Apple :: WD5000BEVT (500GB 5400RPM) - 1.5Gb/s
Jul 19, 2009
I am planning on upgrading my stock 120GB to a WD 500GB 5400RPM HDD. Because of SATA limitations on my 2007 MBP, it has transfer rates of 1.5Gb/s and not 3.0Gb/s. I was told that HDD's do have firmware or jumpers that can use 1.5Gb/s.
I've seen alot of members who have used this HDD, but I'm not sure if you guys have 1.5Gb/s or 3.0Gb/s transfer rates and whether or not it will work with this HDD. Can you guys clarify this issue for me?

to upgrade the hard drive of my recently bought Macbook unibody. Like most of you know, it traditionally comes with a Toshiba hard disk of 160GB 5400 RPM. I didn't buy an upgrade from Apple as I deem their prices to be fairly high, nor didn't they offer the hard drive I wanted.
Having done quite some research, I have selected the following three hard drives:
WD5000BVET (Scorpio Blue) - 500GB, 5400RPM, 8mb cache - EUR 94
WD3200BJKT (Scorpio Black) - 320GB, 7200.3RPM, 16mb cache - EUR 82
Seagate 7200.4 - 320GB, 7200.4RPM, 16mb cache - EUR 130
There are currently so many threads and such an overload of information that I really don't know what would be the best choice... I should say that the Seagate disk is very hard to obtain as most stores don't have it in stock yet in the Netherlands.
What I deem to be important (from most to least):
1.Speed
2.Heat/noise
3.Consumption
4.Space
5.Price

I currently have a 320GB Hard Drive. I separate it into 2 separate partitions of 64GB and the rest on the other.
What will happen if I were to get a new HD and I want to transfer everything over?
Basically, I have MacOSX and I want to install W7 in a separate partition of about 64GB or maybe less.
I want to upgrade to 500GB HD, and keep all the info and data I already have on my current HD.
I'm guessing the best way to do this is to just reinstall mac OSX and W7 and transfer the files over? What about programs?

I managed to buy a 6 week old refurbished macbook pro at 2.8ghz, with 4gb ram and a 320gb HDD. its a late 08 model. Arnt they surpose to have 500gb HDD's and if they only have 320gb hdd's? Also is it 540rpm or 7200 rpm and is there any way to find out?
Also didnt the macbook pros only go to 2.66ghz?
Although the apple info on the box(pic on ebay) shows 2.8ghz, 320gb HDD.

i want to install leopard fresh on the new 500gb drive. so from my understanding, there's a migration assistant that will help me transfer my apps, my music, my photos, etc from my old drive (attatched via usb) to my new installation right? what happens to software licenses and stuff? i use mostly opensource software, so my main concern is will my ilife installation remain intact? I use omnioutliner too. it was bundled with my mac... will my registration remain valid?

I fitted the above HD into my Macbook Pro unibody a fair few months ago and it generally works great, I was even more impressed at how easy it was to install as I'm by no means a computer expert!
Anyway, the one niggle I have is that my Pro is running hotter, so much so that instead of a niggle I am a little worried.
It seems to be worse when I am running programs with the Apple OS but also using Windows XP with Fusion. The heat is a worry but the noise of the fans is just plain annoying. Prior to fitting this hard drive I never heard a peep out of the stock 250GB drive, either from the fans or the drive itself (as an aside, I can hear the new drive, but its quiet and not a problem). Likewise, it never seemed to get hot.
What confuses me is that the heat doesn't come from the area where the drive is. As you look at your laptop during normal use, the hot part is to the rear left of the base (i.e. the keyboard part).
I notice that Apple have 500GB drives available as an option on Macbook Pros now, does anyone know what make these could be? Also, does anyone have any experience with these yet?

I skimped a little on the hard drive when I ordered my xps1640. Since then I have set up raid on my desk top & notice a huge improvement. Since doing that my xps has started to seem very sluggish. Would there be much of a noticeable speed increase taking out my xps 5400rpm hdd & replacing with a 7200rpm hdd?

I'm sicking of having to set hdparm to 254 every time i resume from sleep. It's annoying as heck.
I also don't want to hear my damn drive clicking all the time. I've done some digging and apparently WD has released a firmware update for this drive to fix the issue.
However, I cannot find this anywhere. Does anybody know where I can get a hold of it?

