Dell :: E6400 + Windows 7 X64 + Hibernate = Not Reliable
Nov 7, 2009
E6400
Windows 7 x64 RTM from TechNet
Latest BIOS, DCP drivers, etc
Not sure if anyone else is running into this but I will put my computer into hibernate by closing the lid and toss it in my bag. Works for about 5-7 hibernates and then sometimes it will look like it is hibernating, but the machine never turns off. I open the lid and see that the keyboard backlight is on and the num lock or caps lock will go on and off, but I can't get the screen back. I can only hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then restart.

I just reformatted my Latitude XT with Windows 7 and it won't automatically go into hibernation as per my power settings.
I have it configured so that it will first go into sleep mode after being idle or closing the lid and then go into..............................

Just got off the phone with XPS Support.. Not too happy.
I was on my computer earlier, and it froze. Left it alone for 20 mins before having to reboot. The HDD light was Stuck on. Got stuck on the windows start, once again with the HDD light on. Tried the startup repair, same thing.
Thought something in Windows mightve gotten screwed, so I tried launching the Dell Recovery. Nope, got same thing, hdd light stuck on.
Ok, thought it mightve screwed up the recovery partition, so I toss in the Dell windows 7 cd. Got stuck on the setup is starting with the hdd light on.
After reading the m1340 hdd light on thread, I put in my retail windows 7 cd. Got stuck at the same place, so I broke down and called support.
The rep had me do a pre boot assessment. Within 10 secs of launching it, my computer is beeping and flashing the keys indicating a failed hard drive. Even tho I can see it in the BIOs
Just ing great.
Is it really unreasonable to just get a computer that just works? I've had this computer for less than a month and have babied it. It came out of the packaging and has lived on my desk since.
Then, to top it off, my "next business day" onsite repair means the tech (which makes no sense, they won't ship it to me even tho I'm DCSE) will get the part in 2-3 days, arrange a time 3-5 days after that.

Need a new laptop for work and am considering the m1330. Heard a lot of stories about it being unreliable. But those reviews were quite some time ago. I'm wondering if the current units are still problematic.
I'm concerned mostly with build quality and reliability. I would also like a unit with good display and sound. I'm a weapons designer/engineer by trade.

I have installed Windows 8.1 on my R61 and have a problem with sleep/hibernate. It never goes to this state, iI should stead LCD switch off but computer still runs. The only way to get back is switch off power and restart.
If I manually disable wireless driver before pressing sleep, then it goes to sleep state successfully. Which driver i should use.

Running on MBP's or Pros?
I'd be interested in the noise in comparison to e.g. the Pro, and how reliable the iSCSI initiator is.

I have been an avid HP user for quite some time in the recent years. Now graduated from HS, I'm off to the University in search of a reliable notebook. I have looked everywhere!
HP, Dell, Apple, Lenovo, Newegg, eBay, and now Sony. Out of all these, what makes Sony a brand I can truly consider to be my trustee for 4 more years?
Some questions to consider:Has the Sony brand kept up to its name? (i.e-build quality)Customer Support for the Vaio, how would you rate it? Are they quick, responsive, and ideal to the typical consumer who might experience problems from time to time?Updates, drivers, and firmware-are they constant?
By quick glance, Sony is the Apple's PC. The company is for style, easy user experience, and simplicity, all with the love for Windows. Ultimately, can you tell me if and why Sony is reliable to purchase from?

what would you recommend as a good and reliable external hard drive that I could use with Time Machine.
What do you think of this:
Iomega eGo Portable 500 GB External hard drive - 800Mbps(FireWire800)/400Mbps(FireWire)/480Mbps(Hi-Sp.USB)
Also, from friends I know I've heard only complains about external hard drives - problems with reliability etc. Has anything changed in this regard in recently?
Lastly, what is your experience with Time Machine? How much can I trust it?

I am trying Windows 7 on my Latitude E6400, and I am having two a little issue for the system.
First issue is despite enabling advance performance for the drive under Device manager, Windows 7 gives me score or 2.0, than in Vista the score is significantly higher in the 5.0 range. My HDD is the Hitachi 5400RPM 160GB.
Second issue is, I don't know what I missed when installing the drivers/software, but I don't have the on-screen volume control. But the ambient light sensor, brightness level and keyboard backlit mode, does appear.

