Sony :: Install HD In VGN-Z591
Feb 10, 2009
I have a Sony vgn-z591 and would like to upgrade the hd to an ssd. I've already gone ahead and purchased a 2.5" PNY 128 gb ssd, but can't find a service manual anywhere.
Does anyone know the procedure for opening the case and installing a new 2.5" drive?

I have sony VGN-Z591U with 32bit OS
Is there any possible way to upgrade my OS from 32 bit to 64 bit on my laptop?
I have check the sony website and they have no driver for 64bit (only 32 bit).
If I take the 64bit driver from different model e.g. VGN-Z690, because they have 64-bit driver. Will it work with my laptop?

I want to install XP on my VGN-FW550F. I have windows 7 pre-installed on my notebook.
I dont like so i want XP as OS.
If I boot the XP-CD.
it loads the files, and after a while it gives me the blue screen of death with this code:
Code:
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8B54524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
What's the problem? Someone on a other forum told me that i can't install XP if i have a newer version of Windows.
I just formatted my C: and deleted 7. But i still can't install it.

I have installed Windows 7 Ulitimate on my FZ280. I followed the instructions of ScuderiaConchiglia and the win7 suggestions of Dr Pratik. The instructions seemed to be perfect.
I installed the OS and followed his instructions. Everything seems to work perfectly, including the Fn keys.
But I have found my first issue. I am having problems playing blu ray discs. I have tried Windows Media Player, DivX and Cyberlind PowerDVD to no avail

I can get Vista 64bit business from school for free and was wondering should I just format my computer completely,
removing sony's partition, and just download all the drivers off the website.
My FW465J/B we'll be here tomorrow and I think that is the best way to approach the bloatware provided by sony

My father purchased in Greece a Sony Vaio UX1XN, but the OS (Vista Business) is in english and he needs the greek one.
How can he do it? Sony support said that he must send it to London or Bruxelles to install the operating system in another language.
Is there any other solution guys?
How can I install a different OS in the UX that it doesn't have the optical drive?

today I received new memory and right away decided to do easy task, install it to my VGN-TX51B/B.
It looked easy just until I opened the memory cover and found out there is some kid of mechanism, which I don't know. Nevermind, just slide it there and lightly pressed and it was there, even though not in the way I expected (see red circles)
Turned on, checked in My Computer...and surprise, there's written just 504 MB of RAM. Quick check in SIW and it looks like it's installed properly

I downloaded 2 different downloads, and burned on two different DVDs. I get a screen that says "loading files" (first screen) and they both freeze at the EXACT same spot .
I had vista earlier, then got windows 7 RC so it has worked fine before. I wiped my HDD with killdisk (to get rid of hidden vista files) and had a boot-up windows 7 disk, which worked fine in my test beforehand, but fails now. So I have NO OS, NOTHING. I am on Linux puppy just to have something and post on here,
In my house, my laptop is the only computer with a DVD burner. Formating with a flash drive is difficult because the rest of the computers have XP and I can't disk part them (XP doesn't recognize flash drives in command prompt) Way too advanced for me. So I downloaded windows 7, put it on a flash drive, then put it on my laptop (that has Linux puppy) and burned it onto a DVD again. Same result .....

gave me his VGN-NS140E a couple weeks back, saying his son F'd it up again, and needs me to do a reinstall of everything. Thought it'd be easy right? Well, Win7 installs about half way, and then says some files are unavailable or corrupted, and then quits. Same disk was used to install Win7 Pro on two of my other machines.
So I tried ubuntu, and found that after reaching the main screen, no matter which option I choose, install/run without install/check disk for defects/etc, it just reboots the machine.
I've worked with tons of thinkpads, only a couple of Vaios, but never came across anything like this...

My problem is that I bought a VAIO laptop (VGN-FW31M) and it came with windows vista. So I formated it and installed Windows XP PRO SP·3.
(I had the common SATA driver problem but I managed to solve it).
The problem comes when I try to install any driver, even the CHIPSET driver.
I get a message saying:
"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software. Setup will exit"
I got all the drivers from the sony official site.

