Dell Inspiron N5040 :: Doesn't Start Anymore After Upgraded To Windows 8
Feb 19, 2013I've got my Dell Inspiron n5040 for almost 14 months, on which I upgraded to Windows 8, and now it doesn't start anymore. It tried to start in repair mode, but then it just shows a black screen, which doesn't change.
After running diagnostics I've gotten error info:
Error Code 2000-0142Validation 63358Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N WD-WX51A8109114, self test unsuccesful. Status = 7.

Apr 8, 2013We thought there was a hard drive issue on my laptop Dell sent replacement drive(It showed drive missing on diags). However, it appears the original issue was the drive was coming loose from the connector. Now anytime I set the laptop down or on the side the hard drive comes loose. We can not find any type of strap or screw that holds the hard drive in place. It is a model N5040. All screws were tightened and none appear to be missing.

Dec 9, 2014my laptop has failed the hard drive diagnostic with an error code of 2000-0142, and looking here in the forum I see it means that I should replace the hard drive. That being said, I am not actually having any problems with my computer. I ran the f12 diagnostic after a routine scan notified me of a smart short test fail and it came up on the diagnostic as well. Does that mean that at any moment I would actually see something happen?

Locked up and when I rebooted, it said no hard drive could be found. I have a new hard drive, but how do I get my Windows 8 (paid for with the computer) and a boot disk from Dell?

Apr 5, 2013I can't turn off my laptop. Widnows shuts down, the hard drive LED doesn't blink, just the power LED and I can hear the fan from time to time and it just hangs there. So, all I can do is hold the power button and force it to shut down. Even more weird is the fact that I can restart the computer. This started about a month ago and I've tried everything I could think of... to no avail.Here's my system info:

Here's what I did:
1) I suspected a Windows update, so I tried to restore to a previous point.
2) Didn't want to reinstall Windows, so I tried to boot from the Windows CD and shut it down from there.
3) I tried to let it hang after the shutdown. This brought up a BSOD two times. It was DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.
4) Then I started suspecting the BIOS. Updated to A13 (the latest version for my model)
5) Resetting the BIOS to default settings.
6) Updated all drivers to the latest.
7) Restored the MBR. (Windows repair said that it couldn't find my Windows installation, even though I was able to boot)
8) Tried to shut down without the battery.
9) Tried to shut down without the power adapter.
10) Ran all Dell support center tests. The short ones, though. No problems were found.
My laptop is still under warranty, so I won't open it, but I'd like to know that I have tried everything before I contact the support center.My job is on my laptop. I don't have a PC, so if I take it to support, I won't be able to work.

May 23, 2012I have a dell inspiron n5040 . Its only 1 month old.since 2days ago everytime i try to turn it on all i get is a blank screen with audio of 7 beeps a pause then 7 more and so on. I have read a few posts about taking the battery out and pressing the power button for 30 secs and also trying with just the ac power, I don't think this works for my problem. The power and battery lights comes on and the disk holder flashes. So my problem is I TURN ON MY LAPTOP AND THE SCREEN IS BLANK,I HEAR 7 BEEPS ETC.

Nov 30, 2008My high school-age son was working on an English paper when something fell off a shelf and whacked his Aspire 3680 right above the hard drive bay. It started clicking and finally crashed.
The computer won't run with the hard drive installed. It makes nasty clicking sounds trying to boot, and finally beeps and powers off. Without the hard drive, the laptop powers up and runs BIOS just fine.
We can buy a new hard drive, but it seems awful to pay Acer another $20 + $10 shipping for the Vista restore disk!

Dell Inspiron 15 N5040 :: Won't Start Up / Suddenly Screen Turned Green And Then Shut Off
Feb 4, 2015I have a Dell Inspiron 15 (N5040) and currently having problems with it. I was watching something this morning and suddenly the screen turned green and then shut off. It turns on but the screen refuses to. I first expected that the screen is just unplugged inside the computer so I tried to hook it up to my TV via Hdmi and oddly it didn't do anything.I took it all apart disconnecting everything and then reconnecting everything. Everything seemed to be in good shape. No signs of shorts. Then after letting it run I noticed it beep 4 times. According to Dell 4 beeps mean "Read/Write error." I don't know if they meant the ram or hdd so I tried isolating both sticks of ram and no difference. I tried putting in two different hdds, nothing different. Even if they were I don't know why the screen wouldn't turn on and the bios wouldn't try to load. I suspect that the gpu is just fried. Dell Inspiron 15 (N5040), Intel i3, 8 gb of ram. Windows 7.

May 23, 2009My friend's macbook (white plastic, 2.0, napa/core2 before santa rosa platform) isn't starting, and I have no idea why. He initially asked me to replace the top and bottom casing. I accepted, and ordered the parts. Around the time they were supposed to come, I took the computer apart completely (required for the repair), but one of the parts was delayed, so the computer sat splayed on my desk for a week. I didn't exactly stack textbooks on it, but it also wasn't covered in anti-static wrap. So, now, I finally got the part and put it back together, and the computer doesn't start. At all. The screen doesn't go grey, the 'sleep' light doesn't turn on, the fan doesn't start - nothing. The magsafe light is green, so the power is going in. It's also worth noting that I have no battery for it, so it's all on A/C.
Does anyone know what's wrong? My two hypothetical solutions are (a) I need a battery, or (b) the logic board is dead due to static.
How likely are each of these scenarios - especially the logic board one? How possible is it that it was static overloaded?

Feb 17, 2013I have a very confusing issue with my Dell Inspiron N5110 Core i5 laptop. Sometimes when I try to switch it on, it doesn't do anything at all. I tried to talk the battery and the AC adapter out, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, put the battery and the AC adapter back in but nothing at all happens. No lights are showing up at all on it even when i'm having the AC adapter however i am sure that the adapter is fine.
What confuses me that when i leave it for a day or two and try again, it just works fine. It is about 7 months old and it came up with Windows 7 home edition on it.

Feb 28, 2013This computer is 6 months old. It came with Windows 7, and I did install Windows 8 in October 2012. I have had problems ever since and neither Dell nor Microsoft can support. ANYWAY, until today, my DVD/CD player worked just fine. I used it every few days, but today when I went to use it, the door would not open. I notice the light next to the Open button is not lit up, but my device manager says it is in working order and the driver is updated.
I tried Ejecting from the device manager, but it does not work. When I ran the Dell Diagnostics program, it said that it was unable to run the diagnostics when there is media in the drive or the door is open. There is a game disc in the drive, and the game works, but I think it is downloaded onto the computer, so maybe does not use the disc during play?? How can the drive work and not the door? Is there anything I can do??

Oct 28, 2009I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop, last week when switching on the laptop I was presented with an error saying "Disk Read Error", the laptop would not boot up at all not even in safe mode.
I ran Dell diagnostics and it gave me a error code of 0146 which is harddrive related. I then attempted to repair the windows installation using chkdsk /p and /r but this seems to have made things worse! When booting up, all i can see is a blank screen

I have a Repair Win 7 - 64-bit CD, made from the old hard drive -- do I use that to boot up the computer? Or do I use the old hard drive image that I have stored on an external hard drive?
