Dell :: Add Artic Silver To The M6400 ?
Mar 30, 2009I've noticed that it's not that easy to get access to the CPU and GPU in the M6400, on the M4400 it's much easier, anybody has done it before ?

Sep 27, 2007i just recived my tube of artic Solver 5 and i need some help on how to properly apply it.
how to i get to those parts, ie. what screws do i need to remove.

Jan 26, 2010Dell replaced my motherboard and heatsink for a second time due to heat issues. In the last couple of days, I've noticed it's climbed yet again.
I'm now going to try Artic Silver 5 to see if that'll be up to the job, in a last ditch before I have to get Dell out here again (I'm not impressed with this at all).....................................

Oct 1, 2008i did some tests before and after applying artic silver to both my cpu and my gpu, here are the results:
Stock cooling temps :
GPU max: 81C
CPU0 max: 75C
CPU1 max: 76C
( the photo was actually incorrect, as i found it was from when i was testing overclocking setups )
then i opened up my lappy and applied some AS5:

and finally my temps are with the new AS5:

( wut? them CPUs are the only ones feelin it :P )
now the air that goes out of the vent is really hot, this did not happen with the stock dell cooling paste.
i just applied it, so should take 200 hours to take full effect

After about 190 or 200 hours of use, my temps are really the same... i dont know if it could be winter, because in winter my house gets a bit warmer.. i will, however, try to get to the same room temperatures i had back then and do the stress test

After removing and re-applying the AS5, i found out what i was doing wrong:
1- i did not put enough AS5, it needed a bit more for the heat assembly to have perfect contact
2- i did not put enough pressure on the GPUs screws because i was afraid of breaking it
After doing this i find that on the first stress test i get 3 or 4 C lower temps ( from 82 to 79 C ) il do some more stress tests and update the temps.

What is the main difference with the M6400 and the M6400 Covet?
I configured both with the same specs and the Covet is about $900 more in price?
Does orange paint really cost that much?

Feb 20, 2010Is there a guide available anywhere showing how I am supposed to renew the thermal paste on these laptops (I have 1645 in particular). I heard it can have a great deal of effect on temperatures.

Apr 19, 2009i got a dell XPS M1710 Its been overheating lately (gpu kissing 90) and shutting down i blew out the air vents and got tons of dust out but its still running hot. I figure its got a lot of dust up on the heat sinks and the like. That seems to be the main problem i noticed cruising the threads here. Its under warranty still so i called dell to come out and dust it, ect. They said they'd do that and replace the fans/heatsink, ect. I guess that's fine, but when i asked if they use AS5, or if they would if i provided them with some, the guy said they dont because it can cause shorts in laptops or something ... is this true?
I asked what they use and he said thermal pads and some kinda paste combo.. thermal pads generally suck, if theyre replacing all this wouldn't AS5 be the best bet? or can it really cause problems. If its being taken apart and switched up id really prefer the guy slapping some AS5 on there even if i gotta buy it.
someone else sugested offering to use AS Ceramique since that should be non conductive, but ive never used that before. My main concern is that if theyre taking it all apart i dont want pads and their junk back on there, because i always thought pads suck.
can the silver really cause a short?
Also i was thinking that maybe i dont want them replacing the fans. Im pretty sure they use refurbished junk with the parts, wouldn't it be better to leave the old fans that worked fine in there, instead of risking some broken piece of junk being slapped in?
i called them over a week ago before going on vacation and they said i couldn't set up an apointment more than a week out so i had to wait till i got back. I just got home today and am waiting for some sugestions before i call them and set this up

Jan 27, 2010The silver trim that runs around the border of the case is starting to wear away and pit around where my palms rest. Is this something covered by warranty? And if not is it reasonably affordable / simple to fix?
The main reason I wanted this computer was for it's looks, so the fact that it's already starting to form visual defects is really, really annoying.

Sep 6, 2007Well the black keyboard that comes on the 9400/E1705 is a tad bit too loud for my taste. I was thinking of swapping it out for the M1710 keyboard, if its any quieter. At least mine here on the 9400 you can hear a mile away if you're typing away, and the "Enter" key is especially noisy.

