I have a business laptop (Precision M4400), how do I know if my warranty is transferable or not? If it is, what is the process of transferring the ownership to someone else?
View 9 RepliesI have the chance to buy a Dell XPS M1730 from someone, they have given me the service tag and it says it was shipped on the 07/05/2009 and the warranty runs until 06/05/2010.
If i bought this laptop would the warranty be fully transferable to me, is it straight forward to change over a warranty with Dell ?
I did some searching, but didn't see any answers for a question I have. I am thinking about buying a Dell Lattitude on Ebay that has some warranty left as well as some completecare left.
Does anyone know exactly how the warranty transfer process works?
The seller has stated that he isn't willing to help with a warranty transfer but that the service tag shows that the machine has some warranty left. Do I need his help to transfer the warranty or can I do it unilaterally myself?
I just bought a used dell laptop from a dealer, it wasn't sold with a warranty, but looking up the service tag, I found that there's 6 months left on the warranty.
I don't have the original owner's details, but has anyone had any luck getting Dell to transfer registration in these circumstances? - I understand that they might be cautious, but I'd guess they would have a list of reported stolen tag #'s to check against to prevent crims doing this.
I'd like to get the tag changed so that I can order OS media, but the warranty would be a bonus if it's possible.
I had a question regarding the ownership transfer of a Dell e1705 laptop I recently purchased off eBay. When I went online to transfer the ownership on Dell's website,
I saw that the original owner's name was required. (I know at some point in the past only the service tag and express service code were required) Apparently, the person I bought the laptop from is not the original owner since his name did not match the one on record for the computer.
I am looking to sell my XPS M1530. I was just wondering if any of you could tell me how the process of transferring the warranty goes. Step by step instructions would be nice.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI contacted Dell yesterday morning via chat because my laptop has started crashing when playing fallout 3/wow, again... This time I remained persistent that I did not want another defective new motherboard with a bad 8600m GPU in it, installed for me. I explained that it’s not a matter of IF the replacement will fail, but WHEN. I was persistent that I wanted a better solution than the motherboard swap. I asked to be transferred to the agent’s supervisor.
When transferred I was told that they "redesigned" the motherboard/GPU so this issue was no longer occurring. I explained to the supervisor how he must have his facts wrong because that is not true. I was eventually offered a warranty replacement. It only took an hour of being firm but polite. I was told it would take 1 week to get an order number from the supervisor and I could reference the chat log number if I had any questions.
After I got off the chat, I realized that I forgot to get the dispatch number. Today I went back into chat to get my dispatch number and asked again when I have an order number for my warranty exchange. Today I was told 2-3 weeks for the order number and 4-5+ weeks to actually get the new system. The agents explained that the "We (dell) are seeing a huge backlog in our warehouse and that is the reason we are not committing on a earlier date." I asked why I was told 1 week the day before but I was only apologized to for being miss-informed.
Currently I feel like i am trapped and dell doesn't care about me as a customer, and that is a shame. I am going to be updating this thread as I progress through this process for a couple of reasons. The main reason is I hope that this will help me keep my insanity in check when dealing with the frustrations of spending my money for my "cool" xps 1530 with 4 year complete care warranty that was almost broke more than it worked. It would often take dell 2-3 weeks to get a tech out with the correct part to fix my laptop when it had issues. The second reason it to just document in one central location this process. Finally maybe I can help pass some people’s time out there by letting reading about my story :-)
In conclusion, I am grateful that I was approved for a warranty replacement, and hope that everyone else out there who has “dealt” with dell’s bs regarding the 1530/1330 will get the same result. It just sucks the wait it looking to be about 1.5 months, lol :-)
I recently got a dv7 (17.3") and I've been looking around for a good notebook cooler. The current cooler is not for this size and was wondering for any options available out there.
I've heard of the the Zalman-NC2000 but I'd have to "reposition" it to use it's capabilities. My next option would be the "NZXT Cryo LX". I am considering getting this one but would like to have other alternatives before I commit to it.
I use this laptop for gaming and photo/video editing so portability would be a plus.
Also, any good messenger bags for my lappy? I'll need space for my cooler and wacom tablet. I've been looking around for a long time as this and some were just a tad "tight" fitting in.
I am very happy with my new Acer 1810TZ. I have installed all my favourite software and set it up exactly how I want it. I split the drive in two, so I have a C drive with Windows 7 and all the software, and no data. All my data is on D: and that drive is not an issue, I have no trouble backing up my data.
I now want to do a reliable backup of the system that will cover two situations:
1. Drive C gets corrupted somehow. Unlikely but I want to be able to simply put back Windows and all the software as it is now.
2. Hard disk fails. I put in a new one and want to set up drive C exactly as it is now.
I use Acronis and I know with a desktop how to so this. I simply use Acronis to make a file containing the C drive, and store it on a big USB drive. If the worst happens I can use the Acronis boot disk and put drive C back.
But the Acer has a complication. The drive starts with a 12 GB recovery partition, followed by a 100MB partition. In my case 1 above, it is easy, I simply restore my backup over C: and all is OK.
But what about case 2, where I have a new drive. I don't really need the recovery partition, but I suspect that if I use the simplest method, and simply restore drive C: as the first partition, it may not work, i.e. not boot? (method A)
Should I make partition backups of the two hidden partitions and then restore those as well as C:? (method B)
Would either method work? Most importantly would the machine boot? What else should I be doing? I'm sure many people muct have tackled this since Acer machines seem to work this way? Please tell me what is the recommended solution? Are you using Acronis?
I just bought an apple Time Capsule and started using it last night, router and switch works great, but can I use that as an external harddrive, because I tried to transfer files from my laptop to time capsule but it always gives me errors saying that the device is disconnected and whatnot. Anyone got any words on how to use it as an external harddrive freely? By the way, I use it on my Windows 7.

