Aug 28, 2014I have a 1 year old HP Probook 4540s that recently has the following problem.
When unplugged the laptop suddenly shuts down even tough the battery shows 29% still remaining.
I receive no notification from Windows or anything, it just shut downs like when the battery reaches 0%.
Then in order to start it again, I need to plug it in.
I previously didn't have any battery problems and running the HP Assistant informs me that the battery is ok and it doesn't need replacements. Basically the laptop is dead at 28%-29% battery life.

Aug 21, 2014I just purchased a new probook 4540s core i5 with win7 x64 system.
Firstly, When battery full charged then turned laptop off for a few hours or next day it becomes 99% or 98% although its plugged in Ac power. Shutdown again for 1 hour and turn on it turns to 97%. Is that ok or there is problem in battery specially it shows that ( Plugged in, Not chareged ) so laptop should operate at AC adapter and battery remain 100%. Secondly, I have an unknown device can't find it as shown in figure below.

Nov 23, 2014I have an hp pavillion g6 laptop (Product QE05UA#ABA, Model: g6-1c35dx). For a while its been causing problems, it's been slow, showing viruses, and now it wont start up. I left it on sleep mode last night, once i opened it up today it was turned off. I figured it lost battery which usually doesn't happen, but I turned it on and it shows a blinking screen that comes on and then turns black, over and over. The blinking screen shows "press esc key for startup menu".
Also, the caps lock key blinks once when that screen comes on. HP ProBook 4540s :: USB 3.0 Not Working
Oct 20, 2014I have a HP Probook 4540s Notebook PC. I reinstalled the operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate) recently and installed all the necessary drivers required for the PC. But now as I connect a USB 3.0 hard disk into the USB 3.0 ports ( the left two ports), i get an error message. The message is shown below:
"Device can perform faster : This USB Mass Storage Device can transfer information faster if it is connected to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 Port"
The speed of the data transfer also seems to be very low, in the ranges of 20-30 Mbps.
I'm not sure if I have installed the correct driver for the hardware. As for now, as shown in the Control Panel, I have installed "Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller Driver".
Dell Inspiron 6400 :: Battery Not Charging But BIOS Shows It Charging Normally
Jun 19, 2012I have an older Inspiron 6400 (looks like the 1505) that isn't charging the battery. The bios indicates that the battery is charging, and that it is performing normally. There isn't a red flashing battery indicator, but when the laptop is powered on there isn't any "green light" indication of the battery, either. The AC adapter performs normally ( Charger is a PA10 (90watt) and it works fine on my D800, and charges that battery normally).
What I don't understand is why the BIOS indicates the battery is charging and that the battery is performing normally. However, when I have the system up and running there isn't a green battery indicator light on the button strip. Let me clarify that statement. During the initial boot phase of start-up there is the green indicator light on the button strip, but as the OS finishes loading this light goes out and the battery doesn't charge.
Could this be caused by a faulty Bios update, or is it something with the battery charging circuit of the motherboard? The laptop operates normally when using the AC adapter, just no indication of the battery charging when the OS is fully loaded. OS is Windows XP Pro (SP3).

Nov 22, 2014I've had my laptop for about a three weeks now. Last night, I shut the lid to put it to sleep and went out for a few hours, leaving the lap top plugged in.
When I came home, the laptop wouldn't turn on. I looked online, found to take out the battery, hold the power button down for 30 sec, put the battery back in, then plug it in again, nothing worked.
I left the battery out over night, then did the same thing -- no go.
The computer has been plugged in for about an hour now, still nothing.
There are no lights on the laptop itself, the green light is on the AC adapter and I also plugged in the adapter into another computer and it worked with that.
Running on Windows 7, Inspiron 17 5748 -- still under warranty.

Sep 1, 2014I have a HP Pavilion M6-1045DX laptop and I recently tried to plug it into a display through the Analog RGB and I saw a spark and the laptop shut off. During that time I ran the laptop straight from the AC adapter without a battery because I don't really use it.So the laptop shut off and I tried turning it back on and nothing happened. The charge indicator light turned off even though it was still plugged in. I thought maybe the power adapter stopped working or something but I tested it with a voltmeter and there was still power in it.
So I decided to put the battery in and the laptop was able to turn on, but after a while, this one area that i never felt heat there before was really hot and later smelled like something was burning.But anyway, when it booted up, the screen resolution was really low and was on maximum brightness. When the laptop finished booting, it randomly started installing drivers (such as the WLAN and intel rapid storage) and yeah. Sound doesn't work either. I tried to plug the laptop back in and the battery won't charge.I turned it off and took out the battery and tried running it off from the AC adapter only but the power light was blinking constantly and when I press it, the WiFi button light (F12) turned on for a second and back off. I also hear this high frequency noise that I never heard before somewhere in the laptop.

