What's the difference between UEFI and Legacy and why can't I install Windows 7? I put the Windows 7 CD into the CD-Rom and the installation doesn't start up. It does start up only when I change the bios to legacy. What's the difference between UEFI and legacy? Is it possible to install it on UEFI? If not, if I will install it on legacy, will everything be ok?
Inspiron 15R-5521
I received my Dell Inspiron 15R - 5520 laptop and am attempting to set it up to perform a UEFI boot to a Windows 7 (64 bit) installation. I am using bios version A11 which is the latest available.
If I use legacy, I am able to boot fine to the Installation DVD and install/use the system. If I use UEFI (non-secure boot), it will freeze during the boot process for a long period of time. I do not ever get to the GUI to attempt installation. I have tried clearing the disk partitions using diskpart -> clean to ensure it is not due to having GPT vs MBR and have also tried changing the SATA adapter to ATA vs AHCI.
Alternately, I am able to boot to, and install Windows 8 RTM in UEFI mode.
Before I get a lot of responses of "Don't use UEFI", the reason I purchased this laptop was for the purpose of dual booting between windows 8 and windows 7 for development purposes, and require the use of secureboot to properly test the software I am developing. If this laptop is not able to run Windows 7 in UEFI mode, I will need to return it and select an alternate vendor.
Is it possible to switch from legacy bios to uefi on a dell Vostro 1000 and so how?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Acer Aspire E5-511P with bios Insydeh20. On UEFI it does boot USB-drive, even with passwords set. It boots on USB-drive with legacy set, but now my Wifi doesn't work. On older laptops no issues with UEFI, I just had to set boot order. And Wifi works just fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a ThinkPad 540p that comes with preloaded Windows 8.1. As I want to dual boot the machine I tried to select the Legacy Boot option in the BIOS/Startup tab, but I can't do anything as the option UEFI/Legacy Book is greyed out and locked in "UEFI Only". Below it there is an option called: -CSM Support that is also greyed out and selected as [No]. (below these options there is a little note with an asterisk saying "Unselectable for Secure Boot").
How can I enable the UEFI/Legacy Boot option again in order to dual boot the computer? I want to be able to boot from USB or from the CD Drive.
For the last 2 days I have been trying to install Windows 7 x64 in UEFI mode on my laptop but it seems entirely impossible. Whatever I do, the boot menu (F12) just won't show any UEFI devices AT ALL, just the normal DVD and/or USB options. Obviously when I try to boot from either normal DVD or USB, Windows 7 setup freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen, I'm pretty sure that's because it is not running the EFI bootloader of the setup.
For the record, I can't just install Windows 7 in Legacy/BIOS mode because it is then impossible to install the Synaptics Touchpad driver under Windows because the Touchpad device is not discovered for whatever reason.
I have been struggling with installing w8 on my Ideapad z510 laptop in UEFI mode, but neither I could succeed it nor I could I find something that might work. I will clearly explain the case.
Point 1:
As I understood, to succeed w8 install in UEFI format, one needs to choose "UEFI First" mode from Boot Menu in BIOS. Then, the source of the boot needs to be specified to identify the rigid path to the documents to load so that new OS could be installed correctly.
Problem1:
It is possible to chose UEFI First from boot mode, but it's not possible to choose the USB path for UEFI booting in this case, which doesn't allow you to succeed a UEFI boot to your computer. You can't reach the DVD or USB, where the installation files are, and start installation process.
Point2:
Considering the first case, you need to choose Legacy Support mode to boot your computer and reach USB disk or DVD to install new OS on the computer.
Problem2:
To succeed UEFI mode booting to the computer, you need to see 4 different partitions on your disk at point of disk selection, where you choose the disk you'll install your OS. However, when you select the Legacy Support mode from BIOS, the disk partition is limited to 2 in my case, which are:
Primary diskSystem reserved (350 MB)Hence, when I continue with the installation, the OS is installed on Legacy mode. After installation, when I go to BIOS to choose UEFI mode for boot mode, the laptop checks some connections from network and says
EFI network 0 for IPv4 failedEFI network 0 for IPv6 failed respectively.
PS: Please don't tell that "you can't install, because your computer doesn't support", because I received the computer from technical service and a version of W8 was installed on it in UEFI mode. However I deleted it to install W8 pro.

I download lots of video drivers. one of them is AMD radeon HD 8730M driver. when I try to set up and use, it says that is not suitable with this pc or windows. what will I do now? Is windows 7 cannot be used with inspiron 15R 5521 ? what will I download?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 5521 that is about a year and a half old. In the last two weeks, it's begun to make a beeping noise and will not boot up. As far as I can tell, there's no pattern or end to the beeps -- it's just one beep continuously. The longest I've let it beep before I couldn't stand it anymore and popped the battery out was 25 beeps. There are about two and a half seconds in between each beep. Up until very recently, taking the battery out and putting it back in seemed to solve the problem, but that no longer seems to work.
I've researched beep codes but can't seem to find one matching that description.
Running Windows 7. The BIOS version and date is Dell Inc. A05, 1/3/2013, SMBIOS Version 207.

i updated my BIOS from A05 to A12. It is fine when i start up windows, fan works without any noise. When i try to play some games like FIFA, i can play normally. When i close the game and start browsing on the internet, my fan still works on 5400 RPM, and it never stops.

