Acer :: 6920g Laptop Down Throttling When Gaming
Jun 3, 2009
I am experiencing a problem with my 6920g laptop throttling down when playing games when the heat increases eg. GTA IV.
I've already tried just using RM-Clock Utility and setting it for max performance but yet it still clocks down with heat increase.
I’ve seen an excellent guide on here for lowering the voltage of my laptop so would this help with gaming (as well as the general running of the laptop)

I've had the Acer 6920G for quite some time, I realized I should put a stop to throttling/downclocking.
I tried the several ways which came from this site, especially from flipfire and DarkSilver. I already undervolted my cpu, but after I played L4D2 for about 10 mins it started to throttle again. And the post which DarkSilver made was to go to regedit and change some settings in the RightMark CPU Utility, I've done that yet it still throttled.
I also attempted to go to BIOS and check if I could disable EIST, but there was no option. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this? I've updated my drivers and everything, and I also upgraded to Windwos 7 - but it still stays the same way.

i've sent my computer for repair because it doesnt shutdown properly. it turns out the something is wrong with the board and they have to replace it. the service center is going to order a new board from acer. do you think with the replacement of the new board the throttling problems on 6920g will disapppear?

Here's the bullet points:I was only able to get the machine to throttle ONCE in front of them. I'm absolutely stumped why my 6920G behaved so well (do they have Acer-be-good signals on their property? ), but I think it may have something to do with my resetting of the GPU back to stock clocks. I'm going to keep it there and see. That being said, they at least know that the system does throttle at a lower temperature than it should.
They suspect it's a motherboard, fan, or BIOS issue, but couldn't hammer it down without taking my system for more time than I had.I was not able to get a stock 6920G to throttle AT ALL. They brought out a model with a T5750 Core 2 Duo and BIOS v1.06, and using ORTHOS I was able to get it to and above 60 degrees without a single stutter or throttle. This may denote that the problem is not as systematic as we originally imagined, or that the demo system was the exception. In any case, they'll happily take my system and fix it up properly whenever I don't need it anymore. (of course, I will need to slide the original CPU back in) So, what does that mean for those of us who do throttle every now and again?
Unfortunately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all fix. Since the problem occurs across CPUs and BIOSes, it's up to YOU, the user, to find a solution that works. And what works for you may not work for everyone else.

My notebook has worked fine until about half a year ago when the CPU is overheating from doing little tasks such as skyping and having the internet open. So I read up on the topic and ended up here. I have rmclock installed and adjusted it a bit but no real effect. I also don't want to mess up my laptop by frying it.
For the Aspire 6920G with Intel T5750 @ 2GHz what do I have to set my FID and VID at?
other question:
Would you recommend upgrading my CPU or is the current one sufficient? (I use it for occasional gaming (Empire total war) and multimedia applications such as photo-shop)
If so what other components would I have to change?
Would it increase the performance of my laptop?

I'm having problems playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 lately. When i first got the computer, it ran fine on high graphics settings and the highest resolution (1280x720).
But in the past month or so it's started lagging all the time. It starts off fine but after after a few minutes it suddenly jumps and from then on it never recovers and just lags ridiculously and becomes unplayable, also load times for replays and sometimes menu changes can take up to a minute where normally it would only take a second.
I assumed it was a heating problem, so i opened it up and cleaned the fan and grills out and now have the laptop on a raised platform to allow better flow of air underneath it, it didn't change it at all.
Also got the new Ghostbusters game and the same thing happens with that, it's pretty much unplayable from the start now.

settings I should be using for gaming. Currently i'm using the default settings. It seems to run spore perfectly fine no lag/choppy game play (offline) a little online though and the graphics are smooth and sharp. When I play nhl 09 the gameplay is very erratic and choppy and the graphics are terrible, they start off decent and then just digress completely to box like looking players as if it were played on something a bit better then the n64. I checked the system requirements for nhl 09 the 6920g meets the requirements I even have 4gig ram not 3. Is it something to do with my settings or is the 6920g just not good enough to play it? Would I be better off returning it and try to exchange it for 08 see if that runs better, although ultimately i'd like to keep 09 if possible.
Some notes about my computer:
Not much is installed on it games/ software wise, I only have spore, nhl 09 and nba 2k9 installed, office ultimate 07, and then antivirus software and what ever came with the computer, plus the usual media players, IM, etc. I have 92 gigs free on my first partition, where it is installed. on the other partition is where i keep all my media.

