Dell :: SXPS 16 Gets SOOO Hot Near The Trackpad!
Apr 26, 2009
I'm on my 2nd SXPS 16 (first one had dust under the glass) and on both systems the trackpad gets very hot even when I'm barely using the computer! Is there anything I can do to get the heat down? Is there a application that allows me to increase fan speed?
It really get uncomfortably hot even when it's just sitting on my desk with no programs running (and I have the 256GB SSD which I thought would reduce heat!). I also know this isn't an issue with the computer b/c the original one I had, had the same issue

I have been experiencing two issues and wanted to see if anyone has experienced this issues also and have a solution for them.
Audio- The audio will stop working. Causes Flash to crash. Rebooting computer fixes the issue temporary . Seems to happen sometimes after resuming from standby or/and hibernation. My temporary fix is just to use the windows audio drivers versus the IDT drivers.
Trackpad- After sometimes resuming from standby or/and hibernation the trackpad will cease to work. If I put the laptop back into standby or/and hibernation then take it out again it will usually work again. Although sometimes I have to do it a few times.
Video- DirectX seems to stop working mysteriously. My screen saver won't even play! Usually fiddling with the video drivers or restarting a few times fixes it temporary.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? Any solutions/ideas? I have reinstalled the drivers many times and even the entire Operating System. I don't recall these errors in Vista.

This is interesting... a friend of mine just tried to order the SXPS with the i7-820 processor and got denied by Dell. Apparently, the 1645 has been fully discontinued, and Dell will no longer be placing the i7-820 processor in any SXPS form factor. They quoted that due to hardware and power issues as the reason behind discontinuing the 1645 (and replacing it with the 1647) and killing i7-820 support. The sales rep said the only offering will be the Studio series for the i7-820.
As a 1645 owner with the i7-820, this is kinda scary that this laptop has been discontinued this quickly as well as the offering of the 820 series chip. We ended up calling a second time, and another sales rep confirmed the same story.
Anyone get similar information from Dell on this? I'm also wondering if this is a "Dell Canada" thing...

I just got my xps 1647, but where's the scroll function in the trackpad? It is very inconvenient when I'm reading big webpages.

my track pad on my M1530. I have sometime when I will run my finger across the track pad but the cursor with not move. It will jitter a little bit but will do nothing else. Then after a couple seconds, and sometime a hit on the palm rest, it will work again. It has happened probably the whole time I have had the laptop( 7 months), and now it seems to be occurring more frequently. Also, for the whole time I have had the laptop, the track pad will not always register a tap on it as a click, it just sits there like I did nothing. I know that could be a setting, but I have messed with them the best I can and it has changed nothing. Do you think this could be a driver issue, I have updated the driver since I got the laptop, or could it be bad hardware that came with the laptop. I have a complete care warranty, so they would probably replace it no problem, and I am already going to have the motherboard replaced because of a broken clip on the Ethernet port.

I am running the E6400 on Vista Ultimate x64 with the 7.102.101.216 trackpad drivers.
Every so often (probably once week) the trackpad will stop functioning: the buttons keep working but the pointer does not move. At that point the only thing I can do is to shut down and reboot. There doesn't seem anything systematic about what I am doing before to trigger this.
I normally have the pointing stick switched off, I've turned it back on to see how that interacts

I'm used to the trackpad of the Inspiron 8600 which is accurate and responsive. By comparison the trackpad of the E6500 is not very responsive.
I can move my finger 1/3 of the way across the trackpad before the cursor responds, and even then the cursor will lag behind my fingertip.

I'm using either a usb or bluetooth mouse with my new XPS 15z, and i'm getting tired of a problem...
The trackpad is impossible to shut down for good... i mean: indeed you can disable it, turn it off, and even tell it to turn off when usb mouse is plugged, but it never really does, it always, always, always stays on for a second before shutting down...
In other words: my trackpad is disabled, both buttons and touch, and i use a bluetooth mouse. but even it is disabled, if i pass my fingers on it, the cursor moves for 1cm before shutting down... then i wait 2 minutes, and i pass my fingers on it again, and then again the cursor moves 1 cm before stopping moving.
So it is never really shut down, with the consequence i never can type text without my hand touching it and putting the cursor somewhere in the page and i have to put the cursor back to where it was,
For example it happened 5 times when typing this very text....
I have updated the cypress trackpad drivers to last up to date version...

Suddenly, after a year of use, the Cypress trackpad has become inaccurate. The pointer judders when I move it across the screen and when I tap to open or close something or anywhere on the screen, the pointer move slightly (usually up and to right by a small amount) when I tap. This is frustrating when trying to do simple tasks. This is not caused by a change in senstivity on the trackpad. I have checked all the defaults settings in case something changed. I am running Windows 7 on a XPS 15z.

Does anyone know of any option to enable two-finger trackpad scrolling on the M4400's Alps trackpad under Windows 7?
I've seen the "2 finger" software hack for Synaptic trackpads, but that doesn't apparently work on these Alps trackpads .....

My friend is very cheap and will not get a new computer. He has a dell lat. D520. I wiped everything and installed all the drivers from the dell website for the laptop.
Everything works great until you have to type or move the trackpad. It tends to jump around or insert other letters then the one chosen. But a usb external keyboard works fine!
I called dell and said that he doesnt have any warranty and said maybe the buttons were stuck? Should he order a new keyboard for 50 bucks?

