Dell :: 1525 Broken Keyboard ZIF Clip
Nov 23, 2009
I busted off a keyboard ZIF clip on a laptop I was working on. Now no matter what I try I can not get all keys to work. Contacted Dell and they can't give me the part number for the clip so I am able to order a new one.
Can anyone by chance identify the part number of the connector or have any ideas as to how to make all keys work again when fixing the cable in it.
Attached a few pics to help identify/see what I am working with. I'd really like to not have to shell out $120 on a used mobo just to replace it.

I bought a new Acer E5-571-5552 recently, it came with Windows 8.1 64bit. One of the ways I use my laptop often is in "docked mode", basically connect it to external monitor via HDMI, and external USB mouse & keyboard. I set the windows power options for "close lid" to do nothing, then it works fine like a desktop. This works fine with all other laptops I've used in the past (Lenovo, HP, Toshiba...etc). But this new Acer has trouble waking from sleep, the USB keyboard & mouse only light up, but doesn't wake up the fan/drive/monitor. I have to open the lid and press a key on the laptop (USB keyboard/mouse still doesn't).
Â
I've opened case 3601882U and chatted with 2 agents, one had me update to latest BIOS 1.11 which didn't resolve it. The other tried to insist it was a limited feature, that the Acers had to have lid open to wake up the computer from sleep. I think this is a broken feature. Is this true for all Acers, or just this windows 8.1 model?

I happened to get both a Dell Inspiron 1525 (for $700) and a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 (for $1800) at the same time. To my amazement, I like the Dell better and may return the Lenovo. Here's why.
1) Display: I'm surprised by how much better the Dell's display is for basic work (word-processing, writing emails, surfing the web); and equally surprised that I haven't seen mention of this in various reviews. Both laptops have a 15" WXGA display. (The Dell happens to have Vista; the Lenovo has XP, but both are brand new.) Are reviewers getting caught up in the technical details, and forgetting to report on what matters most: how easy on the eyes the display is when one works, 8 hours/day? ("Not able to see the display, for the specs"?)
(a) The Lenovo T500's display sucks. Characters look fuzzy, because the dots that comprise them are visible. Diagonal lines, as in the "/" character, have jagged edges (whereas on the Dell they appear more like solid lines, crisp, clear). I almost have to squint to read the Lenovo, whereas characters on the Dell stand out. [UPDATE: Swarmer helpfully points out that ClearType is not the default in XP, one must turn it on, and that doing so vastly improves the legibility of script. See below.]
(b) The Lenovo's background display color is a sickly blue-green off-white (which shows less contrast for the default blue-colored hyperlinks), whereas the Dell has a healthier peach off-white that contrasts well with links.
I don't know if taking screen-shots or taking a digital picture of the two screens side-by-side would show what I'm talking about, but I'm willing to try if anyone wants. I use my laptop for work, so I don't care how they perform on gaming or watching HD videos. I just want to type and read (with an occasional low-def YouTube video), with the best laptop display I can find!
Has anyone else been able to compare both notebooks side-by-side? I'd love to hear some confirmation that I'm not crazy or making this up.
2) Keyboard:
(a) The Inspiron's keyboard is almost an inch wider than the Thinkpad's, even though the two laptops are the same width overall. That's because the Lenovo has 1.5" of wasted space on each side of the keyboard, which makes the keyboard cramped -- how stupid is that? (I'm guessing the Lenovo T500 and T400 use the same size keyboard, whereas the Dell 1525 uses a wider keyboard than the Dell 1420 -- taking advantage of the width, as it should.) Having a 3/4" narrower keyboard on the Lenovo means my fingers touch each other when lined up asdf-jkl; whereas the Dell keyboard is just enough wider that they don't touch, which means less cramping/fatigue/karpal-tunnel.
Small keyboard things:
(b) The Inspiron puts the left Ctrl key on the outside where it belongs, whereas on the Lenovo it is tucked one key in (with Fn on the outside) which makes it hard to find (unless your left little-finger is especially dextrous at curling down and in -- mine isn't, and I have to look every time on the Lenovo).
(c) The Lenovo puts the Esc key on a row above the function keys, rather than on the far-left. I suppose one gets used to it, but I'm constantly hitting the F3 when I reach for F2.
(d) I have no use for a track-point device, so it and the extra mouse-buttons for it are wasted on me, and the Lenovo's track-pad is smaller than the Dell's (although I do like the surface-feel of the Lenovo better -- slightly matte, vs. the too-polished Dell track-pad).
(e) Likewise, I won't ever use the Lenovo's keys for "browser Back" or "browser Forward", located in the cursor-key group. What a waste of keyboard real-estate. Make the darn keyboard bigger and simpler, Lenovo!
3) Battery: I have 3 batteries and swap them on long flights (14 hours non-stop to Asia). The Lenovo's battery is a pain in the butt to remove! It's a struggle every time, turning the unit around, trying not to break a fingernail when I try to pinch and wiggle the battery out. On the Dell, it pops right out easily.
Just so no-one thinks I'm pimping for Dell, the Inspiron's case is shoddily made -- a hinge completely broke in the first month of normal use, rendering it unusable, which is outrageous. Then the left-button on the touchpad broke! (The rubber 'spring' crumbled, necessitating replacing the entire "palm rest" which is 1/2 the case, a major operation.) The Dell's physical parts are less-well made overall -- the hinge, case, etc. -- they have a cheap, WalMart feel to them and I fear they will break again. The Lenovo has a very nice Porsche/Mercedes feel to the workmanship -- tight, well-built. If I could have the Dell's display, keyboard and battery, but the rest from Lenovo, I'd be happy. (Funnily enough, the only complaint I've read about the T500 keyboard is that it is not as "solid" as the older Lenovo models, which I really don't care about.)
I'm sure the Lenovo has better "specs" (by the #s). But if you hate staring at its screen, does it really matter?