Im having a small gaming problem here. Im playing world of warcraft on my Aspire 6920g and it works perfectly smooth for like 5 minutes then starts performance decrease until its very bad. If I minimalize the game, for like, one minute and then maximize it back, it works perfectly smooth for some time again. I have no idea how to fix it. It probably isnt overheating as it occurs after I launch my lappy and then the game(the laptop is cold).

My Aspire V3-771 is a little over a year old now. I don't know much about computers, but i do enjoy several pc games, and watch a lot of streaming videos. when doing so my computer almost always shuts itself off, even while running games that could hardly be called graphic intensive. I'd thought it might be an overheating issue? but i don't think that's the case.Â
I've also noticed that, within the task manager, the disk will often jump to 100%.
Â
Again, for months after i bought the machine, it worked perfectly fine. many of the programs that it used to run, now cause it to shut down without warning.Â

I have ordered an Acer Gemstone Blue 6920g which is due to be delivered next week sometime.
I was wondering if anyone else already owns one of the gemstone blue laptops and has tried a laptop bag or case out for it.
The gemstone blue laptops come in a 16 inch and 18.4 inch screen size and have an aspect ratio of 16:9 instead of 16:10.

Ive had my E1705 for over a year . I was very satisfied with it`s performance . It was handling all my applications without any problems . Now it broke and i will be getting a new laptop soon .
I am not a hardcore gamer but i realy like and enjoy some games . I expect games to run on max settings to enjoy them . So far ive had just a few . My newest games r Doom3 ( D3:RoE ) , BF2 , BF2142 . Also i play wow wich runs flawlessly on my E1705 .
Now we have several great games coming in the end of the year . I dont think my laptop would handle them since i see that people with M1710s are experiencing problems .
Thus i have a choice between 3 brands on gaming laptops . My budget is around 3000$ .
Here are 3 models ive been looking at .....

Like many of you, i to had this throttling problem that occurs after couple minutes of play.
I read threads that describe how to fix this using RMClock and undervolting CPU, but i decided to try find some simpler and safer solution. I found this option that slows down processor before increasing fan speed. After i turned it off, i didnt experience any more performance drops.
Heres where you can find it:
-first go to Power options on control panel
-select Change plan settings for High Performance
-click Change advanced power settings
-scroll down to Processor power management and expand
-expand system cooling policy
-change value to Passive like shown in picture:
Im not sure that this will work for anyone, or that i had real throttling problem, but this really helped me. Before i could play up to 20-30 min maximum before my laptop performance started to drop and games started lagging. I tested this solution on dirt2 for 2 days and so far i didnt experience any performance drop, yay
You can see my specs in my signature.

Can it still play all the new games and the games that will come out in the next few years at a good resolution and framerate? What about 3d?
Also, this might be a stupid question, but hey, you never know until you ask: the XPS16 excels as a "media" laptop, what does that exactly mean?
Also, XPS has the best available screen on a laptop currently right? If so, doesn't/should that help it out in the gaming category?
Finally, I am considering the XPS16, or the Macbook Pro 17'. Which has better display and can someone list the pros and cons of each?

I restarted laptop (M1710) and when Windows XP is loading there are green vertical lines on the screen. Even more worringly the screen after the windows logo (login screen) is completely white but with some black sortof distortion.
This looks to me like my graphics card is going **** up? (7900GTX Go)
I get the same problem if i switch to integrated graphics (from setup).....

So recently my laptop started randomly shutting off while I was gaming, I assumed it was the graphics card so I tried to use the intel hd graphics and disable the amd hd graphics to see if that would solve the issue, however it still happened. One thing I noticed is that now when I disable that graphics card the resolution is odd and the letters won't be as clear, I'm guessing this means it may be a motherboard issue.I moved on to thinking it was overheating due a fan problem, I bought a new thermal module for it and the same thing still happens.
I did the reset procedure (removed the battery and ac, pressed the power button for 60secs) and it still happened. I tried with a new battery and charger, same still happens.Lately it doesn't happen just while gaming, it will randomly shut down and once it does, sometimes it will shut down again and again before it even boots up, after a while it may boot up or may shut down again. It's really random and I cannot find a pattern....