Dell :: 1645/1647 Palm Rest Sinks Below Silver Trimming
Apr 23, 2010I was giving my 1645 a nice cleaning when I noticed a depression on the left hand side palm corner. The black of the palm rest actually sinks below the the silver trimming. Is this normal? is it supposed to be flush? Does it mean I need yet ANOTHER part replaced on this damn laptop?

Has anyone heard any other issues with this laptop?
It has the 1600x900 screen which I've heard some criticism of (I heard something about it having a one-lamp "eco" screen) but I don't know if that applies to the model I bought or how good the eco screen is.
If I can get a skin that is precut for that laptop's dimensions in particular (nothing fancy, just black would be good), that would be awesome.
I'm considering this skin, but it's not precut, and I don't know how good it is...

I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.

Apr 16, 2009I guess I'm about to get a mobile workstation. I already got an M90 it is great. Only one dead/stuck pixel and the front panel silver button paint came off in a few month of usage.
But I love it. So I am thinking of getting an M6400. Can you back me up on this one..?? Please if you own one tell me the pros and cons.. Have you noticed any Dead/stuck pixels.
What about built quality, feel, comfort, performance, heat, cooling, fan noise, screen quality ( thinking of LEG or RGB LED)..
Any creeking noise while opening the lid or holding or working on the laptop?? Any thing you can tell me about this beast of a machine will be a great help for me indeed

Oct 23, 2008my M6400 is here - just wanted to post some first impressions.
X9100 - 3.06ghz
4GB DDR3
Quadro 3700M
1440x900 WXGA+
Wireless 5300
Bluetooth 370
DVD+RW slot load
Silver Color
Backlit keyboard
Webcam
2x 80GB 5400rpm drives
2 Intel X25-M 80GB SSD drives will be replacing those 80GB's.
First - my first thoughts are that this system is Fantastic!
The screen is great - its an LG, fantastic colors, no dead pixels. Typical viewing angles for non LED screen, not great, but not noticeably bad either.
No noticeable bleeding, no graininess - very happy with the screen.
Ran 3Dmark 06 (1280x800, stock drivers) - 11,619
GPU temp was around 80 C - not bad at all.
So far, very happy. Putting the SSD ddrives in now - will post more thoughts as I do more. Will post pics ASAP.
Update 1: 2 80GB SSDs are in place - this has Intel's Matrix Storage which allows the creation of one RAID1 volume (which I will use for valuable data) and a RAID0 volume for the rest of the space - this is very nice - get the benefits of both types of RAID in one system!
Update 2: The power brick is completely absurd. Its HUGE - 210W. The good news is that I plugged in a 130W from a M4400 and although I get the popup about the AC adapter not being at least 150W, it does charge the battery and allow the system to run. To me, this is an acceptable alternative to lugging around the giant brick, at least for most things on the road - Later on, I will test the system with this adapter and see what kind of slowdown is caused.

Dell :: Dead M6400
May 27, 2009Whilst working away at my desk, M6400 docked it just powered down.
Pressing the power button causes it (the power button) to light briefly and then go out. Pressing FN+Power (as requested by Dell Tech) does nothing at all.
I've tried it with another PSU (I got 2, one with M6400, other with docking station) - and if you plug the PSU in, and then hit power on the laptop - the blue light on the PSU goes out - and doesn't come back on till the power is cycled. The M6400 does nothing during all of this.
The PSUs work just fine with my D820.
Dell techs are coming tomorrow to fix it. I'll let you know what they say!

Jun 14, 2009I've just bought a refurbished M6400. It comes with no preinstalled OS. I have a dell install disk for Windows XP SP2. Is it ok to install this on my M6400? I will then update to SP3 over the web.
I guess i will also need to install drivers for the graphics card, etc etc.
Please let me know if you have any advice and pitfalls to watch out for.
I'm also considering adding a second hard drive. What drive specification do i need?

Jun 20, 2009I know this is a workstation, and not a gaming laptop, but I still want to use this machine for some after-hour gaming.
What I find odd is that the HP 8730w (which was recently reviewed) got scored a massive 14,263 at 1280x800 resolution,
but the Dell M6400 seems to around 11,600+/-. Odd considering the Dell M6400 is a more powerful system?

Mar 10, 2009I recently noticed that you can not configure a 64bit covet any more, which results in not being able to configure more than 4GB Ram. Also, the covet has only a few specified configurations that are allowed.
Is there an issue with the 64bit? Anyone know why Dell removed the 64bit options?
