I just installed a 2nd hard drive in my Studio 17 that I've had for about a year. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
The 2nd hard drive shows up in the "Hardware Manager" but it doesn't show up as a drive under "My Computer
I have been looking at a Studio 1737 laptop for a friend. Iniitally it wasn't booting, and it looked like a hard disk failure. I removed the disk and tried it on an external USB to SATA connector, and couldn't access it from there either.
I ordered a new SATA drive and installed it. Tried to install Vista back from the recovery disks, but it couldn't detect a drive. Checked in BIOS and it wasn't listed. Changed the BIOS setting to IDE, but still not found. I returned that one and purchased another, but the same problem. That disk was also returned and has been tested OK.
I'm suspecting that there may another issue, but i'm not sure where to look.
I was trying to update my old studio 1737, and updated the BIOS to A09 while doing an otherwise thorough and effective diagnostic (from Dell website). Now when the BIOS does identify my hard drive its inaccurate (intermittent ID of the HDD, showing no HDD sometime and a Samsung other times). So, laptop fails to boot, saying operating system not found. Am trying to flash BIOS using last working version on USB stick, following advice found on internet. Well out of warranty period.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI should have left it alone but I've never had a bios go corrupt during update. Had A03 BIOS and attempted to update to A09.
Laptop locked up during the flash and now it doesn't even show the bios start up! I removed the BIOS battery and LT battery. Maybe I need to wait longer then 5 mins for the entire system to discharge and then try power up again. So far just a black screen!
I just got one problem fixed with loading a new hard drive now this.
why doe's my new 320gb hard drive only show as a 298gb ? i have installed it into a usb hard drive caddy done a quick format, ready to clone my laptop hard drive onto my new one.i'm just a bit baffled as to the above. 22gb seems alot to lose.

I've posted the problem in that thread ... and I may be breaking some rules posting a new thread ... I just know there has to be a simple answer to this that I am not seeing ... so I am desperate, so here we go!
I've added the Optical drive caddy into my M1330 successfully... at first. My computer was actually in hibernation when I took it apart (battery and all) to install the caddy.
I took out the slot load drive and installed a Momentus 500gb drive. Put the Comp back together and started. Vista recognized the drive as if it were just plugged in I could browse files and copy to and from the drive.
On reboot though, the drive is no longer detected. The "fixed bay device" notification in the bios under "Device Info" claims that nothing is there when it would normally show the DVD drive.
Device Manager does not show the device once Vista is booted, and it does not show up when I scan for new hardware. The computer boots fine as it did before, and I even rebooted using a thorough POST behavior to try to force it to recognize the HDD in in the caddy the PATA slot .....
I've recently encountered a problem where every time my Studio 17 is supposed to go to sleep mode (closing lid, clicking sleep mode in start menu, etc.)
it becomes a hard shut-down, where I have to turn on the laptop again and it tells me that the laptop was shut down improperly.
My power settings indicate that it is supposed to go to sleep mode, but it actually doesn't
ive upgraded to a bigger hard drive, and would like to keep all my dell goodies that came with it pre installed. is there a way i can download all these programs (wifi apps, etc) or transfer them to my new hard drive os install? i know i can get drivers from dell site, but im stumped on all the software

Well I was able to buy the whole laptop base, with system board and power button so all i had to do was install the screen cd drive, hard drive, and wireless. I did all of this and put it back together, but when i try to start the computer it gives me a no hard drive installed error. What can I do? I ran the memory test and its 100% working, and in the start up test or whatever, the only thing with a problem is the hard drive not showing up.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis laptop is HP dv2000t with a 120 GB SATA drive. It was setup to dual boot Ubuntu LINUX and Win Vista. I want to change it so that the only OS is WinXP and the drive will have all space in a single NTFS partition. I booted up with a utilty CD containing Win98 DOS boot files (IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, etc.) and also containing a partition manager program. I deleted all existing partitions and created a NTFS partition containing the entire 120 GB space. Then I booted with a Win XP installation CD to start installing Win XP - but the Win XP setup program says there is no hard drive installed. That leaves me dead in the water. Note: my utility CD (Win98 DOS) accesses the HD just fine. Does anybody know why the Win XP setup program thinks there is no HD installed?

