Dell Inspiron 1545 :: Shutting Off Randomly But Isn't Overheating
Jan 18, 2015
My wife's Inspiron 1545 from late 2008 is having a new issue wherein it is randomly shutting off but not due to heat. The computer will shut off when not connected to AC power randomly. Sometimes it will last 10 minutes, other time 40. What's odd the is computer reads anywhere from 50% - 85% battery life left.
I'm certain it's not overheating because it doesn't get hot. Also,I disassembled rear cover and reset the CPU cooler with new thermal paste as a precaution yet the problem persists.
I ran the boot hardware diagnostic test all the way through with no errors. The harddrive has no audible clicking/crunching which usually indicates an HDD headed south.

My Inspiron 1545 use to randomly shuts down (direct shutdown), I think i was due to over heating because i could feel the bottom of the laptop get really hot, so i started to have the laptop elevated for better air flow, that worked for a little while but then it would have the same problem, i have not cleaned the inside of the laptop or ever opened it, but i plan to do it to see whats going on, i don't think i have a warranty on it anymore so i think will experiment, but before i do that, i wanted to know what could be the cause of this problem, my best guess is i need to clean it or replace the CPU fan.
Also, I left my laptop in the car overnight and i was really cold out, after that night, now the laptop doesn't stay on more than 2 mins.....

I have a inspiron 1545 laptop, and every now and then randomly it turns itself off. I think it's overheating, but don't know how to adjust the fan speeds (if you can) and i took the back off and cleaned round the fan, so it's not blocked up. It might be something else causing it to turn off i'm not too sure.

I have had a Dell Inspiron 1545 For 3 years now and Last year the motherboard failed so i had that replaced. 3 of my battery chargers have broken. My Battery Lasts a couple of seconds, Left Mouse stuck in and wont work sometimes. But the main problem is overheating recently the fan literally stopped spinning, it made some weird sounds like clashing and now it doesn't spin AT ALL. My Laptop lasts 30 minutes before overheating and turning off. Another Problem is my wireless networks!?? Sometimes my wireless networks disappear they literally disappear! it cant detect wireless signals so i have to restart my computer to fix it!

I don't know if I shoudl be posting this in the M4400 thread, so please accept my apologies if it should be.
I'm a proud M4400 owner, and have been for a while now. However, I just installed Win7 x64 (upgrade from Vista x64), and the first thing I did was install RMClock then undervolt it. I'm very familiar with doing this, and with overclocking/undervolting in general (my PC is a 4.5GHz Q9650!).
After undervolting it to 1.025v at the 10x multiplier I set about to do some stress testing, whilst also monitoring temps with coretemp.
I guess for temp measurements to be meaningful we need to start with Ambient temps. In my room it is probably around 13-15C (55-59F), as in too cold to sit around in a t-shirt (I'm in Austria, it's winter, and the heating isn't cranked because I like to run my computer cool!).

I use a Vaio Z (VGNZ690) which has a tendency to shut off randomly when it is unplugged, even when it has a charge left in the battery. When this happens, I'll be able to turn the computer back on, but usually it'll shut down again very soon into the boot process.
These fits of turning off usually come and go in bursts - there might be a 10 minute period in which I won't be able to get the computer to turn on, but after that it'll be fine. Additionally, the computer seems more likely to turn off when I move it (all of these shutdowns have occurred when the Vaio is operating off the battery).
I'm also pretty sure my computer isn't overheating.

I got a new Acer a few months ago and it worked fine in the beginning. In the last few weeks, it has been randomly shutting down. It does not show the normal shut down message you would see when using power button or Start Menu but just shuts off. When it comes back on, it says Windows did not shut down properly.
I seemed to have narrowed this down to when I move the screen or move the laptop.

I currently own a HP DV4 1275mx laptop. I have had it since April 2009. This is a product replacement for my DV2000 that had the bad nvidia chip and left this world. It only lasted 9 months.
Here are my issues (i do say they are eerily familiar)
Its freaking hot as a volcano. So hot that I can hardly use my touchpad mouse without it hurting my fingers. I thought I was just being paranoid when I first got it since my last one got hot and then out of nowhere just died. So, I downloaded speed fan a few months ago once it started to really worry me.
The temps range from at the lowest 65C and will get up to 105C. I called HP support right away (3 months ago) they ran BIOS updates and all of that and sent me on my merry way.
Well now it likes to just shut itself off (i'm assuming a fail safe so it doesn't blow up on me). It takes a good few minutes and at least 3 or 4 tries to get it to boot up all the way again. Called HP again, ran the same updates and some diagnostics that my computer couldn't even get through without overheating. They are having me send it in for repair...............

Just got the laptop today. Went to Windows Updates out of the box and boom, it shuts down. A LOT. I managed to get the 64 bit updates in but it keeps shutting down for the rest. System Restore doesn't seem to manner.
The bottom of the laptop is hot to the touch after 2 hours worth of idle usage spent on updating windows....
Specs
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6400
4GB (2/2) DDR2 667 SDRAM
320GB hard drive
Blu-ray Disc Drive
9600
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS
The only changes I've made is removing some annoying bloatware, but I didn't expect problems this fast and this early.
I hope this is not a heating issue because I would hesitate to get a replacement. 6930 owners...have you had this problem before. Does it get hot a lot? I hope it doesn't explode if I try to play Left 4 Dead on it.

My HP G62 Notebook PC has been overheating and shutting down all of a sudden recently. I have tried all of the recommended fixes I can find (cleaning vents, downloading bios, etc.) but to no avail. It is well ventilated and all vents are clean.

