Dell :: Latitude C640 Battery Issue
Nov 9, 2009
Last week I replaced both the CMOS battery and the laptop battery.
The laptop worked perfectly while running on the battery. Then according to the instructions that came with the battery,
I changed all the power settings to never and allowed the battery to completely discharge. I then recharged it fully.
Now however the laptop will not boot up or even run at all on battery power. If the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter, all is well.
As soon as you unplug the adapter, the laptop shut off.
The battery is showing to be 100% charged.

I bought a refurbished laptop from a distributor on ebay, who I discovered doesn't know the true meaning of refurbished. But to make the long story short, after I installed a new CMOS battery,
and purchased 2 new laptop batteries because the dead CMOS killed 2 other batteries, I now discovered the laptop will not boot up using just battery power with a full 100% charge.
When I press the power button, the battery LED's light up like it was charging the battery. It's 3 green 1 amber, and it dos this about 4 times before stopping. None of the lock lights, light up (just threw that in there in case it is relevent).

I sourced a "new" motherboard for my dead Latitude C640 from e-bay and now have problem bootning.
The story so far....
The computer worked fine as i left it with the charger in overnight and the next morning it was dead. After surfing the net it was diagnosted that the MB-power part that was dead.
I left the computer lying around for a year and finally found a MB for a resonable price.

I got a defective C640, completely dead, no charging and a charged battery did not work either.
I found a bad solder joint at one of the DC filters located under the PCB just under the DC-jack, easy to resolder . Found also that the videoboard was loose. Now it is working.
But then I had a strange problem, when I put down the cpu heat sink the fan stopped, and when I just lift it a litte bit it started!?
I could not solve this until I installed the speedfan program and marked the Dell square under configure > options and rebooted?
Then I have a leftover, a plastic piece L-shaped 2+3 cm with an hole at one end,

I have been reading about people getting so many hours out of their E6400. I have the 9 cell battery and running the screen on the lowest setting, Bluetooth off and wifi on im getting close to 6 and a half hours of battery life. Is this normal....
I heard about doing a clean install, what does this do, and what benefits would i be achieving by doing this?..
Is there anything else i can do to get a little more juice out of the battery when i need it? I plan to have wifi on most of the time when it is being used. Basic web-surfing and Microsoft word...

my dad gave me his old e6400 as his job paid him a brand new hp elitebook with all the bells and whistles, after checking my new toy, I found out that the battery if pretty much dead.
The bios reports that it's damaged and Ubuntu says it can only hold 25% of the original charge... And it only lasts 20 minutes .

I have a Dell Latitude D620 and I replaced the battery about a year ago. Now the Power Meter reads that the battery is connected and is charging but if I unplug the power,
the laptop immediately shuts off. It seems like the connection may not be good, but I have checked it several times and it looks fine.

I have a Latitude E6400 running Windows 7.
Just booted up my machine: for some reason the battery LED light is flashing. The battery seems to be charging and if I take out the power chord, the computer keeps on running on battery power.
Update: when the battery completed charging, the battery LED just switched off.

I've been reading several user experiences and figured I should join since I'm having several questions/issues with my E6400.
For now my issue is with a 9 Cell battery I purchased from fleabay.
I bought a "Geniune New" battery from a US seller. For some reason the BIOS always reads it at 99%, where as my 6 cell will go to 100%. Is this normal for the 9 cell? Also I noticed the LED light button is much harder to press on the 9 cell compared to the 6.
The only part number I could get from the 9 cell is this:
JP-0FU441-47847-917-J6NP-A01
It has all the Dell markings, recycle numbers etc. It even came with a 9 cell Dell booklet. I just wasn't sure if all these 9 cells register at 99%. My old Inspiron E1505 9 cell also registered at 99%.

We are having a serious problem with the battery that we replaced for one of the Dell laptops. The Laptop model is Dell Latitude `E5530. We were getting a message that the Battery has to be replaced and we bought this battery from one of the third party vendors.
It ran for 2 weeks and now it comes up with some weird messages. The laptop isn't detecting the battery at all. We had sent the battery back to the vendor but he says the battery works fine at their end.

I've recently received a Latitude E6400. The battery is fine working, but I noticed the battery has a series of LED lights on it, and a charging indicator, which presumable should show the charge remaining. The battery charges OK but I never see these indicator lights display anything.
I've read various guides I downloaded for this laptop but can't find any information on the battery lights.

I have a Dell Lat E 5500 - It has been running great for 3 years. Suddenly it says the adapter cord is plugged in, but it is not charging. I have tested this with 2 diferent batteries I got and get the same thing. It just is out of the blue
I also get a warning when I boot up about not being able to recognize the AC Adapter. Not sure what is causing this. Really frustrating.

I'm deciding between T410 and E6410. I know the 6-cell in thinkpad doesn't protrude but does is stick out on E6410? I really do not want to ruin the dimension by using "physically" extended batteries

Dell Latitude D630.... I bought a new battery about 2 months back (had the old one for a good 6 years before it finally bit the dust) and I've had no problems with it. The test button still shows all 5 bright and green. I recently replaced my adapter because it was getting old (almost 3 years) and it stopped charging since part of it's wires were frayed. The new adapter is not charging my computer.
It's Dell made so it shouldn't have a problem with the no-charge chip put in and it's New, not refurbished. I've tried different outlets, restarting computer, updating BIOS, checking battery, and lots of fun stuff in between.
I'm at a loss of what to do because without it charging it, I may as well have just stuck to my old one and saved the money. I'd rather have this issue fixed than never use my battery ever.

