Dell :: Who Had M1730 Replaced With An M17x
Sep 29, 2009I was thinking that a list with people who got an M17x as a system replacement for the M1730 will be very useful for some of us.
That being said, I want to know what configuration you had before and what you got. Country is also important, so please note this as well.
Dell :: XPS M1730 Or Alienware M17X
Jun 5, 2009I had virtually decided on a XPS M1730 with a X9000 Extreme processer, Bluray read and write drive, 6GB ram, 1920 x 1200 screen, 640GB hard drive of ram, Nvidia 1GB 9800M GT Graphics (2x512MB in SLI mode) etc
I then started to read this forum about Dell taking over Alienware and i read up on the Alienware M17X, i have natural concerns with whats going to happen with the XPS gaming brand now that Dell have taken over Alienware to be its gaming division.
1. What sort of XPS customer care will i get in the future now that Dell seems to be putting most of its gaming resources into Alienware, will Dell carry on to manufacture parts for the XPS M1730 in the future just incase something goes wrong and how long for ?
2. If you had the choice to buy at this present time would it be an XPS M1730 or would you save up and spend a bit extra on the Alienware M17X, i want to get it right and to have no regrets.
Dell M17x R3 :: Freezes Up Every Few Seconds
Mar 4, 2013It freezes up every few seconds and resumes after another few seconds. This happens when I am gamming. I can move my cursor when it freezed, the audio also gets stuck.
I've tried all the Dell PC Diagnostics, and didnt find anything wrong. I fresh reinstalled my system, scaned virus and malwares, update my drivers, still problem remains. I think it's my video card might have phyiscal damage cause I move the huge ass laptop a lot, but I am not sure.
I had installed an new ssd 2 weeks ago in module 1, but I had no problem until yesterday.

Dell :: Precision M6400 Or Alienware M17x
Jul 30, 2009Ive been hunting around for a laptop for a couple of months now and ive still not decided what to get lol, i was initially drawn to the M17x but here in the uk we seem to be paying well over the odds for one compared to the US.
I was looking on ebay earlier and i came across a couple of Dell Precision M6400 laptops with what looks like a huge spec for a decent price, they seemed to offer more value than the M17x at their respective prices.
Now what i need to know is what is the difference between a Precision M6400 and a Precision M6400 Covet ?
How well regarded is a Precision M6400, is it known as a gaming laptop as ive not come across them before.
This is the spec i was looking at, how would this compare against an M17x, how well regarded is the processor and graphics card and the spec in general? ...
Dell Alienware M17x :: Can't Install Webcam?
Apr 25, 2013When I got my latop, Alienware m17x all the software was on it and working. I tried to instal win xp 64 on it as I don't like anything else, but since dell don't make any drivers for win xp 64 on the m17x r4, I simply couldn't have the software I wanted.
I returned back to win 8 and everything installed except my web cam...
 Your diagnostics software is ok, for checking my cpu speed etc, but your suggested drivers for my system does not say anything about my web cam, can I have a link and maybe the activation code I know my service tag.
Dell Alienware M17x :: Locks Up A Lot On Occasions
Jun 5, 2010I've had my M17x since last September and while I've come to accept the fact that it locks up on occassion, lately it's been getting rather ridiculous. Today alone I have had to do 6 forced reboots because of lock ups. It's pretty much a given that the machine will completely lock up around 100% CPU usage, but outside of that it can just happen randomly as well. This is particularily annoying if I'm doing a task that does put some stress on the CPU, there's maybe a slim chance I'll get to actually finish it before it all freezes.

Apr 26, 2013i have a problem. a few months ago my dell warranty for my alienware has expired. now all of a sudden, the computer crashed and refuses to turn on again. first it restartet and asked my if i want to strt windows normal or safe mode. i entered normal, as i thought it was jus a crash. it showed the start screen, than all lights went off. no matter what i do, it will not start. hitting the power button, however, makes a very short sound, as if it starts reading from HDD but than nothing. took battery off and waited. back on... nothing.
prior to that it showed a blue screen like it did before, when HDD was useless and had to be replaced september last year. sure the warranty of the computer itself is expired, but i still have a warranty for the new HDD. however, the service tag of the notebook says i can not contact e-mail support, because i have no warranty anymore. i can not choose anything that can change that. i fear the HDD is gone again, which i can have replaced, as it still has warranty, but i can ask no one at support, as they assume i have no warranty left.

