Dell replaced my motherboard and heatsink for a second time due to heat issues. In the last couple of days, I've noticed it's climbed yet again.
I'm now going to try Artic Silver 5 to see if that'll be up to the job, in a last ditch before I have to get Dell out here again (I'm not impressed with this at all).....................................
I've noticed that it's not that easy to get access to the CPU and GPU in the M6400, on the M4400 it's much easier, anybody has done it before ?
View 5 Replies View Relatedi did some tests before and after applying artic silver to both my cpu and my gpu, here are the results:
Stock cooling temps :
GPU max: 81C
CPU0 max: 75C
CPU1 max: 76C
( the photo was actually incorrect, as i found it was from when i was testing overclocking setups )
then i opened up my lappy and applied some AS5:

and finally my temps are with the new AS5:
temps artic cooling.jpg
( wut? them CPUs are the only ones feelin it :P )
now the air that goes out of the vent is really hot, this did not happen with the stock dell cooling paste.
i just applied it, so should take 200 hours to take full effect
*Update*
After about 190 or 200 hours of use, my temps are really the same... i dont know if it could be winter, because in winter my house gets a bit warmer.. i will, however, try to get to the same room temperatures i had back then and do the stress test
*Update (again )*
After removing and re-applying the AS5, i found out what i was doing wrong:
1- i did not put enough AS5, it needed a bit more for the heat assembly to have perfect contact
2- i did not put enough pressure on the GPUs screws because i was afraid of breaking it
After doing this i find that on the first stress test i get 3 or 4 C lower temps ( from 82 to 79 C ) il do some more stress tests and update the temps.
I have three processor questions regarding the M1330:
1. Is it possible to upgrade from the Intel T5250 to the T8100?
2. Are Dell processors a proprietary size or shape?
3. Can I artic silver the processor to make it run cooler?
I'm probably going to re order once I get through all the bs I have been going through with Dell (read here: The continued adventures about a boy and his laptop... .
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there a guide available anywhere showing how I am supposed to renew the thermal paste on these laptops (I have 1645 in particular). I heard it can have a great deal of effect on temperatures.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi got a dell XPS M1710 Its been overheating lately (gpu kissing 90) and shutting down i blew out the air vents and got tons of dust out but its still running hot. I figure its got a lot of dust up on the heat sinks and the like. That seems to be the main problem i noticed cruising the threads here. Its under warranty still so i called dell to come out and dust it, ect. They said they'd do that and replace the fans/heatsink, ect. I guess that's fine, but when i asked if they use AS5, or if they would if i provided them with some, the guy said they dont because it can cause shorts in laptops or something ... is this true?
I asked what they use and he said thermal pads and some kinda paste combo.. thermal pads generally suck, if theyre replacing all this wouldn't AS5 be the best bet? or can it really cause problems. If its being taken apart and switched up id really prefer the guy slapping some AS5 on there even if i gotta buy it.
someone else sugested offering to use AS Ceramique since that should be non conductive, but ive never used that before. My main concern is that if theyre taking it all apart i dont want pads and their junk back on there, because i always thought pads suck.
can the silver really cause a short?
Also i was thinking that maybe i dont want them replacing the fans. Im pretty sure they use refurbished junk with the parts, wouldn't it be better to leave the old fans that worked fine in there, instead of risking some broken piece of junk being slapped in?
i called them over a week ago before going on vacation and they said i couldn't set up an apointment more than a week out so i had to wait till i got back. I just got home today and am waiting for some sugestions before i call them and set this up
i have a dell xps 1530, with geforce 8600 gt, i would like to know, if i apply the arctic silver 5, can i reduce some degres? or is it the same?
why dell notebooks has a poor coolling system, when i had the hp pavilion dv6645us i never had problem with temperature and noises
The silver trim that runs around the border of the case is starting to wear away and pit around where my palms rest. Is this something covered by warranty? And if not is it reasonably affordable / simple to fix?
The main reason I wanted this computer was for it's looks, so the fact that it's already starting to form visual defects is really, really annoying.
For those who replaced stock paste with AS5, without making any other alterations how significant was your temperature decline (average CPU and GPU decline).
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just ordered an XPS "Geniuine Keyboard" m1710, and it came and it isn't silver whats up with that?
My buds m1710 is silver. mine is gey.
did they change the part #?
what is the part # for the silver one?
and where could I get one .
woot! think i'm gonna get one. too bad the coupons didn't last this long
View 10 Replies View RelatedWell the black keyboard that comes on the 9400/E1705 is a tad bit too loud for my taste. I was thinking of swapping it out for the M1710 keyboard, if its any quieter. At least mine here on the 9400 you can hear a mile away if you're typing away, and the "Enter" key is especially noisy.
View 12 Replies View Relatedim thinking about buying the Sony Vaio SR-Series..
Unfortunately the only color option in Denmark is Classic Silver!
So i would really like to see some pictures of it, and there arent many of the Classic Silver model on the internet.
So if someone own the laptop, i beg you please take some pictures of it and post it here...
(Oh and i can see the laptop since Sony only sell the SR-Series on SONY STYLE and not in the stores..
I was giving my 1645 a nice cleaning when I noticed a depression on the left hand side palm corner. The black of the palm rest actually sinks below the the silver trimming. Is this normal? is it supposed to be flush? Does it mean I need yet ANOTHER part replaced on this damn laptop?
View 10 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to preserve finish of the Sony Vaio FW, particularly on the mouse buttons and where the palm-rest is, I hear the silver stippled paint finish wears away leaving bare white plastic underneath.
Is there a skin or plastic screen cover that you guys use or recommend to prevent this or hide defects?
I recently picked up this bad boy for just $744 (after 12.3% bing cashback (Google it if you don't know what it is)).

