Acer :: 4810tz Screen
Mar 29, 2010
I've got my hands on a Acer 4810tz that needs help and I'm trying to figure out what the cause of my problem is.
When the computer boots up (even in POST), the background of the screen is green, and when loading up into windows, anything that would consist of the color green results in distorted and blurred images. All the other colors appear fine.
I did some troubleshooting, including updating the bios and testing the VGA out connection to an external monitor to confirm its not a motherboard/gpu problem.
I'm wondering if simply the connection to the motherboard and the laptop screen got loose, or could the screen inverter be going bad?
In either case, I would have no problem taking apart the laptop to reseat the cables and put it all back together, but I'm not familiar with Acer's warranty policies. The laptop is still under warranty until August.
I know Dell and HP really don't care (or are too stupid to know) if you disassemble a laptop and put it back together, but I don't know where Acer stands.
It looks rather simple to disassemble, but it appears there is a screw underneath a sticker, which I'm assuming serves as the 'Warranty Void if Removed' sticker.

When I unplug (go to battery power), the green battery-light-led goes on and overrides the brightness-settings I do with Windows 7. This means whenever I plug-in or plug-out the brigthness gets reset to some value that Acer thinks is 'right' for me. I would like to decide myself what is right for me, but can't find out how.
What makes it worse is that at first it works like:
Unplugged: 30% brightness
Plugged-in: 40% brightness
Which is reasonable. However, after pluggin-in/out a few times, it goes all screwy. For example: unplugged becomes 50%, plugged-in becomes 10%, or some other seemingly random non-sense-making values. So, I would like to get rid of this.
Pressing the green led when it's on makes it go off and seems to give brightness-control back to windows-settings. However, as soon as pluggin-in and plugging-out again, the green led comes on again. Argh.
I read some other threads about similar issues, but people would always have Acer ePower Management or something installed. I do not. This happens on a fresh clean install of Windows 7. Bios is up-to-date. Happens in every power mode (saver/balanced/performance).................

I bought the laptop today. When I first plugged it in, the LED turned yellow when charging. From reading another thread I thought it would turn blue when charged and plugged in, yet the light just goes out after a while. Is it broken? Quick guide also says blue light should be on after the battery is charged.
I tried removing the battery, put it back in, plugged the laptop in, blue light came on for a few seconds, then went out again.

When I unplug my laptop from the AC adapter, Acer's ePower system automatically dims the LCD brightness to a setting that is 2 levels above the lowest (and 7 below the highest). However, when resuming the laptop from standby, I noticed that the setting is increased to 4 levels above the lowest (and 5 below the highest). I'm kind of a stickler for these sorts of things and would prefer for Windows not to change the LCD brightness if the ePower manager is supposed to be handling it. Is anyone else noticing this, and if so, have you corrected it somehow?
FYI, I should mention that I recently downloaded an updated version of Acer's ePower management system from Acer's support website - this updated version corrected an error that was occurring where my optical drive wouldn't "wake up" after ePower management shut it down, so I would prefer not to downgrade.
I'm frankly a little confused about where exactly all the Acer-specific power options are located. What is the difference between ePower and PowerSmart? Or are they the same thing? I could go on, but I think I've raised enough questions.

The design looks simply beautiful. The silver lid and the gun metal color inside is awsome. The dark colors inside will help in not causing any strain for your eyes even after working for long time.
The touchpad too has a matte finish, making it easy to use. It is very responsive. The scroll and zoom gestures helps a lot in reducing the effort though am not convinced with the third gesture, would be good if this gesture could be used for something better.
Option to turn off/on the bluetooth and wifi via the buttons/touch buttons is really good, I had trouble with some other laptops trying to find out how to do this.
The option to turnoff the screen helps conserve energy, while listening to music or doing some activity which do not need any human intervention. The screen is bright enough. I keep it at the lowest brightness while working, without any issues...............

My Timeline 4810TZ comes with SU4100 1.3Ghz, 3GB DDR3 RAM, Samsung 400GB HDD. I installed Win 7 32 bit. I'm getting random freeze during normal usage such as browsing, file copying etc. I have tried running Prime95(3 tests), OCCT and Linpack, Memtest86+(DOS) and Windows memory diagnostics. No problem were detected. I reinstalled OS with Win 7 64 bit and still facing the same problem. Occasionaly there will be BSODs. I have installed the latest BIOS with all the latest drivers available.
Is there compatibility problem with Win 7 OS or there is hardware problem with my Timeline?

my 4810tz keeps freezing, i've tried all the fixes on this forum, apart from re-installing windows 7 (I cant see how this can help).
what I need to know is how I can get the minidump file when my laptop locks up?
i've looked at the event log and all it says is event 41 kernal power, i need to find out what application/driver is causing the crashes!
I can't believe this can't be fixed, this is really bad on acers part.
a note to make though, this freezing happened on my gf's laptop, and she was running a core duo, so maybe its the proccessor?

