Dell Latitude D630 :: Screen Flickers Goes Blank Requires Reboot
Nov 13, 2014
My work computer will flicker, go blank/black and sometimes I can tap on the battery or the hard drive and it will come back. Sometimes (more times than not) it will require a total reboot. Lately it won't even load. It will load the Dell screen then it says Starting Windows the logo comes on then it goes black. It still loads and everything but I can't see anything. I've replaced the hard drive so I know it's not that. I've loaded the computer in safe mode and I have NO problems with it when it's in safe mode, only when it boots normal. I tried the FN+Power but nothing happened when I tried that the numberlock LED is the only one that stays lit, the others didn't start flashing or anything

I tried upgrading my Latitude's RAM using a 2MB chip first in the rear slot, and Win 7 didn't read any additional RAM (showing only 1GB). So I moved the 2MB chip to the MB under the keyboard and now it won't reboot. I tried to put the original RAM chips back in their respective slots (each 1MB RAM) but it still won't boot.
I guess I can't update the BIOS if it won't boot.

For me it happens when I shut the laptop screen and open it again right away. If I wait a few beats before I open it, the screen lights up again just fine.
But if I open it right away after closing it, the screen goes blank, though the laptop seems to be running just fine.
Hitting Fn-CRT/LCD does nothing, nor do any other of the function keys.
I even tried hooking up an external monitor and banging away at the CRT/LCD combo, but the external monitor is just as blank as the laptop LCD.
Hard power-down will restart the laptop and the screen comes back fine, but you've lost any unsaved work .....

I am having some real issues with a Latitude E5420. It will sometimes boot no problem, maybe 40% of the time.
Most of the time it goes to the dell splash screen and the bar goes to the top then i get a blank screen. No blinking cursor or anything. No HD activity, no CD drive activity.
I can press F2 and get in to the bios, i can press F12 and get to the boot menu but even after selecting a boot option from the boot menu i will still get a blank screen most of the time.
Once the Laptop boots up it runs fine and doesn't report any errors. A memory test has shown no errors. I have replaces the CMOS battery, which was a bit of a nightmare, i have replaced/swapped the memory modules.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on an e6530. I changed a BIOS boot setting from Legacy to UEFI. Now the laptop doesn't even show me a BIOS screen at startup. The screen is backlit, so power is on, but shows nothing. The drive light flickers a few times, but no matter how long I wait, nothing appears.
I can't even switch it back to Legacy because I can't get into the BIOS. Hitting F12 after power on does nothing. Is there some way to get it back to Legacy mode? Or simply reset the BIOS to default settings?

The price of 2nd user Latitude D630's seems to be holding up quite well in the UK. Does this indicate that it is still a popular machine and favoured over the E6400?
I briefly checked out an E6400 the other day and for a choice between machines of approximately similar spec I would opt for the D630 rather than the newer E6400.
I would be interested in opinions from users who have experience with both models.

I've got a choice at the moment between two latitudes:
1) Dell Latitude D630: 2.2ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 120gb HDD, dvd/cdrw drive, vista, nvidia Quaddro GFX
2) Dell Latitude E6500: 2.26ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 80gb HDD, DVDRW, Vista,
Which do you reckon i ought to go for between the two?
The laptop will be used primarily between home and university, so will be taken between the two places in my shoulder messenger bag, so will probably take a few bumps

I've had my E6510 for about 2 months and I am having trouble with a spontaneous shutdown and reboot. There are no errors in the shutdown and the system reboots automatically within a few seconds of shutdown. I'm also experiencing trouble with system freezes. This latter problem may be fixed by an updated bios (as mentioned in another thread), but the shutdown and reboot is about to drive me crazy.
There is no rhyme or reason for it. I had it shutdown once when I pulled out a flashdrive one time, but the other times this was not an issue. Today I was typing an email message when it simply shutdown and rebooted.
It does not seem to be getting hot, but I need to check the LCD as mentioned in another thread.
I should mention this is 64-bit with 8MB RAM, running Windows 7.

I have a Dell Studio 1745 and there is an issue with the magnetic switch. The issue seems to be that the switch itself can't seem to make its mind up whether it has been activated or not. On boot the screen flickers on and off slowly, placing a magnet near the track pad (where the switch is located) increases the rate of the flickering, however it does not solve the problem. Looking inside the laptop the switch seems to be a soldered chip, is there any way to solve this completely? I've connected it to an external monitor, however the picture will only stay on the screen with the magnet in place, removing the magnet causes the picture to come away from the monitor and back to flickering on the laptop.

I have a user with a v515 printer connected by USB cable to a Latitude 5530 laptop. He's running Windows 7 32-bit.
His printer will print one document, and that comes out fine, but it won't print anything else until he reboots the computer. The second document goes into the queue and says "printing" but nothing happens. I tried restarting the print spooler, uninstalling and reinstalling the software and updating the firmware but nothing has worked.

