So i would really like to see some pictures of it, and there arent many of the Classic Silver model on the internet.

So if someone own the laptop, i beg you please take some pictures of it and post it here...

(Oh and i can see the laptop since Sony only sell the SR-Series on SONY STYLE and not in the stores..

Just performed a successful XP downgrade on my Vaio Z520, but have noticed that on this copy of the Vaio Silver Desktop Theme/Appearance doesn't exist.

I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.

Sony :: Skin To Preserve Finish On The Vaio's, Particularly On The Mouse Buttons So The Silver Stippled Paint Finish Wears Away

Apr 5, 2010

Is there any way to preserve finish of the Sony Vaio FW, particularly on the mouse buttons and where the palm-rest is, I hear the silver stippled paint finish wears away leaving bare white plastic underneath.

Is there a skin or plastic screen cover that you guys use or recommend to prevent this or hide defects?

I recently picked up this bad boy for just $744 (after 12.3% bing cashback (Google it if you don't know what it is)).

[url]

Has anyone heard any other issues with this laptop?

It has the 1600x900 screen which I've heard some criticism of (I heard something about it having a one-lamp "eco" screen) but I don't know if that applies to the model I bought or how good the eco screen is.

If I can get a skin that is precut for that laptop's dimensions in particular (nothing fancy, just black would be good), that would be awesome.

I'm considering this skin, but it's not precut, and I don't know how good it is...

Sony :: Vista And Classic Logon Screen Behavior

May 7, 2009

I have vista x64 on my vaio sz6 laptop and was thinking about the great Windows XP classic logon screen(press ctrl+alt+delete to logon and how it had empty boxes to enter user name and password). I was able to get this working properly on 1/2 computers w/ vista but i have small issues on the laptop. heres what i did:

(this particular method only works for vista business/ultimate users..there are other ways though w/ regedit)

> Type secpol.msc in Vista's Start Menu Search Bar and hit Enter. This will open the Local Security Policy editor. Navigate to Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options. Now on Right hand side, look for Interactive Logon: Do not display last username. Right click on it and open its Properties. Set it to Enabled > Apply. dont close everything out yet though.

> right underneath that setting is Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL. Right click on it and open its Properties. Set it to Disabled > Apply

The 2 problems only on the laptop are:

1) ctrl +alt + delete will only work 1 time before the welcome screen

2) on the vista welcome screen...it shows me the box that says Please swipe your finger to login(upek) AND it gives the name "Other user", which isnt an user account that ive made. (phantom account) If i click on "Other User"..it then gives me the empty boxes to enter user name and password. where is this "Other User" coming from?? ive even tried logging in with "Other User" w/o a password and of course it says failed to logon.

I think the upek fingerprint software(v5.8, etc) or tpm v3.0.2.2 software is causing this issue because they are the only difference between my laptop and my desktop. my desktop works perfect just w/ doing whats above. (Ex. says ctrl + alt + delete to log on every time and also 2 blank fields w/ user name and password.)

Apple :: IPod Classic - Switching From Windows

Jan 5, 2009

I own an iPod Classic right now, 160 GB formatted currently for Windows. In iTunes(on Windows) I currently have it set at "Manually Manage Songs and Videos." I'm wondering if when I plug it into my MacBook, if it'll sync my songs in iTunes right away and I'll lose all my songs or if it'll ask me if it wants to sync. I'm just scared because I don't wanna lose the songs I have because I don't have backups.

Apple :: Classic Macbook Pro Fans Fail

Jun 30, 2009

I can't define fail as stop spinning, but there will be a buzz-saw, grinding like the blades are hitting something, or a sound that resembles an approaching airplane (this WWII diving airplanes) that will continue to grow. It is audible at around 3000 rpm, and when you tilt the laptop at 45 degrees it seems worse. It's not a healthy sound. To hear it the best, run your fans at 6000 rpm and then slow them down to 2000 rpm. At 2000 rpm the fans continue to be inaudible. Unfortunately, it is this audible/inaudible combo that seems to make the problem more annoying b/c I can clearly hear the contrasts. If it was always there, I might be able to tune it out.

