Acer :: TravelMate 2420 Overheating
Jun 23, 2009I bought a used Acer TravelMate 2420 laptop (WinXP, RAM 1 GM, hard disk 40 GB, Intel Celeron M processor 1,50 GHZ) and since the beginning it had overheating problems and also some issues with power management. And yes, I know it was a stupid thing to buy it, but knowing it doesn't help.
Now the problems:
1. Whatever I do, it keeps overheating, even if no programs are opened. The laptop's fan works very vaguely, and I can hardly hear any sound of it. At first it didn't trouble me much, as it was winter and it would still work, although heated up. I also bought an USB ventilation pad (2 fans), and it helped for some time. But now, when the air temperature is over 30 degrees (in the room), the laptop just "freezes" in the middle of work and stays like this for about 20 min, or just suddenly shuts down completely.
2. I can't turn it off if the power supply is on - I have to unplug it just before the computer shuts down, otherwise it keeps on restarting. Also I can't use it without a battery, as it doesn't turn off in any way (even pressing the power button for a long time doesn't help), and I have to unplug power supply (which ain't no good for computer).
What I already tried to do:
1. Re-installed Windows, installed updates.
2. Checked the computer with various antivirus and antimalware programs (Avira, AVG-free, Malwarebytes' Anti-malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware).
3. Installed additional Acer utilities: Acer emPowering Framework, Acer ePerformance Management, Acer ePower Management - but they basically didn't let me change anything important (like the fan speed, for example). With PowerManager I changed the CPU speed to Medium, well, it helped a little bit, but the comp. is totally slow now (and still overheats) ... if I set the speed to High, it just turns off after about 10 minutes.
4. Instaled SpeedFan to speed up the fan - but it didn't detect any fan in the computer!
5. Dismantled the laptop (removed the hard disk, the keyboard) to see if the fan isn't clogged, but I still couldn't reach it. So I just used a vacuum-cleaner as much as I could reach, but of course it didn't change anything.
6. Oh and of course I disabled all the unnecessary programmes (by modifying msconfig -> startup).
7. Ran HDD diagnostics, S.M.A.R.T. report showed no problems.
I've read quite a lot now about these laptops, and seems like they all have this overheating problem, but it's usually solved by using a ventilating pad (which helped in my case a bit, but basically didn't solve the problem). I didn't found anybody having these power problems, so I guess maybe a previous user made some stupid modifications... I just don't know how to fix them now.

Sep 8, 2008My daughter bought an Acer Travelmate 2420 (2428a) 2 years ago. Within a year we had to return it, due to heat problems. (It kept shutting down) The vendor told us that they had to clean the fan and the cooler... Now, a year later the problem is back... A strange thing is that the fan doesnt speed up at all.. it has never done it in fact,(It allways runs quiet) no matter how warm the notebook get... It just shuts down and we have to wait 10-15 mn before we can reboot the notebook... I installed SpeedFan, just to see if I could adjust the fan, but it just doesnt appear... I can read the temperature (71 on start, thats a lot for a Centrino...) the speed and the CPU charge... And thats it.The bios is up to date (Ver. 1.06)

I found all the drivers that I needed except my wireless doesnt work. I have downloaded every different wireless driver from the acer site and nothing works. OH, my sister lost the Recovery Disc for this computer as well. When i go to my device manager, there is yellow "?" beside the following"

Mar 5, 2015I have, a.o., a TravelMate2420. Can I let it boot up and/or close down on specific times? It's one of my Acers, the oldest, and I want to use it for monitoring my sunpanels.
That program will start up after boot and close down while closing down the system. The program uses COMports and for datasavings harddiskspace AND a part of the machines memory, so it has to shut down regularly before the machines' memo is full. And then start up clean and so on. Aprox a week of data will do, so a weekly restart of the system would be needed.
If timer doesn't work I can use the local network option. But how?

