Dell :: D430 Ssd?
Oct 3, 2009
I picked up a D430 over the weekend and loaded up windows 7 on it and really have been enjoying it.
Since I go all over the place for work I would love a Solid State Drive for it but having some toruble finding one that would work for it.

I'm really curious about this. I own the latitude d430, and happen to have a mini9 64gb pci-e hard disk lying around.
For those of you familiar with the two laptops, the mini9 SSD's are a pci-e card, and the d430 happens to have two internal pci-e slots. As in one for wireless, and one for... well, wwan is what it's *for*, but I think you know where I'm going with this.
Anyways my SSD appears to be DOA (runcore model with usb interface, won't pick up on the usb, so I think it's dead) so I'm putting in an rma, but if that could be used as a hard disk in my d430,
I'd be absolutely extactic- even if I couldn't use it as the boot device, I've got the 40gb regular 1.8" hdd in here that could handle booting and then just run everything off the ssd, it'd be great. Lots of space, and lots of speed. (something like 70mb/s read and 40 write ....

I am looking to replace my aging 700m with either a Dell D420 or D430. The laptop is 90% for travel so I am mostly concerned about battery life. I'd like to make it cross country on one charge if possible.
I usually load up a bunch of DivX movies/TV shows on the drive and entertain myself on flights, etc. I do use it a bit for work on the road, but I'm not doing anything crazy so processing power is not much of a concern. Email, remote desktop, etc.
From those with either a D420 or D430, what kind of battery life can I expect from a 6 or 9 cell battery? I would prefer the 6 cell since it does not stick out, but 9 cell is ok since the machine is so small. I'm not opposed to taking a second battery as that is what I do with my 700m right now.
Which OS is going to yield more battery life? XP, Vista or 7?

I was getting ready to trash my d430. It was running XP and my SSD was so slow, painfully slow boot up, outlook loads, you name it.
I decided to try w7 and now it feels like a new computer. Boots up very quickly and my SSD is now running very fast, no hangups. Maybe it just needed an annual format and reload
I couldn't get a SDHC card to work with XP, nothing over 2gb. I tried an 8gb sdhc card and it also works. I'm going to get a 32gb class 6 card, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it works, and I will have 64gb of storage.
I think I'll hold onto this notebooks for awhile longer.

if a lower lat memory module will help in a D430? Normaly I think it would but seeing that you can't upgrade the 1G of onboard memory, I wonder if it would help at all?
And lastly, does anyone know if you can swap in a LED screen from a newer E4200 into a D420/430?

I have a dell D430 but the temprature is far too hot, dell could at least test their Ventilation system before releasing it, if i could add another fan or software to get around this. I have windows xp professional installed.

We've got 2 D430's in house and they are awesome. One of them just had the hard drive stop working and it was confirmed by swapping drives between the two systems. These have a 2.5" proprietary connection and Dell is telling me that there is no way to access the drive to potentially recover the data since its not a standard PATA interface. It's got some really small ribbon connector on the drive that hooks into a custom connection to the D430.
Does anyone have any ideas, or familiarity with how we can get access to this drive so we can run some utilities on it? Dell seems to be of little help here and the D430 simply doesn't recognize the drive at all. I'm not sure I would have bought these systems knowing that this was a potential issue.
I'm hoping there is some know interface that will allow the drive to hook into a standard PATA connection to recover data.

tell me whether a 64GB SD card can be used with the Lattitude D430. If so does it require any drivers or special set up - when ordering do I have to specify anything other than a standard card? As a matter of interest what is the largest SD card that can be used with the D430.

Is it normal that dell.ca would have fewer choices of screens than dell.com? I'm looking at the studio 15, and dell.com lists Hi Resolution/Bright,
glossy widescreen 15.4 WLED display (1440x900) as a choice, which is what I want, but dell.ca doesn't. When I view the system specs though, that choice is listed as on option.

my laptop vostro 3460 won't boot any more. When I turn it on it loads the Dell logo (I suppose it passes the POST) but then it just shows a black page. It could be anything, but I guess that it may have something to do with Windows 8 and the UEFI system. I also would be quite happy to install linux mint and get rid of Windows, but I don't know how to change the boot priority order.
So my questions are:
1 is it a hardware issue ? if not, can I solve my problem easily ?
2 how can I change the boot priority order, to install mint ?

when i first got my dell inspiron and it was all good. when i set the monitor to shut off after 1 minute of being idle, it did and would not turn on unless someone moved the mouse of pressed a button. however, after i reformatted, the computer monitor would shut off after 1 min but soon afterwards it turns on again by itself, then it goes off again, then it remains on permanently. i recently formatted my laptop again and this problem persists. anyone knows whats sup? im using xp ftw... and my configurations are the same as it was before the reformats so idk whats wrong.

i consider buying assassin's creed for pc to play it on my dell laptop (see sig).
any idea, how it will run? anyone with an i9400/e1705/oc'ed 7900gs, who already
played it? is it worth it or do i have to turn down the settings too much?
just for info: i can play gears of war, bioshock, ut3, cod4, et:qw, sega rally,
orange box, stalker, etc. at max settings at 1280x800 res. everything runs
smoothly like that. have to turn down aa or shadow qual. slightly down sometimes,
though.

Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to boot up and stay unfrozen long enough for me to retrieve my files, and put them on my tower pc.
In a nutshell, I got this Inspiron about 3 years ago- I currently have it connected to an external monitor, because my wife dropped a heavy object on the screen last year, and destroyed said screen.
Just this past week, I turned it on, and it started getting really slow. Finally, it got to a point where now, when I turn it on, it boots up, it goes to the desktop, the desktop icons all appear, and within a minute or two, it just kind of slows down, and eventually freezes up, and the hard drive indicator light quits doing anything. It does not respond to anything, and the only way to restart it, is to hold the power button down until it resets.
If anybody knows of a thread already on this site, regarding this problem, please point me in the right direction, as I tried the search function, and did not come up with anything.
and one or two other things, since it initially started having problems, sometimes, I will get two "missing module" error boxes pop up- and also, while it is booting, the screen flashes black for about 3 seconds, and then comes back on and continues to load.
Thank you very much to anybody who could possibly help me out of this jam. I really do not plan on using this laptop (or notebook) anymore, if and hopefully when, I get my files off of it.
And that is the other problem, I can not attempt to boot up in safe mode, as my screen is busted up, and it will not output to my external monitor, when I hit the f key while it is starting. I did make a couple different bootable cds, but they do not seem to do anything.

I enjoy gaming, although I wouldn't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer. I currently have 1024 MB of RAM (2 x 512) and I am looking to upgrade soon. My options are as follows:
- Dell certfied RAM
- PNY RAM
- Kingston RAM
- Corsair RAM
Of course, for the Dell RAM, I have to wait for the shipping, but it is one of the cheaper ones. However, any of the other three I can pick up at Best Buy (which is more convenient). Can someone point out the pros and cons of each? It seems the PNY is a great buy, but could there be performance problems compared to the others? And why is the Kingston so expensive?

I purchased an Inspiron 14z a few months ago and it has been working fine until recently - upon starting up, it freezes at the dell logo screen. I have searched for posts regarding this problem and have found no solutions that work for me; I've tried pressing F2 and F12 but no keystrokes will register.
