My power plug on my laptop finally gave out. I cant find any articles on taking a VGN-AW series laptop apart. This is my second AW series which is a VGN-AW120J. I know theirs 2 different plugs for them. The on I have doesn't have a enclosure inside the plug and has 2 prongs that touch the pin in the power adapter.
View 8 RepliesMy X200 (three or four years old) has a new battery (few months only) and has never had any power issue. Suddenly since last week it will not operate without the power supply plug in. Â Battery is showing 100% and condition excellent, but the second I remove/unpower the power supply plug, the system crashes. On restart with power supply attached, the battery indicator shows 1%! Â It then gradually creeps up to 4% and after maybe 5 mins it leaps back up to 100%.

What I'm asking for is a picture, or a rough explanation of how LONG is the gold'ish connector (the center pin) inside that plug.
I'm asking because I want to find out whether it's the motherboard power connector that's broken or if the center pin inside the DC power plug somehow broke and doesn't provide the power..
It is now charging and all but when I try and boot all that happens is the the Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock lights turn on for about a second or 2 then they turn off. Also the "charging" light extinguishes when the others light. I get no beeps, fans or anything.
Now my buddy, said that he did a similar replacement on his daughters laptop and that "the board needed reprogrammed afterwords"?? I'm not sure what he means by this .....

I lost my old charger and I need to buy a new one but I want to make sure that I but the correct one.
I've had my laptop for a little bit under 2 months, so these are the things I have noticed.Â
Issue number 1: When you plug in the power cord into the computer, the screen freezes on what it is currently on. I noticed this issue because occasionally when I plug in my power cord, and try to use the mousepad to select something, the mouse pointer is gone! I have to unplug-replug the power cable to get the mouse pointer to show again. It seems to have to do with the screen
Issue number 2: when I carry my E7440 around in my bad, or have it shut for long periods of time >3 hours (I just simply close the lid), the computer will SHUT DOWN. The thing will shut down completly, even though I simply closed the lid! At first I thought it was just going into hibernate, so I disabled hibernate in my power settings. But nope, even when the computer is asleep, it will occasionally shut it self down for no reason at all.
Just now, I closed the lid on my laptop, and put in in my bag, then walked to my office about 10 minutes away. When I sat down at my desk and opened my laptop, to my surprise, it had shut down by itself! All of my open windows, browsers, and applications were closed, and upon opening chrome and microsoft word, I was greeted by "your browser did not shut down correctly" and "microsoft word has recovered files". This points to the conclusion that it was not hibernates fault, but instead a issue with the laptop itself shutting down when it is put in sleep. This issue needs to be rectified immediately if it is a widespread issue. Â
Issue number three: When the computer comes back from hibernate or sleep, the computer is very very sluggish, even when plugged in. It is sluggish forever, OR until the power plan is set from whatever it is to "high performance". upon switching to the previous powerplan from high performance, the swiftness of the system is restored. This indicates to me that the system is throttling itself after it resumes from hibernation, why. This needs to be fixed; many people (myself included) just thought that the system itself was slow and underpowered, not realizing that it was just throttling itself when it emerged from sleep or hibernate.
I bought this inspiron 15r 5521. Its approx 2 year old. There was warning in battery status in the PC checkup. Few days afterwards the laptop did not start up. I searched and did a hard reset..BUT when i shut it down or hibernate . again its like dead and i have to plug in the power cord for 20 min and do a hard reset to turn it on . It also happens that if i shut down while the power cord is plugged and i take it out and again plug it , it stops charging..(again need a hard reset).
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently replaced the CMOS battery ourselves after getting the 5 beeps. Â Put everything back together but a couple of screws were loose and came out. Â Regardless the computer booted up fine and worked for a week. Â Yesterday it would not power on, at all. Â Unscrewed everything, opened it up, found some loose connections and tightened up, then replaced missing screws, seemed that they were tight and not spinning in place. Â Computer powered on fine. Â Next day, computer powers on again. Â Then, after a brief power down, it won't come on. Â AGAIN. Â Opened everything back up and saw the hard drive was loose so tightened that up via external screw. Â Put back together and made sure all connections were tight and re-screwed. Â Still will not power on.

Anyone use one of Kensington's universal power supplies with their VGN-SR? Trying to figure out which "smart tip" to use.
Their compatibility wizard on the Kensington website doesn't list the VGN-SR290; only lists a Vaio SR series. I think this may be referring to an older series and not the VGN-SR line. The tip the wizard recommends for this 'Vaio SR series" is N15, which, according to the power supply instrcution manual has output volatge of 15-17V. Another tip, tip N27, has output volatge of 17-20V. The power brick that came with my SR290 indicates a 19.5V output (Sony VGP-AC19V25 - 19.5V, 4.7a)

I have just upgraded my old Sony Vaio VGN SZ370P to WIN 7 and I am very happy with it.
The computer still performs beautifully. However, I know that as a laptop its end is near (Three years and hundreds of thousands of miles.)
It is already running very hot, though that does not seem to be affecting it at this point.
My question is simple, I have noticed that the SZ line seems to have disappeared. It looks like it has been replaced by the Z line

I am wondering how can I later on clone my OS from the HDD to SSD? Is it possible to plug the SSD in over USB, use some tool to clone the entire disk (including the recovery partition) and then simply switch to SSD?