Once in a while it detects but then goes off again. I had taken it to a Dell store where they tried replacing the battery as the diagnostics showed a battery problem, but changing the battery also did not work. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition 7720. It came with a preinstalled Windows 8 (so 64-bit and mandatory UEFI boot). I want to use Linux (more specifically, Archlinux) for work and Windows for games, so dual boot is needed.
I almost completed the Linux installation except for the bootloader: I need to boot Linux from UEFI and didn't manage to do it so far. Here is what I did after I received the PC:
-Disabled Secure Boot; updated BIOS to version A12
-Resized the main Windows partition and created a few partitions for Linux;
-Switched to legacy boot mode and managed to boot a MBR-bootable Arch linux installation USB drive;
-Installed most of the system switched back to UEFI boot mode, Secure Boot off.
At this time I needed to boot the kernel from UEFI for the bootloader installation program to have mandatory access to the EFI environment variables. So I created an UEFI-bootable Archlinux installation USB drive (with a FAT partition) but so far I couldn't manage to successfully boot this drive from UEFI instead of Windows 8.
I think I really tried every single combination, such as:
different USB ports; different boot entries created with F2 boot setup, with different parameters; different orders for the boot entries; hit my boot entries directly within F12 boot menu.
No matter what, in UEFI mode the system always boots the Windows partition.
Also, I could not find any relevant manual or software documentation about the A12 BIOS on the Dell site, did I miss something?
The solution that the user described in this thread to UEFI-boot to a DVD did not work for me with a USB drive.
I have a dell 7720 laptop, which I would like the Windows 7 install on a SSD msata. I set UEFI, everything is OK, it loads the installer, run the install halfway, and it's the first reboot, the BIOS can not find the half-installed Windows, and start over again ... I have tried everything, I have the BIOS is re-installed. Windows 8 is also doing the same.
The funny part about it the same way I did two months ago and everything was fine, the machine worked, I just wanted to make Windows 7 the next and 8 easyBCD replaced with the sequence, and then he died doing it every since.
Maybe this program (easyBCD) I reached into the BIOS to do a bios update bios reset and not restore? If you do not install uefi, but then a traditional HDD for no reason, and the SSD is not uefi does not work.
I think the BIOS is going to be something, because I see the following installation to set up the UEFI, and partition, but the BIOS does not recognize (ran half the installation and over again to start because UEFI boot is not displayed you installed.) If you set it that boot device is added, it will print that you can not find a file system, but if I turn off the traditional boot then you will find the first installed unfinished Windows, you add the boot list, and then I went to the BIOS settings, restart, and again, you do not see your operating system. (none of what I just set it boot list)....
I've had this laptop for the best part of two months now and it has been excellent up to now. However, it has now shut down completely 4 times within the same day - with absolutely no warning. It doesn't feel as if it has overheated but I'm only touching the outer shell.

I feel it was something from inside hardware because it is not turning on by pushing on button and tried to charge him but charging light did not on but adapter light was on that means adapter is fine. When I try to boot it, it starts to boot (audibly you can hear the internal systems starting to go) but the screen stays black and after about 5 seconds, it starts beeping. It beeps continuously approximately once every 2-2.5 seconds, and I have counted up to about 30 beeps (it didn't stop beeping, it was just doing my head in).
It started about six months ago, doing it once when I tried to boot it, but pulling the battery fixed it. However, it got progressively worse until one night it simply wouldn't boot at all. A short-term fix was to mash F4 or F9 once the power button was pressed, but now even that doesn't work. I think it might be something in the boot sequence that causes it to fail...

Can he downgrade the OS to Windows 7(64Bit)? as he has some issues with certain software, which according to the developers won't work on Windows 8. Will the warranty be void if the system is formatted and Windows 7 is installed. Is there any option to go in for a dual boot with Windows 8 and Windows 7. As per the support center, they do not recommend dual booting on a Windows 8 system.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new Inspiron 15R 5521 preinstalled with Windows 8and I have never powered it on because I want to make an entire disk backupas it is in a "pure" state.
I removed its harddrive (Western Digital, 1 TB) from my laptop to connectit to my desktop with 2 harddrives (one for system (Windows 7, 64 bit); the otherfor data (2 TB)), but never started the installed system to prevent the systemfrom writing some system information into the Inspiron disk.Instead I inserted a Windows PE CD embedded with Acronis True Image 2013.I chose "Disk Backup". The Inspiron harddrive had 6 partitions.The destination drive (where the image created was to be saved) was the 2-TB data disk.Clicked "Finish" and writing Partition 1...done, 2...ok, .... 6 ok and"Backup Process Failed!" at the final stage.
The final stage seems to be a partition layout.BTW the Acronis backup system has an option "Ignore Errors" (force complete).I gave it a try too, but the image created was incomplete with only 4 partitions.Macrium Rescue Disk is a similar one but with no ignore error option.I also tried this and failed at the final stage. No image created.The error message was "Unable to read from disk".Both the Inspiron disk and the destination drive happened to be Western Digital ones.I tried Western Digital Lifeguard checker on each and found no bad sectors.
I've had a problem with my LCD for a while now. For around six months the screen sometimes turns black unless it is at a particular degree to the keyboard. For example, at 90 degrees there is a good chance that the screen will flicker and will mostly be black. More than 90 usually works.
Couple days ago I turned my laptop off and before it shut down left the room. When I came back after 15 minutes I heard the beeping sound. I turned the laptop off immediately. After that, every time I turn on laptop, nothing happens apart from beeping. I tried 'D' and then turn on. Also f12. Nothing changes, screen stays black. I also removed battery and pressed on turn on in order to get rid of excess charge.