I own a dell xps 15 l502x with an i7-2630 processor,6 gb ram and a nvidia gt540m 2gb graphics card.My laptop crashes/freezes very frequently while playing games like modern warfare 3 ,max payne 3,ghost recon future soldier etc.I have to force shut down as i cannot end the process from tash manager even by using programs like killprocess. If i shut down normally with the process still running the light on the power button stays on till i hold it down and power off manually. All my drivers are up to date and i don't overclock my graphics card and run all games on optimal settings.I've read that reports like this are not uncommon with this laptop.

I experience stutter and frame rate drop after about 40 minutes of gaming. Something is triggering Nvidia Powermizer to slow down my GPU. After the GPU drops in performance it stays there unless I restart my computer. this is not related to cpu downclocking because i'm running throttlesop. more info in my sig.

I recently bought an Acer VN7-591g laptop. When the laptop is idling in windows the CPU is around 51°C. When I start CSGO I get temperatures up to 98°C. When it reaches such high temperatures, it throttles down to the lowest possible multiplyer (x8) and the FPS goes down drastically. The temperature almost instantly goes down to around 68°C and then starts to increaste very fast as the CPU goes up in terms of multipliers. It's needless to say that the FPS varies a lot and makes the game annoying to play.
Â
Is this normal? I've read that this laptop shouldn't have problems with throttling. And the temperatures close to 100°C on a regular basis is something I'm not confident with. What are the expected temperatures? I really want to get a stable and good gaming performance out of this laptop.

Brand new laptop idles at 55° C, but at least the fans are quiet.  Casual web browsing, listening to music, and/or downloading files and cpu temp rises to mid 70° C and the fan starts humming pretty noticeably.  If I try to do any gaming, PC hits 85°+ C, fans go crazy,  and the laptop starts beeping.  I really like this laptop, but I need it to be able to handle my day to day activities.

The Definitive Guide to Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue Throttling Issues v2.0
Credit Due to DarkSilver, ATG, Sgogeta4, and Unclewebb
This thread is specifically designed to put an end to the multitude of threads about people asking why their Aspire 6920G, 6930G, 6935G, 8920G, or 8930G is experiencing lackluster performance in gaming.
What Causes It
We’re not 100% certain, but through a process of elimination, we believe there are two possible causes:
•That a sensor on the motherboard is going haywire, reading internal temperatures entirely wrong. As a result, the system’s BIOS believes the CPU’s temperature is reaching dangerous levels when it’s really well within operating limits, and causes a thermal throttle to be activated. This halves the CPU’s performance until the temperatures are returned to what the system perceives as safe levels.
•It could also be potentially linked to a ridiculously low setting in the BIOS and not the fault of a motherboard sensor – this was refuted by my travel to Acer’s Canadian headquarters, where a stock 6920G was shown to operate just fine, with no throttling whatsoever. That being said, given the large number of users affected, it's still a possibility.....................

I bought Acer 7745G with HD5850, 4GB DDR3 and i430M. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. During playing with cod2, wow and grid it stops for some second. Just the game freeze, mouse still work and i can hit alt+tab and go to the desk. I checked it, at this moment the HDD works 100% for that time. After that the game runs perfectly.
I updated my drivers, installed new Windows 7 and there is only DX9c.

I purchase an acer laptop 2 years ago for gaming. The specs are Intel Core duo 1.83ghz, ATi Mobility Radeon X1600 Video memory 256MB, 512 RAM (which I upgrade to 2GB).
I am experiencing auto shutdowns when playing game such as Tomb Raider anniversary and Drift city. Is there any solution to this? The fan is working well. And I get hot temperatures reading from Speedfan, cpu temp at 85 when gaming!
Will resetting the bios fix this? Are there side-effects to that?

I have bought my Acer 8930 and I'm happy.... Or... I'm actually a little sad, because I thought it could run CoD5!!
I can run Call Of Duty 5 smooth in 5 minutes, but then it begins to slow down for some reason. I have tried different graphic-settings and Resouloution with no luck. I have heard in some other threads that Vista 64-bit would help?
I run with these specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)
Intel Core Duo Processor P8600
18.4 Full HD screen
NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT TURBOCACHE
4GB DDR3
640GB HDD
Blue-ray
And much more . . .
In the Acer Power-Management I have set it to High Performance, and Maximum CPU and Graphics Settings. I have also set the NVIDIA graphics driver to Performance.
I have also tried to set it on balanced.
It lags most of the games that I play. (Left 4 Dead, CoD5, GRID etc.)