Has anyone heard any other issues with this laptop?
It has the 1600x900 screen which I've heard some criticism of (I heard something about it having a one-lamp "eco" screen) but I don't know if that applies to the model I bought or how good the eco screen is.
If I can get a skin that is precut for that laptop's dimensions in particular (nothing fancy, just black would be good), that would be awesome.
I'm considering this skin, but it's not precut, and I don't know how good it is...

Just performed a successful XP downgrade on my Vaio Z520, but have noticed that on this copy of the Vaio Silver Desktop Theme/Appearance doesn't exist.
I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.
i don't have a clear conclussion about the max ram that E1705 support. Some guys says that support 4GB and xp reads 3.5, but others says that support 2GB. and some users on this forum, in their signs, says 2GB of ram on E1705 laptops.
i wanna do a upgrade of ram , because i have 1GB. but i don't know if I will be able to put 3GB on my laptop..
is it possible to put in Dell Inspiron E1705 4 Gb of RAM (2x2 Gb)? Please, respond if you know it surely or if you tried to do it.
Also, can anybody reccomend me good processor for this model? Have Core Duo t2400 - 1.83 Ggz.
I was considering selling my E1705 before but after some research and input from others I came to the conclusion that I should just stick my my E1705 because the resale value is much lower than I expected (I wanted to sell my machine, get a small laptop for mobility and build a desktop).
So now I want to just upgrade my laptop to the max and maybe just get a shitty eee pc as my 2nd laptop to carry around everywhere.
Where is room to upgrade, things I am considering so far to up is
a T7600 CPU, 4GB 667mhz RAM, 200gb 7200rpm HD, GTX is a maybe... don't know how much difference there will be. How should I change my choices and what else can I upgrade.

I've been having a problem with my computer for the past 3 days, even when i am not doing anything, no programs running or anything the both cores indicate 100% the computer gets extremly slow. I've already formated the computer and it did it again with nothing but windows installed on it.
I tought it was getting too hot or something but the temp is 47 c AVG. i ran Dell diagnostic tool and everything Passed.
I was readin a review on cnet last week, and there was an hp and a toshiba laptop with the same stats.. anyway, they did tests and cnet says that the quality of the RAM was probably why the test results were so diffrent.
Im looking to get more RAM for my e1705.
This week I finally made the choice to get 2x2G sticks for my E1705. They arrived today and I installed them as soon as I could.
But unfortunately Windows XP Pro SP2 wouldn't start completely (it froze somewhere in the screen with the logo and the moving bar underneath). Windows does start in dafe mode and reports 3.25G.
The funny thing is, Mac OS X does load completely and run without a problem. I even mentions 4G installed.
I did a quick memtest and the sticks seem to be ok. I changed the order of the sticks and no difference.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a setting I need to change on my Windows. Or would I need to reinstall it (doesn't seem logical).
Purchased a e1705 in June of 2006. Started having the NMI parity errors within a month.
Contact Dell and they swapped out memory. The problem seemed to be better, but still linger for a while with the NMI errors. Installed Vista on the system and cant remember ever having an error. Then I installed Counter-strike, and started getting the error back. Recontacted Dell and they replaced the motherboard and ram. That hosed my vista install where printing, control panel, stopped working. Backed up my data and reinstalled after formating the drive Windows XP using the Dell disks I received. Now the system isnted on for more than 5-15 minutes without an NMI error.
Oh, now dell is wanting me to send my laptop to a depot where they can make sure its fixed. I will now be without any laptop, working or not for around 2 weeks.
I have the 4 year extended warranty with accident protection.
Will Dell replace this unit? Their is no way they can replace the parts, which model will they replace it with? specs are below............................
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I bought an Inspiron 9400 bout two years ago, its a piece of shi*t ... i've had i dunno about 6 or 7 service calls now .... ANYWAYS
When I went to purchase a laptop I was looking at both the XPS and the laptop I decided on (E1705), and the only thing I noticed that was different was that the XPS was substantially more expensive, and had a different look ...
Not to insult anyone's taste or anything, but the look of the XPS is tacky as hell lol ... I mean, its inundated with the word XPS everywhere (even on the touchpad ... ?), i've never seen one in person ... maybe someone can explain to me haha
Anyways, the purpose of this post isn't about the aesthetic differences between the two series of laptops lol. A friend of mine who is in the market to purchase a laptop has asked me what the differences were ... and I couldnt answer him (hence why i'm posting)
What i'm asking then is, other then its shell, assuming the CPU, GPU, RAM, display are identical what is it that makes the XPS better and at a much higher price? Is the motherboard better, or are XPSes less prone to random breaking? If anyone can differentiate the two for me i'd appreciate it, so I can help my friend out before he drops $2.5k on a laptop
I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my e1705.
Apparently everything seems working.
But on the Device manager, one thing is not recognized.
It is shown as:
Other devices - Base System Device.
Its location is PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3.
How can I overclock my Dell E1705?.......................
View 5 Replies View RelatedTrying to let the AS5 set right now, hope the temps are lower than the other CPU since it was using one of those cheap cpu pad things.
Next on the upgrade list is the biggest 7200RPM drive that will fit.
Then another 2Gb of RAM for a total of 4Gb!