Update: problem has been solved by using Windows 7 and Windows Media player 12.
This clip causes 100% CPU load on my 1810T. It seems to play smooth though.
Is there anyone that can play it with lower CPU load and good image quality?
If so, what is your setup?

the empty hole next to the clip where i clips the screen when you close it. To my guess is a 5-1 reader because i also have a modem port . My question is , is it normal that there is an empty hole with no casing inside? I mean there isn't a casing like for sd card or something , just an empty hole . What can i use it for since there is no casing for sd card? This is a picture i found from google.URL....

I've had the m1530 for 15 months (Out of warranty) Never really had any significant problems with it, until yesterday. When it boots up, it will load the desktop and then freeze.
The mouse will move, but nothing will load and everything stops. Not even Ctrl Alt Del works. I keep trying to reboot it, and I have got loads of various errors from the blue screen, a message saying my virus protection is not up to date, message saying a file is corrupted, and a message saying my firewall is turned off.
I guess it sounds like a virus, but it will load every-time in Safe Mode no problem (When I click on Firefox while in SM in actually causes it to freeze, but I uninstalled it and still have the prob). What can I do? Time to reinstall Vista?

My 7900 on the Dell M1710 I have has burnt up and I'm looking for a card to replace it with. I had thought the 7950 was a good replacement, but wondered with the shell being an M1710 are there other cards to put in there or is it only the 7900 and 7950.
Also, is there a good place you can think of to purchase these cards? Ebay is kinda dried up now.

After almost 7 services by the *always gentle* Dell techs, im getting a new problem, my WIFI reception is just crud, being right next to my router i get 4 bars... and if i get a little farther apart it will loose signal and oscillate between 3 bars and 1 bar, and sometimes even disconnect all of a sudden on places i always had good signal, and reconnecting will fail a couple of times before its successfully connects. ( ive tried this with several different routers, and the same happens )
is it possible that my WIFI antennas were damaged? or could it also be my wireless card? ( intel N 4950 )
i have already checked where the 3 antennas connect to the card and they seem ok.

I'm getting a weird white vertical line , about 2 inches thick, all over my display, it doesn't matter if I'm browsing software, or just at boot screen, the line is there.
Weird thing is, it seems to randomly dissappear sometimes, but appears again when trying to shut down the lappy, is the first time this thing happen to my display and I shuted down my lappy, hoping its propably a heat problem.
Here's a pic:

I hope that it doesn't be any gfx card problem...

