Dell :: Mini 10v Fast Track?

Dec 2, 2009

So after going through so much fun with my Studio XPS 1645, I can't believe I'm actually considering making another Dell purchase so soon.

Having said that, does anyone have any feedback as to Dell's recent performance with their Fast Track system?

Dell Inspiron 1545 :: F12 Would Skip To Next Track In Playlist

Dec 6, 2014

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. On the keyboard the F1-F12 keys double as multimedia keys - so if you press just F5 for example, you'll raise the screen brightness, but hold Fn and press F5 and it'll be a normal F5 press (e.g. will refresh a webpage).

The Multimedia functions of F10, F11 and F12 are Back, Play/Pause and Forward respectively. These have worked for years, for example if I had a song playing in Windows Media Player and hit F11, it would pause the song. F12 would skip to the next track in the playlist. Recently I must have unknowingly changed a setting somewhere because this no longer seems to work. Bizarrely, every other Multimedia key works, so F5 still raises the screen brightness for example.

Dell :: Latitude E6410/6510 Alps Track Pad Verdict?

May 6, 2010

I just bought an E6410 tonight, thanks to a 30% off coupon I found.

All of a sudden, however, I'm doubting my purchase - specifically because this machine uses an Alps touchpad, whereas the Vostro 3300 I was going to buy (before I found this coupon) uses a Synaptics touchpad.

The last time I had a machine with an Alps pad was in 2004 with my Latitude D600, and that thing sucked. I mean, it was an atrocious piece of hardware.

So what's the verdict on the hardware in the new E64x machines? Is it painful to use? I found a thread talking about using different OEM drivers to improve the responsiveness of the device - is this still necessary?

Just curious to see what current owners think about this. I still don't understand why Dell's been so dead-set on using Alps hardware since the D-series. My old C600 had a Synaptics trackpad, and I loved that thing.

Apple :: MBP - Track Record For Hardware Updates

Mar 6, 2009

Even though the desktop refresh took quite awhile, it is to my understanding that you can expect a refresh with Macbooks and MBP's every 6 to 8 months, which should put the refresh sometime between 8 days from now (unlikely) to 2 months and 8 days from now.

Is that a likely assumption, or am I missing something here. And yes, I am well aware of the CPU speed bump in the top two MBP's, what I am talking about is an all around refresh, with exception to body structure obviously.

Dell :: 6400 - My Laptop Is Not As Fast As It Should Be

Sep 29, 2008

My laptop is not as fast as it should be.

Simple tasks are freezing/stalling for a couple of seconds before they respond. For example, when I open "control panel" it takes about 3-5 seconds to get all the icons up. When I open volume control from the tray, it takes a good 2 seconds to respond to me clicking on the volume bar. Lastly, iTunes has noticably slowed down as well; takes a second or two to respond to my commands.

Maybe im nit picking here, but should simple tasks respond instantaneously?
I have definitely noticed a slowdown since I got this machine 4 weeks ago.

This is all with just iTunes and one or two windows in Firefox open. IE7 is not even an option cuz its so much slower.

For clarity, I have the following:

Core Duo/9400 @2.53
4.00 GB RAM
32-Bit Vista Ultimate

Dell :: Fast Batch File Copy From CDs To External HDD

May 20, 2008

Fast Batch File Copy from CDs to External HDD

I have a whole bunch of data and stuff in "huge number" of old CDs. I want to consolidate them into 2 or 3 1Tb HDDs.

The CDs could be Data, Audio, Bootables.

I could go into Windows Explorer and do the drag & drop / Copy / Paste thing. A couple of issues. Windows Explorer is SLOW, and the STATUS it shows when copying files is not REAL. I'd like a REAL percentage status showing copier.

Something that helps me spend the least amount of time, attention on making this happen. Minimum Intervention.

Ideally it would be a program / app that does the following:

1 - Does fast copying

2 - Automatically creates new folders in a specified location as it copies & places the content of the next CD

3 - Prior to copying it asks what MODE the CD needs to be backed up >
ISO, Simple File Copy, Audio (Raw / mp3), "Name the Folder".

4 - Copies showing REAL status and REAL (estimated) time left until this one is complete

5- Once completed with one CD / Disk
> It NOTIFIES with Visual / Sound clue
> EJECTS the Disk
> Prompts again for next disk
> Asks same "WHAT KIND OF COPY" question for the next disk.
> Does this until all Disks are backed up - Like a BATCH of them are done.

