View 10 RepliesI am about to upgrade my laptop HD from 320GB 5.4k RPM to either 500GB 7,2K RPM or 750GB 5,4K RPM.
Which one do you think I should get?
Will 7200RPM will give noticeable different in speed compare to 5400RPM ?
How much in % do I get improvement in speed?
Which drive will the envy 17 come with and which drive performs better? These are the only 2 2.5" 1TB drives i see released as of now.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Pavilion M6 1045DX laptop and the HD crashed. It was 750GB so off to eBay I went to buy another one. I decided to buy a NEW SEALED HD so I bought a blue label WD brand new. (March 2014) Just for grins I wiped and verified the drive and it passed. I temporarily installed a 40GB hard drive to build the machine while I was waiting for the new drive figuring I would just clone it when it arrived. When I went to clone the test drive to the new drive I received an error about block sizes. I use the Apricorn DriveWire and have seen this on a rare occasion. I thought maybe a different cloning software would work but to no avail. Same error.
Rather than fight with it I decide to put the new 750 drive in the laptop and build it all over again. This is when I received this error.“Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware”So, I grabbed another blue label 160GB WD drive and it installed Win 7 fine on the laptop. I then took the 750GB drive and installed in on an old IBM T61 and it too installed fine. I also installed the new 750GB drive on a Dell inspirion N5040 laptop with complete success. Why the new 750GB WD drive gives me this error on "only" the HP Pavilion M6? This laptop doesn’t have RAID and was NOT Built for windows 8. It came with Windows 7. And yes I’ve reset the bios back to factor standards!
I would love a 15k mac pro hd when I order my new system....but are they loud? I have 2 raptors in RAID in my XPS and while its not loud...it's not quiet either. Anyone own a 15k drive and can speak for it in the Mac Pro?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 WD Elements External Drives - 640GB each, one formatted in FAT32, the other in NTFS.
I know OS X does not write NTFS drives, but I've got NTFS for MAC installed.
I have a problem: Everytime I connect either drive and leave them for sometime (at times just a couple of minutes) they eject unexpectedly. An error message pops up saying that the drive has not been properly ejected.
However, there are times where I can connect without problems but when I try to copy a file, half-way it disconnects again (This is with the NTFS-formatted drive)
On my FAT32 drive, when I connect successfully, either I can copy stuff, or the message : "Error Code 0, unexpected error occured" pops out
What should I do? I have disabled the NTFS for MAC driver but it does not solve my problem.
is it possible to add some file type to a flash drive / external hard disk to give a nice icon on the desktop for that particular drive when its plugged in? i know how to change the generic icon, but thats not what i want.
View 10 Replies View Relatedhas anyone used the Optibay on 12.5 mm height drives? i was hoping to put one in my MBP to add 750gb rather than the normal 500GB on standard 9.5mm height drives. I don't want to order the hard drive if it wont fit though, and I cant seem to find any info about anyone who has tried this, or the exact space thats available in there when you use an Optibay.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a SSD/HDD setup in my 13" MBP, 60GB and 500GB respectively, that being said, I want to make the link to "Movies, Torrent, and Applications" go there.
For Torrent and Applications it's easy, move the folders, delete the original, set an alias in the home folder. Done. (My application folder is for storing Games, and other Apps that are either OSX or WIndows apps, not the actual App folder that OSX uses for programs.)
Anyways, I create a Movies folder on my other HDD, and go to delete the old Movies folder on the SSD/OSX Drive, and OSX tells me, "You cannot delete because this folder is required by OSX."
OK, but how do I get it to link to the new drive?
In Win 7 I remember just opening properties, and clicking 'set target folder' and bam it's done. I did this a lot back then.
ALSO, If I UNMOUNT my second HDD, does it 'shut off' and 'stop consuming power'?
I realised I can re-mount it in Disk Utilities, and probably with a Unix command.
I just wanna save power when I'm mobile, by not having to use the spinner.
Has anyone tried one of the netbook mini PCI SSD drives in an inspriron?
How about the regular SSD drives? I have a 1525 I am considering updating a smidge .....
I'm willing to purchase my first Macbook Pro, but I have one huge question mark in mind: Will I get to access all my data on my NTFS-formated external hard drives? If so, how, is it natively supported with Mac OS X?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI currently have everything I ever need on one laptop -- a mid-2009 15" MBP. Having had a slew of hard drive problems over the past few years, and given that such disks are regularly the source of problems (before, say, a logic board), I'm considering purchasing a spare hard drive and keeping it, or the one in my machine, as a backup disk for the day when my current drive dies. The closest Apple store is ~45 minutes away, and I'm perfectly capable of doing my own computer surgery. An inoperable laptop would be a pretty significant problem for me.
So basically, my questions are twofold:
- From perusing the hard drive threads a few months back here in the Apple forum, it seems like WD's Scorpio Blue (500 GB, 5400 RPM) is the popular choice. Given the time that's elapsed since its release (and the thinning of hard drive threads after the last "big one" I found), are there any other drives, SSD or standard, that can beat it in terms of power usage / noise / performance overall without gouging the bill too much?
- I use Time Machine with a Time Capsule to keep everything nice and backed up, but an HD/SSD swap would be best done with an image of my entire drive. Is Carbon Copy Cloner still the go-to for that?
I just bought a race game for my new Mac Book Pro 15.
& starting thinking how much better it would be with a game controler..
I know Mac sells game controllers similar to the play station ones.
Then I realized that my Play Station controller is a blue tooth...
Might it mate with my Mac?
To save me from having to buy another?
Knowing Mac I doubt it..
They probably thought out ahead of time as another way we have to give them more money.
Few weeks ago I brought the WD blue 640GB, and lately swapped it out and put the old Hard drive back in because the WD was making too much noises. AFter I putting the old one back in here, the OS X starts running at the temperature of 56-58 degree C. The CPU is also running something such that it's used percentage is jumping around 10% and 20 % constantly. I start using it right now, and the upper left corner is getting warmer without running any significant job.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been using it since the first day and I have to say I like it. Though, as soon as I could I changed the address bar so that it used the original blue progress indicator instead of the stupid spinner. That was a mistake, IMO, getting rid of the blue progress indicator. Thankfully you can edit the preferences file to get it back.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIn windows (Office 2007):
Open .docx file
Save as .pdf
PDF is perfect. The blue page background is clearly displayed too.
In OSX (Office for mac 2008):

