Dell :: Permanent SpeedStep Enabled
May 13, 2008
Here is a brief description of my problem. I have a e1505 w/ a Core Duo (1.66GHz, T2300) My power adapter is reported to me "unknown" by the laptop. (total BS as i know the thing works) and then QuickSet tells me my battery needs to be replaced (this was too soon, so it leads me to believe that the power adapter did something to the battery) But I can't replace those right now. So i'm stuck at a multiplier of 6 (and yes i've disabled all the power saving features in the bios, but the wired thing is windows reports the real speed while other programs such as CoreTemp and CPU-Z report it at being just under 1GHz?)
And to get these things brand new would cost ~$120 (battery and adapter) So is there anyway I can get around the stupid limitation dell has imposed until i can find replacements for these? And, where is a good place to get replacements that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

I've got a new Dell XPS 15 four days ago. I've been having a lot of issues with its internal mSSD drive. The model I ordered has a regular 1TB hard disk and a 128 SSD. I was quite surprised to discover that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (that allow faster data access by using the SSD as cache) is not enabled by default. I tried to enable it but no success. An "unknown error" message box showed up when I attempted to do so. That was really strange, considering that the only thing that I've done so far in my computer was installing MS Office and Google Chrome.I contacted the tech support three days ago and I was told to reset my computer to factory default and try again. After a long wait for system restoration I enabled the acceleration mode in the Intel Rapid Storage software.
Everything proceeded according to expected, but when I rebooted my computer it failed to detect any bootable device. I can't even access the system restoration by pressing F8 during initialization now. especially when we consider that this shouldn't be happening in a premium $1,999 model. Also, shouldn't this KEY feature (caching with SSD) be enabled out of the box?

I just run some test on my my Z46 (P9700 2.8Ghz) and found there is something unusual.
I set the Vista power manager profile to high performance which suppose to give me the max speed of the CPU settings and I check with CPU-z and the reading was 2793.2Mhz which is correct ... however when I try to run some CPU stress test it CPU-z shows the multiplier jump back to x6 (suppose 10.5) and the core speed reduce to 1.6Ghz. And then I start notice whenever I have the CPU on full load it will switch to 1.6 Ghz instead of 2.8Ghz...
I tried it with different software and same happen.. I also monitor the temperature and it's only 65-68 which is normal to me...
I just can't figure out why the CORE speed would drop when it suppose demand the highest speed..
Is it just my Z46 or anything have the same happen ?...

So my media keys decided to stop working again. I know the current solution is to pull out the battery and hold down the power key to drain the power.
However, this is probably the 5th or 6th time the media keys went dead again. What is the cause of the problem

I've had a Dell Studio 1537 P8400 @ 2.26 GHz with 3 GB ram, Vista 32-bit OS since December last year, and only in the past couple of months have i had a few problems, much to my disappointment that Dell hasn't increased their quality..
I've noticed a little "blemish" behind the screen, like a little cluster of dust 0.5mm in diameter, but its BEHIND the text and graphics...quite strange but such a pain as its in the middle-left of the screen..there's also another, half the size right up the top..

I have a XPS M1530. It's 2 years old now.
the problem is on the housing of the laptop. I have a white foggy/permanent whipe on 2 sides under my keyboard.
I don't know what dell's housing material is, but this is really strange.

I was wondering if there is a permanent way to disable the touchpad on this y510p. I hate hitting fn f6 every boot, wake from sleep, etc.
I checked the registry in hklm microsoft windows currentversion run but didn't see any prefixes of syn* in any of the entries. I checked into RTFTrack.exe and that seems to be the camera. Is there a way I can disable this touchpad permanently?

Been using XPS15 for just over a year and am getting a "battery has permanent failure - need to replace battery" message....
I've rarely even used this current laptop without using power, so the battery seems to have died a bit too soon?
Is there a particular Dell battery I can buy that should last a bit longer?

I just got a new Elitebook 6930p and its a fantastic laptop other than the dreaded "CPU whine" as some call it. Most uneducated people believe it is the CPU that makes this noise but in reality this has NOTHING to do with the CPU. Its the power components like capacitors and coils that make the Piezoelectric Effect which causes the noise.
I could not bear the whine noise after a few days so I took matters into my own hands. Sure I read about stopping the C1-C4 states in Intels speedstep but thats not a proper solution IMO since battery life will suffer. So how can we mask or cover up this annoying noise? How can we seal it inside the laptop so it does not reach our ears? I have the solution!
tube.JPG
Seal it up all the power components with silicon sealer. Silicon sealer is perfect as it does not conduct electricity. These components do NOT generate any heat either.