Does some kind of Cataloging as it copies. Maybe asks for Categories / Labels / Tags.

Dell :: Fast Access (face Recognition) CPU Usage

Feb 2, 2010

I notice that the FAservice (Fast access) uses more than 1% of the CPU all the time. That is too much for me. Such a service should be near 0% as the welcome page is off.

Do you experience the same thing?

I don't uninstall it at the moment but if I can't find a solution I will do to not short my time on batteries soon.

Dell :: Inspiron 1545: Fast Typing In Webmail Results In Missing Letters

Problem: I have a brand new Inspiron 1545 from Dell online. When I type text in Internet Explorer (e.g. webmail applications or this forum), even at a relatively slow speed, many of the keys don't seem to register --

that is, letters or spaces whose keys I press do not show up on the screen. As a result, I must type verrry slowly to make sure that every letter/space shows up, or else go back to re-type it. Strangely, I do not have this problem when typing text in, say, Notepad .....

Dell XPS 14 :: UltraBook Started To Make Quiet Fast-paced Clicking Noise Inside It

Mar 3, 2013

I've recently purchased the Dell XPS 14 ultrabook and it is probably just about two months old now. Everything was so perfect until just yesterday the laptop started to make a quiet fast-paced clicking noise inside it. I don't know where it is coming from but all I know is that the noise is definitely inside the laptop. It starts usually about 2-3 minutes after turning the laptop on and then lasts for about 1-3 minutes. Is this normal? And is there a way to stop this noise? I know its just something little but I just think it's not normal to have this problem for such a new laptop.

Lenovo X / Helix Tablet :: What Does A Fast Blinking LED On ThinkPad Keyboard Mean

May 10, 2013

I checked the PDF manual and don't see this condition. The scenario is my Helix is docked to its keyboard, plugged in and asleep. The "i" LED is slow blinking (sleep mode). I open the lid (which is set to wake up the Helix) and the dot on the tablet goes solid red (on) but the "dot" on the keyboard is doing a fast-blink. It's done this about three times over the month I've had my Helix.

I should add that manually putting the Helix to sleep, then waking it back up, clears the flashing LED on the keyboard.

Lenovo X Series ThinkPad :: Windows 8.1 Fast Startup On X220

Nov 21, 2014

Having some troubles with my X220 and windows 8.1 and fast startup.

It has been working flawlessly for a few months now with Windows 8 and an SSD but has recently decided it does not want to fast startup - every time I try and boot with the feature enabled the laptop immediately shuts off completely after the boot animation. On pressing the power button again the laptop boots 'normally' i.e. at 'normal' startup speed.

I've tried disabling the feature, using the 'powercfg -h off' and 'powercfg -h on' commands to recreate hiberfil.sys and enabling it again, which worked at first but now it has started having the problem again and this no longer works.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad Y580 Shutdown And Fast Startup

Oct 27, 2013

I have a problem with shutting down my computer. While it seems like the system is closed and the screen goes black, the laptop is still working (power button still glows white and ventilators are on). The only way to shut it down completely is by holding the power button for 5 seconds.

My specs are: Intel Core i7-3630QM, 1TB HDD (560GB free), 16GB SSD, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 660M

In last month my laptop used to be working for 4-5 days in a row, and only today did I notice that it won't shut down. I did some research and found out that the feature called "Fast Startup" is responsible for this - disabling it with Energy Management resolves the problem, and the laptop shuts down nicely, while re-enabling it makes the problem return.
I also found out that the Fast Startup feature (while enabled) creates(/modifies?) a file called "hiberfil.sys" which stores data about my current session and then shuts down the laptop completely.

So apparently there is something wrong about this file or the process of creation/modification of it (I'm not sure how it works) when I try to shut down my laptop. Or even it might be not about that file, but some 3-rd party process which blocks the creation/modification of it?

So my question is what can I do to solve this problem withoutdisabling the Fast Startup feature (I mean disabling it costs me like additional 40 second during turning my computer on, which is not much, but the pure fact that I have to disable this means I have some problems with my laptop).

PS. I ran the "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" command, restarted the laptop, then ran the "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" command, in hope of clean-creation of hiberfil.sys file, but it did not work (maybe there is a way of manually deleting it in order to automatical re-creation of the file during the next shut-down?).

The only thing on my mind now is leaving the laptop "shut down" for a night - maybe that file is so large it needs a lot of time to be created/modified, but that wouldn't explain why shutting down my laptop in the previous 7 months has been taking only like 5-7 second, not the whole night.
