Dell Studio XPS 1640 :: Black Screen But Keyboard Lights Up
Jan 9, 2013
I have had my Dell studio xps 1640 for around 2 years now, apart from the common overheating problems has been working fine.
Last night i powered down as usual after watching some live stream football, this morning went to start up again and the keyboard lights up & can hear the fan running but getting completely blank, black screen. It seems windows isn't loading up either as if i push the power button again it shuts down instantly.
I have always kept the inside clean and free of dust and really need to know what may need repairing. Could it be a Graphic or video card or Motherboard problem.
I have also tried the usual checks of memory but have not tried to get display via vgi or hdmi in to another monitor.
My Dell Inspiron 14 1440 froze and i decided to manually turn it on and back on. I pushed, and held the power button until it turned off. Once it turned off i decided to take the battery out (for no apparent reason). So i took it out and put it back it (i didn't really touch anything). Once i put it back in i tried turning it on by pressing the power button, but it wouldn't turn on. The screen is black, there are no blue lights that are on. (These lights are on when you turn the laptop on).I tried the taking out the battery and hold power button for 30-60secs trick, but no luck. I also have taken out my laptop's ram and re-inserted it (same with my hard drive). Oh and my battery is fully charged. I tried searching the net for solutions but no one really has the same problem as me. Most of the other people with problems said they could hear the fan, but with mine there is noting. No sound. No lights. No working laptop just one really expensive door stop.
Suddenly one morning when switching on the laptop it just was a black screen nothing else, I have already had the graphics card replaced so checked the ram by trying different combinations etc but still nothing.
I did the FN + Power test and it does its thing but then it beeps loudly 3 times while flashing caps lock, scroll lock & num lock together at the same time,,,,then it does a random tune and flashes more. I have attached a video to show it exactly.
I have a compaq presario CQ61-420US with similar problems below, except I have a black screen, fan turns blinking lights are the same (num lock and cap lock) but they are flashing continuously every second or 2. I have tried the hard reset with the ram fix, connecting an external monitor, changing the battery, and the power adapter to no avail. I also used compressed air on the vents just in case was stuffed with dust since it will overheat and may cause problems, but nothing.
One option I can think of is purchasing a new MotherBoard, but I'm trying anything else before that.
Got windows 7 on my g555, with truecrypt on the drive, if it matters. Last night, closed down the cover of my laptop before i fell asleep, like always, today it doesn't respond at all when I opened it back up. Forced it to shut down, and haven't seen anything but a black screen since.
The power light comes on, the fan comes on, and that's about it. Can't get to the bios, can't do ANYTHING. Tried unplugging it for a while, pressing power 10 times, holding power down for a minute, ran the battery entirely dry THEN discharged the caps, ...I've read many solutions where its the built up static charge that's the problem, but not here. I've tried all versions of the solution I could find, all very similar, but none worked. I took out my RAM and put it back in, and same for the hard drive. No dice.
The only lights I get at all are the power light, and the battery charging light next to it. Can't get the CAPS LOCK, num lock, any of that to do anything. Cannot boot by CD/DVD as I cannot change the bios, and can't get any response from any keys or key combos that I can think of (including the one-touch restore).
I have a problem with my Compaq Presario CQ61-325ED. It won't boot. What I see is a black/blank screen, with the numlock and capslock lights blinking twice every couple of seconds.
According to the blink codes, it seems the BIOS has been corrupted [URL] .... Sadly, no adequate solution is given on that page.Win + B or Fn + B at startup does nothing, pressing all the arrow keys gives me a continuous blinking pattern (edit: I can't seem to replicate this anymore...). I have also tried creating a bootable USB-stick with a BIOS update, but I don't think I have done it correctly, for it never gets activated (the light on the USB never turns on).
Also, removing/resetting the RAMs or just one of the RAMs does not work. Neither does removing/resetting the CMOS battery. How to successfully create a bootable USB-stick with BIOS update for CQ61-325ED?
im looking for a keyboard overlay, you know like screen protector for my keyboard, there was a link to purchase them off ebay months ago but its now a invalid item.
