Dell Latitude E6440 :: Fan Noise And BIOS Thermal Control

Nov 30, 2013

I just bought a new Latitude E6440 Notebook with an i5-4300M and SSD using it with Linux. I noticed that the fan was continuously spinning until I installed the graphics driver from ATI and switched to the Intel GPU.

Now it is off at the beginning but i kicks in when the CPU temperature reaches ~42C relatively loud and cools down the CPU to about 38C. This behavior is very annoying because the fan is switching on and off every few minutes.

I tried to manage the fan via i8k module and fancontrol but there seems to be some control at BIOS level as my settings are always being overridden. Is it possible to change the default cooling behavior of disable the BIOS thermal control completely so I can manage it in software? I tried the Shift+FN+15324 trick but FN+R does not bring up the menu for me. There is also no option in the BIOS where I can change the fan settings. I am running the latest BIOS A02.Is there any other trick to manage/disable BIOS fan-control or is it possible to include the setting in the next BIOS release?

Dell Latitude E6440 :: Fan Runs Constantly

Mar 5, 2014

I just got a new Latitude E6440. Overall I love the system, but when it is docked / on AC power, I have noticed that I can almost constantly hear the fan. Right now my CPU is only at 6% but I can hear the fan running. Is that just normal behavior with this system? Does it just have a louder fan that runs more often? I just upgraded from an E6410 and I don't recall ever hearing the fan.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro, and it is a brand-new install. I ran diagnostics and did not find any issues.

Sony :: Vaio FW Noise / Fan Control

Feb 25, 2009

I've recently purchased Sony Vaio FW21E (European model) and to my surprise, I find it quite noisy (contrary to what you can read in many reviews).

The first problem is HDD - I've owned 3 notebooks so far and no one had such a noisy disk. I almost thought that there is some kind of motherboard or GPU fan in there until I opened the case to confirm that the noise really comes from the HDD. It is quite unpleasant in a totally quiet room (like in the night) but I can hear it even during evenings when the room is relatively quiet. Vaio owners with Toshiba MK3252GSX disk (320GB), do you experience the same amount of noise? (On the upside, the performance is really nice compared to my older laptops, Windows Experience Index being 5.4.)

The second problem is the main fan (which I understand is the only fan on this Vaio). It is quiet for the first hour of usage or so but then it always turns on for about 5 minutes, then it's quiet for another 2-3 minutes, then it goes off again etc. etc. I really find this annoying because the fan speed is changing frequently and rapidly (i.e. from zero to high spinning, then it slowly goes down to what I would call acceptable level, then it stops rotating immediately; then it goes of for 100% again etc.)

When you combine these 2 noises, the notebook is quite unpleasant to use in quiet conditions. From the right hand side where the disk is placed, you constantly hear a whisper-like sound while from the left side, you are distracted by the main fan which tends to be turned on and off in a few minutes intervals..........

Dell :: BIOS Thermal Management Profiles

Dec 1, 2009

I created this at dell ideastorm:

http://dellideas.force.com/ideaView?...00000000azJAAQ

On the forums, i constantly see people complaining about the heat their laptop produces. Some people (like me) who use their laptop on their lap a lot, prefer to have the fan on constantly, to keep the laptop cool to the touch.

Others, they hate the noise the fan produces so they prefer the laptop to be not so cool, but they want it silent .....

Dell :: Has Anyone Replaced The Thermal Paste / Thermal Pad On A E6400/M2400?

Apr 2, 2009

I have come to grips with the fact that my E6400 (see specs below) has idle temps of around 42 for both CPUs and around 62 for the GPU (while docked).

While these are not dangerous, and while the slow fan speed is very quiet and therefore doesn't bother me, I refuse to accept defeat so easily.

So, I am thinking of replacing the thermal paste and possibly the thermal pad on my E6400. There is at least one person here at the Latitude/Precision sub-forum who did that, with amazing results

Acer :: 6920g Thermal Pad Or Thermal Paste For The Northbridge

Jul 16, 2009

i have a question for everyone who has removed the heatspreader from an acer 6920g. Did the northbridge made contact with the heatspreader by a thermal pad or by a thermal paste ? mine had something that looked like a thermal pad but when i tried to remove it , it tore into small pieces ( i know a thermal pad is not like that ). i used a thermal paste when i put everything back together. Should i open it up again and use a thermal pad for the northbridge ?. In everst in the sensor menu it shows 42 degrees celsius for the motherboard sensor ( i assume that is the northbridge).

Dell :: Latitude E6400/E6500 Owners Fan Noise?