Mar 14, 2013I Just had my Alienware m17x R4 for 2 days and the  AC adapter doesn't works. Yesterday it was ok, but today it's dead. It's not passing electricity to the laptop, in fact the light in the cable is off.

Feb 27, 2013I have a Alienware M17x R3, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit that uses DDR3 PC3-10600 1333MHz. I have 4 2GB sticks of RAM. I've actually found myself using programs that max 8GBs out. So I bought my self 4 sticks of 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10666 1333MHz RAM.
For some reason my system doesn't want to accept the new memory. The BIOS sees that i have the correct RAM in each slot, but windows never actually starts up It'll either just get to the system loading screen, then shut off and automatically come back on and just keep doing that. Other times, i'll get a blue screen that just flashes for a second and shutdown halfway (The lights stay on, but nothing happens). I've just tried two sticks of RAM at a time and still nothing happens. I've called Dell support, and they said it should work just fine.

Mar 7, 2013My laptop is an alienware m17x r2, It have been 2 years Since I've bought it, my laptop shuts down after few minutes playing with any game.. And I've Dusted it off many time  and it doesn't overheat, I've send it back to my after sales service twice. The first days, it was working like it should, I could play normally.. but Few days after, the problem come back..It is Working for everything! Except For the games.

Mar 20, 2013I was updating my bios last night after reinstalling windows downloaded all the drivers that dell recommend fir Alienware M17X R3.everything when great until the bios! burned the bios drivers on cd restartet laptop and bios updating started and when it was done it said i could turn off my computer. so i did! no it wont start i cant see anything on screen only 8 beep! i read around on the internet and i understand that this is a video card problem?i tried to connect it to another monitor and press fn f6  when i turn it on but it didn't work.

Oct 22, 2011My alienware computer could handle any game no problem a week ago or so but now every game i play is extremely choppy and the frame rate is around 10 on most games. Is there any reason for this or anything i can do to fix it? I've tryed restoring my computer to its factory state and i have updated everything in windows update. I have also got rid of unwanted start programs in msconfig and I have also used task manager to clear any processes that i do not need running. It also seems that my computer usage is around 80% or more when playing a game now and maybe it gets to 100% and then lags?

Jul 22, 2008I have been doing some heavy 3D graphics work and found that if I turn off all the visual cr@p, it makes the machine run about twice as fast on these intensive processes.
I have been wanting to run another piece of 3D software that is not Vista compatible (Autodesk AliasStudio) and after I installed it, discovered it definitely doesn't run on Vista.
I don't see any dis-advantage to downgrading to XP. I have a spare copy (XP Pro Full OEM) laying around that I had recently loaded on the dead laptop my M1530 replaced. Legit serial and everything.
So do I lose anything by going back to XP? I'm mostly running 2D and 3D apps and occasionally games. XP could only improve performance, correct? Is there anything in Vista that makes it worth keeping?