I'm looking to spend a little tax money on a HDD upgrade, but I'm just a little curious what everyone else on here thinks about my options and what you would do if it were you?
I can either go with the 320GB Western Digitial SATA300 or a 200GB 7200RPM alternative.
Tom's Hardware has a review of some of the recent additions to the 320 5400RPM Drives and they say the performance is at or above any 7200RPM drives out there.

Has anyone been able to tell a difference between 5400 rpm and 7200?
I think awhile back i ran some benchmarks, there may have been a little bit of a jump between the two.. but i cant recall if in the real world it was that noticeable.
i took a look at some relative numbers, i think the performance mark diskmark for a 7200 rpm drive was around 388, while on the 5400 it was 255, thats a 35% jump if accurate.
Also, i'm not sure if 7200rpm would drain the battery quicker etc..
I had initially orded it with a single 320gb 5400 rpm, i was thinking of adding a 2nd (primary) 7200 rpm drive.
Also.. are these hp dv7ts using sataI or sataII drives?

What is the best 500 drive currently available? From a performance/noise/etc... I plan to use it as a 2nd drive (OS drive being 128SSD)
Per another post -thx Boo- Newegg has the Samsung on sale but how about the WD or Seagate.
Can folks share their experience with the 3 500's that are out there.

I am trying to decide between the following 2 Z's which are approx. the same price.
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz / 4GB RAM / 128GB SSD / DVD±R/RW / Hybrid Graphics / 802.11AGN / WWAN / Bluetooth / GPS / Webcam / Windows 7 Professional [ SON VGNZ880GB ]
Intel Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66GHz / 4GB RAM / 500GB HD / DVD±R/RW / Hybrid Graphics / 802.11AGN / WWAN / Bluetooth / GPS / Webcam / Windows 7 Professional [ SON VGNZ850GB ]
I do everyday tasks like MS office,MS Streets, and use approx. 10GB for my multimedia files.
My first question is, will I notice the difference in speed? Will be the SSD with P8700 faster than the HDD 5400 RPM with P8800 in terms of boot,read-write documents etc?
If I go with the 128 GB SSD, how much free space can I expect to have on the drive after W7 ?

Which one do you think I should get?
Will 7200RPM will give noticeable different in speed compare to 5400RPM ?
How much in % do I get improvement in speed?

So I detailed my experience with the hard drive clicking in my blog post here, and I recorded a video to demonstrate the sounds here. Has anyone else experienced hard drive clicking in their
Dell Studios? This isn't so loud that it's clearly a sign of HD failure, but it's not so quiet that I feel that I can blow it off and not worry about it.

any opinions on the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500gb st9500420asg hard drive when used in an acer 6935g. I am looking to replace my existing hitachi 250gb hard drive with the seagate, for when i upgrade the os to win 7 pro 64bit.
I am interested in the following aspects:
- Hard drive speed in real world use, ie is the laptop noticeably faster in use and in booting up, shutting down? Yes, i know it is 7200 compared to the 5400 but does the speed actually make a difference..?
- Power (battery) useage, is there much reduction in battery life (20 minutes or more)?
-noise, is it noiser than the stock hdd, if so is it annoyingly noisy?
I have done my research on the web and in some reviews it is highly rated but in another they recommend the wd scorpio blue and in another the equivalent hitachi. So that is why i am asking here for peoples actual experience of the drive in an acer 6935g or similar acer laptop and not relying on the tests done with some other pc rig that they used.

I've worked out the physical process of replacing the installed 200GB 2.5 inch Hard Drive to a 500GB Werstern Digital 500GB 2.5 inch Hard Drive. Overall it looks pretty easy. It's what happens once the drive is fitted and I turn on the laptop that I'm a bit worried about.
Do I just load the recovery discs as usual or is there something I need to do in BIOS? Also will the motherboard cope with a 500GB Hard Drive?

I had a problem with my old windows vista, and cannot restart windows. I put in a brand new 500hd. The windows 7 goes through the whole install procedure, but the last step "completing installation", it does not complete, but locks up. I have tried several times, and even removed the cd before the final restart, to have it search the HD for start-up soft ware, as I have read, but nothing works.