Just received my XPS 14 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I would like to use Windows 7 on the laptop instead. I was able to install Windows 7 just fine but I am not able to get SRT working on there. I have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application installed but the Accelerate button is not showing up for me.
When installed Windows 7 with SRT enabled in the BIOS and loaded the driver so that both drives (mSATA and SATA) are seen. I installed the OS on the non-SSD SATA drive and left the mSATA alone. After installing Windows 7, I loaded the drivers and application software for RST but the Accelerate button still doesn't show up. Both drives shows up in RST application. how to get the Accelerate button to show up so that I may use the mSATA SSD drive for caching?

BIOS updates for many models to enable VT. Some showed up in US site, like FW590, but others are listed in oversea.
Like the FW290J that I have, can use R1100Y0 BIOS update. Basically look for last 2 characters of your current BIOS version then see what's available.
Here is a link from oversea:

I bought a Vostro 3750 last year for my wife and it didn't get used except twice. I never paid much attention to it until I turned it on this morning. I noticed the battery light blinks one white and 4 red signifying it was not charging. How do I enable battery charging on this model? I checked the documentation and did not see anything there. I guessing its the FN + one other key?

I'm looking at picking up an AS1810T to replace my Samsung NC10 netbook and my HP DV8230US laptop.
I was looking at an MSI earlier due to its better warranty (3 years) and better price ($450 as opposed to $600)...but unfortunately, the lack of VT on the T6600 is a deal-breaker.
Does Acer have Virtualization enabled on the AS1810T? The SU7300 has it, but I want to make sure that there's nothing else that would prevent me from being able to use the laptop properly...as VMWare and XP Mode are requirements for what I'll be doing with it.

I bought a sony vaio Z620D more than a month ago. Before hand, I never knew that VT is disabled and not configurable in the Sony Vaio Z series. So without this knowledge, I proceeded to installl VMWare workstation on my laptop along with a couple of virtual machines, which includes Windows XP, ubuntu desktop client and ubuntu server.
However, not only until recently that after I installed Windows 7 and then proceed to install Windows Virtual PC for the Windows XP mode that I noticed my VT is disabled all the time. So naturally, I went into the bios of my z620 and just as everyone said, the option to enable VT was no where to be found.
This is the part that confuses me the most, I have been working under virtual environment for around a month now and there are no problems. But when I try to run Windows Virtual PC, I'd get this error saying my VT is disabled. To further complicate the matter, I downloaded this program called Securable which checks if my VT is enabled or not. Surprising, it reports that my VT is enabled.

I just got a dv4t shipped from hp with 2.53 gigahertz, 4 gigs ram, and integrated graphics and I seem to be having a problem. After about half an hour to 40 minutes of talking on skype with video, with firefox and maybe a folder or two open, aero enabled, opening just one more app that isn't even too processor intensive such as the task manager or device manager, I suddenly get a message stating aero needs to shut off and my webcam stops working. The only way to fix it seems to be to shut down skype. After I do that everything is restored.

I have almost applied all methods. I have checked bluetooth is enabled in the bios settings. And also I applied the method of services.msc in command prompt.
I pressed Fn + F2 during installation but bluetooth option is not going to be on. I do not think why it is giving that problem. I have uninstalled the drivers now.

Yesterday I flashed the firmware of my XPS L702X to version A19, which enabled UEFI boot mode. I decided to go ahead and try to install Windows 7 in UEFI mode on a GPT disk. Installation succeeded, booting failed however. Then I read a message on the web from someone who succesfully installed Windows 8 on the same machine in UEFI boot mode on a GPT disk. So I decided to try Windows 8 instead. Installation failed. Using the recovery menu from the Windows 8 installation media, I wanted to try and see how far installation had come and more or less accidentally selected in some "Advanced options" menu to reboot to my USB flash drive (where the Windows 8 files were on). Rebooted fine. Then I shutdown, using the regular option.
When I turned on my machine again, I found out that pressing either F2 or F12, for the firmware setup and the boot menu, respectively, didn't work anymore. The firmware recognised my input, as the text in the lower right of the Dell splash screen became lighter, but instead of entering setup or the boot menu went straight ahead to boot my existing and working Windows 7 installation on my first (MBR) hard drive instead.
So, in short, I am locked out of setup and the boot menu. I have already tried reflashing the firmware, but without any luck. What to do now?

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1. My computer's product number is XZ046UA#ABA.
Do I need to install a new driver, or something else?
