Dell Vostro 1440 :: How To Remove Keyboard
Aug 2, 2012
I need to get inside my vostro 1440 to replace the wireles card, but I can't figure out how to remove the keyboard. The user manual at URL.. says to "Pry up to release the top four snaps securing the keyboard to the computer."
what does "pry up" mean?I think I shoud be lifting up something metallic (the keyboard frame) not the flimsy pastic that surrounds the keys right? do I need to do all 4 snaps at once? when I push with a screwdriver I can't feel which way it's supposed to give and don't want to damage the laptop

I just realized that both the new Inspiron 14 and Studio 14z are numbered as the "1440". Usually Dell avoids duplicating the model number- Inspiron 1525, Studio 1535, Inspiron 1545, Studio 1555, etc.

I have never removed a keyboard before and am trying to follow the manual instructions but everytime I try to remove the keyboard, I cant seem to get under the whole keyboard and only the keys come off. It says something about after inserting the plastic scribe pressing the four tabs and i'm trying to do that but I must be doing something wrong.

I would really love to know how to remove the keyboard from my Vaio SR.... I believe the Wireless card is shot... And it's refurb'd so its out of warranty...
I believe the Z and SR have similar designs so if anyone knows how to specifically remove the keyboard I would be forever grateful!

my seven week old son decided to vomit across my Acer 5920 laptop yesterday.
The laptop still boots but I can't login as some of the keys are stuck.
I've downloaded the service manual but I can't seem to be able to lift the keyboard off. There are four areas to prize open just below the speaker but I can't work out how to do it - do they push in or lift up?
Do I take out the tray it's sitting in or prize up each of the keys individually?

I'm having difficulty moving the cursor smoothly, most of the time I have to spend quite an effort to move it to where I want.
Also, the touchpad will keep freezing periodically. And this problem is aggravated when the laptop is on battery power.
I contacted dell support and they replaced the touchpad but the problem still persists. And now every time I contact dell,
they basically give me the same steps to follow each time and none of them really work.

Has anyone seen something like this? ...
The built-in keyboard works perfectly while the installed Windows XP is up and running, including Fn functions, CAPS LOCK etc.
But during system boot up, it shows no reaction at all! Neither does hitting Caps lock, NUM and Scroll lock change the indicator LEDs.
-> no BIOS access
-> no boot up from CD/DVD
-> not even the XP Boot Menu (that shows up after hitting F8 or abnormal shutdown) is controllable
As soon as Windows is up, it works perfectly again.

So does anyone know if Dell sells the backlit keyboard as a part for the Vostro 3500? Mine came with the normal one, but I could really use some light in my keyboard

I have a Vostro 1700 with Vista installed. When I got it I didn't want the Dell Mediadirect softare on there so reinstalled with those partitions removed and just Vista on there.
I also tried installing Windows XP to see how that worked on it; XP installed fine and worked well, but I had the problem that if I touched the Media Direct button it could knacker up the whole XP installation. Obviously,
I couldn't resist trying, and low and behold, when I pressed the button my XP installation was corrupted! (my original thread on it was here - New Vostro 1700 laptop! Why are there four partitions, and can I get rid of them?!)
I've really not liked Vista, and do want to get Windows 7 on the Vostro, but what I want to make sure before I pay out for Windows 7 is that I'm not going to have the same problem with that damn Media Direct button .....

I believe I have narrowed down my laptop purchase to the Vostro 2510. I would really like a backlit keyboard, but I have been receiving mixed messages as to whether or not the 2510 includes that option.
Since it's not mentioned anywhere on the Dell website, I am assuming the worst. I saw this website saying otherwise: http://www.geekwithlaptop.com/dell-vostro-2510-laptop (bottom of the page under "built in extras").
Can someone please clarify? If it does come with the 2510, it must be standard since it is not an option while customizing. Why would they not offer this on all of their models?

I have never used a laptop before (I prefer to work on a server machine) but am considering one at present.I'm looking at a Vostro 3500 but that could change.
1) Can I use a standard USB keyboard and mouse with such a laptop? (No need for special devices!)
2) Are there any problems with PS-2 to USB adaptors connecting keyboard and mouse to a USB port? (Yes I have a few keyboards and mice in storage!)
3) Can I install a standard out of the box version of Windows 7 Ultimate (already licensed) on the Vostro 3500?
4) I saw reference somewhere to touch screen control in Win 7 coming sometime. What are the release plans for such capabilities in Dell laptops?