Generally I'm very pleased with the 4810TZ, but recording from the built-in microphone or an external microphone produces very faint recordings (maybe 5-10% of normal volume). I'm using Sound Recorder in Windows 7 64-bit, with latest Windows / Acer driver for the Realtek sound device - have also tried the latest driver from Realtek.com.tw.
I've done all the normal tweaks - turn off all effects, set auto gain control, set input level to maximum, try boosting one mic channel more than other, setting +30 dB boost, etc.
I did get slightly higher recording levels in Skype 4.2, but still not enough to be usable (less than 20%). Even shouting into the mic doesn't get that much playback volume.
I've seen some reports that the 4810TZ's internal mic and sound recording used to work fine on Vista but broke with the Win7 upgrade.
Has anyone out there had success with recording on the 4810TZ, using any non-USB microphone, internal or external? Would really like to hear from people using any Windows version, XP/Vista or 7, just to see if it's possible or a hardware issue.

Friend recently purchased this new laptop, but it's a bit sluggish. i want to do a clean install, but of course there was no Windows Vista DVD provided. How do i create a copy of the Vista installed on this Acer laptop? Does Acer ERecovery spit out a Windows image or does it copy over all the bloat ware as well? Is it hidden in some folder like Lenovos?

I have an Acer 6930ZG with a fresh install of windows 7 RC 32bit. I can play Call Of Duty 4, Counter Strike, Flatout 2 etc. with no problems! But when I try to open MapleStory a blue screen appears, and begin to make a physcial memory dump? . MapleStory is a 2D-game, and Call Of Duty requires much more.
I made a little research, and I found out that alot of people have the same problem, and they said it was caused by a conflict with a program or hardware drivers. I have tried to delete my NVIDIA driver, and install it again. No luck.
And yes, I have also tried to run MapleStory in compatibily mode
As I said: It's only in MapleStory I experience the problem, and I don't think it's ram-failure, since I have seen the same problem on a different computer, and I can play Call of Duty 4.
Here is the system log:
Problemsignatur:
Navn på problemhændelse:BlueScreen
OS-version:6.1.7100.2.0.0.256.1
Landestandard-id:1030.....................

so after about 6 months of not-so-abusive use of my notebook, the LCD screen sort of chickened out on me.. (Maybe me thinking to tear it apart sent it running lol)
What happened was, every so often before the day of failure, my screen would go gray in the bottom half and alright in the upper. Usually this would be fixed by applying very little torsion in the screen i.e. pushing on the left upper part of the screen and pulling on the right.
Not yesterday. When that happened and I made this move, it only became worse, lines started forming in the screen and then the screen went from white to black like paper burning..although moving it wouldn't make it stay that way. Now, I could only see about 1/3 of the upper part of the screen.
Now, I can't immediately claim the warranty of this thing, since it was my dad who bought it at Singapore, and the ITW says that the buyer must make a personal appearance with the necessary documents i.e. passport, reciepts etc. before the laptop could be repaired.
The first impression I got was perhaps the wire connecting the LCD to the mainboard needs to be reattached or something, but my local Acer service center suggests that it might as well be an LCD screen fault altogether.
Now, how would you know if it's your LCD screen and not just wires that went kaput? I was pretty convinced that it might just be the wire, since the method I used to do solved it, but now it doesn't budge...

I've been trying to follow various vague guides on how to replace Acer screens. The closest guide on this forum is for the 6930 but the layout is quite different once you open them up. I have so far removed the speaker cover and detached the screen from the main laptop. I have also un-popped the screen bezel but am now stuck. The proplem is that as far as I can see, I need to get the whole bezel off in order to accesss the LCD fittings but I can't because it's catching on the hinges (and the small circuit board for the AC in socket) which protude from the screen. How do you remove the bezel? It looks like it should slide up away from the hinges but mine is getting caught everytime. What have I missed?

pulled my laptop off the table and now the right side of my screen has little red lines in it. When I flex the screen, the lines go away or the screen flickers. I am typing on it right now, the screen works fine otherwise as long as I dont move it....
When we upgraded my processor I thought the screen was generally pretty easy to replace.
I can get a used one on ebay (the whole screen assembly, NOT just the LCD).

