Acer :: 5315 And SATA II Drive And CPU Upgrade
Jun 15, 2009
My setup is as follows:
Acer 5315-201G08Mi
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 550 @ 2.00GHz (Socket P)
TOSHIBA MK8046GSX
Intel GL960 chipset
IO chip being 82801HBM (ICH8-M).
2G DDR2 533 ram
Vista Home Basic
MB - ICL50
I've noticed that the supplied Toshiba SATA II drive is running in SATA I mode and not SATA II even though the controller chip supports SATA II.
Perhaps the BIOS has disabled SATA II?
In addition, I'm keen to upgrade the CPU to a T7300, I assume if I follow the directions on this site, everything should work fine? Any known problems with this model?

I gained a lot of information from the 5315 CPU Upgrade Thread. I'd particularly like to thank BigOzone, Hoggie and Quilty997. There are many others but information from the above formed the basis of my upgrade.
Other information I've collected from other parts in the forum.
The specification of the laptop was as follows.
Acer Aspire 5315
Celeron 550 2.0Ghz (eek)
1gb of Ram
Vista Home Basic (double eek)
Atheros Wireless Card
80Gb Toshiba Hard Disk
The new Specification is.
Core2Duo T7500 2.2Ghz 800 Mhz Front Side Bus 4Mb Cache
3Gb of Crucial Ram
Vista Home Basic (No Choice At the Minute)
Intel 4965 AGN Wireless Card
200Gb Hitachi Hard Disk
The CPU Upgrade I won't actually cover, not necessary when there is a fantastic sticky at the top of this forum. The Upgrade took about 15 minutes, but the actual swap took about 5 minutes or so, I was very anal about cleaning the heatsink and applying AS5. I think the biggest scare was the door unerneath, quite tricky to get off and put back on without damaging the tabs.
My main focus is the hard drive swap, whilst maintaining all the eRecovery software. For this I use Acronis True Image Home, I am aware that the trial can be downloaded or users obtain by other means, can I just say BUY IT as it only cost me £17 from Amazon.co.uk and as usual it was cheaper in the US. The biggest reason for buying is that some features are not available in the trial. I also bought a Laptop SATA External Drive Holder and boy was I glad I did......................

I m thinking to upgrade my 5315 acer aspire too but I read a lot in this forum and around and i m still not 100 percent sure...
So clearly : do all the 5315 are upgradable...?
Acer support website is clear enough not to confused version or model... so why some users report bios flash problem on some 5315?
I m quite excited to upgrade but also anxious of course...
My acer is a Acer Aspire 5315-202G12Mi (by the way what does "202G12Mi" means?)

I've just completed a CPU upgrade on my 5315 (to a T7300, which took 15 minutes!). I'm now thinking of upgrading the memory from my current 2GB @ 667 MHz (with the new CPU the memory runs at 667 MHz rather than 533 MHz with the old CPU) to 2GB @ 800 MHz.
However, I've read that the performance increase between 667 MHz and 800 MHz is very little, thus, it's not worth spending the money, even if it is only $AUD40.
Can anyone provide any input, benchmarks or experiences?

This is my Aspire opened up
This is a close up where you can see that we can paste a MXM socket (230 pin's)
Now, if I paste a MXM soket it would look like this
But...
If I introduce a graphic card into this new port added by "me". Will my software recognice it?
The bios an windows can sopport it?
I know problems about heat (can be solved) but the important thing is the bios recognition and how to disable x3100 default integrated graphics right?

Hoping to upgrade my daughters 5315 from a celeron 530 to a core 2 duo. So many pages about doing this but my main question is which processors will it accept. CPUID says its a mPGA478 socket but not sure about the chipset whether 960 or 965. Already upgraded to latest bios 1.45.

I have a Aispire 5315. I would like to upgrade my bios in DOS to 1.33 before I install a T9300 CPU. The size of the 1.33 bios is 148,000 bytes so I can't put it on a floppy and the zip files is also bigger than 1457664 bytes.
I prefer not to upgrade in Windows although I see many using winflash. Where is this file located.

I connected a dvd drive to my laptop using, a sata to esata cable. my laptop has a ESATA port.
I don't know if you should post some kind of config summary (if yes let me know, I will do it promptly) basically I have a HP DV6t quad edition with an Intel 5 serie chipset,
PM55 express chipset (dont really know if it make any sense but still, I will just say state it) so I installed Intel Matrix Storage and when I connect the drive I can see it, but windows 7 does not see it, it's like I didn't plug anything in. [url] also my bios is almost configurable, I don't know why I can change the time, the date, the admin password, the boot order, virtualization, fan on/off that's pretty much it. so what options do I have if I want to make this dvd drive work?

