Dell :: Average Lifespan Of XPS M1530 AC Adapter And Battery?
May 21, 2009
I was just wondering, among all the XPS M1530 owners. About how long did your AC adapter and battery (6-cell or 9-cell, please specify) last before they died out on you...
I've owned my XPS M1530 (6-cell batt) for about 8 month now, and I still have not encountered problems.
However, I've read other forums and even on the Dell Store and Website that many XPS M1530 owners are dissatisfied with their AC adapters and 6 or 9 cell batteries.........................

My current x230 is set to "Automatically optimize for battery lifespan" under battery maintenance. I read that for this settings, it'll set your battery to hover around 80%~ base on Lenovo forum under w530 section. However, i'm always seeing my battery at 100% when AC is plugged in; Remaining capacity: 62.47 wh ; Full charge capacity: 62.47wh. Is it suppose to be lesser? I suppose it not healthy for the battery to be constantly kept at 100%. Any x230 users experiencing this too?
Would like my battery to last at least 2 years. usage :70% AC plugged in,30% on the go.

On my old W520, it had a setting for making the battery last as long as possible. E.g. it didnt charge it to 100%.In my W530, which has windows 8, I can find no such option. In fact, all the Lenovo tools which came with the W520 dont seem to exist on the W530 (eiter because they dont have them for Windows 8, or they dont have them for the W530, dont know which).
The only lenovo tools I have are th "solution senter" from red icon in the task bar (which has a battery icon, but the only thing it does is say "batter is in good condition", there are no options or settings, and the thinkVantage button, which just brings up somehting like some shortcuts to control panel items - no Lenovo tools (just things like update drivers, warranty infomration, keyboard settings etc).
In the wiondows control panel itslef, are just: lenovo system healthlenovo update drivers 32bit (I never use this as I have 64 bit)Lenovo airbag protectionLenovo microphone muteIn control panel -> Power options is nothing Lenovo specific, and no lifespan mode, it only allows you to set when windows switches stuff off.
What happened to all the tools which came with windows 7, including the thing which told you how fast the processor was running, the thing to change your printer etc. with different locations?

Everytime i have my AC Adapter plugged in when i turn on my laptop, a black screen shows up (in DOS) and says that the AC Adapter is unknown and is not recognized or something is wrong with it, and there are 3 options, F1 to continue to start windows, F2 to do something and F5 to run on board diagnostics or something like that, the entire message is alot longer but that is all i can recall from that page.
However, the battery charges normally, and in windows, the battery icon shows as PLUGGED IN with AC Adapter when i have it plugged in and when i unplug it, it shows battery, which is normal.
My question is should i call up Dell or should i just ignore the problem? Or is there anyone know what is the problem and can help me.

It is a PA-10 family adapter (which the back of the laptop says is fine for use with this computer), the connector has a white tip and when I plug it into the jack on the left side of the computer there is about a quarter of an inch of metal showing......

I am just wondering if it is normal for the adapter to get hot. I just noticed it today, when i picked it up and it was pretty hot to the touch. Not so much that it burns,

When I boot up my laptop, I get this exact error:
Quote:
The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance.
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter
Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility. Press F5 to un onboard diagnostics.

I recently updated from BIOS A08 to A09 if that matters. Any ideas?

I am playing games like Modern Warfare 2, L4D2, GTA4, BF2 non stop. I have been playing for about 14 hours a day for the last 5 days, and obviously the fans are going at max speed non stop.
Will this extended heating damage/reduce the life of the laptop?

Now that I've got a new MBP with an awesome 7-hour battery, I want to prolong my batteries lifespan as long as possible (especially since it isn't user replaceable!).
According to this thread: Notebook Battery Guide
I should never fully discharge my battery to 0%. Apple's battery calibration tips [url], on the other hand, tell me to discharge to the cutoff point, then leave computer in sleep for 5 or more hours. Won't this discharge the battery to 0%?
I'd like to think that Apple wouldn't tell me to do something that would harm its own product, but I just wanted to double check for sure.
Also, what level are you guys usually draining your batteries to before charging them? The battery thread says 10-20%.

I ordered my Studio XPS 1645 on May 17, and it is dated to June 3rd for arrival.
Does Dell usually take that long or it's over-estimation on their part?
Has anyone else received it during their system during this time?
BTW I live in Toronto, Canada and, as of today, May 25, the status says "In Production"

I have a dv7t with 4GB of RAM.
With no programs running, I have about 33-39% of RAM being used. And with Firefox open, I have about 43% RAM in use (1730 MB).
I was just wondering if this is on par with you guys. I have done a pretty good job of keeping my computer in top shape and have minimized, as much as I can, the amount of startup processes.

The battery on my vostro 1400 isn't being charged when the adapter is plugged in. However it is providing it with power since the battery doesnt drain when it's plugged in.
Is the problem that the adapter has gotten messed up and the computer doesnt recognize it and won't charge up to protect a possible power incompatibility or that the adapter is still fine and it's actually the battery that is malfunctiona

When I plugged in my adapter to charge my laptop, it didn't respond to it. The light on the adapter is on, but the battery just wont charge.
I changed the AC adapter as a Hardware problem, but I couldn't change the battery because it is built-in.
On the other side of problem - I mean as a Software problem :
1. I tried to restore the system -from Backup and Restore - till the first point but nothing happened except it restored the first password . . !
2. I tried to make a restore from Dell DataSafe local Backup, but the system said the adapter and the battery must both plugged where the adapter doesn't respond at all.
3. I tried with Ubuntu Operating System (Linux), when I thought that problem Might be from Windows 7.
4. I upgraded the BIOS drive.
5.. I set the BIOS setting to the default - F2
When I plugs the AC Adapter the percentage never reduce, but the hours remaining changes, exactly shows (829 hr and 48 min (20%) remaining).