I did have the heatsink replaced a few times as well as the motherboard due to overheating and not knowing exactly what the problem was, so it was more just a precautionary measure.
Eventually I found out that it was just due to the thermal paste needing replacement to lower the temps. So actually I haven't had any hardware problems at all.
Recently though I was tempted to buy the Asus G51VX-RX05 due to its cheap price tag and its slick look and ended up buying one. The hardware improvements that affect performance include:

Like if your laptop is replaced through complete care you know an order number shows up for a while in your account can you just take that and submit it to squaretrade to get a warranty from them?

Up till now, I have always bought Dell notebooks mainly for their overseas business warranties. Received it over the weekend and got it up and running. Though not as stylishly groundbreaking as some, it has a nice sleek, cool look.
It is a business laptop afterall. I will agree with others on the speakers, pretty poor, even for a business laptop. But, other features are nice.... backlit keyboard, screen, keyboard layout/size

When it's turned off and charging, the lights on the hinge of the screen will go off, meaning it's fully charged, but it's only charged to about 90% when I turn it on.
I'm assuming this is happening because the battery is not calibrated with the BIOS correctly..
I'm looking to buy one of these machines to replace my 2 year old M90 (which I upgraded to full spec, 2500fx, 4gb, fastest available fitting processor).
Essentially both machines have X9000, 4gb RAM, 8xDVD. The 6300 has 200gb HD, and a 512mb 3600fx card, the 1730 has 2x160gb and dual sli 8800gtx. The M6300 is about £100 less ($200).
I'm struggling to decide :- I love the screen and design of my M90 (the glossy screen on the M1730 looks nasty to me), but I'd imagine the 1730 would outperform the M6300 quite substantially (although my M90 actually drew with if not beat its XPS sibling on several games). The M90 was also built fantastically well....I'm not sure about the 1730 never having seen one.
I have a Dell XPS M1530 ,I am fixing for someone, originally with a Microsoft Windows Vista but it stopped working(no further info on how)Â so I tried to install Windows 7(Multiple times(4)) and all it does is stack upon itself (When booting it shows Windows 7, Windows 7,Windows 7, Windows 7,Windows Vista). When installing it goes through but stops on the reboot, I did disconnect the USB, but it gets "frozen" on Starting Windows (on reboot of installation). Safemode stops at system32driversdisk.sys.

After weeks of surfing the net to get the best bang for buck I got myself a brand new m1730 with sli 9800m gt, 6gb ram, a 2,5Ghz duo, blu ray, etc... for just 1839€. Believe me this is very cheap for this laptop in Belgium.
I also game on my Imac (which I bought to do mostly Lightwave and 3d coat) from 2008 with a 8800gs (in reality a 8800m gt) and 3,06 ghz core2duo .....

I have had a major problem with my M1710 having a fit when running on batteries!
theres a slight flicker when running aero on vista, but the computer has a major fit when running Studio 11 from pinnacle.
have had a great deal of discusion with dell and Tech support with out success.
they suggested new mother board and 7950gtx card!
anyway through reading alot of posts on the forum i tried increasing the clock speeds of the 2d setting on the graphics card
the core is now set at 150 and memory 200
i tried it at 100/150 as suggested on another post.
However 150/200 has created significant performance increase when editting on pinncle studio 11! and vista areo runs smooth as silk
Increasing the Clock speeds cures the flickering problem!
I'm another one of those waiting for an 8800M GTX (Dell PN XM888) replacement...
Replacement was initiated by Dell in early September, was told backorder until September 21. On September 21, backorder was pushed to October 5...
I've made a bit of noise and I'm at the "Consumer Escalation" level, but I know there's the "Executive Escalation" level as well. At this point, I've got a Service Call number for a system replacement, but it's showing no activity....