I have a Studio 1558 laptop running Windows 7. Recently, when I open an application (ex. Microsoft Word, McAfee, Excel), the screen fades to black, stays black for 2-3 seconds, then pops back up. It has happened at a few other times too, but I don't recall the specific circumstances. The laptop is 2 1/2 years old, unfortunately out of warranty ....
Was happily surfing on my Studio XPS today when I spotted this: At first I thought a component must be overheating inside the laptop but it's above the CD drive which I hardly ever use. What the heck could have got that hot to melt a couple of keys! I don't think I will be using the laptop on my lap any more.
Perhaps some of you have more experience with this than I do, so I thought I'd ask.
I know the 1640 has DisplayPort, VGA and HDMI outs -- my question is this: Can I run two external monitors with this laptop using the outputs --
I'd like to run 2 24" (1900x1200) from the 1640 -- I don't really care if the internal LCD works when I have it plugged it -- I'm just looking for a psuedo-docking solution when I'm at home at my desk
Notebook used very little, so jam shocked at the dysfunction I've experience since a recent windows update. Was looped in a repair function, and I was able to restore. Now it powers on, fan runs but black screen and no keyboard function.
My xps 1640 has been going strong until today for 5years +. I haven't even replaced the battery yet and it still works incredibly well, quite amazing I'd say. However, I've spent countless hours today trying to troubleshoot this issue and I can't even find a proper e-mail to contact dell with. I don't have warranty on it anymore but this is something that should be covered regardless of the limited warranty. The laptop is still in quite good state, I've never dropped it and I've maintained it properly throughout it's years. Aside from minor wear on the edges and the side lights not working anymore I have no issues with it. I was considering even upgrading the ram and ssd since it's my main workstation at the moment.
Anyways, I'll restate the problem: Computer turns on fine, no issues, if I move the screen up and down, 90% of the time there's a specific angle that it will trigger the notebook to turn off completely. It will start right up again if I press and hold the button, but otherwise it turns off instantly. This is not a sleep feature or anything, it's happening before and after I'm in Windows. I got through a day long's train ride and had no problems with this, I got into my apartment, booted it up, tried to readjust the screen and boom on the same day...
I feel like the keyboard on my SXPS13 was MUCH brighter than the keyboard on my SXPS16.
I also had an icon pop up on the RHS of the screen that told me the keyboard light level (it would pop up when changing intensity 'off', '1', and '2').
I don't have an icon pop up on the 16, and the keyboard looks much dimmer overall.
This is the second time I have had this issue. I have already had the motherboard and power supply/cable replaced and it worked for awhile. Here is the issue.
- Occasionally after powering down, the next time I try to power up, the laptop does nothing but show the power light on. No Dell screen, no back lights on the keyboard, nothing else. I press and hold the power button down and after 5 seconds it shuts the light off. I would then try it again with the same result. I let the battery completely drain; plug the power cord back in and after about 5 minutes of charging, try it again. This seemed to work until one day it did not. Then I had the motherboard and power supply replaced and all seemed well. Now, 6-8 weeks later I have the same problem again. A new L421X purchased in December 2012 with 512GB SSD running Windows 8 64 bit. I use this for business and am about to throw it out the window.
Currently, I have tried the power up, drain power trick with no results. It is dead with all my business info on the drive. I am about to dump Dell and switch to HP.
When I switch on my laptop, I can hear the noise as if it is running however, cannot see anything. I know it isn't the screen and have a feeling it is the motherboard /graphics card (I use a lot of 3D/graphics software). I want it to last me at least another 6-8 months before purchasing a new laptop.
I’ve got a Del Studio 1753 laptop and I use it with a separate LG flatron w2486L screen. The cable recently came out of the VGA port and when I plugged it back in there is now a black strip at each side of the screen and the image doesn’t go across the full width any more. In display settings I’ve got the monitor set at the highest resolution possible, 1440x900, but this makes no difference (I’m on Windows 7).
