Sony :: SZ11 Line/marks On Screen Caused By Keyboard
Apr 2, 2009
i have a 3 month old Sony Z11 Laptop.
I have noticed some problems with my Screen, its like a faint line and a few dots in the top middle of the screen, it looks like its been caused by the keyboard when the lid is shut. It not a scratch but i think more marks than anything, tried cleaning but still no luck ?

Has anyone else noticed marks on their screen caused by the ridge that sits just above the trackpad?
I always ensure that the screen is against a folder or other flat surface in my bag so that it is protected from pressure. I have previously had screen damage to other laptops caused by keyboards and parts of the inner surface rubing against the screen when the laptop is closed.
In the last few months I have seen marks on my Z11's screen in the form of a line across the screen 2/3 of the way up where the ridge between the trackpad and keyboard occasionally presses against the screen but they had always wiped off. Yesterday I went to wipe them off and it seems as though thay are permanent
On a cheap laptop bad design like this is acceptable but on something this expensive it really isn't OK!! Especially when they market the screen as being resistant to marks...

the keyboard press into the screen when the laptop is closed and inside a bookbag and leave permanent marks on the screen that are not erasable?
What is the fix for this or is this something that Vaio Z owners live with?

when i start up internet explore for the first time, i get a thin line that run's right across my screen, but when i minimize IE and maximise it again its gone. it only seems to be there when i first start up IE.
this was a response i got from another forum.
"My psychic powers tell me you have a graphics card with poorly written drivers. You should check to see if there is an update available from the manufacturer. Then install it. Reboot. See if your problem goes away"
i have had a brand new motherboard fitted today, and this problem was there beforehand, i also have the latest drivers installed.

I have an Inspiron 6400 and recently a white line appeared on the screen. I took it to a repair shop and they said that the monitor needs to be replaced.
So firstly
I would like to know if it is possible to fix it without changing the screen, mainly because it is close to impossible finding a WSXGA screen in the country where I am staying now.

I am considering a VAIO FW series.
1. Does this series use BIOS or EFI?
2. Is the BIOS (EFI) locked down so that one must struggle to make adjustments, troubleshoot hardware etc?
3. If so, can it be unlocked?
4. Is it easy to upgrade the RAM, processor and hard drive?

I recent;y installed a version of windows on my Dell Laptop, Inspiron 6000. I worked for a week or two then when I turned it on a couple days ago, it won't go pass the black screen with the blinking white line. A user some where on this site on an other post that had similar problems said that  it to re-install and delete the existing partition and create another one with 120GB. I did but when creating another partition, I tried to type in the 122880 MB (122880MB = 120GB), and upon pressing ENTER, the numbers 122880 goes back to the number of MB of the partition disk space I had previously. I hope this all make sense. I do not have the money to buy another laptop. I have a Windows XP CD, but not the original. The laptop worked fine before with this version.
To fix the blinking line on the start-up black screen, all I need to do is to re-install windows XP and change the partition to 120GB. But every time I try to change the number of MB, it doesn't work but reverts back to the original number. Is there another way to fix the blinking-white-line-on-the-start-up-screen?
Also, I tried to use the repair control...doesn't work.

In looking to pick up a laptop and have it in my hands by late next week, I found that I had to go with the 2.26 GHz processor from the P-series. I was hoping for 2.4 GHz or better.
The reason I was willing to do so was that the notebook is coming equipped with an OCZ Vertex SSD at 120 GB.
My take is that the hard drive is still the bottleneck, so a mere 140 MHz difference in the presence of an SSD isn't going to be felt, and that a 2.4 GHz processor + SSD isn't going to really be snappier compared to a 2.26 GHz one with an SSD for most things.

I noticed that most of their current computers came out last July/August. Does Sony completely replace their whole line up every year or sometimes do they just update the previous year's model? Are any of the current models they offer more than a year old? How long before new laptops come out do they get announced?

Seems like TT is being ended in most countries. And Acer, Dell, MSI, Asus, Toshiba and HP have all releases their CULV lines, I'm wondering if Sony will come too.
Did anyone hear/read anything about it?
I am aware of the X series but that's not what I would call CULV.

I have a concern about possible heat damage to my Dell XPS 1530. I had my laptop in its case, turned off, in a metal locker at work. When I came to work one day they had been having problems with the heating system in the building, and my office was very hot, probably about 100 F. I don't know how long the office had been that hot, but possibly all night. The locker may have gotten even hotter, since it's near the radiator.
When I took my laptop out of its case, it was very warm to the touch. I stupidly turned it on and began using it while it was still warm, in the hot room (although I had opened the window and the room was starting to cool down). I read afterward that it should only be operated in an environment up to 95 F. Now I'm worried that I might have damaged it, although it seems to be working fine. How can I tell if any damage was done? The laptop is a Dell XPS 1530. (This all happened a few days ago.)
Would it be worthwhile to have it inspected to see if any damage was done? Or would it be better just to continue using it and see if any problems pop up?

Has anyone had experience with the NS255 (or even the NS235 or NS290) that came out at the very end of last year? I've read some reviews that say the older NS135 and NS190 are average at best, but can't find any reviews on the newer 2xx line. Here are the specs I've found on the NS255:
Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.00 GHz Processor
2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz Bus speed
4096 MB DDR2 (PC2-6400) RAM Max: 4GB
250 GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) LCD XBRITE-ECO Display
Built-in 1.3 Megapixel Webcamera and Microphone
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 with up to 2040MB Shared Video Memory
DVD±R/RW Drive with Double Layer
Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN 802.11a/b/g/n
10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet LAN
Built-in Memory Stick® Standard/Duo PRO with MagicGate™ Card Reader
Built-in Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot
ExpressCard 34 Slot
Connections: 4 x USB 2.0, IEEE 1394, Microphone-in, VGA, RJ-11 (Modem), RJ-45
Approximate Unit Dimensions: 14.18" (W) x 1.5" (H) x 10.63" (D)
Approximate Unit Weight: 6.4 Pounds
I'm not pleased with the lack of HDMI (my TV does not have VGA input) and Bluetooth but I suppose I could get by with S-video.
I'm set on a 15.4" screen and my needs are Web surfing, video over web, MS Office (lots of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel), light-moderate picture/video editing, light gaming (kids games), Skype, and video chat. I've run the FAQ under a different thread, but just trying to get some thoughts on this model.

i have had my Studio XPS 16 for about 6 months now. Love it, its got the Edge to Edge RGB display 1920x1080. Looks good. I am wanting to know if anyone is having an issue where the screen is getting SCUFFED? Mine appears to be scuffed exactly where the keys touch the screen when closed. for instance the power button has WORN a scuffed up area that matches up exactly when the lid is closed. also the SPACE BAR, INSER,PRINTSCR, DEL keys. has anyone else experienced? Its almost like the keys stick up a little when the lid is closed and scuffing the screen