I just bought this so called Ultrabook a few days ago and already encountering trackpad issues. It only started happening since yesterday, but figured out then when you plug in the AC Adapter to charge the battery, The trackpad begins to lag or stop working all together.
Yesterday, the trackpad fixed itself somehow so I ignored it, but tonight as I was working on some uni assignments, my laptop battery was low so I plugged it in. The trackpad immediately stopped working and I could no longer work. I "Googled" to no avail, I downloaded the new driver for Cypress, but that too did not work.

This sticker (the one saying "regulatory information...." in 50 languages)
would NOT come off by trying to pick at the corners. It was leaving the sticky part on.
When I pulled at the "tab" built into the sticker, I got that off but it left the whole rectangle sticky part on the laptop. In other words, the whole printed part of the sticker came off leaving all the clear sticky material on the palm rest still.
I kept picking at the corners trying to grab them but no luck.
What finally worked was sliding my fingers while pushing on the surface of the palmrest, upward, into the bottom of the sticker. In other words, press your finger on the plastic of the laptop just below the sticky stuff left behind. Keep sliding your finger while pushing on the plastic INTO the bottom line of the sticky part. It will eventually start to roll up. Do this all along the bottom edge of the sticky part and eventually you can grab the "rolled up edge" and pull at it. It should then pull off in one piece. There will be little tiny sticky marks left on the plastic but they come right up when you place the sticky rectangle piece down onto it and pull fast up.

1) What type of keyboard does the Studio xps 1640 have, is it chicklet? And is it good to type on. IS it better than the xps m530's keyboard.
2) Are their any anoying dell stickers on it that will just peel off like on the m1530's hinge?
3) Does the lid say XPS like the m1530?
4) How is the trackpad is it too small like the xps m1530? I found the trackpad to be too small for me

It is probably a little to early to ask, but does anyone know if the Backlit Keyboard and Trackpad from the Studio XPS can swap into the regular XPS M series?
Even if the backlighting didn't work, my main gripe is the silver keyboard, which is difficult to read under airplane lighting. Black keyboard with white fonts are much better.

Yesterday while I was working on a spreadsheet, the left button of my trackpad on my Dell XPS 15z just mysteriously stopped working. I assumed that maybe my system was slowing down, as I tend to multitask and often will have a LOT going on at once. So I restarted, since it had been about a three days since my system was restarted. Anyway, it did no good. Still, the left button wasn't working.
So, I then pressed it SUPER hard and it started working. Today, I noticed that it was messing up again. However now, depressing the key good and hard doesn't seem to magically fix the situation. Moreover, it doesn't work at all now instead of intermittent workability.
There wasn't any sort of update or anything... I'm really confused. Right button has no issues, but clearly I need both. Not sure what I should do.

I am really satisfied with this baby.
however, i am experiencing a minor trackpad problem, and wondering if it's only my laptop that has this problem.
The trackpad of NW240 isn't as smooth as my previous laptops.

I have a Unibody MacBook (Spring 2008) and i'm having some major difficulties with this trackpad. It seems to have a huge problem "hanging onto" items I want to move. I have simply given up on trying to drag anything to where I want it. Take for example in Mail, I'll try to move a message from one folder to another and i'll click on the message and it randomly release it into different folder. It will only sometimes "pick" up the message and when it does it randomly "drops" the messege where ever the mouse is. This also happens with windows, it'll sometime take me 5-6 tries to move a window from one side of my screen to the other because the trackpad it will simply not grab the window to move it, and when it does it just "drops" the window a few centimeters from where I grabbed it. And highlighting text is completely impossible since it requires some form of precision.
Now this is not user error as what it might seem from the rather large trackpad. I have tried every conceivable option, from moving my hands completely off the computer while I try to do things with my trackpad.
Does this seem like a hardware issue or a software issue, and does this mean I need to get it checked out by an Apple store.

Seriously sick of randomly clicking because my hands are too fat. I know that my previous dell had an option where it would automatically shut off the trackpad if an external mouse was detected. Is that available on the 13?

The new Z is probably the only laptop that I would give my 13" MBP for. I'm glad Sony added a backlit keyboard but can anyone comment on the trackpad's multi-touch behavior?
Does it have two finger scrolling and browsing? Is it as smooth as MBP?

I'm looking at a 14in CW and I have a few questions:
1. How is the keyboards/trackpad?
2. What does the "crystal rain white" look like in person?
3. How is the 330 in games like CounterStrike and WoW?
4. What is the resolution? I assume 1366x768?

I'm having a Dell XPS L321X and the trackpad is totally laggy compared to a macbook. I'm using Win8 and installed the win8 driver and the two finger scroll has a delay of half a second.
I tried the newer Win7 Cypress Touchpad Drivers... the same laggy problem.
Any new drivers available?
Beside of that, i still have my fan problem: [URL] ....

I have not had good luck with my SZ series notebooks in that the first one stopped responding to touch properly, and this one the left button needs quite firm presses to work correctly.
Is it possible to replace or fix just that one component or is it an assembly including the right button and the trackpad as well? Does anyone know the part number and where I might be able to find it along with a guide for replacing it?

Today my 2 week old laptop was closed, put into a fully padded laptop bag, Velcro strap over to hold it in place. Nothing else in the bag. Put in car, drove 80 miles, took out of car and setup. It noticed a small mark on the screen right where the screen folds down to the track pad. It seems the Back ridge of the track pad, has pushed onto the screen creating this mark.