However, the hard drive started acting funny, so an SSD was put in its place and Windows 8 was installed on it. However, now I want to go back to Windows 7 Home Premium. However, I heard that since the hardware configuration of the computer was changed (via the hard drive), the OEM key (which I still have), wouldn't take. Will it work or will it not?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't turn off my laptop. Widnows shuts down, the hard drive LED doesn't blink, just the power LED and I can hear the fan from time to time and it just hangs there. So, all I can do is hold the power button and force it to shut down. Even more weird is the fact that I can restart the computer. This started about a month ago and I've tried everything I could think of... to no avail.Here's my system info:

Here's what I did:
1) I suspected a Windows update, so I tried to restore to a previous point.
2) Didn't want to reinstall Windows, so I tried to boot from the Windows CD and shut it down from there.
3) I tried to let it hang after the shutdown. This brought up a BSOD two times. It was DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.
4) Then I started suspecting the BIOS. Updated to A13 (the latest version for my model)
5) Resetting the BIOS to default settings.
6) Updated all drivers to the latest.
7) Restored the MBR. (Windows repair said that it couldn't find my Windows installation, even though I was able to boot)
8) Tried to shut down without the battery.
9) Tried to shut down without the power adapter.
10) Ran all Dell support center tests. The short ones, though. No problems were found.
My laptop is still under warranty, so I won't open it, but I'd like to know that I have tried everything before I contact the support center.My job is on my laptop. I don't have a PC, so if I take it to support, I won't be able to work.
I bought my E15 without dvd-r, I cant access to the bios pressing F2.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI hate for this to be my first post, but after looking everywhere on the internet and on this site (I've been lurking a while) I'm still at the same place I started with my Studio 15 laptop. I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
I had my laptop plugged into my LCD tv via an HDMI cable as I often do, and when I went to close the laptop to use just the LCD, the tv flashed, showed a blue screen of death for a quick second and then went black. I opened the laptop and it was still on, but the screen wouldn't go on.
I restarted my computer and from there on out it kept making a beeping noise and stalling for a really long time at the "Dell Studio/progress bar" screen. After leaving it at that screen for a while the clicking stop and then it allowed me to access the Boot Options and Setup. Under setup, when I click on the drive under SATA hard drive, it shows something like 10GB and nothing more, and I have no options on the screen .....
I tried to update my bios to A07 -> A11 (the lastest). But the update failed. Ok. I just close the updater. I open Google Chrome, surf on the Internet etc. After 10 min, I shut off my Dell computer normaly. Now when I turn my MiniPC on, it just doesn't do anything... My hard drive doesn't starts. The screen stays black...

I have a X200 with a Intel GS45 graphic card, which should use 256mb of the systems RAM.So far I only had 2gb of RAM, but recently I upgraded to another 4gb.Now the system says that it uses 2,96gb of ram, and the graphic card is listed with 1024mb of RAM.
The system I use is WinXP SP3 32bit. Why is so much asigned to graphic card? Is there an option to change the amount that is used by the graphic card? I don't think that the graphic card is using that extra RAM anyway.I read that it could work to add /pae to the boot.ini, but this didn't change anything.
I have acer aspire E15-511 with windows 8.1. F2 doesn't show at startup, ro the acronis F11 key. How to get form acer and acronis but no dice.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a Dell Factory Restore on my Dell Inspiron 1440 Vista laptop. I did a manual reinstallation some days ago, but only halfway through as I got confused with the drivers to install and messed up on the installation sequence, and thus started having driver problems again. Now, I don't see "Repair your computer" on the Vista Advanced Bootup options menu, even though the partition is still there intact and undamaged.
Any way to work this out ? I think I saw an article where doing a lot of steps through command prompt made the Factory Restore work, even when it does not show up.
I put my laptop on sleep by closing the lid but after some time when I open the lid it doesn't show any display. I tried to on the laptop by pressing power button but it doesn't responding. I bought it around 4 months ago.

I have also tried draining the battery and recharging then rebooting but nothing happened. It is completely unresponsive. It used to work just fine, just last night I've been playing games and it was working smoothly. But when I woke up and booted up my laptop, nothing was working. By the way, what's the small button underneath the laptop, I think it is the master reset button, because my brother was thinking of pressing it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWas working fine. When I turn the machine on it freezes on the dell splash screen about 60% threw. When the hard drive is out the computer boot fine. (obviously no OS though). The hard drive is also making a beeping noise. Dell said they would send me a new hard drive, but I want to know what caused this as of yesterday when I received it I did a diagnostics and the hard drive was in perfect condition. These things happened today could they have caused it?
1) Laptop did not go to sleep in my backpack and was totally on for about 15min. (Overheat?)
2) Windows froze today and I had to hold down the power button to turn it off.
3) I had used another Dell power supply to power my machine as I did not have the regular cord, but it worked while attached and this problem did not happen till around 30-40min later after it had been unplugged.