Apr 23, 2009ACER Travelmate 2420 fails to see operating system and will not restore from disc.
My Acer Travelmate 2420 now fails to see the operating system. When I use the restore DVD that I had made it boots up and after a while the recovery runs. I hit a problem when the machine asks for disc 2 to continue the recovery. Only one disc was ever made during the back up session.
A few facts.
Before the OS failed Acer Recovery and other Acer Programs had started to not function.
The C: and D: drives where NTFS Formatted.
I have even considered cleaning the hard drive altogether and installing a new OS. The problem here is that I can't get into DOS Mode.
Acer :: 2420 Notebook - Starts Slowing Down Again
Nov 25, 2008I've been experiencing kind of a problem with my Acer 2420 laptop. When I start up its usually pretty fast, but eventually it begins to slow down to the point where I have to restart the system completely. I have it running Windows Vista Home Edition at 512MB of ram, 1.5Ghz.
Its really weird because sometimes when I unplug the charger it works again but after I plug it back in, like 10 minutes later it starts slowing down again. I can't figure it out.
Acer :: 5920 Screen Flicker
Mar 7, 2009On my Acer 5920, the screen flickers off and on when I plug up to my projector to give a power point presentation. I have called Acer NO-HELP; they said it was a 3rd party software issue, which was not true, because there is no software- it is plug and play. I called Epson; they suggested to chage the refresh rate to 60 and I did to no avail.
There final word was that it must be the Graphics Card.
Acer :: 1410 Screen Flicker
Dec 18, 2009I found a couple other reviews where people said they had a noticeable (more so on dimmer settings, for me) screen flicker with their timelines. I have the 1410 with su2300 proc. Anyone else noticing this problem? It's enough to distract me, which can be annoying, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the visuals.

Apr 26, 2010I've been plagued with this problem for the past month and a half at least, so much so that the laptop has spent the last 3 weeks with Acer and their technical support team in Plymouth (I only got it back last week).
The laptop was sent off with a fault to the screen. It intermittently flickers, mainly when the screen is moved, but sometimes not. The laptop was sent off to Acer 3-4 weeks ago and was returned last week. A report was returned with the laptop and reads as follows:

As you can imagine, this report left me completely perplexed but I assumed that somewhere within that they had fixed the screen problem and left me with a fully functional laptop again. And of course I'd been without it for 3 weeks and just wanted to turn it on again!! lol (On a sidenote, I had asked them to check the disk drive also, because back when I first got it, it struggled to read any type of disk. This explains the apparent replacement disk drive)................

Oct 17, 2008I have an Acer Aspire and it's been good to me mostly; however, I have an issue that I was wondering if anyone could help me with. My screen will flicker occasionally and it has only gotten worse. Sometimes changing the angle of the screen stops it, other times plugging it in stops it but sometimes neither work.

Jan 1, 2010I just bought an Acer Timeline 1810TZ a few days ago. I'm having problems with video flickering when I play .avi files and every other file format in VLC media player, I tried a few other players and it's the same issue. I'm pretty sure it's the video drivers I'm using but I don't know how to fix it. I did a clean install of Windows 7 ultimate the day I got it. The image and audio speed is fine on the screen but there's flickering lines across the screen when the camera moves around.
it's not fun watching flickering movies.

Jun 14, 2008I have an Acer 5672. It has the media keys on the left side of the keyboard where i can control the volume, stop, pause etc. I reformatted my machine and reinstalled XP Pro. When i use the media keys there is no display on the screen of what i am doing. Acer :: Upgrade To Windows 7 Volume Changes But Screen Goes
Jan 8, 2010I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and everything seems fine, apart from a couple of minor things. When I had the original Vista installation when I pressed the mute button on my media control panel it lit up blue, since the upgrade the light doesn't respond.
Also when I turn on the volume on the media control panel the volume changes but I no longer get the graphic on the screen telling me what number its at.
Acer :: Aspire 7730 Subwoofer Volume
Aug 8, 2009I've got an Aspire 7730 which is about a month old. Everything is working fine except the subwoofer seems to be very weak. You need to put your ear up against it to hear anything at all so it's more or less useless as is. My brother's 5920 has a very good subwoofer and the sound output is excellent from it.
Would anyone know if this is normal for the 7730 or do I have a faulty subwoofer?

Jan 9, 2009I just got my Aspire 6930G yesterday and noticed something which may be a problem. Above the keyboard there is a row of blue lights and buttons for multimedia controls like volume, play, etc. The buttons light up and work fine. My question is on the volume section.
It looks like this:

The minus button turns down the volume and the plus button raises the volume. The vertical bars in the middle look like they are supposed to light up to indicate the volume level, but they do not light up. Does anyone know if they are just for decoration or if they are actually supposed to work? If they are supposed to light up, is it possible this is controlled by a setting someplace? I looked in the likely places (Keyboard, Sounds, etc.) but didn't find anything.
Everything else with the volume works fine: the controls make it louder and softer, I see the on-screen display of the volume when I press the +/- buttons, etc.

Acer :: 6935g - Is My Volume Control Working Correctly
Jan 21, 2009Is my volume control working correctly? The touch thing at the left. It changes the volume in blocks of 2, but even 2 blocks is quite loud and very difficult to set it at 2 blocks in the first place. Normally it goes to 4 blocks then 0 volume and takes time to set it at 2. Having to set the volume using the bottom right icon atm.
Is there anyway to get it more accurate and have a better range of volumes in the lower levels?. I did uninstall a lot of the junk programs that came with it but not launch manager