I have a valid volume licence XP CD that will let me install on other laptops. I attempt to install on the VGN-Z690 and I get a bluescreen before it gets to the disc detection /f8 to continue part. I put the sata drivers on a floppy, selected them and I still get the BSOD.
I've had this on some dell workstations and you had to change the controller in the bios but I don't see that in the Sony bios.

I just bought a CS-215J and did a clean install of Windows 7 x64 RC. This is my third attempt now because I can't get everything working correctly. I'm able to get all the drivers installed and components in working order, but I can't for the life of me get it to install the Sony Notebook Utilities so that I can use the touch sensor media controls. It launches, looks like it's installing, asks to restart and once the computer boots back up it starts the install again. But once it gets to that point, the window just closes and the only thing that installs from the Utilities is the Event Service, nothing else. Is there a certain order I should install the drivers or something specific I should have installed before attempting to install the Utilities?
I have tried installing Vista x64 and still come up with the same issue, so I don't think it has anything to do with the Windows 7 RC.

I opened up my Z last night and changed the stock HDD to a new WD Scorpio Black 320gb 7200rpm HDD. Aside from some difficulty with one of the screws already having a stripped head, it was a fairly simple process.
I turned the Z back on and installed Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 from the OEM disc that I bought for my custom-built desktop computer (to clarify, this means it's the official MSDN release of Vista x64 SP1 from March '08, w/ no embedded drivers), using the Vista product key under the bottom of my Z. All was well until the install completed and Vista rebooted... it gave me the blue screen of death. I shut down the Z and turned it back on -- same result. Then I started the Z and jumped into the BIOS immediately, took out the Vista install disc, and started -- this time it didn't blue screen and the Vista install completed and successfully booted to the desktop.
I was tired and went to bed at that point before installing any drivers, but I'm concerned that my install may be corrupted and that I should attempt it again (perhaps ensuring that I remove the install disc immediately upon the reboot?). Could the blue screen be an issue associated with my Vista SP1 disc not having the right SATA drivers for the Z? If that's the case, I may have to try to create a new Vista install disc with the drivers slip-streamed in.
Another odd thing was that, when choosing where to install, Vista saw the only partition on the HDD as "Disk 0 Partition 3." The HDD is brand new -- I remember back to when I installed Vista on my desktop and it saw my hard drive as "Disk 0 Partition 1." There was no missing space, it had the 298.9GB that you'd expect for a 320GB drive.

I've recently successfully installed Win7 on my S170 and I'd like to share my experience with other S series owners. The how-to guide is posted on a different forum so I'll post a link to that. I hope it is helpful since Sony will not support this install even though the machine is fully capable. [url]

my sytem setup after a clean install of vista home premium.
I think I loaded all the driver ect after the clean install as per the instruction in a post on this site, I then istalled SP1 on.
My first question is that when I boot up the system it boots fine to the desktop but then the HD disk light stays on for a good few minuets with CPU usaged in the 3%-10% ranged will this is going on, after that the HD light just flikers constantly......is this right?
2 Should I load Sony update prgram and run it and Windows update?
3 I have not loaded any Sony stuff so no keys like eject or BluRay etc work I cant seem to find what drivers are need and I dont wont to load all sorts of stuff on as that would defeat the perpuse of a clean install. I have only 50 processor runing after booting up
I ahve a few other thing i like to ask but I will leave that for another post as I think thats enough question for now!

family member install some additional memory in her Sony VAIO laptop, but seem to be having a problem. Its a VGN-C290 model (May 2007) and currently has one 1GB chip installed & has one open slot. It allows a max of 2GB.
Now, I have purchased an additional 1GB chip from Crucial.com, but after installing it in the one open slot, it appears that it is not recognizing it at all. The laptop will turn on, but doesn't get to the XP screen. Not even the Sony VAIO/Phoenix welcome screen either.
I have never had a problem with Crucial memory, but I contacted them directly to maybe help with this problem. They basically told me to make sure it is really seated in there good and apply a lot of pressure. They also had me put the Crucial memory in the slot #1 where the original Sony memory was. Neither worked.
The only other thing they suggested was that it was a BIOS related issue & to somehow update the BIOS. I checked & it currently is running BIOS version #R0080J4. I'm trying to determine if this is the latest version. If not, then how to update it.