I don't know what happened but now when I tilt my display past a certain point, the screen display gets garbled. It does look like one of the joins at the back has come undone too, probably related. Must be a loose connection.
Best to send it back to Acer? It shipped with a faulty mic connection too to be honest.
What would be the best way of getting it back to Acer? I'm in Ireland I ordered it off laptopsdirect.ie. It's still a few months within warranty as far as I'm aware. I don't want to strain my neck too much so I will need to get it fixed soon enough.

My Aspire M (1.5 years old) was making a horrible noise, so I opened it up to find a very dirty fan. Â I cleaned the fan, but it still made noise. I bought a new fan and installed it. After closing it up and turning it on, it only gets to the ACER screen and then recycles.
Â
I probably inadvertantly corrupted the BIOS, or is it something else? Â Can I flash the BIOS without having a working BIOS?

I uninstalled 2 programs and deleted shared files after the uninstall.
On reeboot of the computer my screen was pixellated and it was hard to read text.
I have tried the following to get the screen back to normal.
System restore
reload uninstalled programs
Installed video drivers
Contacted Acer who told me to put system back to factory defaults, which I did
Nothing has worked so far
I have set my screen size to 1024 * 768 which allows me to read text but the screen still doesn't look right.
I have plugged in an external monitor which there is no problem with.

On my Acer 5920, the screen flickers off and on when I plug up to my projector to give a power point presentation. I have called Acer NO-HELP; they said it was a 3rd party software issue, which was not true, because there is no software- it is plug and play. I called Epson; they suggested to chage the refresh rate to 60 and I did to no avail.
There final word was that it must be the Graphics Card.

I have the same problem as the user in another thread Acer Aspire 6930 screen replacement
but since the layout of 6920 and 6930 are different, I stuck at the part when I have to pull out two video cables beneath speaker cover, cause there is only one cable (that I am aware of) in 6920. So I hope someone could explain to me what to do next after removing speaker cover, cause I don't want to brick my laptop

After a few days of happy 1810T ownership, the computer has begun to have a problem where the screen locks up tight. Nothing revives the computer except holding the power button down to force a powerdown. It reboots OK but shows the screen to optionally boot into Safe Mode.
The screen is a random color when this happens: sometimes green, blue or red. It is NOT the traditional "blue screen of death".
At first I thought it was due to some problems I was having with a conflict between The KM Player and Adobe Flash (as detailed here and here, for example). Luckily I had done Acronis 2010 images at each step of the way in the "new notebook" process:
- image made right out of the box by booting from Acronis disc first, before ever running Win7 on the computer (I call this the "Day 0 Image")
- image made after doing Windows Updates, Windows Security Essentials, installing apps (KM Player, IrfanView, FireFox, etc) and user data
Thinking the problem was due to the KM Player conflicts, I restored the computer back to when there was no KM Player, i.e. out-of-the-box Day 0 Image. This went fine and Acronis worked smoothly.
I did the Windows Updates but did not install any apps or user data... and the screen lockup still happens! Sometimes it happens soon after login, other times things run OK for a while first.
I am really concerned about this. If I can't rely on the computer to not lock up regularly, it is essentially useless to me. I am very surprised to see the problem even after an "out of the box" disk restore.
Any suggestions? Even if you don't have knowledge of how to deal with this problem specifically, do you know where else I can ask? What will Acer's take on this be? I am afraid they will just pass it off as "user error" and leave me stuck...
To Add:
1) I can't remember if this has happened only when on battery, or also when plugged in. I will check and see if it happens in both modes. If it only happens when on battery, at least that shows a path forward.
2) I have not tried to restore via the Acer eRecovery DVDs yet, though I don't know why this would be any better than the Acronis 2010 Day 0 image. I was in the process of burning the first Acer recovery DVD last night when... the screen locked up!
3) I have emailed Acer Support about the problem, though I suspect they won't trust Acronis 2010 and they'll tell me to restore via Acer eRecovery DVD...

I see many touchscreen kits on eBay for the AAO and EEE PCs, and I was wondering how well they worked. It would be pretty awesome to have a touchscreen AAO (especially with the added touchscreen compatibility of Windows 7). So to those who have made the modification: How difficult was it on a scale of 1 to 10?

My poor Acer 1810T Olympic Edition, after I slipped on stairs.
No scratch, thanks to the neoprene case.
Works perfectly except for a beautiful crack on the screen glass.
I'm using an Acer -- replacement LCD for $99 from eBay.
No $500 LCD's (like for the Sony Vaio P series)
And I'm just going to cannibalize my Acer Aspire One 11.6" netbook for now. All Acer-manufactured 11.6's use identical screens (Acer Ferrari One, Gateway 11.6" netbook, Acer
Aspire One 11.6", Acer 1410 series, Acer 1810 series)
