Apple :: Anyone Put A HDD In Their OptiBay - What Adapter To Use
Jul 28, 2009
I'm going to get a 34nm Intel SSD as soon as I can, along with a new 13" MBP.
I wanted to throw my current 500GB drive into the OptiBay. I read that MCE makes a adapter.
On the hardware page there's a thread that tells you the chipset and the corresponding adapter to use, The MBP's chipset is ICH9/m or something,
Since the MBP is slot load, can I just throw one of those adapters in and it will fit (they are designed I think, for the laptops that are tray load)
Or will I have to cut the end off of it?
I don't care if I have to cut the end off it's better than paying the extra for the adapter.
I can 'eject' the drive when I'm not using it, but will it 'turn off' and cease using power? I don't care if my battery life goes down 30 min from it, but I do care if it's >an hour.
It'd be really nice to get a smallish SSD for my OS and a large spinner for my BitTorrent. I know I can do external but then I need to carry around cables and use my precious USB ports. I hate external drives because the cables are 1 foot long and they always end up getting thrown around as I move on the couch or whatever. I can't wait until someone makes a wUSB enclosure that's battery powered so I can just stuff it into my bag and not worry about that stuff.

has anyone used the Optibay on 12.5 mm height drives? i was hoping to put one in my MBP to add 750gb rather than the normal 500GB on standard 9.5mm height drives. I don't want to order the hard drive if it wont fit though, and I cant seem to find any info about anyone who has tried this, or the exact space thats available in there when you use an Optibay.

I recently purchased a new base model 15" Macbook Pro with the firm intention of upgrading the main drive to a SSD. Historically, there has been some issues with a do-it-yourself upgrade to SSD using Mac hardware and I happy to report that I have had no issues, save those caused by myself in the doing the swap.
I decided the best course of action was to use a SSD for my main application and OS drive, and use a standard 2.5" mechanical HD for my files. The downside is, of course, you lose your internal Superdrive. However, as I was contemplating this, I realized that I rarely use my optical drive outside of software installs. It then became an easy choice. Of course, you can always just swap the standard internal drive for a SSD, but space and cost quickly become deciding factors. Keep in mind that if you plan to install Windows 7, you need at least 20GB of space just for it, before any other Windows software. Snow Leopard takes around 8GB and some of the higher end software can take gigabytes on their own (The Final Cut Studio suite alone takes around 50GB).
After a ton of research with some conflicting information I decided on the Crucial M225 128GB SSD. It uses the Indilinx Barefoot controller with 64MB of cache and is price competitive at around $325. The Kingston V-series is cheaper, but uses a modified J-micron controller (meh - sorry J-micron, too much history there). Another choice, and one I nearly made, is a Corsair series drive. Note that apparently the Nova series has some issues with the Macintosh notebook line, so the P series will be your best bet there. Of course, you could go for the gold and choose an Intel based SSD. Most Mac guys seem to have the best luck with these drives, but I decided I like the price/performance of the Crucial better..............

a lot of times when i let the magsafe get magnetically attracted to the port, it aligns crookedly (the side-butt round part of it sticking up a little bit) and I gotta push my thumb down to align it in place, flush with the machine edge. I can also do this and it will land straight but not if I'm being sloppy and careless with the magnetic attraction -- more so than the other 3 unibody MacBook Pro's I've had with the same macbook air charger). Do you think the cable is defective, it stills seems to be doing it with my computer. Tried it on my buddy's classic MacBook Pro (the magsafe adapter) and it does the same thing. Also, tried the classic adapter on mine and it has the same fit as on his. So I don't think it's my port, I think the cable is either defective or just more strongly magnetized and needs to be corrected with a push or something.

ETA on this dongle is today and I've been frantically F5ing the page even though I set the notification option. Can't wait for this so I can plug my MBP into my 42" LCD and get some old school Phantasy Star Online and Boxee internet TV going. Anyone else going to pick this up?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 and my friend has a Latitude D820.
Tonight she accidentally plugged my power adapter into her laptop. A few hours later, she noticed that her laptop indicated that it wasn't plugged in, and that's when we realized that she had accidentally used my adapter instead of hers.
Now my adapter doesn't work at all. We've tried the adapter with both our laptops with different outlets with the same problem, so we know it's the adapter. The green light also doesn't come on when it's plugged in anymore.
Did plugging my adapter into her laptop somehow screw up my adapter, or could this just be a coincidence? Is there any way to fix the adapter or at least figure out what the problem is? And if I have to purchase a new adapter, do the universal ones they sell at retail electronics stores work OK? I would order one from Dell but I'm working on a project now and I don't have time to wait for it to ship.

I am a current owner of VGN-SZ650NC and using AC Adapter (VGP-AC19V25) and according to the marketing material my laptop power requirements is 105W + 10% and I am planning to get a smaller AC Adapter (VGP-AC16V10) and it is good for a VGN-TT180C with Power Requirements is 68 W + 10%.

I was watching a movie upstairs and the adapter was working perfectly fine. I unplugged it and went downstairs, then replugged it in and the little light that indicates the laptop is charging, would not show up.
I put the adapter to my ear and heard the very faint beep/buzz noise it makes, making me believe that it's working fine.
Well I plugged in the adapter to my father's Dell notebook, then plugged it into my laptop and it's working perfectly fine.
Is there anything I can do for my HP battery? I mean, the last time something like this happened with an HP I had, the adapter wasn't even making the faint noise, it was just dead. I ended up having to buy a universal one. I would use that one for this notebook except, it doesn't fit into the slot.

I've got Dell Latitude C 640. I had to reinstall the operating system from recovery disks. All was smooth.
Now, when I'm trying to install a driver for the wireless adapter it asks me to remove the adapter first. I can't find it to remove it.

I'm seriously thinking of replacing my Go 7900 GS GPU with a Go 7900 GTX. (within some time because I don't have enough money right now (I'm only 14).
Now is my question, is my adapter going to be strong enough for the Go 7900 GTX? From other hardware, I have a T7400 (2,16 Ghz Core 2 duo) a seagate 7200.3 (Seagate says: "The Seagate® Momentus® 7200.3 laptop hard drive delivers industry-leading 7200-RPM performance while offering the industry’s lowest power consumption levels.") I have 4 GIG hyperx RAM.
And another question: where can I buy a Go 7900 GTX, I found some on EBay, but I don't like that way of buying things. Is there a direct way to buy one from Dell? I searched on their sitre but didn't find any link for spare part GPU's.

ok so i hv this problem with my dell xps m1330 that it wont charge the battery. and when i turn the laptop on, it gives me message that tht AC adapter can not be recognized, and that the battery may not charge.
i tried reinstalling windows but it still didnt help :S. so i called Dell technical support and talked to this guy for 40 mins, he told me a bunch of stuff , like reseting stuff in BIOS etc. but it didnt work. so at the end he just said to send the laptop for repair.
Even though i still have the manufacturing warranty, but i CANT send my laptop in for repair, bc i really NEED it for my university. And also he wont agree to send me a replacement laptop or anything.
so i really dont know what to do. i know there are alot of experts here, who are way better than dell technical support team. so does any one has an easy way out for this problem

The battery on my vostro 1400 isn't being charged when the adapter is plugged in. However it is providing it with power since the battery doesnt drain when it's plugged in.
Is the problem that the adapter has gotten messed up and the computer doesnt recognize it and won't charge up to protect a possible power incompatibility or that the adapter is still fine and it's actually the battery that is malfunctiona