May 7, 2010After seeing the release specs of the new envy 17 My mind is very torn on if I should sell my current setup (see sig below) and get the envy 17. I love the dx 11 supporting gddr5 ati card but I wonder how much performance I will lose over dual GTX 280m's? I also love the eyefinity support and the USB 3.0 support. Is it hard to adjust from a 1920 x 1200 to a 1920 x 1080?
I am basically looking for some pro's and cons between the two systems. I am also curious what my current system would possibly sell for?
Dell :: Up And Downgrading Your 1645 BIOS
Jan 14, 2010After a development version of the BIOS for the Studio XPS 1645 turned up, some people were concerned about reverting back to an older BIOS after flashing the X29 version. To solve this problem I extracted the WinPhlash utility from Dell's BIOS package and modified the settings.
Now you have several options:
- Simply backup your existing BIUOS
- Upgrade to any version you like
- Downgrade to any version you like
I compiled a package that contains the following BIOS versions:
A01, A02, A03, X29 and A05, A07, A08
This is as far as I know the order in which they were released. The X29 version was never officially released.
Just to be clear: I did not change anything to the actual BIOS files, just to the WinPhlash program settings. These are original, untouched Dell BIOS files, and the same program Dell uses to force-flash your laptop. I just changed a few settings (allowing us a choice of options).
Disclaimer:
I cannot and will not assume responibility of somehow your laptop is bricked during the flashing process. This can happen with Dells own updat packages as well. I myself have used the tool in my package, and others have too, with success. This is however no guarantee for succes.
Please also note that I do not have either a 1647 or a 1340, so I cannot test these files. The theory behind updating the BIOS is the same for all these machines, and the 1340 packages appear to use the same WinPlash64 tool.
The packages can be found here:
20100327_Dell_Studio_XPS_Bios_Tools.zip This package contains the flash tools and the crisis recovery bits.
I have put the different BIOSes in their own packages:
20100327_SXPS_1645_BIOS.zip contains the BIOS files for the 1645, including the latest A08.
20100327_SXPS_1647_BIOS.zip contains the BIOS files for the 1647, including the latest A05.
20100327_SXPS_1340_BIOS.zip contains the BIOS files for the 1340, including the latest A11. The BIOS files for the 1340 seem to be smaller (about 2Mb vs 5Mb) than the 1645/1647 files.
UPDATE: I added the A06 version to the package. Also included Andrew's crisis recovery kit (see this thread for details). I have moved the package to my own server.

Dell :: Downgrading E6500 For Less Fan Noise
Nov 30, 2008The fan starts after a few minutes when the machine has booted. The fan will start even if I only run simple HTML-webpages etc. Afterwards it never stops but keeps running relatively fast (and noisy).
My current config is:
* P8600(2.40,1066MHz,3MB)
* NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M
* 250GB serial ATA HDD 7200RPM (Free Fall Sensor) (Seagate ST9250421ASG)
* Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/b/g/n 3X3) 1/2 MiniCard
* Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth
* Primary 6-cell 54W/HR LI-ION
* 15.4in Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440x900) with LED backlit
* Windows Vista Ultimate to XP Pro SP3 Downgrade SP1 with XP SP3
(Running XP currently on the machine)
Since I don't play games much and generally don't run 3D-software it was maybe a mistake to buy the E6500 with the dedicated NVIDIA-card, but I figured it was a nice feature to have in the future if I needed it.
I've tried various software to reduce the fan noise without much luck. Currently I'm considering returning the E6500 for a downgraded version without the NVIDIA-card, a lower clocked CPU and a slower HDD.
I'm considering:
* P8400(2.26,1066MHz,3MB)
* 250GB serial ATA HDD 5400RPM
* Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
1) Does anyone for sure know if the fan will run slower or maybe not at all if the E6500 is equiped with the Intel X4500HD instead of the Quadro NVS 160M when I surf webpages etc. and don't run GPU-intense software?
2) Will the fan run slower with a 2.26 GHz P8400 instead of a 2.40 GHz P8600?
3) Will a 5200 RPM HDD generally generate less heat in the system vs. a 7200 RPM HDD? (and hence generate less fan noise?)
4) I would really like to know how the BIOS determines how fast the fan should run? Is it dertermined from the overall system-temperature? The CPU-temp? or the GPU-temp? HDD-temp? Maybe an average of these?
Right now the fan has run relatively fast (docked) for about an hour. According to PC Wizard 2008 the temperatures are:
- ACPI Thermal Zone: 31.5 Celcius
- Core 1: 25 C
- Core 2: 26 C
- GPU: 49 C
- HDD: 38 C
- Processor(s) activity: 1-3%
I have the fan-noise issue whenever the machine is docked or not. I like the E-port Plus very much, a digital S/PDIF-audio out would have been nice though. I hope I can use the E-port Plus with the integrated Intel X4500HD if I decide to downgrade. Dual-view is a must for me.
5) I'm not sure if DELL at all will exchange my E6500 for a downgraded version. Does anyone have experience returning DELLs when asking for a downgrade? My argument is to much noise from the fan to my taste, but I don't think DELL will buy this if there's no problem with the machine, so I probably will have to pay for the return of the first machine as well as freight for the new machine. It's quite expensive here in Denmark. Returns cost about $125 and Dell will pick up the machine, the only way to return here afaik. I have 3 year International Next Business Day On-site Response, but probably of not much use if the machine isn't broken or don't need repair.
I nice side-effect from downgrading to a slower system though, will be longer battery-life, but my ultimate goal is less noise.

