Mar 31, 2009any specific reason to that...cuz i had a single core processor and it would start vista faster but this is c2d and still slower than that at startup.....

Mar 21, 2009I have bought a MB alu 2.0GHz + 2Gb RAM DDR3 and I have noted that sometimes the boot time is longer in the morning or after a long s/d (more than 6hrs for instance) than after a 2-3 hrs s/d. Indeed the cold startup takes around 43-45sec whilst the 'warm' start may take about 32-35sec. Does this happen to you too?
2nd question: what do you think about ONYX? Is it worth making this automation or it is better to abandon these pc-attitudes on a mac?

Dec 17, 2009when i try to boot vista, which was on the hard drive i get a BSOD that flashes really quick so that i cannot see what it is. i ran a hard drive diagnostic and it says that the hard drive is bad, so i thought this was the problem. i ordered in a new hdd and i got the same problem. i tried to load windows 7 onto the harddrive thinking that something may have just gone bad with the install of vista. but i get the same BSOD. so i decided to try and go back and load xp onto the laptop and about halfway thru the install i get a BSOD giving me a stop error message. so i tried to swap out the ram with some working stuff but i get the same problem. so its not the hdd and not the ram. the thing that really has me puzzled is that if i try to install linux onto the computer it works just fine, no errors or anything. this is leading me to think that there is no hardware problem.

Oct 6, 2009I am trying to diagnose a friends laptop.
At first I thought perhaps the backlight went on it, but since then i've noticed a few other issues.
When I power on the laptop everything lights up and I can hear the DVD drive and HDD startup normally. But I get no HP splash screen and the monitor doesn't seem to power on either. Which I'm guessing means it's not posting, cause I even plugged it into an external monitor and it doesn't even pickup anything and goes to sleep mode.
After about 10-15 seconds it looks like the laptop reboots itself and starts up the DVD and HDD again but nothing...it just loops.
Is there something wrong with the motherboard ? I checked the monitor for a loose connection and the laptop in general for any internal loose connections and everything seemed fine.
My guess is the motherboard went and maybe the backlight at the same time...I have no idea...

HP/Compaq :: Vista: CPU 100% On Every Boot (HP Pavilion Dv2200)
May 26, 2010I've had my HP dv2200 notebook since Vista came out and yes I've had problems with it, but I've never had this one.
Since two days ago, every time I boot up, my CPU is running at 100%. This is from a full start-up or even out of hibernation mode. After 10-15 it dies down to 5-15% but occasionally goes back up to 100% even when idle.
Besides going to the usual sites I go to, I didn't download anything or visit any sites I'm not used to going to. There was a Windows Update I had in my task bar for several days that I finally installed, but it didn't require a restart.
My anti-virus software is avast! free version (latest version w/ definitions updated).
Under task manager there are two svshost.exe's that jump around from 30 to 50, and Firefox is at 50 or so when I try to run it (which takes 30 seconds to open during the 100% cpu). And when the CPU does die down to 5-15% it says that 'System Idle Process' is jumping up to 95 which doesn't add up.

May 14, 2010I feel my studio 1558 i5 540m, 7200 rpm hdd has a pathetic boot performance.
Took 1min initially, cut down to 40 sec by microsoft utilities(bootperf), but back again to 1min boot.
I am running factory installed os (with crap removed) and have not clean installed.
Please post your boot times and mention if it is a clean install.

It says "HP Pavilion dv9000" on the screen frame, and says "HP Pavilion dv9700" and "dv9750ep" on the labels in the back. Guess it makes it a HP Pavilion dv9750ep?
It has 2 Hard Disks, each of 150GB; I believe it's 2 physical disks and not just partitions as in the device manager shows 2 ...