I was using my Studio 1537 when it suddenly shut down. I rebooted and the console media lights lit up and it sounded like it was restarting as normal but the screen remained black. I have tried a number of internet: restarting holding F12, restarting holding Fn+F8, removing battery and AC power & holding power key for 30 seconds - 1 minute and then restarting and also holding D while restarting to run screen diagnostics. I can see the coloured screens flash through but none of these ideas have restarted the monitor it remains black.
I got the "ATI display driver has stopped responding and has recovered from an error" several times over the last couple of days where my screen would freeze for a couple of second and then start working again and would display that message. I thought little of it as it did always seem to work afterwards.
Last night however it got extremely frequent happening at least once a minute and i decided to try and restart my computer to see if that would work. Now when I try to turn the computer on the screen stays black and will not do anything. I can hear that the computer trying to work as the fans are going and the power light is on, it's just the screen that isn't working.
[URL] ...
I found these guides on how to fix the error message but at the moment both are no good as I can't even use my computer to fix the problem as the screen won't work.
I am pretty sure the reason my computer is doing this is because of outdated drivers as I recently did a fresh install of windows and only installed the drivers that came on the CD I was given with my computer. I should have downloaded the latest drivers online.
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I am unsure of the graphics card at the moment as I can't access the computer but I know that it is an ATI of some sort.
I got my laptop three or four years ago and today the screen just stopped working. First it faded white, then it came back on but faded black/white and now is not working at all. It stays black through startup and when it reaches the login page it is just a bunch of vertical lines.
My studio 1555 plays 6 beeps and shows a black screen wen i turn it on.
when it was working i was having a few problems with the video card as i kept getting a blue screen saying about it being faulty but i had ignored it and now the laptop wont work at all.
I have read on the internet and it sounds like the video card is built into the motherboard.
how do i find out which motherboard will fit in to replace and will it have the video card inside.
I have a big problem with my dell studio 1457 latptop... It's starts smoothly, run through BIOS and stops with black screen and UNREGISTERED EXCEPTION HANDLER information. I can not boot from any device [checked cd, usb key, hd, even floppy drive](BIOS seeing HD and DVD drive, in boot menu [f12] I can see usb key and floppy too]It's checking all devices at the start, but looks like loosing ability to connect with any of them after whole BIOS sequence is done. Therefore I can't flash BIOS or will I have to replace B chip?
I noticed that i have small marks on my screen which match the layout of the middle of the keyboard keys.
It is impossible to see these marks when the laptop is turned on.
However when off and with the screen open, tilt the laptop away from you so you can just about see the underneath of the laptop.
At this sort of angle i can see little imprints on the screen. Luckily they dont appear to be scratches, just stubborn marks that eventually rub off. ,
My studio 1555 is not starting. When I press it, power button goes white, I can hear the HDD spinning but no beep or error appear. Screen remains black.
When I press the power button again it's turn off.
I've already tryed to take out battery and press power bottom for 30 seconds but nothing happens.
I have a studio 14z that has been sitting for approximately 5 - 6 months without being connected to a power adapter or turned on. Needless to say, when I tried to power it up via the battery, there was nothing there. Pushing the button on the bottom of the battery does not cause any lights to flash.
This doesn't surprise me, but even if I plug it into it's AC adapter and take the battery out, it will not power on. Nothing happens. No lights (except on the power adapter) no fans spinning, nothing. If I have the battery in place, the light that is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging does not turn on. Basically it is "dead". It worked fine before sitting dormant.
Is it a lost cause? I just had it apart to check cabling, etc. and can't see anything obvious. Is there anyway to wake it up? I know the power adapter works as it powered another laptop just fine.
My daughter's 1749 laptop shut itself off and now when you plugin the power adapter, the light over the plug on the laptop blinks three times. It will not power on at all.
I have replaced the power jack in the laptop as well as the cpu and tried different known-good ram but nothing makes any difference. What does the light over the power jack blinking three times indicate?