HP ProBook 4540s OS/Software :: Fingerprint Scanner Not Working?
Jul 29, 2012Problem: Fingerprint Scanner - Windows log in does not give option to log in via fingerprint scanner.
Overview: After installing fingerprint drivers from the HP site and using the HP Protect Tools to successfully enroll fingerprint, I tried logging in via this method but the windows log in screen does not display this option. Device manager correctly identifies and shows the fingerprint sensor - however, the control panel says no biometric devices detected.
Details of what steps I took trying to make the scanner work are given below.
Specs:
1) Probook 4540s
2) Windows 7 64-bit
3) i5-3210m, 1Gb Hd 7650m, 4 Gb 1333Mhz, 750Gb 5400rpm, VFS 491 Fingerprint scanner.
Details of the problem and steps I took to install drivers:
After a fresh installation of Windows 7, I went to the HP driver site to download the latest drivers for Probook 4540s:

I installed the drivers in roughly this order:
1)realtek ethernet controller drivers,
2)audio drivers,
3) the chipset and USB 3.0 drivers (but not the Intel MEI driver)
4) Intel video driver: faced an issue such that drivers were not being allowed to install. After disabling switchable graphics in the bios, I was able to get these drivers to install.
5) AMD video drivers: installed after the intel HD graphics driver - installed but Catalyst Control Center was not being displayed. So I re-enabled switchable graphics in BIOS, re-installed these drivers and CCC was now available.
6) HP hotkey support
7) HP universal camera driver
8) Validity Fingerprint sensor
9) Synaptics Touchpad driver
10) Atheros wifi & bluetooth
11) Jmicron card reader
After driver installation, I installed the HP Protect Tools. After prompting for a PC reboot - which I did - it asked for setup of security etc.. Part of this pocess was the enrolling of my fingerprints - successful. However, upon log off/ restart of windows, an option to log in with the fingerprint scanner did not appear in the Windows log in screen.
I opened the Control Panel, and found there was no biometric devices tab, even though device manager showed biometric device and validity sensor (VFS 491). I then proceeded to uninstall HP protect tools and the validity driver for the fingerprint sensor, then made sure these services were running:
-Credential Manager
-Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
-DCOM Server Process Launcher
-RPC Endpoint Mapper
-Windows Biometric Service
-Plug and Play
After reboot HP Protect Tools as before would enroll my fingerprints, but again no prompt at windows login came to log in with fingerprint. However, one change after the installtion of [URL] was that in control panel there is now a tab for biometric devices; however, it says that windows did not find any biometric devices installed. HP OS/Software :: Installing Windows 7 (Pro) On A ProBook 4540S C6Z35UT?
Nov 26, 2012I recently purchased a ProBook 4540S C6Z35UT notebook computer. I love the hardware. It came with Windows 8 64-bit. I never tried Windows 8 before, but I've used Windows 7 a lot. After playing with it quite a bit, I've decided I really don't like Windows 8 at all. The Start screen just gets in the way. I want a standard desktop where I can plop down some common docs I'm referencing, common program icons, etc. The flipping to the neo-Win7 desktop that Windows 8 does is quite lame. If you run a desktop program from the start menu, you flip to the desktop, but then it stays there after that program exits. It's a very "hack" design. The start menu is cute for touch pads ("surface"s) but not really laptop/desktop appropriate, imho.
So my question is: if I purchase a Windows 7 or Windows 7 Pro 64-bit version of Windows, can I install it on this machine and will it have the right driver support? Also, in case something gets messed up, is there a way to create a Windows 8 install DVD for my laptop to get it back to original state?

Mar 18, 2013I'm trying to migrate my HP from the hard-drive to a new ssd I bought. As far as I know windows 8 is supposed to activate based on the code burned into the machines bios, so I bought some hp recovery dvds online as HP recovery manager no longer seems to ship with these machines, so I couldn't make one, and reinstalled windows 8 onto the machine. After install and connecting to the internet the activation failed, it said the key was blocked. This can't be, this machine came with windows 8 preinstalled, so it must have a valid key and license I've already paid for.
I've tried burning reinstall media using the Microsoft media creation tool but that too fails once it connects to the internet to validate the activation
I would prefer to fresh reinstall, I'm not even sure the drive I took out works anymore or isn't altered at this point, plus its larger than my ssd so cloning would be a problem. And I've also read of problems cloning windows 8 secure boot installs regardless. In any case I would like to some how be able to get this recovery to work.
