I have an Acer travelmate 2420, that I want to factory format but I can't get the back up cd's that I made to work and the Empowerment technology is no longer on the pc how can I factory format now?

I bought a used Acer TravelMate 2420 laptop (WinXP, RAM 1 GM, hard disk 40 GB, Intel Celeron M processor 1,50 GHZ) and since the beginning it had overheating problems and also some issues with power management. And yes, I know it was a stupid thing to buy it, but knowing it doesn't help.
Now the problems:
1. Whatever I do, it keeps overheating, even if no programs are opened. The laptop's fan works very vaguely, and I can hardly hear any sound of it. At first it didn't trouble me much, as it was winter and it would still work, although heated up. I also bought an USB ventilation pad (2 fans), and it helped for some time. But now, when the air temperature is over 30 degrees (in the room), the laptop just "freezes" in the middle of work and stays like this for about 20 min, or just suddenly shuts down completely.
2. I can't turn it off if the power supply is on - I have to unplug it just before the computer shuts down, otherwise it keeps on restarting. Also I can't use it without a battery, as it doesn't turn off in any way (even pressing the power button for a long time doesn't help), and I have to unplug power supply (which ain't no good for computer).
What I already tried to do:
1. Re-installed Windows, installed updates.
2. Checked the computer with various antivirus and antimalware programs (Avira, AVG-free, Malwarebytes' Anti-malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware).
3. Installed additional Acer utilities: Acer emPowering Framework, Acer ePerformance Management, Acer ePower Management - but they basically didn't let me change anything important (like the fan speed, for example). With PowerManager I changed the CPU speed to Medium, well, it helped a little bit, but the comp. is totally slow now (and still overheats) ... if I set the speed to High, it just turns off after about 10 minutes.
4. Instaled SpeedFan to speed up the fan - but it didn't detect any fan in the computer!
5. Dismantled the laptop (removed the hard disk, the keyboard) to see if the fan isn't clogged, but I still couldn't reach it. So I just used a vacuum-cleaner as much as I could reach, but of course it didn't change anything.
6. Oh and of course I disabled all the unnecessary programmes (by modifying msconfig -> startup).
7. Ran HDD diagnostics, S.M.A.R.T. report showed no problems.
I've read quite a lot now about these laptops, and seems like they all have this overheating problem, but it's usually solved by using a ventilating pad (which helped in my case a bit, but basically didn't solve the problem). I didn't found anybody having these power problems, so I guess maybe a previous user made some stupid modifications... I just don't know how to fix them now.
My daughter bought an Acer Travelmate 2420 (2428a) 2 years ago. Within a year we had to return it, due to heat problems. (It kept shutting down) The vendor told us that they had to clean the fan and the cooler... Now, a year later the problem is back... A strange thing is that the fan doesnt speed up at all.. it has never done it in fact,(It allways runs quiet) no matter how warm the notebook get... It just shuts down and we have to wait 10-15 mn before we can reboot the notebook... I installed SpeedFan, just to see if I could adjust the fan, but it just doesnt appear... I can read the temperature (71 on start, thats a lot for a Centrino...) the speed and the CPU charge... And thats it.The bios is up to date (Ver. 1.06)