I'm just going to pick an e6400, but kinda struggle for the choice of screen resolution.
High resolution may have greater performance but everything seem to be so small, also keeps the higher price. I've never used high resolution screens like that so I need ur opinions..

I'm debating whether to get the Inspiron 1440 or the Studio XPS 1340.
Can anyone speak for the build quality of the new Inspiron 1440?
I like the magnesium alloy chassis and sturdy backlit keyboard on the SXPS 13, but it will cost me about $200 more when configured to similar specs.
This laptop will be my main PC when I leave for school: which means it needs to be light/small/durable enough to carry into classes everyday, with the power and adequate cooling to use as a desktop replacement as well.
I don't want any significant flexing and cracking sounds (which many consumer-grade black/silver plastic chassis laptops have) when picking it up around the edges.
These are the configurations I came up with in which the Inspiron costs about $200 less than the SXPS:
Inspiron 1440: P8600, 4GB DDR2-800MHz, 900p LED, 320GB 5400RPM, GMA4500MHD
SXPS 1340: P8600, 4GB DDR3-1067MHz, CCFL, 320GB 7200RPM, GF 9400M

My daughters 1440 works online for about 15min and then it loses connection to the router and wont show any available wireless networks,
I won't work until I reset the system and then it works for about 15 min again.I reinstalled the wireless driver and even tried to restore it to a few weeks before it started doing that but still does it.
Could the wireless card be bad? Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone know which card is in there an ho to get to it?

I've just received a 1440 as a system exchange. Mine has the Intel graphics. Is it safe to assume that the Intel graphics are integrated into the MOBO? The 1440 is apparently available with an ATI 512MB card.
I'm guessing there is no chance I could pick one up and stick it in this thing?
It still shocks me that I have the ability to throw 8gigs in a laptop. This is a replacement for an E1405 and my I9300 is still my go-to laptop.

I thought I'd post this in a new thread instead of replying to my other one since the disassembly pictures could be helpful to people.
Right off, in my other thread I mentioned that Dell told me there were 2 rev's of motherboards (one if you order through the Home portal and a different one if you order through the Small Biz portal), and that the Home rev doesn't support Bluetooth (or WWAN, which is why these things didn't show up for me as options when ordering the laptop). So this morning I took the thing apart to see for myself.
Conclusion - From what I can tell, it appears that any 14z has a full size mini-PCI slot (for WWAN), a half-height mini-PCI slot (for wireless networking), and the mini plug necessary to install the Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth mini-card. Dell support is a bunch of morons.
Steps to disassemble:
1) Remove battery. Here is what the computer looks like with the batter removed.
2) Remove keyboard trim ring. This is totally held in by plastic snaps (yuk...I seem to have an easy time breaking these if not careful). If you flip the laptop upside down and look under where the battery goes, you can see a could of little tabs that show through. You can use a small flathead screwdriver to pop these loose from the backside.
Then flip the laptop keyboard up and carefully work your way around the rest of the trim ring until you have it totally loose.

I'm looking at Studio 15s for my Mom and trying to decide if the 1440 X 900 WLED worth $125 over the 1280 X 800? ?
I know it's a lot of personal taste and it's inconvenient to drag her into BB and bug a salesperson to bring up the internet to check, and sometimes it takes a while of "living" with it to know. She is going to use it for the Net, some word processing, etc.
We're trying to get the best balance between having to scroll and tiny fonts. Also, if resolution is lowered, or font size is increased, does the picture distort much?

I have a Dell Studio 1440. It has only one user replaceable memory slot. 1 GB is on board. After upgrading the RAM to 4 GB my computer had 5 GB and worked well for almost a year. Then there seemed to be a memory failure. I put the old 2 GB DIMM that came with the laptop and the laptop worked for a while. However, one day it just started beeping (4 beeps) at startup. Now, no matter what memory I put in, it just beeps. It works perfectly well with no memory in the slot i.e. with 1 GB on board. All diagnostics pass.