PDF is perfect, except the blue background is now white
I've had my MBP since 1 week now, and I've been using it a lot. At first, the startup time was around 35 seconds, but recently I have noticed that the blue screen at the end of the startup process is staying for much longer than it should (around 8 seconds).
I have tried:
-Repairing Disk with the Disk Utility and the Leopard DVD
-Repairing Permissions
-Defragmenting (3rd party software)
-Deleting the ApplicationEnhancement.bundle file using [command-S]
-Deleting preference files of uninstalled programs.
But nothing worked. The blue screen still lasts 8 seconds and the pointer appears at the top left corner. The startup time is now 50 seconds, which is about the same as Windows and I don't want that.
I fitted the above HD into my Macbook Pro unibody a fair few months ago and it generally works great, I was even more impressed at how easy it was to install as I'm by no means a computer expert!
Anyway, the one niggle I have is that my Pro is running hotter, so much so that instead of a niggle I am a little worried.
It seems to be worse when I am running programs with the Apple OS but also using Windows XP with Fusion. The heat is a worry but the noise of the fans is just plain annoying. Prior to fitting this hard drive I never heard a peep out of the stock 250GB drive, either from the fans or the drive itself (as an aside, I can hear the new drive, but its quiet and not a problem). Likewise, it never seemed to get hot.
What confuses me is that the heat doesn't come from the area where the drive is. As you look at your laptop during normal use, the hot part is to the rear left of the base (i.e. the keyboard part).
I notice that Apple have 500GB drives available as an option on Macbook Pros now, does anyone know what make these could be? Also, does anyone have any experience with these yet?
I have this mac ibook4 that keeps giving me a blue screen, when i ever it's powered on
i need to know what is really causing that. i just doesn't respond to anything and some times the screen blinks.
I have the latest version of Adium download on my new Macbook Pro but for some reason my Display Picture Icon only shows the Blue/Green MSN Buddy on the other end of the party.
The other party cannot see my Icon Picture of which I have set in my preferences.
Anyone else have this problem or know how to resolve it? I use MSN Messenger.
I got the blue of death in VMware fusion with windows vista ultimate,I think "Defender" did it, every time I go to the vmware to start windows the blue screen shows up, anyway around this ? I can't do any safe modes or last good configs.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am a macbook user who had my first OS X blue screen. So I installed a new canon printer today, updated ilife 08 to ilife 09(I discovered that the ilife that preinstalled was 08 and the disk that came with macbook was ilife 09, suprise ), and was about to do some software update.
After the software update program checked that there were 6 new updates, it then freeze, and result in slowing other softwares. Then I figured out there is a force quit in apple menu, so I used it and restarted the system. But after the screen turned into blue, it wouldn't respond any more. So I stared at the blue screen for about a minute, and realized that Mac does crash and has blue screen
After anther one minute of waiting, I pushed down the power button and forced the computer to shut down( something I learned from my old Fujitsu laptop, it is one tough laptop, and it lasts for over 8 years already, and still running).
After the computer was restarted, I launched upgrade again, and this time nothing happened. Then I figured out there is something called disk utility that I can use to check the disk, and after the disk permission check, it came back with many permission changes for the canon printer program and some other programs, so I repaired them.
So I'm just browsing the XPS 1645 as I was curious about looking at the i7 configurations. Is it just me or has Dell taken off all Blu-Ray options?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had an XPS 1710 for 3.5 years and am itching for an upgrade, but I'm doing my best to wait for the xps16 refresh. I'm started to get a bit irritated with the speed of my 160gb 5400 rpm laptop drive so I was thinking of upgrading to a SSD while I wait.

View 5 Replies View Relatedhow many hard drives could fit in the Vaio Z, because on the SonyStyle site when configuring the HD's and choosing for example 256GB SSD it shows 2x128GB SSD. Does this mean 2x SSD hard drives? If so then I'm wondering why they don't make the option available to put in 2x256GB SSD's. Also, if 2 SSD's are possible, are 2 standard 2,5" spinning HD's possible?

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy notebook has the optiarc 5500S BD Rom and I've only had it for a couple days. I've tried a few blu rays using quickplay but the playback is a little stuttery, especially when skipping from scene to scene. Overall, playback is fairly smooth but my eyes are really picky and I can tell it's not as smooth and fluid as it would be if I were to watch it on my ps3.
I'm wondering if PowerDVD (blu ray version) would be smoother. What are your experiences with blu ray on your notebooks and what software do you use?
i bought HP Pavilion dv5-1060ee Entertainment Notebook PC & it comes with vista installed in it.
To change my operating system from vista to XP by providing XP Drives , because i have check the hp site for it and i didn't find it !
I just checked out Dells web site for the Studio 17 and on the menu you can select 1 500G drive or 2 320G drives.
Does the Studio 17 have slots for two drives ??
If not, does the second drive just come in an extra box ??
What manufacture drives does Dell use these days ?