This is not an isolated complaint about the classic mbp, but I've had so many of them over the last few years and all of them eventually exhibit this behavior. Every time I have taken it into Apple (about 3 different classic mbps) they have replaced the fan and said it was faulty. Whether they just wanted to make me happy or not is unknown, but a new fan did seem to help...until a few months later.

I'm now going to try Artic Silver 5 to see if that'll be up to the job, in a last ditch before I have to get Dell out here again (I'm not impressed with this at all).....................................

Dell :: Arctic Silver 5 In Laptops

Apr 19, 2009

i got a dell XPS M1710 Its been overheating lately (gpu kissing 90) and shutting down i blew out the air vents and got tons of dust out but its still running hot. I figure its got a lot of dust up on the heat sinks and the like. That seems to be the main problem i noticed cruising the threads here. Its under warranty still so i called dell to come out and dust it, ect. They said they'd do that and replace the fans/heatsink, ect. I guess that's fine, but when i asked if they use AS5, or if they would if i provided them with some, the guy said they dont because it can cause shorts in laptops or something ... is this true?

I asked what they use and he said thermal pads and some kinda paste combo.. thermal pads generally suck, if theyre replacing all this wouldn't AS5 be the best bet? or can it really cause problems. If its being taken apart and switched up id really prefer the guy slapping some AS5 on there even if i gotta buy it.

someone else sugested offering to use AS Ceramique since that should be non conductive, but ive never used that before. My main concern is that if theyre taking it all apart i dont want pads and their junk back on there, because i always thought pads suck.

can the silver really cause a short?

Also i was thinking that maybe i dont want them replacing the fans. Im pretty sure they use refurbished junk with the parts, wouldn't it be better to leave the old fans that worked fine in there, instead of risking some broken piece of junk being slapped in?

i called them over a week ago before going on vacation and they said i couldn't set up an apointment more than a week out so i had to wait till i got back. I just got home today and am waiting for some sugestions before i call them and set this up

Dell :: Artic Silver 5 Vs. Stock Cooling

Oct 1, 2008

i did some tests before and after applying artic silver to both my cpu and my gpu, here are the results:

Stock cooling temps :

GPU max: 81C
CPU0 max: 75C
CPU1 max: 76C

( the photo was actually incorrect, as i found it was from when i was testing overclocking setups )

then i opened up my lappy and applied some AS5:
CIMG0676.JPG
CIMG0677.JPG
CIMG0679.JPG

and finally my temps are with the new AS5:
temps artic cooling.jpg

( wut? them CPUs are the only ones feelin it :P )

now the air that goes out of the vent is really hot, this did not happen with the stock dell cooling paste.

i just applied it, so should take 200 hours to take full effect

*Update*

After about 190 or 200 hours of use, my temps are really the same... i dont know if it could be winter, because in winter my house gets a bit warmer.. i will, however, try to get to the same room temperatures i had back then and do the stress test

*Update (again )*

After removing and re-applying the AS5, i found out what i was doing wrong:

1- i did not put enough AS5, it needed a bit more for the heat assembly to have perfect contact

2- i did not put enough pressure on the GPUs screws because i was afraid of breaking it

After doing this i find that on the first stress test i get 3 or 4 C lower temps ( from 82 to 79 C ) il do some more stress tests and update the temps.

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.

Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.

So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.

Sony :: Vaio CW Or Vaio E Series

Mar 22, 2010

Am planning to get a sony laptop for me. The design simply rocks I am getting mixed reviews about cw and E series. But i made up my mind to get one.

My budget is aroung 40000rupees. Thats around 800$. So suggest me a better one between these two for occasional moderate and less(mosltly) demanding games. I dont care whether its 14 or 15 inch.

Am looking at lower end versions of both the models.

Only difference is CW uses Nvidia Geforce 310 and the E series uses some Radeon 5000 series one. CW has 14 inch screen whereas E series has a 15.5 inch screen. In the models which i am looking at both have matte finish and both has WXGA:1366 x 768 VAIO Display.

which one should i go for. whether the screen quality will be on par to Inspiron one atleast? ( I dont need HD).
