I've got my Dell Inspiron n5040 for almost 14 months, on which I upgraded to Windows 8, and now it doesn't start anymore. It tried to start in repair mode, but then it just shows a black screen, which doesn't change.
After running diagnostics I've gotten error info:
Error Code 2000-0142Validation 63358Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N WD-WX51A8109114, self test unsuccesful. Status = 7.
My Inspiron N5040 doesn't start at all. Looks like hard drive has crashed. My service tag is 9XS8LT1.

Its only 1 month old.since 2days ago everytime i try to turn it on all i get is a blank screen with audio of 7 beeps a pause then 7 more and so on. I have read a few posts about taking the battery out and pressing the power button for 30 secs and also trying with just the ac power, I don't think this works for my problem. The power and battery lights comes on and the disk holder flashes. So my problem is I TURN ON MY LAPTOP AND THE SCREEN IS BLANK,I HEAR 7 BEEPS ETC.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 15 (N5040) and currently having problems with it. I was watching something this morning and suddenly the screen turned green and then shut off. It turns on but the screen refuses to. I first expected that the screen is just unplugged inside the computer so I tried to hook it up to my TV via Hdmi and oddly it didn't do anything.I took it all apart disconnecting everything and then reconnecting everything. Everything seemed to be in good shape. No signs of shorts. Then after letting it run I noticed it beep 4 times. According to Dell 4 beeps mean "Read/Write error." I don't know if they meant the ram or hdd so I tried isolating both sticks of ram and no difference. I tried putting in two different hdds, nothing different. Even if they were I don't know why the screen wouldn't turn on and the bios wouldn't try to load. I suspect that the gpu is just fried. Dell Inspiron 15 (N5040), Intel i3, 8 gb of ram. Windows 7.
View 2 Replies View Relatedtried to upgrade my Latitude E5510 from 2x2Gb (factury Samsung) to 2x4Gb Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9. BIOS updated to Rev. A13, latest. Memory is recognized as 8Gb. But booting into Windows7 X64 doesn't work anymore. If I boot from a Lubuntu CD (x86) it runs, naturally only with approx. 4Gb since this is a x86 OS-version. Windows 7 X64 just reboots. If I use Save Mode a reboot occurs when the loading of "ClassPnP.sys" starts. When I put in the old 2x2Gb everything works perfectly. Can't even get into Windows Setup from a clean DVD.

My friend's macbook (white plastic, 2.0, napa/core2 before santa rosa platform) isn't starting, and I have no idea why. He initially asked me to replace the top and bottom casing. I accepted, and ordered the parts. Around the time they were supposed to come, I took the computer apart completely (required for the repair), but one of the parts was delayed, so the computer sat splayed on my desk for a week. I didn't exactly stack textbooks on it, but it also wasn't covered in anti-static wrap. So, now, I finally got the part and put it back together, and the computer doesn't start. At all. The screen doesn't go grey, the 'sleep' light doesn't turn on, the fan doesn't start - nothing. The magsafe light is green, so the power is going in. It's also worth noting that I have no battery for it, so it's all on A/C.
Does anyone know what's wrong? My two hypothetical solutions are (a) I need a battery, or (b) the logic board is dead due to static.
How likely are each of these scenarios - especially the logic board one? How possible is it that it was static overloaded?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very confusing issue with my Dell Inspiron N5110 Core i5 laptop. Sometimes when I try to switch it on, it doesn't do anything at all. I tried to talk the battery and the AC adapter out, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, put the battery and the AC adapter back in but nothing at all happens. No lights are showing up at all on it even when i'm having the AC adapter however i am sure that the adapter is fine.
What confuses me that when i leave it for a day or two and try again, it just works fine. It is about 7 months old and it came up with Windows 7 home edition on it.
i have a problem. a few months ago my dell warranty for my alienware has expired. now all of a sudden, the computer crashed and refuses to turn on again. first it restartet and asked my if i want to strt windows normal or safe mode. i entered normal, as i thought it was jus a crash. it showed the start screen, than all lights went off. no matter what i do, it will not start. hitting the power button, however, makes a very short sound, as if it starts reading from HDD but than nothing. took battery off and waited. back on... nothing.
prior to that it showed a blue screen like it did before, when HDD was useless and had to be replaced september last year. sure the warranty of the computer itself is expired, but i still have a warranty for the new HDD. however, the service tag of the notebook says i can not contact e-mail support, because i have no warranty anymore. i can not choose anything that can change that. i fear the HDD is gone again, which i can have replaced, as it still has warranty, but i can ask no one at support, as they assume i have no warranty left.
Yesterday my brand-new VPCZ11X5E completed an automatic windows update, and shut down after completing the installation procedure. Since then windows will not start up properly: it stays in the start up phase (you know, with the windows 7 logo), before the log-on screen.
or should i just do a re-install (=losing some important documents).
I've attempted updating my XPS 1640 BIOS to A11 in my notebook.
It hanged up at the half of it (it said "Erasing block 16 of 32") and after waiting for 1 hour, I restarted the computer...
Now it doesn't start up, when I press the power button, the 3 volume keys start to blink for some seconds, then the keyboard light turns on, and the computer turns off after a couple of seconds.
I use my Dell laptop as an HTPC, I have never had this problem before but now all the sudden I'm having this problem.