The screen flickers abruptly. And the screen gets garbled as well. But it seems to have really been knocked out today. The temperatures were looking fine at 60C but on a reboot the screen has like six small screen showing up instead of one with the HP logo.
Is my GPU dead? If so what are my options now?

my laptop screen backlight goes off, when I rest my hand on the left side of the touchpad. The darkening of the screen can be also reproduced when a small pressure is applied on the case just above the ethernet port or above the headphones port.
When the screen goes dark, I can see that everything is running normal, if I shine on it with a lamp or strong light. The resulting effect seems to be the same as if I would have lowered the brightness to minimum.
When I don't press the area described above, the screen is just fine. I am sure this problem is not software or OS related. I googled it a lot and my guess is lose connection on the inverter?
One last thing - idk if related - sometimes, when I boot up the laptop, the backlight is turned off and I have to adjust it by pressing F3.

This problem has bothered me since I have installed the windows7 rtm.
i am using integrated graphi card, everytime when the machine wakes up from sleep, and if the external power is unpluged, the screen starts to flicker, and windows 7 reports "displayer driver stopped working and have been recovered", looks like a driver problem, but i have downloaded from the driver from sony website and intel website, none of them solves this problem.

I have a D630 that is still under warranty, but I've been having huge overheating problems with it. (We're talking 160F+ under light load). This is the model with the Nvidia video card.
When I first called Dell, they sent someone to replace the fan and heatsink. That didn't solve the problem. I figured that I was suffering from the notorious Nvidia thermal issue, and they replaced the motherboard. The problem got worse, and they replaced the motherboard again, and the problem got slightly better.
The thing is, I don't actually need an Nvidia video card because I don't do much aside from internet browsing and copying files over the network. I was upset after the fourth time they sent a Dell technician, that I called them and demanded that they replace my Nvidia board with a standard Intel graphics board. They finally agreed.
Yesterday a technician came out with a new motherboard with an Intel video chipset rather than Nvidia, as well as a new heatsink and fan that matches the new board. Now the darn thing is running at 190F at light load!!! it's actually worse than the Nvidia one was!
Do any of you have any clue what the problem might be? I don't even want to use this thing anymore. What's even more interesting is that we've issued about 30+ Intel D630's out to our associates at work, and none of them have any issues. I wonder why it's just mine.

I've owned a D630 for about a year now and have noticed that the bottom of the laptop can get very hot. My dad owned the same model for a couple years and he had multiple hard drive failures. His hypothesis was that the computer might have been overheating and burned out the hard drive.
However, in doing a little research, I heard it's not so much that the computer overheats as it is that the metal frame conducts heat very easily. So while the outside might be hot, the inside isn't at a temperature that's damaging to the parts.
Any experiences with this? Any help would be appreciated. If overheating is a common problem, I'll probably shell out the money for a cooling mat. If it's not a problem, then that's money saved.!

I'm thinking about getting a D630 and installing the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on it. Is there any reason that this won't be an easy process? Do I need any drivers from Dell?
I read here (http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-aud...-no-audio.html) that someone had a problem with audio from a docking station, but apparently it's fixed by installing vista drivers from the Dell website ...

I keep waiting to order my E6400 until all these problems I keep hearing about get resolved. However, it doesn't seem to end. Would I be better off just ordering a D630 and be done with it? These will be discontinued at the end of the year. Right now, it looks like I can save around $300-400 when I configure the D630 similarly. Of course, the D630 doesn't have webcam, maxes out at 4 GB RAM, has a mono speaker, and so forth. But aside from this, isn't it a much more well-tuned machine?
Are the problems I keep hearing about overblown? Will the D630 have its own share of problems?
Is going backwards to the D series a wise choice?

I pushed the Fn and F1 (which I thought would put it to sleep as I do with my ThinkPad) and it shut down. When I tried to restart later I wouldn't. I push the power button and the power light comes on for ~5 sec, the bluetooth flashes the WiFi flashes and then nothing. If I hold the power button down it seems to do this cycle continuously. If I do the same and hold down the Fn button the 3 lock lights are added to the cycle. I have unplugged the power, removed battery (which shows fully charged) held the power button for 20 seconds to clear all residual power. It does the same on AC or battery alone.

In the BIOS on my Latitude D630 there is an option for the CPU to be seen as a single processor or as two processors. The CPU is a T7500 Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz processor.
The BIOS info states that some applications may run faster when it is seen as two processors. Can anyone give me any insight into what these options actually mean in terms of PC performance ?
Also, what types of application would be impacted by the single processor or two processor options ?

I have considered purchasing a Dell latitude D630. I've looked at online retailers such as liquidation.com, ascendtech.us, ebay, amazon...but so far can't find a D630 at the resolution of 1440x900, only at a lower resolution of 1280x800.
So, looks like the only option is to buy a screen sold individually, and upgrade the laptop manually to replace it.
The question is, is it safe to replace a lower-resolution screen with a better one on a laptop?
