View 6 RepliesI think Acer just hit a niche market with the Timeline series. No other manufacturer has touched this area before. The first time I saw the specs I knew I wanted one. The price/weight/performance/battery life ratio can not be matched by any notebook on the market. Or am I wrong? What other notebooks are there? Where can I buy a 13.3 inch Acer Timeline in Canada?
View 10 Replies View RelatedWondering about those of you who had experience with the Sony Refurb notebooks. My understanding is that they are basically new old model, but come with only 90 days warranty.
THAT is the factor that scares me - the 90 day warranty as Sony repair is very expensive out of warranty.
Anyone comment on the risk vs the reduced price?
What's a good site that serves internationally which is selling Sony Vaio notebooks?
Any other than Amazon?
Can these be returned within the 14 day period if there is no engraving? Say there are stuck pixels or something.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI know many people have said they upgraded their ram past the "2gb limit" to 3gb or some even 4gb on a Intel GL960 chipset...but has anyone successfully upgraded their ram above 2gb with the GL960 on a Sony Vaio, or even more specifically the VGN-NR140E, or any VGN model? I'm asking because I want to upgrade past the limit, but I don't want to waste my money if it won't work, and if someone can let me know if it worked on their Sony Vaio (should have similiar BIOS) then I will be a bit more confident on my purchase.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just bought a pre-configured SR490 and am wondering where do these ship from. Does sony just have one shipping center for VAIOs or are there numerous?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a SV Notebook PCG-7D1M which has completely died on me!! I heard somewhere that if a battery is dead or not inserted in a Vaio it will not work at all. Please can someone confirm this for me as at first i thought it was my power supply so bought a new adaptor but it still wont work with or without the battery in. I basically just want to know if it will work just running from the mains?
View 3 Replies View RelatedNone of the Vaio notebooks have IR Remote Control which I feel is very useful and has become standard since long in notebooks of other manufacturers, still I have not found anyone complaining about it in this forum. Does no one here miss the lack of it in their Vaios?
View 4 Replies View Relatedif Sony ships the vaios with any kind of sleeve or carrying case by default, or should I order one separately?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWas told that there are a couple of Z690 notebooks with 1366 x 768 resolutions. Is this possible?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am considering a VAIO FW series.
1. Does this series use BIOS or EFI?
2. Is the BIOS (EFI) locked down so that one must struggle to make adjustments, troubleshoot hardware etc?
3. If so, can it be unlocked?
4. Is it easy to upgrade the RAM, processor and hard drive?
In looking to pick up a laptop and have it in my hands by late next week, I found that I had to go with the 2.26 GHz processor from the P-series. I was hoping for 2.4 GHz or better.
The reason I was willing to do so was that the notebook is coming equipped with an OCZ Vertex SSD at 120 GB.
My take is that the hard drive is still the bottleneck, so a mere 140 MHz difference in the presence of an SSD isn't going to be felt, and that a 2.4 GHz processor + SSD isn't going to really be snappier compared to a 2.26 GHz one with an SSD for most things.
I noticed that most of their current computers came out last July/August. Does Sony completely replace their whole line up every year or sometimes do they just update the previous year's model? Are any of the current models they offer more than a year old? How long before new laptops come out do they get announced?

Seems like TT is being ended in most countries. And Acer, Dell, MSI, Asus, Toshiba and HP have all releases their CULV lines, I'm wondering if Sony will come too.
Did anyone hear/read anything about it?
I am aware of the X series but that's not what I would call CULV.

Has anyone had experience with the NS255 (or even the NS235 or NS290) that came out at the very end of last year? I've read some reviews that say the older NS135 and NS190 are average at best, but can't find any reviews on the newer 2xx line. Here are the specs I've found on the NS255:
Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.00 GHz Processor
2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz Bus speed
4096 MB DDR2 (PC2-6400) RAM Max: 4GB
250 GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) LCD XBRITE-ECO Display

I'm not pleased with the lack of HDMI (my TV does not have VGA input) and Bluetooth but I suppose I could get by with S-video.
I'm set on a 15.4" screen and my needs are Web surfing, video over web, MS Office (lots of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel), light-moderate picture/video editing, light gaming (kids games), Skype, and video chat. I've run the FAQ under a different thread, but just trying to get some thoughts on this model.
I have the VAIO SR190 and want to upgrade to 8GB, but I have seen conflicting information if it will support 8GB.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a 3 month old Sony Z11 Laptop.
I have noticed some problems with my Screen, its like a faint line and a few dots in the top middle of the screen, it looks like its been caused by the keyboard when the lid is shut. It not a scratch but i think more marks than anything, tried cleaning but still no luck ?
Will HP offer a new series of Notebooks this year? Specifically 17 inch? I am assuming the 18 inch HDX and 16 inch HDX will be just getting spec upgrades.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI been working part time in computer service for 2 years now. Most notebook that come in are Dells, while Dell owns only 30% of Ukrainian laptop market. I have seen Dells that literally fall apart while under 3 years of usage. Most low to middle price boxes seem to be build from cheap plastic and 2nd grade parts.
Am I mistaken, is it a local phenomenon? What are your opinions of Dell notebooks?
I am trying to find all notebooks with RGB LED screens with at least Full HD resolution from Dell.
So far:
Dell Studio XPS 16 (glossy) 1920x1080
Dell Alienware M17x (glossy) 1920x1200
Dell Precision M6500 1920x1200
I'm seriously considering getting the Dell XPS 16 Studio laptop for my fiance.
She is starting to really enjoy photo editing and having the 1920x1080 screen would be fantastic compared to her current 15.4" 1280x800 laptop.
I was originally looking at 18.4" laptops from other manufacturers with the 1920x1080 resolution and 17" laptops with the 1920x1200 resolution .....
I'm having to buy a new laptop soon - looking at the XPS - but I don't know when this premium XPS customer service care will subside (which I expect to happen when Dell releases their new solution to getting consumers)

View 10 Replies View RelatedNew Acer Ethos Notebooks announced.
Quote:
Acer's aspirational laptops have a new Ethos to them now, and it clearly has something to do with entertainment. The newly revealed 18.4-inch 8943G sports a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a true 5.1 surround sound setup, meaning that somewhere within its shell reside five miniature speakers and a sub. Processor options range all the way up to the quad-core Core i7-820QM, which offers 8MB of built-in cache and a 1.73GHz clock speed that cranks all the way to 3.06GHz when required. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics and up to 1.28TB of storage (2x 640GB) complete the overkill recipe. The 5943G is basically a scaled down version, offering as it does 1366 x 768 resolution across a 15.6-inch display, a 2.1 internal speaker arrangement, and a merely adequate 640GB storage maximum. The rest of the specs are shared, including a 4,800mAh battery, which should perish quicker than you can say "desktop replacement." Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
my notebook has the optiarc 5500S BD Rom and I've only had it for a couple days. I've tried a few blu rays using quickplay but the playback is a little stuttery, especially when skipping from scene to scene. Overall, playback is fairly smooth but my eyes are really picky and I can tell it's not as smooth and fluid as it would be if I were to watch it on my ps3.
I'm wondering if PowerDVD (blu ray version) would be smoother. What are your experiences with blu ray on your notebooks and what software do you use?