I found all the drivers that I needed except my wireless doesnt work. I have downloaded every different wireless driver from the acer site and nothing works. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have, a.o., a TravelMate2420. Can I let it boot up and/or close down on specific times? It's one of my Acers, the oldest, and I want to use it for monitoring my sunpanels.
That program will start up after boot and close down while closing down the system. The program uses COMports and for datasavings harddiskspace AND a part of the machines memory, so it has to shut down regularly before the machines' memo is full. And then start up clean and so on. Aprox a week of data will do, so a weekly restart of the system would be needed.
If timer doesn't work I can use the local network option. But how?
ACER Travelmate 2420 fails to see operating system and will not restore from disc.
My Acer Travelmate 2420 now fails to see the operating system. When I use the restore DVD that I had made it boots up and after a while the recovery runs. I hit a problem when the machine asks for disc 2 to continue the recovery. Only one disc was ever made during the back up session.
A few facts.
Before the OS failed Acer Recovery and other Acer Programs had started to not function.
The C: and D: drives where NTFS Formatted.
I have even considered cleaning the hard drive altogether and installing a new OS. The problem here is that I can't get into DOS Mode.
I just did a 'restore to factory default' on my Acer Travelmate 5720-6754 laptop by pressing ALT+F10 during the bootup to get to the eRecovery and restored the computer to factory default.
There is a partition that is 30gb + 30gb which makes both pretty darn small. Is there a way I can merge these two hard drives? My only fear is that there are a bunch of folders on the secondary (acerdata d drive with names like 80bbadfe5760 and in these folders are stuff like amd64, malicious software removal from microsoft, and even a hidden folder called msdownld.tmp.
Also, from what I understand the eRecovery files themselves are on a hidden partition...is that 'hidden partition' this 'acerdata' drive? If i somehow remove the partition, where do the files on this second drive go? If i perform an eRecovery again, will it reform the partition, or will it not even be able to perform a recovery due to the missing files?
About a week ago, some serious problems happened to my TravelMate 3280 to the point that booting in safe mode doesn't even work. I couldn't access the eRecovery Management either and didn't any recovery DVD.
So finally, I reinstalled windows XP SP3 from scratch. As a result, the computer didn't have Acer eRecovery Management installed. I still prefer the original factory settings though. So I browsed around online forums and found a thread by Pupples at Install Factory default, eRecovery
I did what Pupples suggested, managed to restore the alt+F10 function, and entered the Acer Recovery Management during start-up. Then, I chose the Restore Factory Settings option.
The restoration process began smoothly until about 50-60% progress when an error message occured. It says:
Fails in creating or opening a file
C:preload.tag
D:preload.tag
X:preload.tag
After those messages, the computer booted again from the beginning and then entered a black screen with a writing on the top of the screen. The writing:
NTLDR is missing. Press any key to continue.
I pressed any key, but the same NTLDR message kept on re-appearing.
Does this have anything to do with the FAT32 or NTFSthing?
Are there any ways to restore my TravelMate 3280's factory settings?
I've been experiencing kind of a problem with my Acer 2420 laptop. When I start up its usually pretty fast, but eventually it begins to slow down to the point where I have to restart the system completely. I have it running Windows Vista Home Edition at 512MB of ram, 1.5Ghz.
Its really weird because sometimes when I unplug the charger it works again but after I plug it back in, like 10 minutes later it starts slowing down again. I can't figure it out.
i just bought a new laptop acer aspire 2920 and using a windows XP.. I received a CD write "acer aspire 2920 RECOVERY" after i bought the laptop.. i dont know what does the cd for.. and now on, i wan to format the laptop but i scare if i lost some important data or LICENSE install on my laptop... and the CD i received was scared me to format it... could u pls reply me as soon as possible? what does the cd for?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been given an Acer 6930G by a family member to setup. After realising there's 0 discs included with the laptop, the Acer pop up message tells me I have to make my own factory default image. I have successfully made it on 2 DVDs, my question is now in the manual there is nothing about how to use it, I was wondering if anyone can share any insight to me as to how it works.
Basically I know it is probably a bootable DVD as the root of the DVD suggests (several "BOOT" files) I was wondering how it actually looks like? I haven't tested it yet as the user was extremely desperate to get it running so I had to give it up the moment the DVDs were made.
If I put the DVD in and select to boot from it at start up (before getting into windows) does it take me to some sort of custom screen where I can SELECT that I want to reformat and restore the laptop? I want to know what options I am given and I can only assume that it's the same for most laptops.
And I can only assume again, that if I factory restore it, it will come back with Vista activated and all the initial bloatware again, along with all the drivers for it (so I don't need to go track them down).
This is all I need to know, I wish I can test it but I can't even get the laptop back now (until it breaks ...)
If someone can post their experiences with it I will be grateful, this is just more for reassurance than anything, and confirm my assumptions? Many thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have discovered that I can launch that recovery app by pushing ALT+F10, I have managed to wrangle the laptop temporarily to test and have discovered that I can choose from 2 back up options, but I dare not go any further, can someone tell me the next steps? One says factory default, and the other is user's backup.
I can guess that if I choose the first option, factory default, it'll ask for the DVDs I have created? And the 2nd option will restore a backup I made selecting the user option on the recovery app.
I own a 5920G. Recently, after formatting my hard disk, I discovered my recovery discs are damaged and I accidentally wiped out my hard disk recovery partition some time ago while installing linux. I managed to copy both the recovery DVDs into my hard disk (not completely), and managed to download some missing drivers & patches from acer & microsoft which were unrecoverable from the discs. The only missing file now is an Image file from Disc2 named D5E0A592.132 (around 50MB). It is the last recovery image in disc2, in a folder named 'Images'. I don't want to take it to Acer service etc because i need to use my notebook a lot, and because my warranty peroid is over.
to upload this single file (D5E0A592.132), preferably to any file hosting service? (eg rapidshare etc). I have been searching online for this file for days.

I don't think this is illegal, because I'm not pirating any disc or requesting any pirate disc. I do own a legal copy of Windows Vista which came with the notebook.
I just formatted my computer, and reinstalled vista on my extensa 5620z(5620-4025) i never created a recovery disk and im not sure which drivers to install on it again,

Everything seemed to go fine, until I noticed in the disc manager that the Hard Disc has 3 partitions... one is like 3GB, and the other 2 are about 27GB each... One is the Main C: Drive, and the other is called "Acer Data". This is driving me nuts! She only has 27GB of usable storage on her computer, and I can't figure out how to consolidate the 2 Partitions to make 1 large one. Can anyone please help? It's a 60GB harddrive, and I'd hate to see that go to waste for "Acer data" (whatever that is).
Also, the disc was formatted in FAT32... Is there any reason Acer chooses that file system over NTFS? I'd prefer to format the drive with NTFS... I'm just concerned that if I reformat the drive I'll lose all the drivers and stuff. The computer currently doesn't have any programs installed or any data that needs backing up, so I'm not concerned about that stuff.

