Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 :: Switchable Graphics Not Working
Sep 27, 2012I recently purchased an Inspiron 15R 5520 with duel graphics with the standard intel HD 4000 and a AMD Radeon HD 7670 with 1mb RAM. I tried for the first time to play some graphic intensive games and found that the graphic cards weren't switching. Opening up the Catalyst Control Centre I find that the only option available to me is to change the orientation of the desktop. When I select hardware, nothing shows except the system information button. On the other hand, the intel control centre shows all. I'm sure this can't be normal. The documentation says the graphics should change with the power supply.

Jan 9, 2015I am in the process of downgrading an HP 15-g013dx (J5T33UA) laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7. This is a quad-core AMD A8 APU system.
I am having trouble with USB 2.0 devices not being recognized by the hardware. I have all the devices installed in device manager, but the computer will not detect USB 2.0 devices.
It will recognize USB 3.0 devices just fine when they are plugged into the USB 3.0 port, but neither of the USB 2.0 ports. USB 2.0 devices won't work in any port. I can't confirm USB 1.1 devices at this time.
CMOS setup is set to Legacy mode: Disable.
Is there an additional driver or configuration that I am missing, or is there another issue going on?

But almost all the time Skype telling me that I should close all the programs that may use the webcam, but I haven't any other apps that uses webcam, Is there some additional drivers or application I should install? BTW it worked properly on Windows 7. And it IS working on Ubuntu so I presume that's a software issue.

Oct 22, 2012I received my Dell Inspiron 15R - 5520 laptop and am attempting to set it up to perform a UEFI boot to a Windows 7 (64 bit) installation. I am using bios version A11 which is the latest available.
If I use legacy, I am able to boot fine to the Installation DVD and install/use the system. If I use UEFI (non-secure boot), it will freeze during the boot process for a long period of time. I do not ever get to the GUI to attempt installation. I have tried clearing the disk partitions using diskpart -> clean to ensure it is not due to having GPT vs MBR and have also tried changing the SATA adapter to ATA vs AHCI.
Alternately, I am able to boot to, and install Windows 8 RTM in UEFI mode.
Before I get a lot of responses of "Don't use UEFI", the reason I purchased this laptop was for the purpose of dual booting between windows 8 and windows 7 for development purposes, and require the use of secureboot to properly test the software I am developing. If this laptop is not able to run Windows 7 in UEFI mode, I will need to return it and select an alternate vendor.

Oct 24, 2012I recently bought a Inspiron 17R SE. Nice machine with 4 USB 3.0 ports. That sounds great but that is also my problem. I am used to work with VMWare on Windows 7 as host OS and XP as guest OS. That is fine as long as there are USB 2.0 ports available since VMWare can only handle USB 3.0 under Windows 7 if it is based on a NEC chipset. I would not have a problem if the machine had USB 2.0 ports.
Is there a way to downgrade to USB 2.0?

May 22, 2014I have an HP Envy j011dx that came with Windows 8 Home Edition(64b9t). I put in an SSD and upgraded the ram and installed Win 7 Pro(64bit). Everything is working great except the control keys don't work. When I hit the left ctrl, I get, [9- and the right ctrl, I get, l; I have searched and tried a few different drivers and have looked at some posts about downgrading to 7 and haven't seen anything on this issue. I have ran all windows updates and tried several different drivers. I put the old HD in with W8 and it works so it isn't a hardware issue. I originally looked at this post before doing the downgrade and it gave me the confidence to move forward with putting Win7 on. I have until Friday to take this back to the store if I can't get it working. I have also checked the region/language settings.

So I plugged it in and used it for a few minutes when suddenly the screen went black and the computer just shut off while plugged in. Feb 24, 2013I have an Inspiron 5520, with Win 7 Home premium 64 bit and an external Western Digital HDD My passport Essential SE (3.0). The laptop is fairly new, I purchased it last June. From first day it seemed that something was wrong with the connection with the hdd. In case I was even touching the cable of the hdd it was disconnecting for example, and since yesterday it doesn't detect it at all!
The light of the hdd goes on, and I can feel it working, but I get no beep sound on my computer, I dont see the drive on device manager, and in general its nowhere!
I tried the hdd in all four USB ports and nothing. The drive has no problem on other computers (with OS Vista and Win 7). My mouse works perfectly on all four usb ports.I updated the drivers for BIOS and chipset, I run pc check up. I checked both laptop and drive with antivirus and antispyware programs. I reinstalled the driver from WD website.

I don't know why, but anything I have open- chrome, games, word, windows, periodicly acts as if it is minimized, except I can still see it. If I am on word, I might be typing. Then it happens, and no matter what I do nothing happens unless I click the window again. That means something else, not an application, is opening and closing in the background. The border color changes when this happens. It happens about every minute to five minutes. I think it might be McAfee, but I'm not sure- I can't uninstall it anyways, wont work enough to uninstall or let me delete the files. I did the whole dell scan thing from their website, everything twas fine it said. Sometimes, my computer also fades black and back on, again and again and again- unless I restart it.

Oct 1, 2012I got a new Inspiron 15R 5520. The problem is I can't boot the laptop from a USB stick like I did on N5040(My 2 years old laptop), and there is no option to do this. First, I hit 'F2' to enter the BIOS setup page, there are only 3 options under the boot device: Hard Drive, CD/DVD, Network. I restart the computer and hit 'F12' to select boot device, still no USB.
Does Dell freeze the function to boot from USB device?