It came with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
My issue is:
I'd like to try the beta of Windows 7, using the 2nd Hard Disk for that. I've been using it mainly for data backup, but as I have an external drive I guess I could make the 2nd dirsk free for trying Windows 7.
My reason for wanting to try Windows 7 is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Some of my buddies tried it in Windows 7 and are reporting a noticeable performance increase.
When it comes to Laptops, and since this is my first one, I'm very reluctant to these moves - mainly because of the proprietary drivers... for instance, if I want to update my NVidia card drivers that must be made through HP and not through the regular channels - or so I think.
Questions:
Would it be possible to install Windows 7 on the 2nd Hard Disk and make it a Dual Boot system?
Would I have problems with HP-specific drivers?

Feb 23, 2009When you boot your Vaio you will hear a special chime, this is one of Sony Vaio's feature. I know that some people do not like this sound and disable it in the boot menu. On the contrary, I quite like this chime. I want to use it in my mobile phone as a ringtone or a message sound. I try to find it in my Vaio S36 but couldn't find it. Can anyone please help me find the boot sound file or tell me where it is located in hard drive?

Oct 8, 2014 I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61li 15.4" screen laptop. It's important that I keep this computer in service with the Win XP Pro Sp 3 because I have two vital programs which will not install on Win 8.
This computer has never had a "A: Floppy dirve" and only a CD drive but the installation options for making a Boot Disk/ Start-up Disk only consider a Floppy drive and not a CD drive. I need to make a Boot/Start-up disk on a CD so that if I get locked out of my computer AGAIN, I can boot back into Windows and then either fix the problems or restore from my current backups.
I have two new sets of Rescue Disks but they don't boot into the current OS so that I can access my backups. And if I can't access Safe Mode or do a repair, I'm stuck with the problem of having to reinstall an old version of XP, which is then not compatible with my backups because the backups have new Windows files from all the upgrades.
How can I make a Boot Disk/Start-up Disk like we used to use in the "old days" to start the initial system files and boot into Windows so that I can either make repairs to restore from my backups using current Winows files?

Oct 10, 2009I know that the dv6000 is one of the worst laptops but I still tried to repair it and got a new motherboard.
Initial problem: fried motherboard.
Got a refurb one off ebay now my issues is as following:
Press the on power button, fan spins for 2 seconds and computer remains on with no boot posting. Hard drive light is OFF and I can't hear the harddrive but I don't think it is the hd because I should still be able to access the bios and monitor should still light on. screen doesn't display anything. cd drive works and when I put a cd such as a windows disc you will hear it work for a couple minutes.
I tried everything from resetting the power cycle, removed the memory, harddrive, connected an external monitor, changed the little battery inside the motherboard. all power cables and ribbons are connected. keyboard won't respond though (fn light wont light on and ctrl alt delete produces nothing) ! I hate HP. after opening the computer I realzied what a piece of junk.

Sep 24, 2014I have bought Lenovo Essential G580 (59-324061) Laptop (3rd Gen Ci5/ 4GB/ 500GB/ DOS) on Feb 2013, its out of warranty now.
I have installed Ubuntu in the laptop, not sure how i formatted the hard disk during installation. I guess it was full format of hard disk during installation (while selecting hard disk).
Till today everything was working fine. From today morning, there is always a Boot menu which is being displayed with following options:
1. ubuntu
2. PCI LAN: Atheros Boot Agent
3. ATA HDD: ST500LT012-9WS142
4. ATAPI CD: MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ8D1
I have pressed enter in both Ubuntu and ATA HDD options. But after a brief duration the control comes back to the same menu I have specified before. How to boot to ubuntu.
Dell :: Very Slow Boot Time With SXPS 16
Jul 9, 2009A week or two ago my Studio XPS 16 use to boot up fairly quickly, but now it takes about 3-4 minutes to boot up from shut down.
The only things I have running at startup are Zonealarm, Skype, Dell Touchpad, NOD32 Antivirus, and Dell Quickset. I'm running Vista 64-bit. Has anyone else experienced slow boot times with their SXPS 16?