I would like to thank The realfireblade for answering my post in a different forum. It has been impossible for me to answer him directly. The dell forum refuses my password.
I worked on that all day today, changing my account three or four times. I thought I had finally managed to create a new one that worked, but no, when I tried to answer Therealfireblade, the forum refused my password. I am not stupid, I had written the right password.
I have spent three days now trying to get in touch with somebody at Dell's to know where I can have my little laptop repaired. It is awful

Well, I've just managed to drop my laptop, and the part of the casing has snapped Its a clean snap snapped on the outside, on the just after the curve on the hinge (If you imagine the planel that says XPS on the casing,
well the crack is about the equivilent of half way up that, just after the curvature of the hinge)
I know my warranty doesnt cover accidental damage, so is there any way I could replace this casing myself, of fix it somehow?

when i woke up this morning one half of my screen was white and the other side was pretty dark.
So I decided to turn the computer off and kept it off for 30 mins. When I started it back up the backlight seemed fine but it still looks kind of dim on the left side.

Anyone else's HDMI port break on them? I barely used it.. I've had the XPS M1530 since late March/early April but when I tried to hook up my surround sound today it did not work. I tried using different cables, different port on the receiver, and tried directly with my HDTV but my computer does nothing. I updated the audio drivers and flashed the bios, but no luck. Pretty sure HDMI port broke. What a piece of garbage.
After my lid randomly cracking when I closed it less than a month ago and now this.. I can see how this computer will definitely break by the time my 3 yr warranty ends. Good job, Dell. Could they even replace the HDMI port on the machine or would they have to put in an entire new motherboard?

I was given a dell d620 with a broken screen. Looked like it was cracked down the middle. I replaced the screen (not the lid or hinges). It makes a clicking/cracking type noise when I open the lid. No visible cracks. Now, sometimes when it boots, i get vertical lines and sometimes dollar signs before Windows boots. Windows DOES boot fine with no lines whatsoever. I have researched and found the symptoms are the same for a bad vid card. (I know this has Integrated graphics). If my card was bad, would Windows still boot and look normal? Why would it only affect the boot screen?

i made a wrong step on my opened dvd drive, was bend ~ 30 degrees. sound: typical breaking plastic.
if i were a n00b i would just slide it in and stay calmed. but i know how complex computers are and don't want to loose my data (again) or have my house burned because of a shortcut or so.
btw shaking the laptop even with the drive removed sounds like there is a loosy jumper or something, is that normal?

I received my Studio 1555 this evening (was away at class, mother signed for package) and upon opening up the box and booting up the laptop, the screen has a small 1 inch crack at the top of it, on the left side of the camera. I don't see any damage on the lid where the crack is on the screen. I have already tried calling the technical support line with no help from the indian speaking fools there. Does anybody know if I'm going to have to send it back to Dell to have it repaired or will they send a tech out with it? I only have the basic 1 year warranty on it since I had to keep the price to a certain minimum.

I was listening music on my headphone and when I put it off the headphone jack, I didn't hear any sound. I realised there is a problem with the jack, a bad contact electronic contact.
Since then, the jack is more and more "moving". I always lose the sound and get it back and it's really disturbing.
I have a Inspiron 9300, and according to this photo (taken in this forum), [url] the headphone and microphone jack is at the left middle part.
Here is my 2 questions:
- Is the only way to solve it is to change the sound card?
- Is is supposed to be cover by th warranty? Because the sound card still work, the problem is the input jack itself.

I've been recently applying Arctic Silver 5 paste to my CPU/GPU according to the guide found on this forum. After that the temperatures not only did not drop they actually are slighlty higher. The problem may be that I haven't use the lint free cloth tough I did took care not to leave any lint on the surfaces. Anyway, I decided to redo a whole operation with much more care. Unfortunately as I opened my XPS M1530 one of the screws heads was broken in a way that I could not use any of my phillips screwdrivers on it. How can I remove it now & more importantly what are the dimensions/sizes of the screws that are used to attach the heatsing to the GPU/CPU as I may have to buy one to replace it & don't seem to be able to find that info anywhere?......