Device manager is showing Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi miniport adapter (although with XP it simply showed by the name of WLAN adapter as far as I remember). And checking it's properties it says that the device is working properly. When Intel Wi-Fi Technology is tried to get started, it says that 'A supported intel wireless network adapter not found'.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought a 500gb Western Digital HDD for my 17" mbp. I tried to run boot camp yesterday and I keep getting this message "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
So I back up what files I need to keep. I open up my disk utility and I cannot erase, or partition in there. It simply won't work at this point I just need to reformat and make the Volume Mac OSX (Journaled) cause right now its just volume. Like I said I've backed up what I feel I need to keep cause I have my original HDD. First off, I just cloned the original drive using super and SATA to USB cable.
Wife and I picked up a Dell Studio 15 tonight, so we FINALLY have a laptop in the house. The catch is, it's in the box till the 24th. So, I've seen the sticker on the box that says there's a free evaluation copy of Norton something or other installed on there, and that's enough to make me want to format the thing as soon as it powers on for the first time..
My question is, whats on that restore disk? I think that was already answered here, that it's the same old crap that's already on the machine, but I'm wondering about the file structure. Is it Vista in one folder and all the crap in others, or is it just like an image so there's no way to install just Vista?
Second, I have Vista Business, so I could just use it, but the Studio comes with Home Premium. Assuming there's no 'just Vista Home' install option, is there at least a key in the box or somewhere in the registry of the laptop that I can use to install just Vista if I download it from the net somewhere?
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1545. When I type, it will open windows (such as a find menu, replace menu, or even a new document) or reformat my text (hanging indents, etc.) out of the blue.
It acts as if the control key is being pressed, but I am very careful not to hit it. At first we thought it was a sticky key, but replacing the keyboard did not fix the problem.
We reinstalled all the drivers, ran diagnostics, etc., but none of it did any good. Dell support said they had never heard of this problem. Nothing they suggested helped. Finally we had them send us a replacement.
The second computer arrived yesteday and it does the exact same thing. When I am typing in Microsoft Word, Excel or even Notepad, it erases text (sometimes the entire document), opens random windows, etc.
What is going on? I can't believe that three keyboards in a row would be faulty, but the problem does not happen when I use a wireless keyboard. It has been less than a month since we ordered the computer originally. Is there anything that can be done or should I just return it and look elsewhere?
Ive purchased a 4TB external HDD for use with my MBP.
The unit has 2x2TB drives in it, and I have set it to mirror one drive to the other - so I have 2TB of useable space.
1. I always tend to use FAT32 in case I ever want to connect a Windows machine to use it, which isnt very often TBH - but at least I know I can if need be. I dont save any files larger then 4GB onto the drive. Should I stick with FAT32 or move over to HFS+ ? Are there any other benefits to HFS+ over FAT32 other then larger file sizes etc?
2. Is Firewire 800 Hot Swappable - or do I need to connect the drive with my MBP off, then boot up?
I successfully upgrade an old laptop so that it will run well and not be too costly to upgrade either? So slow at present....

it's pretty well known that if you are using a Windows machine and it starts to feel really sluggish, a fresh format makes it spiffy and snappy. Does the same rule apply with osx? Since the first day of using my 17" unibody mbp, osx has always felt more sluggish than windows xp. Not only that, it's kind of unstable especially with Firefox for some odd reason.
Would a fresh format with the included osx cd help fix the problem and make it as snappy if not snappier than win xp?
Since my laptop (dv6 pavilion 7090el) had to be formatted to another copy of windows 7 (64bit), i can't manage to make hotkeys for brightness(f2-f3)/volume(f9-f10).
I tried to install/uninstall/install HP quick launch software (with all the system restarting combos possible) and the software doesn't really seem to be installed, since it only appears in the Control panel but not anywhere else.
The BIOS "action key" option in System configuration is already "enabled" ....
ive just re-installed vista home premium on my acer travelmate 5320 but now the led for the wireless is reversed, so when the wifi is on the led is off and vice versa does anyone have any ideas whatsoever as i am at a loss with this one.

Fine for all I need but I would love to upgrade the memory. I see it says it can only go up to 1 gig and that it has 256 as standard.
I see there is a slot under a cover on the back, but only 1 slot (Unless I'm not looking properly)
Can I just stick a 1 gig unit in this slot and all will be fine or is there some unusual method to upgrading the memory. Hope it's nothing like the old Dells