Been trying to get all my ducks in a row for when my 1510 arrives, DLing drivers and such.
Been reading some old threads/how tos here on doing a fresh install of Windows XP. It was suggested to put the SATA drivers on a bootable flash drive for installation during the Windows install, so you would be in AHCI mode when finished and not have to try to do it later.
Is that the current method of installing the SATA drivers for AHCI?

I am having problems with some Blu-Ray DVDs in my DV9774ca with a optiarc BC-5500A ATA.
When I put some Blu-Ray DVDs in the drive starts to spin and makes the normal searching noises for 30 seconds and then it stops without doing anything at all.
I decided to try download a firmware update, but the site says not to flash SATA drives with PATA firmware.
How can I find out what it is? I can only assume its SATA. The firmware I found is for PATA!
Also I assume that the firmware I already have is older than the downloadable version (not from H.P.). The downloadable version is 1.05 from November/08. I bought my laptop in Feb/08.

I posted earlier a message about my Vostro 1500 which suddenly won't start. I called Dell and a local repair shop, and both indicate it's most likely the motherboard, and will cost anywhere from $300-$500 to fix.
Just not worth it - I'll get me a new lighter laptop instead. However, read where you can get a hard drive case to get the data off the hard drive and to use as a backup drive

I was checking my hard drive with hdtune and saw something interesting...the program said that my hard drive is SATA I. Am I mistaken or is this for real? I have a CTO VGN-FW490J, got it in June 2009. The hard drive is a Fujitsu MHZ2320BJ. I did a quick google and the descriptions say it is SATA II, so I'm confused. Is it the motherboard that determines the SATA speeds or the hard drive? What's even more confusing is that in the official FW thread, someone said they installed a SSD and they're getting sequential reads at about 250mb/sec so that person definitely is in the SATA II range. I attached an image of the part that shows my hard drive info.

How do I tell what type of hard drive I have in my Inspiron 1520? I am pretty sure it's IDE/ATA, but I am seeing info in my web research that says SATA. Not sure which to buy. Maybe this is a dumb question.

got a inspiron 1545 recently with a SATA 320 gb HDD / 4gb ram with Windows Vista Home Basic. Like most of us I hate Vista. So I created a partition & installed XP.
Used a program "EasyBCD" to setup dual boot. I get the dual boot screen at startup. But only XP boots. After a little probing, came to know that there are only 2 options in the BIOS for SATA operations. AHCI & ATA. If I select ATA I can boot only to XP. If I select AHCI then I can boot only into Vista. Searched around but the solutions were a bit over my head. Really appreciate if anybody could come up with something in lay mans terms.

i recently bought a vantex nexstar 3 external hard drive with the option of usb and e-sata. The problem i am having is with e-sata. The e-sata is the prefered method of exchanging information dur to its speed rather than usb.
I would like to know from the community in large if there is anyone who has experienced these problems or has connected an external to their m4400 laptop.
The external laptop has a seagate 7200 rpm FFS(free fall sensor) inside.
The problems:
1) When connecting the exHD to the laptop for the first time the HD spins (i can feel it) but then stops. Windows does not pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager. Only when i restart the laptop still with the exHD connect does windows pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager.
I did in both cases check to see if the exHD needs more power and it is sufficient.
2)Another issue is that i have windows reporting to me that an external hard drive has been connect to my system even though i havn't plugged it in .....

I purchased SATA 7200 RPM hard drive from newegg.com
[url]
My notebook is the brand-new Inspiron 1720 which only supports SATA.
The problem is that the hard drive didn't come with a "connector" (or "gender changer" or whatever... I don't what's this thing called).
So, I am unable to connect the hard drive to my notebook. I contacted newegg.com and they said it doesn't come with the connector.
Anyone know where I can get this connector?
I tried googling like "SATA connector 2.5-inch drive", but I cannot find any information.... Also, what's this thing called exactly?

I'm looking at upgrading my 8204 with a larger HDD as it possibly is on its way out after nearly 4 years of constant use. If I am going to reformat may as well increase the space somwhat.
I see some people (in old threads) have gone to a 320GB 7200rpm SATAII drive rather than the 100GB 5400rpm SATA I drive in there at the moment.
I was wondering what is the largest drive the system will support and if any one has any recommendations? I have looked at Seagate 500GB drives but not sure what depth the existing drive is as notice there can be variances.

I have been trying to find info on the largest capacity drive I can fit to my Acer 3630 note book, (current size 60 GB)
I believe there may be issues with the Bios set up for larger drives.
I have found Western Digital scorpio ATA100 Drives both 250 and 320GB that will fit in the drive space and I am running a Phoenix NoteBios 4.0 release 6.0 and the Bios date is 20/03/06.
any experience of changing the drive on this model?
