With the i7, you get the 15.6" WLED FHD screen.
I need to pull the trigger within days. So which is better? Which will run cooler? Which will have better battery life? Which will be faster?
I do a lot of 3D modeling and Finite Element Analysis. Either will be spec'd with 8GB of RAM and the 256GB SSD.
Which one should I get? The cost difference is marginal. Will I regret not getting the i7? Will I regret not getting the RGBLED screen?
And why does Dell.com not allow me to build an i7 computer with a Blu-Ray drive (says there is an OS conflict)?

They say it's available now... But it isn't on the site yet. I know the platform is released in a couple of days, so these people probably are just a bit off.
My XPS 16 is still in the mail on it's way to me. Now I'm seriously thinking about returning it and waiting... I pulled the trigger knowing DX11 hardware was right around the corner..
But as it's a laptop and not my main gaming machine I figured it wouldn't matter much as the 4670 is still a beast and can handle all the new windows 7 features.

Feb 22, 2010I know the general pros/cons of each. However, when we get to specifics, I'm a little foggy.
Here's what I seem to know about these chips:
i5-540: Runs cooler, dual-core, only allows two slots for RAM
i7-820: Hotter, quad core, allows for 16GB RAM
My situation is that, should I get an Envy, I'm getting the dual SSDs (I have one on my SXPS16 and could never go back to a regular HD). Based on the storage, will the i7-820QM run cooler? I'm wondering just how hot it gets...my SXPS 1640 was supposed to be ridiculously hot, but with the SSD, it's generally cool.
What could I expect with the i7/SSD setup?
I'm leaning towards the 820 anyway, because I'd just rather futureproof the system. I don't like that the i5 only allows for two slots of RAM. But one last question I have is...just how much of a difference does the i5 make on battery life over the i7? I usually stay plugged in, but do use my laptop in the car upon occasion.
Dell :: SXPS 1645 Discontinuedi7-820QM No Longer Supported On SXPS
Dec 30, 2009This is interesting... a friend of mine just tried to order the SXPS with the i7-820 processor and got denied by Dell. Apparently, the 1645 has been fully discontinued, and Dell will no longer be placing the i7-820 processor in any SXPS form factor. They quoted that due to hardware and power issues as the reason behind discontinuing the 1645 (and replacing it with the 1647) and killing i7-820 support. The sales rep said the only offering will be the Studio series for the i7-820.
As a 1645 owner with the i7-820, this is kinda scary that this laptop has been discontinued this quickly as well as the offering of the 820 series chip. We ended up calling a second time, and another sales rep confirmed the same story.
Anyone get similar information from Dell on this? I'm also wondering if this is a "Dell Canada" thing...

Jan 18, 2010what the performance difference is between the Intel Core i7-620M and the . Intel Core i7-820QM. I always thought the quad core 820QM was faster, but on the hp website the dual core 620M is more expensive.
Is the 620M faster? And is it faster for specific things only?

Jan 18, 2009Is it normal that dell.ca would have fewer choices of screens than dell.com? I'm looking at the studio 15, and dell.com lists Hi Resolution/Bright,
glossy widescreen 15.4 WLED display (1440x900) as a choice, which is what I want, but dell.ca doesn't. When I view the system specs though, that choice is listed as on option.

Dell Vostro 3460 :: Not Boot Only Loads The Dell Logo And Then Shows A Black Page
Feb 9, 2013my laptop vostro 3460 won't boot any more. When I turn it on it loads the Dell logo (I suppose it passes the POST) but then it just shows a black page. It could be anything, but I guess that it may have something to do with Windows 8 and the UEFI system. I also would be quite happy to install linux mint and get rid of Windows, but I don't know how to change the boot priority order.
So my questions are:
1 is it a hardware issue ? if not, can I solve my problem easily ?
2 how can I change the boot priority order, to install mint ?

Dec 26, 2008Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to boot up and stay unfrozen long enough for me to retrieve my files, and put them on my tower pc.
In a nutshell, I got this Inspiron about 3 years ago- I currently have it connected to an external monitor, because my wife dropped a heavy object on the screen last year, and destroyed said screen.
Just this past week, I turned it on, and it started getting really slow. Finally, it got to a point where now, when I turn it on, it boots up, it goes to the desktop, the desktop icons all appear, and within a minute or two, it just kind of slows down, and eventually freezes up, and the hard drive indicator light quits doing anything. It does not respond to anything, and the only way to restart it, is to hold the power button down until it resets.
If anybody knows of a thread already on this site, regarding this problem, please point me in the right direction, as I tried the search function, and did not come up with anything.
and one or two other things, since it initially started having problems, sometimes, I will get two "missing module" error boxes pop up- and also, while it is booting, the screen flashes black for about 3 seconds, and then comes back on and continues to load.
Thank you very much to anybody who could possibly help me out of this jam. I really do not plan on using this laptop (or notebook) anymore, if and hopefully when, I get my files off of it.
And that is the other problem, I can not attempt to boot up in safe mode, as my screen is busted up, and it will not output to my external monitor, when I hit the f key while it is starting. I did make a couple different bootable cds, but they do not seem to do anything.

Sep 14, 2007I enjoy gaming, although I wouldn't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer. I currently have 1024 MB of RAM (2 x 512) and I am looking to upgrade soon. My options are as follows:
- Dell certfied RAM
- PNY RAM
- Kingston RAM
- Corsair RAM
Of course, for the Dell RAM, I have to wait for the shipping, but it is one of the cheaper ones. However, any of the other three I can pick up at Best Buy (which is more convenient). Can someone point out the pros and cons of each? It seems the PNY is a great buy, but could there be performance problems compared to the others? And why is the Kingston so expensive?

Dell was exceptional in delivering the unit before I left, even though the promised delivery was after my departure. While away the Mini let me keep up with email and browse for information vital to the trip. The machine worked exactly as expected with no glitches. Bonus points for how easy it was to get the Minithrough security in American airports- an unexpected pleasure. Two of my colleagues and travelling companions were impressed - kept borrowing the Mini and will likely acquire one for travel.