I think that it is an overheating problem considering my laptop (ONLY recently) seems to be getting very hot, to the point it needs to shut down. But this is the strange thing:
I had Windows Vista installed on this laptop (Acer Aspire 5100) earlier, and my battery almost never heated up to the point it needed to shut down, or even heat up to an extreme level.... But now that I have downgraded to Windows XP SP2, it seems to shut down MUCH more often. But I did find one thing of concern. Around the same time my laptop started shutting down, I installed an application called 'Game Speed Changer' and that whenever I had used it, it slowed my computer down immensely, and then when I went to close it, the BSOD would appear. Every time.

I'm in the repair field and I've got a customer's Aspire 5520 that was brought in for overheating. The machine had gone to Iraq, and the customer has indoor dogs..so yes, the fins on the heat pipe were very clogged. Got it all cleaned out, and the machine is still shutting itself off after between 10 minutes and 30 seconds of use.
Now, the machine isn't overheating. SpeedFan and a few other CPU temp utilities are showing the CPU to be around 45*c when the machine is randomly shutting down. 45c is not what I'd consider hot for a Turion x2.
It's not a RAM issue, I've replaced the CPU and am getting the same symptoms.

I've bought the Lenovo Y560 laptop ~1.5 years ago and I've been very satisfied with its performace overall, but I've recently noticed, it overheats and shuts down when playing newer games (doesnt appear in games like WoW or LoL or similar low end system req games). And we all know why we bought such a high performance machine (and it isnt to use Facebook).
I've installed Hardware Monitor and my idle temperatures on my i7 are ~60 degrees and my GPU is ~55 degrees. Seems pretty ok I guess. Under heavy load, they exceed 97 degrees and thats when the system shuts down, beacuse of thermal protection.
I've tried testing with bios 71 and bios 59, but the problems persist and I didnt really notice much of a difference, but I have read that under some bios the fan doesnt go over a certain %, but never reaches 100% speed. I've also updated GPU drivers and energy management thingy.
Now, I have come to two solutions - I am going to clean the pc today, apply new thermal paste and blow out the dust and stuff. The other is, but I dont really want to do it, is to cut the blue wire that is the fan control one, but then the fan would be at 100% constantly, which is just not needed (noise and stuff).
Those underload temperatures are measured with my cooling station active (homemade from 2 old GPU fans).

New inspiron 14z. It seems that the fan is very noisy almost all the time the computer is on. It gets louder and softer according to what programs are open, but it's never really quiet. The real fun starts, however, once she opens a graphics-intensive program . The computer gets so hot it's hard to touch it, and after a while it'll just shut down itself without any warning. Is this a common issue with the Inspiron 14z? What should we do?

I have replaced mother board and LCD of my Inspiron N5010. After replacement, it started to shut down constantly, usually 5-10 min after start up. I have run diagnostics, it showed error 2000-0413 (LCD cable not detected), but could not finish all diagnostic process, cause it shut down again during CPU memory test.
Is it possible that because of this error computer shut downs then working or it is two separated problems? Can it be that only cable connector causing error or it is a defect of new mother board?

My laptop will randomly turn off. I don't think that it is overheating because sometimes it just shuts off like 1 minutes after i turn it on. I don't feel any heat coming from the fan or anything. When it turns off it doesn't go through the shutdown process it just turns off. Iv'e tried a factory reset and a complete virus/malware scan.

I have a problem with my 15R. It shuts down "for no reason". Right now it takes him up to 20 s to shut down so there's no time for any diagnostic software:
it shutdown in BIOS too
it shutdown with battery only and AC only
it shutdown with HDD, CD, SD card reader, WIFI... and everything else that was unpluggable
it DOES NOT shutdown without RAM
it shutdown with any combination of my 2 RAM DIMMs
after a long break it needs ~20 s to shutdown, 10 after a short break
I suspect it's a thermistor as the fan makes a lot of noise even in BIOS. So my question is - what could be the problem and where are 15R thermistors located so I could check if they are fine.

But maybe 5-10 maybe more minutes of being on, it goes black or a message comes up saying "the instruction at referenced memory at could not be written " I don't know what is happening or what I done wrong. I can't get a new laptop or anything due to money issues at the moment.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15R SE (7520) with Windows 8 having issues shutting down and waking up from sleep.
When I go to the Charms bar -> Click settings -> Power -> Shutdown , the laptop seems to start the shutdown process , the screen turns off but it seems to stay on (Power button, activity leds on). No matter how much time I wait it will not shutdown and I have to long-press the Power button to do a hard shutdown.
In the Windows Event Viewer I see the following Critical Error:
Critical (kernel power, event ID 41): The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Same problem when I close the lid, the computer will not come back from Sleep.
Strangely enough, I created a shortcut button on my desktop for faster shutdown that works perfectly: C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe /s /t 0
I wanted to check here before I did a re-install as most of the information I have found on Google people just seem to end up fixing it re-installing.

I have a 1525 laptop that wants to stay awake most of the time. I have it set to hibernate when the cover closes. It behaves most of the time, but occasionally it decides to restart instead of hibernating. When it's acting up, it will do the restart if you try to put it in hibernation, sleep or if you try to shut it down. The only way to kill the thing is to do a hard shutdown using the power button. It's annoying to say the least, since you can't just close it and walk away. If it restarts with the cover closed, it gets way too hot.

I have had a problem with the DVD drive for a few months now. Sometimes the light on it flashes and you here it attempting to look for a DVD (When it's empty). When it's full it sometimes flashes and runs autorun. After it flashes it also ejects half the time, and also it'll just eject randomly without any warning or loading noises.
I explained the problem to Dell and they sent me a replacement DVD drive, but the problem still happens, so I'm guessing it's not the DVD drive itself.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could solve this problem?