I have a Vaio VGN-SZ61WN and I would live to get the HDD replaced with the one I've just bought. Thing is, it doesn't look too straight forward to me. The HDD is situated on the bottom left of the notebook when looking at the keyboard. There isn't a way in from the back. Just thought I'd ask before I destroy my notebook

I am a frequent traveller who needs a reliable and ultra-portable notebook. I have owned a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ37 for almost 18 months. While I like it very much, it is very slow to boot up (XP). For that reason, I decided to replace the notorious in-built HDD with a SDD.
I have succeeded in replacing the original one with a Photofast G-Monster 1.8” ZIF SSD V 4 and am very happy with the result. The following is my experience.
When I decided to change to SSD, I did a lot of internet search and finally took 3 key decisions:
(1)Which SDD? – After a lot of search, I settled for G-Monster 1.8” ZIF SSD V 4. It is not the least expensive, but I am happy with the results.
(2)DIY? – A few repair shops could provide the service but they could not assure compatibility or system installation.
I decided to do it myself which is a good decision because I had to re-open the case 3 times.
(3)Secret of opening the case – There are a few weblinks offer pictures and tips on the internet. They are essential for non-technical people like me .....
I have just disasembled and cleaned, (to the best of my abilty), my SONY SZ2XP comp using compressed gas. Hopefully,
it will yield some results getting rid of all the dust, although i did feel like i could have done better if i managed to disassemble it further to reach all affected areas.
I'll continue to my question though, I unscrewed the heatsink and noticed that the thermal paste on the cpu looked really misapplied.
It has some big lumps of paste and seems very unevenly applied. I have owned this computer for about 2 years or so, and i have never disassembled it until now
I'm about to pull the trigger on a FW, but it has a 320GB 4200rpm. HD.
I've planned on buying a WD Scorpio Black later and the replacing it.
How complicated would that be? What I mean is, that I can do the hardware replacing and all that, but is it enough that I would do a recovery disc with the original HD inside and then replace the HD's and then just boot from the disc. Or do I need to fiddle around with the SATA drivers,

I'm currently thinking of buying a Sony SR series laptop, but unfortunately here in Sweden we only get two configurations:
Vaio SR49 - P8800, Radeon 3470 256MB
Vaio SR41 - T6400, Radeon 4750 512MB
Since I would like P8800+Radeon 4750, the only possible way seems to get a SR41 and upgrade the cpu. Has anyone here got any experience on upgrading a laptop CPU? More specifically, upgrading from a T-series to a P-series.
I guess they use the same motherboards, so I can't imagine it would be incompatible, but I'm wondering whether it requires any BIOS changes which would be hard to do in a laptop bios.
I think I need to replace my 4965AGN on my SZ71WN/C as my laptop will loose connectivity with my router for no reason. I get the dreaded unidentified error and the only way to resolve the issue is to reboot my laptop. This was happening even before I upgraded to Win7. Even on a vanialla Win7 install, with no antivirus, it happens. You could ask if it's my router (Netgear DG834GT), but another Vaio SZ that I have works fine....
So has anyone changed their WIFI module and if so, should I upgrade to one which is WIN7 compatiable out of the box?
Just wondering what we use in terms of Power Management, whether its part of the OS or its Dell's Control Point Manager, and whether it affects the fans kicking in or not under comparable settings.
I use an M4400 & an E6400, both have the latest BIOS revisions, and both use Vista's native applet, selected to "Balanced".
I have had my Lenovo U430 touch for about a month now, and have noticed a problem with it. Sometimes when I leave my Lenovo u430 touch alone (with full battery), and sometimes it will just power off without me doing anything. It even happens occasionally when I dont use it for a few minutes while im working in front of it.Â

It is definitely a power-off problem for me, rather than hibernate/sleep as my programs are no longer running when I turn it back on.

Hasnt caused any lasting damage as yet but am worried it could happen while im working on something important.
Using my Ideapad Y410p this morning (six months old), the computer abruptly crashed and shutdown with no warning of any sort. Straight to black screen and lights went out. I thought perhaps it overheated and shutdown as some sort of safety measure, as my old Dell used to do that. The laptop was warm, but I've seen it get hotter and still perform.

Now I can't get power back. Pressing the on/off button doesn't get me any sort of noise or lights. Tried unplugging the battery and AC power for a while, and still not working. Held down power button several times seeing if it would reset something. Opened it up the cover and took a look but didn't see anything wrong. Popped the RAM cards in and out. It's just dead in the water.