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my e6400 with p9500, 256mb graphics, 4gb ram and 256gb SSD. First, 7 BLOWS Vista to shreds regarding speed. It is unreal how clean and efficient it is. My first question is in the power settings, high performance is gone. Anyone know why? Also, the Windows Performance Rating shows the following:
Processor: 6.1
RAM: 6.1
Graphics: 3.4
Gaming Graphics: 5.3
Primary HD: 6.9
The scoring goes up to 7.9. Do you guys think those are low? I'm surprised gaming graphics are higher than Aero graphics and that the hard disk is only a 6.9 and the processor is only 6.1.

I'm running Windows 2008 64 bit on Dell Latitude e6400. Most everything works. The only issue is the Ethernet Gigabit adapter. The Vista 64 bit driver exists stating that no hardware was found. Dell supports says this laptop was specifically designed for Vista, no Win 2008 support if provided.

I just was wondering what some of you are getting in Windows 7 Index Rating.
I was having issues getting VS 2008 to work without going crazy with SearchIndexer.exe and re-installed 7 just now. Somehow my score is now a 4.1, using the same drivers ....

Anyone got the new 64 bit Windows 7 driver (not the Vista driver) for 5530 WWAN card on E6400 working?.
The driver installed fine on my E6400 (running 64 bit Windows 7), but Wireless Manager (downloaded from Sony Ericsson website) stopped working saying it can't find any wireless device (probably because it can't recognize the new driver)..
Then I went to get Control Point Connection Manager and noticed that there's none for Windows 7. So how do you use the WWAN card without a client?..

I have the following problem: I set up an Administrator Account with password security and then add a Dell Security with fingerpint security. Now, I cannot access the Windows. The problem is the TPM cannot be connected or something like that. The scan says it accepts the scanned finger, and password is also Ok. How can I disable secure access or reset password, disable fingerprint control, etc. In BIOS I do not find any possibility to disable fingerpint but TPM activation/deactivation is there.

Fresh load of Windows 7 x64 7229 and when I put my machine into standby the battery seems to drain incredibly fast....almost like it is on. I will standby the machine before I go to bed and in the morning it's dead with 0% battery.
I used to do the same thing with my D630 and in the morning I would have 85% or so on the equivilant 6 cell battery. Is there something I am missing.

I sucessfully installed windows 2003 server on Dell Latitude E6400. All the devices are working fine now. I would like to share with you my experience as below:
1. Suppose you have successfully installed Windows 2003 on Dell E6400: there are many topics instruct how to ingergrate the SATA controller driver to windows installer using nlite. I will not repeat this.
2. You MUST know exactly what the device model in your machine: harddrive, network card, wireless card, video card. I get this information because i have installed windows Vista on this machine before .....

So I just had Windows 7 reinstalled as my harddrive died. But after the reinstall, Windows 7 only detects my laptops native resolution (recommended resolution) as 1280x800.
I know this laptop has the 1440x900 display, I have coworkers with the same laptop and their display shows the "recommended" is 1440x900, and I know that was the case before I lost my drive and got a new one with a reinstall.
This laptop has the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M adapter, and I have the latest driver for this from NVIDIA.
Why does windows think my native resolution is 1280x800. I can use the NVIDIA driver to force it to go to 1440x900, which works. I was just wondering why it is doing this. Is there some inf package that I need from Dell?

First of all i want to say i have a dell xps 1530, Vista.
Recentrly ive reinstalled vista and now i have something strange going on.
When i got to start (i dont use button) and click on hibernate, notebook save data and when he is about to shut down, it just starts all over, the data doesnt go loss, so it starts the same as i did leave it in hibernate.
The strange thing is that, when i after this try to shut down it restarts again, so the only thing left to do for me to push the button so it just manualy shuts down.
One more thing, when i start again, and i direcly try to hibernate or shut down then it does his job, everything happens as it should be.

It seems that randomly, after awaking from hibernation, my touchpad becomes unresponsive and my keyboard speed settings are reset. This is typically solved by restarting the computer.

I put my Inspiron 9300 into hibernate this morning, tried to wake it back up and all I'm getting aftet the Dell logo and status bar (POST) is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left corner.
When I hit the Play button on the front of the notebook, it brings up the Dell Media Direct logo screen, but nothing happens.
When I boot with my XP CD and go to the recovery console, I can see the hard drive and files, though I can't access most folders because I get an Access Denied message.
I tried booting from my flash drive, but when I do, the flash drive is recognized as the c: drive and the hard drive isn't listed.
I also tried unplugging my laptop and battery and held down the power button for a few minutes to discharge any electricity. No luck.