Feb 22, 2013I have a XPS 17(L702X) with Window 7 Ultimate 64 bit and am in the middle of a Dell support issue regarding the Nvidia graphics card.
Dell support have requsted I run diagnostics from the "one time boot menu" (I have run this before on other laptops but my problem here is.
Dell supports says tells me "Immediately press the F12 key once every second until ?Preparing one-time boot menu?, Shows in the upper right corner of the screen."
However all I get is "Boot Menu" (With options underneath) in the centre of the screen. Is this the same thing?

A couple days ago I tried turning the laptop on, and it just went to an all black screen.

Hard disk 1000gb ( 2 hard each one 500gb) and preloaded vista home premium and nividia 9600m gt 1gb ddr2.
And i notice that my laptop take too long boot time in compare with my friend laptop Dell inspiron 1525 with 1.6 pantium dual core processor and 2gb ddr2 ram and 160 gb hard disk and windows vista ultimate..so is there something wrong with my laptop and how can i speed up boot time and do u think that i can play games like crysis and call of duty 4 and GTA 4 on it?

It sometimes freezes on startup and I have to hold the power button down to restart it. Sometimes when it restarts it takes 10-15 mins to fully boot up and load up to the login screen.

Dec 5, 2014I had exactly the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5552G with win7, I tried all things that was online e.g. New battery, Flashing bios, Fn + esc without battery when trying to start the computer and so on.
It started now and then and worked perfect but when I shut it down again it could take me up to 50 tries to get it started.
The problem was issues with the boot sector on the hard drive!
Finally I made an Win7 repair disc and started from.
I also checked for errors on the hard drive and it repaired some sectors before starting windows.
After that it works like when it was new. The computer was bought January 2011.

Feb 8, 2014I got my Ideapad y410p a week ago. It came with Windows 8 and many useless softwares installed. It was taking around 3 minutes of time and immediately i updated my os to 8.1 (x64). Even after updating to 8.1, the boot time didn't get any better. I unistalled useless softwares like Mcafee, Cyberlink tools and many and installed AntiVir and Visual Studio. Turn on Fast startup is also enabled. But what is painful is it still takes 2 minutes and 31 seconds plus to load my desktop. What is more painful to me is My old laptop (Amd Dual Core, 3GB Ram with Many softwares installed with windows 7) loads earlier than this.

Acer TravelMate 2420 :: Can Boot Up And / Or Close Down At Specific Time?
Mar 5, 2015I have, a.o., a TravelMate2420. Can I let it boot up and/or close down on specific times? It's one of my Acers, the oldest, and I want to use it for monitoring my sunpanels.
That program will start up after boot and close down while closing down the system. The program uses COMports and for datasavings harddiskspace AND a part of the machines memory, so it has to shut down regularly before the machines' memo is full. And then start up clean and so on. Aprox a week of data will do, so a weekly restart of the system would be needed.
If timer doesn't work I can use the local network option. But how?

Nov 22, 2014I've got a Pavilion g6 2215so.The computer sometimes hangs at startup and the only way to go around it is to unplug the battery and start it up without it.
I thought that maybe there are some newer BIOS drivers or firmware that would solve this.
But I cannot find the drivers for this model at all at the support site.I've tried to have the system identified as well but it doesn't come up with anything really.

When i turn on my laptop it stucks on welcome screen i have noticed it has created a folder with name "new folder " on desktop having driver files in it.I have moved that folder but it is created again after repairing window . mostly when my laptop stucks on welcome screen after that on "hard restarting"(by pressing power button) it asks for repairing window and restores the previous setting and then log me in. other wise, if i chose start window normally it stucks again on welcome. tell me wether it is a hardware issue or having problem with windows/graphic card.

Hence, I am going to ask 2 basic questions but I have not been able to find precise answers to them:
1. what's the impact on battery life of having a 7200rpm HD in the new 17" MBP? Will I still have my around 7hrs of juice?
2. what's the impact on boot time? I have just tested the 5400rpm version, and I didn't find it exceedingly quick, i.e. it took him around 47 seconds to boot. Would the 7200rpm decrease this?
One possibility would be to buy the standard version, and then, in a few months, upgrade with a 256 Go SSD...
