Dell Inspiron 1545 :: Overheating - Fan Literally Stopped Spinning
Sep 9, 2012
I have had a Dell Inspiron 1545 For 3 years now and Last year the motherboard failed so i had that replaced. 3 of my battery chargers have broken. My Battery Lasts a couple of seconds, Left Mouse stuck in and wont work sometimes. But the main problem is overheating recently the fan literally stopped spinning, it made some weird sounds like clashing and now it doesn't spin AT ALL. My Laptop lasts 30 minutes before overheating and turning off. Another Problem is my wireless networks!?? Sometimes my wireless networks disappear they literally disappear! it cant detect wireless signals so i have to restart my computer to fix it!

My wife's Inspiron 1545 from late 2008 is having a new issue wherein it is randomly shutting off but not due to heat. Â The computer will shut off when not connected to AC power randomly. Â Sometimes it will last 10 minutes, other time 40. Â What's odd the is computer reads anywhere from 50% - 85% battery life left. Â
I'm certain it's not overheating because it doesn't get hot. Â Also,I disassembled rear cover and reset the CPU cooler with new thermal paste as a precaution yet the problem persists.
I ran the boot hardware diagnostic test all the way through with no errors. Â The harddrive has no audible clicking/crunching which usually indicates an HDD headed south.

I have a inspiron 1545 laptop, and every now and then randomly it turns itself off. I think it's overheating, but don't know how to adjust the fan speeds (if you can) and i took the back off and cleaned round the fan, so it's not blocked up. It might be something else causing it to turn off i'm not too sure.

The touchpad on my dell inspiron 1545 has stopped working for no apparent reason. The left and right buttons still work. An external mouse works and I was able to check my touchpad settings using it, the touchpad settings all appear to be in order and I verified it was enabled. I can't understand why the touchpad suddenly stopped working...
I'm using Windows Vista.

I bought my Inspiron over the telephone direct from Dell about two years back on the strength of my satisfaction with a Dell PC some five years earlier. However I have been so disappointed with it and wish I'd bought a cheapy somewhere. It continually locks up with the hard drive working away on goodness knows what - this can last from a few minutes to leaving it running all night and it will still be locked in the morning - the cursor actually still moves and you can move between open pages but that's it. I wrote three recorded delivery letters to Dell which were ignored.Â
On line they run through a test and declare it is all operating fine, 'that's it', no problem! I paid £50 for a professional to look at it and he suggested we reload the software. This was supposed to be held in a seperate protected part of the hard drive (as it did not come with software discs) which, after talking to his contact at Dell, he confirmed didn't exist! To cut my losses he arranged for me to buy, more money, a software disc from Dell that he later re-installed for me. The result was absolutely no improvement. I know a few computer 'fans' who have all said 'I'll have a look at it' but all have been baffled. So I have continued to suffer this appauling performance that can lock up sometimes every couple of hours, sometimes every couple of minutes, it can even be locked when I first start it and it then merrily plays with itself for as long as it fancies.Â

I just got a Dell Inspiron 14 7000 series (Inspiron 7447). Was using an Acer before this. My question is about the fan. Its a brand new laptop and I haven't installed anything yet. The fan is fast for no reason and doesnt stop spinning. Is this normal for a gaming laptop? I am not running anything program at all.

I've had this laptop for about 7 months now and it's progressively running hotter and hotter while I game. I now have the back of the laptop propped up with some books so that there's more air circulation underneath it, but even so I will often hit 96 degrees Celsius when playing games such as Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Farcry, and World of Warcraft.
I will admit that I force clock the cpu to maintain a core clock of 1.60 GHz. If I don't force clock it it will just drop my cpu clock down to 800 MHz and sit there giving me 10 fps and lower in any game. My video card (8600m gt) runs fine and cool so there's no problems there .....

I got a XPS M1730 with Dual 9800GT.
It is a great computer and I love it.
However, When I run HWmonitor, I get 73-76F at idle. And It has been running very hot..
I had this laptop for about a week and it's always like that.
So, I looked underneath the laptop and seems like the two GPU fans are not spinning at all.
Is this normal or something wrong with my unit?
Do I have to open it up and check the fan cable? Or is it something wrong with the bios? Only thing I did to this laptop is update the driver to nvidia's 185.85
Back of the laptop is so hot that I can't touch it with my hand..