Dec 3, 2014I have a M17x R3 laptop since a few years. A few weeks ago I sent it to the shop to have a SSD installed and have Win7 reinstalled (Windows Explorer kept crashing all the time and I wasnt able to format for some reason). When it got back from the shop, I realized a problem that was not there before.
There are 2 horizontal lines, one at the top and one at the bottom of my screen that keep flickering. They dont appear when I'm on the desktop or playing games, only when I have a program running (iTunes, Steam, DivX, etc) in fullscreen.Â

Windows 7 64 bit
AMD Radeon HDÂ 6870M (I also have Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 in my display drivers. Just noticed that the version for both is 9.3.0)
6GB RAM
Dont know if it has anything to do with this, but when I got my laptop back I tried to install Cataclyst Control Center and it messed up my graphics bad, I could only run 640x480 and the only way to fix this was to uninstall CCC.
Dell :: Downgrading From Vista64 To XP32/64 For Dummies
Sep 21, 2009My dell studio 1555 has finally arrived with Vista Home SP1 64 bit and I'm absolutely hating it. I haven't installed crap on it and 1.5GB of my 4GB ram always remains under use. Don't know about the processor but that too I bet isn't loving the vista experience. Windows 7 is an option but prefer XP. I am pretty much sure XP will run faster and games will perform better eventually.
THE PROBLEM: I have NO F'ING CLUE WHERE TO BEGIN. I want to remove Vista completely and install XP. Is there a XP64 bit version? Because I hear downgrading to 32bit will cause driver issues. I've formatted/removed and re-installed XP on a laptop million times before but never have I went from 64 to 32 bit.. Is it possible? Could someone please show me a tutorial on how to get that done?

Mar 11, 2009my laptop is an Acer I assumed I could just drop the question here. So, I got an Extensa 4630-4922 and it comes with -sigh- Vista. You all know how problematic is Vista, and just the UAC ticks me off to the point of smashing the laptop on the floor. After thinking about it for a while I made up my mind and decided to downgrade to XP. Now, the thing is that I have no idea how to do it. I downloaded a copy of XP off the internet and I don't know what to do with it, and most importantly I don't know where to get the necessary drivers to make XP function. So, I just want to know if there is any guide, preferably a step-by-step one, that can guide me through the installation and set-up of XP on my laptop?

Can he downgrade the OS to Windows 7(64Bit)? as he has some issues with certain software, which according to the developers won't work on Windows 8. Will the warranty be void if the system is formatted and Windows 7 is installed. Is there any option to go in for a dual boot with Windows 8 and Windows 7. As per the support center, they do not recommend dual booting on a Windows 8 system.

Sep 12, 2009I've just got an Aspire 7735z, which came with Vista. I plan to use the machine for music software. Another machine I got a while back also had Vista and I had problems getting the software to work, so I eventually gave up and installed XP. Since then it's been working perfectly.
I planned to do the same with my 7735, but I get the BSOD when I boot with the XP disc.
The research I've done (and understand) suggests that I need the SATA drivers on the XP disc. I've spent a long time trying to find SATA drivers for the 7735z but I'm more confused than ever.
Acer :: Downgrading- Extensa 5620
Dec 7, 2009i have been trying to downgrade my extensa 5620 from vista to XP. i already formated my drive but as soon as XP installer would not find my drive i saw somethign wrong. win XP does not have the drivers for SATA HD :S i dont know if win XP SP3 has them any way.
i tried using nlite to create an XP CD with this driver integrated.
i can find the drivers on acer website but nlite needs an .inf to add the driver! the driver files i download dont include this file extension and include a setup file.