After killing my old battery, my Latitude E6500 is refusing to detect the new battery I bought for it. It will run off the battery if I disconnect the AC, but will not charge, I have been using a co-worker's E6500 to recharge it.
I have been instructed to run the E6500 Bios flash, however since the computer does not detect the battery, it will not allow me to proceed with the flash. /forceit does not work. Are there any other command line variables I can use to make the bios upgrade perform without a battery check?

I reinstalled my D620 from scratch (ie. formatted the disk) and reinstalled from the Dell supplied XP Pro media CD. I downloaded and installed all the relevant drivers. I have Intel wireless working, the nVidia card working at 1440x900 etc ... However, I can't seem to get the power/battery management to work. The D620 shows its battery light as green when the AC power is plugged in and the physical battery button lights up all the LEDs when pressed when the battery is partially/fully charged but neither the BIOS nor XP Pro recognize the battery.
Similarly, when the AC power is disconnected the battery works fine by itself for x hours but the power cord icon remains in the the taskbar and the battery light on the laptop glows orange as soon as the power is cord is disconnected. The LEDs on the battery itself however light up when the button is pressed on the physical battery. On reboot the BIOS also does not recognize there is a battery present and not does XP Pro.
In other words, everything works as expected of a laptop - except when totally wireless, how much juice/time I have left in the battery - this is fundamental to any portable device.
A few hours prior to the reinstall both XP Pro and the BIOS recognized the battery no problem and worked accurately and without fault - so I refuse to believe this is a bad battery. Somewhere there must be a driver to enable the BIOS and XP to recognize the battery ?
The battery works and both XP Pro and the BIOS were well aware of its existence prior to the reinstall a couple of hours earlier. All I did was to format the hard drive and initiate a totally fresh install of XP Pro - and installed the drivers downloaded from Dell based on the Service tag of the D620.

I've heard there is a possibility in e6530 laptop to set the battery to only charge to certain level (what would extend li ons battery life). I have updated my bios to A17 in my e6520 but haven't found it.
Is there any way to reach it on my laptop?

As the Lenovo Ultrabay Slim II HDD Bay (for T400/T500...) fits into the Dell Modular Bay,
maybe we can connect an "Advanced UltraBay II Li-Polymer-Battery" into the DELL notebooks.
2700mAh of additional power? About the same Voltage as the primery battery ....

I have a problem with my Latitude E6430 i7-3720QM upgraded to Windows 8,, Bios A09, 8 core...Fan is constantly running and drying the battery out. Tem range between 60-70C. All tests from Dell webpage passed successfully. Tests from Intel Diagnostic tools passed. However, fun is always running, lap top is warm and battery goes down very quickly, in an hour. Under windows 7 it used to last much longer. I even did a clean install of Windows 8 and the problem persists

We have purchased and deployed a number of Latitude E7440's and E7240's and we are running into an issue with some of the E7240's. When waking from sleep while on battery power, the machine will start to wake, the display will come back and I can move the cursor but within a second or two, the cursor will freeze and the machine will become totally unresponsive. This doesn't happen on AC. I've set the power plan to 1 minute and tested over and over again and it is reproducible every time. The only way to recover from it is to power off the machine via the power button and restart it.
Right now this is happening on the original end-user's machine and 1 other deployed E7240 we were able to get back and test. I have a couple of other E7240's deployed and I have an email out to the end users to bring them in so we can check them too.
I've upgraded the BIOS from A09 to A13. I've tried switching wireless control from Intel to Windows. I've updated to the latest drivers on the Dell support site.
Machines are i7, 256GB SSD with 8GB RAM running Windows 7(64) Enterprise

There seems to be a bug in the A06 BIOS update for the Latitude D600. The power supply that shipped with the machine is Model AA22850 for the PA-12 family. This power supply charged the battery fine when I received the computer. I updated the BIOS recently to A06 version and then started receiving a BIOS error upon boot up saying that it did not recognize the power supply. I replied to the error message and went into the BIOS setup and sure enough the battery status was not showing as charging. There green charging LED no longer was lit up and upon going into Windows and looking in the Power options in control panel the battery was not showing charging as well.
We happened to have a power supply for a Latitude D800 at the office and I plugged it in and it started charging the battery immediately. I also did not receive a BIOS error on boot either. That power supply is for the PA-10 family and has more current output. Evidently this new A06 BIOS is looking for that power supply. So....I have to get a larger power supply to have my system now charge.

I have a D510 battery that according to the laptop LED is fully charged however upon booting into windows the battery power indicator and the dell quickset indicator show only 84%i have also let the laptop charge the battery while in windows however even when the charge indicator on the laptop is off and the indicator in the taskbar shows running of the mains the charge is again 84%i have tested the battery health using the inbuilt indicator and it is OK, it is only 12 months old but i am aware that degridation takes place, but could this just be a case of windows not reporting the charge correctly and its nothing to worry aboutthe battery lasts between 2-3 hours on average id say thats goodupdated the battery seems to be stuck charging at 88% is that a sign of simple wear and tear?