Mar 4, 2009

I'd like to ask any E6400 or E6500 owners about their fan noise as I'm considering those machines right now. I'm thinking of going with the Intel 4500 graphics for hopefully less heat and noise than the Nvidia NV160.

How long does the fan stay off while doing basic web browsing? When it turns on does it ramp up to a slow speed or does it blast on and then ramp down to a slow speed? Does this cycle of off and on continue?

The reason I'm asking is I had a Lenovo Ideapad Y430 that was very irritating regarding fan noise. With basic web browsing or even idling the machine the fan would stay off for about a minute or two and then would blast on when it turned on before ramping down immediately to a slow speed for about a minute. Then it would shut off and this cycle would continue over and over. Was very distracting and annoying when in a quiet environment.

I'd like a fan with either consistent fan noise (stays on at slow speed forever) or with no noise at all (stays off forever). How close is the E6400 or the E6500 to this ideal behavior?

I was amazed when I tried out a Dell Studio 1537 that had a fan that didn't turn on at all while web browsing. I could use it for hours and it wouldn't turn on.

Before I ring Dell has anyone come across this before?

The noise is like a crack and then a smaller click Sounds like a small peice of plastic just broke or something.

The laptop could be sitting there doing nothing for 20 mins and then the noise happens.

Dell :: My Latitude E4200 Starts To Make A Buzzing Noise

Jan 1, 2010

Recently my laptop starts to make a high frequency whining noise, almost constantly and rarely stopped.

I tried to locate the component which the noise was originated from, I can only figure out it's somewhere below the memory module, but there is no moving component there, so my biggest suspect is the fan, because if I put my ear to the back of the laptop, except the whining I also heard very minor "clicking" noise.

Another weird thing is, this noise only starts after Windows is loaded, not in BIOS or during booting, although the fan was running at those times.

Apple :: MacBook -enabled Features That Would Interfere With Privacy - Fan Noise - BIOS- Drivers

Jan 12, 2009

For quite a while my GF has nagged me for a "nice laptop", i.e. a MacBook. With the new models out, the old ones (just before the latest one-piece-thingies) should be easier to find. Most of her friends have one and I am soon getting my bonus, so starting to shop around.

Myself, I am a ThinkPad evangelist (those "ugly, square, black things" according to my GF), and have no trouble picking a used one. With Macs I am basically into uncharted territory, hense my post.

1) I am concerned if the previous owner has enabled features that would interfere with our privacy - remote activation of camera, remote access, etc. How can I check this and make sure she will not participate in some amateur BigBrother?

2) What should I check on a 13 inch MacBook except the obvious battery, fan noise, scratches and dirt beyond normal?

3) Does the Mac have BIOS, drivers, etc. I should upgrade before I hand it to her?

Dell :: BIOS CPU Settings For Latitude D630

The BIOS info states that some applications may run faster when it is seen as two processors. Can anyone give me any insight into what these options actually mean in terms of PC performance ?

Also, what types of application would be impacted by the single processor or two processor options ?

Dell Latitude D620 :: Battery Not Recognized By BIOS Or XP Pro

May 26, 2008

I reinstalled my D620 from scratch (ie. formatted the disk) and reinstalled from the Dell supplied XP Pro media CD. I downloaded and installed all the relevant drivers. I have Intel wireless working, the nVidia card working at 1440x900 etc ... However, I can't seem to get the power/battery management to work. The D620 shows its battery light as green when the AC power is plugged in and the physical battery button lights up all the LEDs when pressed when the battery is partially/fully charged but neither the BIOS nor XP Pro recognize the battery.

Similarly, when the AC power is disconnected the battery works fine by itself for x hours but the power cord icon remains in the the taskbar and the battery light on the laptop glows orange as soon as the power is cord is disconnected. The LEDs on the battery itself however light up when the button is pressed on the physical battery. On reboot the BIOS also does not recognize there is a battery present and not does XP Pro.

In other words, everything works as expected of a laptop - except when totally wireless, how much juice/time I have left in the battery - this is fundamental to any portable device.

A few hours prior to the reinstall both XP Pro and the BIOS recognized the battery no problem and worked  accurately and without fault - so I refuse to believe this is a bad battery. Somewhere there must be a driver to enable the BIOS and XP to recognize the battery ?

The battery works and both XP Pro and the BIOS were well aware of its existence prior to the reinstall a couple of hours earlier. All I did was to format the hard drive and initiate a totally fresh install of XP Pro - and installed the drivers downloaded from Dell based on the Service tag of the D620.
