSD can I replace it with a regular HD (on a budget) and what size drive do I need? 2.5?
I just received my T530 (2359CTO) and need to encrypt the hard drive. When I purchased it, I opted (among other reasons) for Windows 8 Professional because it comes with BitLocker. I then discovered that some ThinkPads have hard drives that support hardware encryption (FDE).
Â
I've tried to figure out whether mine has this feature, but haven't had any luck. The BIOS gives me the option to set a hard drive password, but I'm not positive that it actually encrypts the hard drive with this setting.
a) how to figure out if my hard drive supports hardware encryption
b) how to enable it
I have a Inspiron M5040 (mid 2011) I ran a system test and was informed that there was a drive critical error with a hard drive ST95032 5AS SATA Disk Device FAILED... What does that mean, is it fixable and how much?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought Vaio Fw590 with 320 Gb, do you guys know how to do disk partition without deleting the current factory recovery system/ file?
is it recommended to have disk partition?
Currently I have a 60gb 7200 drive and I'm constantly battling for disk space and I regularly have to move files off on to my desktop to reserve space. The last straw was just last week I wanted to install all of the Orange Box and well that's like half my hard drive. I had to remove my entire mp3 and photo collection and uninstall a ton of crap to find room for it.
Anyway, I'd like to get a bigger hard drive. 100+ gig minimum. I'd like to stay with a 7200 rpm drive but it seems from some threads around here that you can get virtually the same performance from the larger 5400 drives. If that's the case, I don't really care which speed it is.
Is there a certain formfactor for the drive I'm looking for? Certain brands? Anyone who's upgraded the harddrive in this system have any advice? Most of the threads I found regarding new harddrives are on the newer Dell systems; and mine is a few years old.
I suppose an external drive is always an option; but like another post here it'd have to be usb powered as I need it to be fully portable and carrying another power cord around just isn't gonna work. I've never had any experience with external drives however; though I imagine they work identical to an internal for all normal purposes. How about speed though? Are they feasable to run games off of or can you pretty much only use them for file storage?
It seems ideally I'd minimum want to upgrade my internal drive with 100+gig drive and then possibly also get an external drive later. So knowing that what should I be looking for for an internal drive upgrade. Can anyone give me any models or links to good ones or where I should be looking?