sony tech did a repair on my laptop and when he was done, a piece of the trim wasn't flush near the LCD hinge. To fix this, I put a drop of krazy glue under the hinge (it snaps off) on the panel above the keyboard and was able to fix the problem cleanly.
The problem is, I noticed my caps lock light no longer turns on. I have no clue when this could have happened, since it was under a couple repairs before. But, my worry is my warranty. Do you think they'll complain about replacing it if they see I had to glue a piece together? On the other hand, the light module screws into this panel so, technically they don't need to replace this panel, just the light module.
I recently upgraded my Dell Inspiron 5520 to Windows 8 and now the media buttons don't work. Is there a Dell driver or update that I need to install to bring back this functionality in Windows 8?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI inadvertently upgraded to Windows 8.1 which I had been trying to avoid doing and don't know how it happened as I had continually knocked back prompts to upgrade. I originally did upgrade to 8.1 last year and had such major graphics issues I eventually restored factory settings to get back to Windows 8 which solved all the issues. Now the same problems are happening i.e. breaking up of the screen with loads of horizontal lines running across it.
I downloaded all the updated drivers I could from the Dell site but the graphics driver and video driver would not work and I kept getting the message that the laptop was not compatible with the downloads. It is a Dell Inspiron 3520 and the recommended drivers just will not install. I don't want to have to go through all the hassle of restoring factory settings again. I am sure the problem is with these 2 drivers mainly the NDJN4 video driver.
At random, the 6,5, - and = keys get pressed (can be seen if a text editor/area is focused at the time) and the Windows 'help' dialog pops up, then shut down (no BSOD) within 2-3 seconds. It can also just shut off at any point during boot/shut down.

When i start my laptop it loads like it was before( it says big DELL and Inspiron,then progress bar and F2 Setup and F12 Boot options). After that loads i see this thing flashing _ . And then red text comes up and says something like " Your laptop was blocked because bla bla bla" and after that red text this thing _ flashing. Keyboard is blocked, nothing happens when i try to connect USB or my mouse. The only thing i can do on my laptop now is press F2 or F12 while Dell loads, before that red thing.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Inspiron N5040 just over one year old. To do a Factory Restore I followed the instructions and pressed <F8> after a power up.
In gets to the Advanced Boot Options menu. When I select Repair Your Computer it gives 2 options something like
1) Repair Windows
2) Start Windows Normally
If I select Repair Windows it loops back to the same screen and does not do anything.
What should I do? The laptop did not come with restore CD's or DVD's...

I have a problem with double clicking. (assume that all clicking is the left click) It is most apparent on the internet, when I hit the back button once, I go back two pages. Its annoying, but now i'm having trouble highlighting, and other important tasks. I do know about keyboard alternatives, but the mouse is just more convenient.
This problem started soon after my laptop survived having orange juice spilled onto it.
I have done my own research, and most forums state a software problem, but I am sure that I have a mechanical problem. I noticed that there is an "upstroke" and a "downstroke" to my click. When I click, that is the downstroke, the mouse performs as it's supposed to; but when I lift my finger, there is a second click that I did not intend, the upstroke. I've tested this on button clicking games on my laptop, and on other computers.
We thought there was a hard drive issue on my laptop Dell sent replacement drive(It showed drive missing on diags). However, it appears the original issue was the drive was coming loose from the connector. Now anytime I set the laptop down or on the side the hard drive comes loose. We can not find any type of strap or screw that holds the hard drive in place. It is a model N5040. All screws were tightened and none appear to be missing.