All of the sudden the battery stopped charging and the official dell AC Adapter, that shipped with the laptop, is listed as Unknown in the BIOS. I understand this happens because somewhere on the way the info from the pin that (for no good reason) identifies the AC adapter does not reach the charging circuit. This is supposed to be a safety mechanism (that no other manufacturer uses) that is obviously just an attack on off-brand chargers .The laptop is working fine (except for charging) as long as the AC adapter is connected.
What I did so far:
notice I'm out of warranty
try different power outlets
try different AC adapter
Check battery health (it's fine)
replace Power Jack

I have an xps12 that doesn't recognise its adaptor, runs fine on AC but batter is now totally dead. I tried a different Dell 45W adaptor (borrowed) and it charged the battery, I then bought a cheaper 3rd part adaptor - which also worked for a week or so.
Now am back to unrecognised adaptor, no charging. BIOS is version AO8 but even if there is an update I can't install since my battery is on zero. Battery utility (Fn F3) indicates my battery is healthy and performing normally, but charging is disabled and I don't see any obvious way to enable it.

I just had a battery replacement for my Dell XPS 15z.. Prior to the installation of the new battery, the machine could only work with the AC adapter plugged in, raising the suspicion that the battery was defective. However, now that a new battery has been installed, the battery does not charge even whiles the AC adapter is stilled plugged in.

Iv read a few posts online saying that Dell blocks people from using non dell power adapters on their machines by not letting those adapters charge the battery.
My issue is, I need a new power adapter AND a new battery.
I really don't wanna fork over $130 for a new 6 cell battery, Especially because on the dell site the reviewers themselves had given it a bad review saying the battery usually dies in a year or less.
That and my Budget is about $100 for both battery and adapter.
I need to find a battery that works, and an adapter that will actually charge the battery and keep the notebook charged.
This is basically a question out for Dell Inspiron users that have had this same issue and have had to replace the battery or the charger. If you guys could tell me what has worked for you and what has not, that way I can at least narrow down my options on chargers and batteries.
Id like to find a charger with the same volts as the dell charger has If I can't find a non official charger that works, could you guys at least point me to a less expensive site where I could buy the dell power adapter.
I would much rather just buy a charger and battery outside dell though because their products are by no means high quality and are in fact well overpriced.

I have a had Dell XPS 15z for a around a year and a half and it very suddenly stopped charging whilst plugged in. I didn't notice until the low battery warning came on that the computer had stopped recognizing the battery or the charger. I rebooted and went on BIOS, I don't know much, but I noted that it didn't see an adapter plugged in and it said that the battery is functioning normally. I've plugged the adapter into other laptops and it worked so it isn't the adapter.

I have a Dell XPS m140 when I use the ac adapter without the battery inserted the laptop powers up fine. When I insert the battery and the ac adapter the adapter turns off after a few seconds. If I unplug the ac adapter and do it again the same thing occurs. When I remove the battery and use the ac adapter after I unplug it from the wall the laptop will power up again. I don't know if the ac adapter is not strong enough to charge the battery and boot up. I tried just having the battery in and not turning on the laptop to see if the battery would charge and the ac adapter turns off after a few moments. Can a battery have a short in it to cause this or is the adapter finally going south? I tested the adapter and it shows 19.5v. when the adapter light goes off it tests 0. After I unplug it and replug it, it shows 19.5v again.I don't know where to go from here, new battery or new adapter.

I have had this laptop for 2 years and after the first year I had to replace both battery and adapter.
The first generic adapter I got was fine until the cable split (my fault as I was wrapping the cord around the brick).
I got the second generic from the same place I got the first.
I bought the new one last month and since then I have sporadically received a message that the adapter wasn't OEM and that it wouldn't charge the battery.
It would get back to charging after a reboot or stand by.
Now I have tried everything but it won't get back to charging the battery.
I did a search here and found others with the same problem (different dell laptops) solving the issue by flashing the bios.
Can anybody point me to the correct file I should download for my laptop as well as explain what should be done to flash the bios

One day,it will work, then the next day, nothing. I keep getting an error code saying that I need a65w adapter ,which the new one is. I have updated the BIOS and have done all of the other troubleshooting that I can find.

i have an older laptop (Acer Aspire 5100), Still works like new, but I was wondering what the average idle/ light usage temperatures are? Right now I'm getting a pretty solid temp reading at 45C, which I think it pretty good for a laptop. Anyone else have same/similar model (AMD D-C x64 TK-53 1.70 Ghz) that could give me there temps. Secondly I recently replaced the LCD and inverter. The inverter was for the orginal LCD but i got a matte screen instead of the glossy. I'm not sure whether it's always been like this since the original inverter, but i notice it get pretty warm over the plastic. I'm know there's quite a bit of voltage going through there, but it is it normal to get warm? (not burning temp, but noticeable hot/warm to the touch