I ordered two basic Inspiron 1545's on March 16th. $479 each on the one day special.
Dell says it will arive on April 6th. Does Dell usually take this long to deliver?
Both have Dual Core Pentiums. Can they be upgraded to Core 2 Duo later? Are the CPU's soldered on the main board?
Ram is limited to four gigabytes, even though the laptop uses a 64-bit CPU. Is this something that might be fixed in a future BIOS upgrade?
Is there any way to upgrade the onboard graphics? I found an ExpressCard chasis that has PCI express slots, but it costs over $700. I could build a PC for less than that. Do I have any other options?

I just looked at the pictures and specs of the new Inspiron 1525 replacement, 1545, and I couldn't believe what I have read. No HDMI port, no firewire port, only 3 USB ports, no modem, no eSATA. Also, it is 15.6" 16:9 screen, which is fine, if they offer higher than 1366x768. It is more like the 13" Inspiron than the old 1525 to me. I think Dell is going to re-align Inspiron as a cheap line like the HP Presario line. Dell Studio will compete with HP Pavilion.

My question is if the early 1545's came with LED's or CCFL's? I see all the 1545's now come with only LED screens.
I ask because on the 'Dell Outlet' it doesn't state if it's a LED screen or not. It just says: "15.6 WXGA Laptop Screen Display with TrueLife"

I am looking to buy a new 15" laptop. A top of the range inspiron 1545 costs £629 and the top XPS M1530 costs £849.
However, looking at the spec - the Inspiron seems to have:
> A better processor (Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz) vs Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache))
> Faster memory (4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048] Vs 4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048])

My fan on the inspiron 1545 will not stop running. The laptop is quite hot. The battery from Dell died and replaced with a third party battery and adapter which have not been working well either. Battery will not charge so it is currently attached to power source at all times with the battery in the laptop.

I got an old laptop (dell inspiron 1545). I bought it charger and installed Windows 7. then I discovered that he had a strange problem. As if the keyboard is not calibrated. I press a button and he thinks it's another key ... I thought it might be a hardware problem but when I plugged in a USB keyboard had the same problem and even when I uploaded the "virtual keyboard " on screen the problem continued ... I went to the site of DELL and the diagnosis tool indicated the computer is fine (their detection software glitch found in DVD-ROM but it really has nothing to do with it) I still tried to delete the drivers of the keyboard from the computer and reinstall but the problem remains you might know calibration software keyboard?

Hi There!
I've got the Dell 1720 Inspiron since 2 years ago.
No problems until these 2 past weeks. I use to play the NBA 2k10 with my laptop since last december, and everything goes right, but from last 2 weeks, if I play more than 3 or 4 games (15min. per game), the laptop shuts down by itself. I've checked the CPU and GPU temperatures with Everest, and with this game running they get 70-77 degrees...It's not so hot, is it?
The fan normally gets fast in short periods of time, but it's not at highest speed during the game...
I don't know how to improve the heat contro; I've update the BIOS, Graph. drivers and so...
Any ideas?
Thanks

I don't know what it is, or maybe its just the way the system works...
But basically, but something is constantly on even when I just have the laptop on with a few IE windows, you can especially feel it just to the left of the touchpad. From time to time, I will also hear the the noise coming from it and it till slow down, then start up again.
I mean, its not a big issue, but is something wrong with the laptop?
This happens when the CPU load is as low as just 5%, temperatures around 42-45 degrees Celsius.

I've noticed that the screen doesn't seem to be evenly lit. For example when I set the desktop background to black, it looks pretty black at the top of the screen, but as I look further down towards the bottom it turns almost medium gray/blue-ish.
I've tried all brightness, contrast and gamma settings with no luck.
Has anyone else seen this problem, and is it a reason for sending back the laptop? Or is this something "you get" for buying a lower-end laptop like the 1545?

I was interested in getting another hard drive caddy for a 1545 but looking on Dell's website by model # they do not even list the 1545 per se.
They have a choice for "15" which I assume will include anything across the board for the 15 "family" models so I looked in there but no parts like this.
I tried ebay and googling around, found several places that sell spare Dell parts, even called & spoke to one but it seems to me that (a) Dell doesn't sell a part like this separately, and (b) places that do sell these kinds of parts are salvaging them from old/dead PCs and since the 1545 is a fairly new model spare parts haven't really surfaced for it yet.
Am curious if folks here know of any decent places to find this kind of thing though, since I certainly could be overlooking something!
