Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y40 - Using SSD For Booting
Dec 26, 2014
I received my new Lenovo Y40 Laptop - 59423025.
Â
It comes with a Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD.
Â
Does it automatically use the SSD for booting? Or is there something I need to do to enable this?
So like many V570 owners I encountered the same problem where the laptop does not turn on anymore. I'm not on warranty anymore so I couldn't send it in to Lenovo either. Based on what I read, this issue appears when the laptop goes to sleep (closing down the lid when the laptop is on, or letting the laptop sleep when you're not using it for a while).
So I was thinking, "Hmm it doesn't make sense to replace the motherboard just because the hard drive is on sleep". Why not just pull out the hard drive and memory cards and put it back in? So I unscrewed the smaller cover on the back of the laptop and unscrewed the hard drive (one screw), pulled out the hard drive (slide it backwards and pull out) and also pulled out the two memory cards (that are on the right side). Â Then I simply put the hard drive back in and the memory cards back in place. Screwed the cover back on there and it TURNED ON!
First thing I did after that was go into the Power Options in Windows 7 (just search "Power Options" from the start menu) and went to "Choose what closing the lid does" and changed all the selections that said "Sleep" or "Hibernate" to either "Shutdown or Do Nothing".
NOTE: The down side is that you probably can't Sleep or Hibernate your laptop anymore. I'm trying to see if there's a BIOS update for this but the Lenovo Support website is not loading at the moment. Â The UPSIDE is your laptop WORKS and you're not gonna be spending $$$ for an unecessary "motherboard' that they say they'll replace.
I recently got a U310 ideapad, and I am trying to run a Linux LiveCD that I put on my USB drive using uinetbootin. On the idea pad I made the settings for the BIOS have the boot order with USB FDD and USB Drives on the top. Even with fitting fn+F12 I am still not getting any success with the boot from USB.
How to boot from a Lenovo recovery disk for Windows 7 on a USB driven DVD drive? The laptop is currently running Linux so can't run from within the operating system. The BIOS utility doesn't recognise the drive no matter what I select in the boot menu (USB CD, USB FDD or USB HDD) and the F12 boot utility also doesn't recognise the drive. Incidently, F12 does recognise the Linux USB drive so I know this works. The external drive is a Leicke DVD R/RW DVD. Â The reason for wanting to boot from the Windows 7 recivery drive is to reinstall Win 7 on a new install, dual boot Linux (Mint), then install iTunes on WIn 7so I can sync my iPhone, and run everything else under Linux. I've tried using a Win emulator under Linux but unsuccessfully.
My fan is not working properly, in fact it only runs for few seconds at booting and then never again.
My cores get about 70°C and higher (with only Skype and Chrome on), so I'm forced to use external fan to by able to work.
I found this problem when I was working and then my notebook suddenly shutdown a I wasn't able to turn it on for a while. Then I grabed it and I almost get 3rd degree burns.Â
Two noisy external fans, that I have to use to keep core under 70°....
I have a brand new z510 notebook, and I need to do a clean install of windows 8.1.  Problem is that I can't seem to boot from CD or USB.  I have entered the bios, and although the DVD rom drive works, and it shown correctly in BIOS, it does NOT allow me to add it to the boot list.  Also, there is an option called 'Boot From USB'  I enable that, and still the USB boot does not show up in the boot list.  The only thing I have in the boot list is the 'Windows Boot Manager' and it lists the name of my drive.   I thought that maybe secure boot was the issue, but I tried disabling this, and is still doesn't let me do what I want. I just paid $800 for a top of the line laptop, and I can't even boot from a cdrom.  Every computer I have had since the 1980s have allowed me to do just that without trouble. Â
I just did a OneKeyRecovery to reset the notebook (original Win8); after that I did an upgrade to Win8.1; now the notebook boots (reboot/shutdown) very slow, booting takes >5 min; when it's up it's quite ok.
Assume an issue with the SSD cache, SSD is not visible (device manager etc,), reinstalled smartcache, smartcache doesn't find an SSD....
I've bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Z50-75 ( with Free DOS ): Â Bios Version: A4CN24WW (V 1.03) Â I am trying to install Windows 8 but it just doesnt work. not matter if i allow secure boot or disable it. no matter if i choose from the "OS Optimized Defaults : [Win8 64bit]" Â I changed the boot priority so that the DVD-Reader is on the highest place (1). Got a working Win8 DVD, also got win7 professional, but i'd rather install Windows 8. Â Even though Win7 is okay too if it'll work then. Â I don't know what to do other than switching around between all those options. and it doesn't work at all. Â Whenever i start the laptop and choose to start with the DVD-Reader it lights up and nothing happens.
I bought lenovo z510 recently and liked its performance. But from last few days am facing issue when windows 8.1 boots .ie., when i power on my laptop i see "lenovo log" for more than 15 minutes and sometimes windows doesnt start at all. I have to restart few times manually with power button to see the windows screen. Â Initially i thought it is due to windows update, but even after I turned off update, am facing same issue. My laptop is hardly a month old and it is very frustrating to see this happening .
I've been following instruction on this link to create bootable windows installation usb thumb drives [URL] .... And it's been working fine with usb 2.0 thumb drives on the X1C (old ver). However, for some reason it won't work with usb 3.0 thumb drives.
I've tried several, but everytime I select the thumb drive on boot selection, the screen blinks and goes back to boot selection. I'm assuming it's not reading my boot information.  It works fine on usb 2.0 thumb drives.
The first black screen with the Microsoft logo loads but afterwards I just get stuck in a black screen with the cursor which I can move around but nothing more.
So, my solution was to get into Safe Mode. Unfortunately although I don't have a password when Win7 boot, I'm asked for one in Safe Mode. The thing is neither the keyboard, nor the touchpad work so I cannot get past the login screen.
The keyboard works perfectly in BIOS, but not in the Windows login screen for Safe Mode.
I have a problem with my notebook Lenovo N200 (0769). It has appear out of a sudden.  It was working fine a few days ago but at one point it stopped booting.  The bios correctly recognizes (apparently) all the the major components... but it hangs at one point after the message: "Mouse initialized"  The weird part is that it would not even boot from CD. It just hangs...  I tried removing the HDD and booting from a CD and everything went ok. I mean that the system would boot from the CD. So my suspicion is that the HDD is broken.
I have a y410p with windows 8 on it. I recently installed a debian based linux alongside windows so I can dual boot them. This required me to also add Grub to the the disk. But grub was in legacy mode and i had problems booting up win8. So, I used boot-repair to try to fix it, but it seems to have gotten worse.
I noticed that if i boot my TPY in tablet mode, the cursor simply doesn't show up even if i flip back to the laptop mode. i can only solve it by restarting and booting back from laptop mode. Â If i boot from laptop mode however and flip to tablet mode, the cursor reappears when i flip it back to laptop mode.
I'm writing on behalf of a friend who has an Acer Travelmate 4500 series laptop...4502LMi to be precise. XP sp3
Okay here's the deal:
press power > black screen with safe mode options appears > select Start Windows Normally >Then black Windows XP logo startup screen appears > then screen appears saying checking disk for consistency, volume Serial Number is 2629-16F0 > after check disk completes then Acer screen appears > Then screen saying " To begin, click your username" > then click username and then desktop appears > 5 seconds later blue screen appears saying :
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or tech support group.
Then computer restarts and the blue screen appears again.... then restarts and then Black safe mode screen appears again.... then windows logo screen then restarts etc. etc. etc.
When trying to boot in safe mode screen says: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWSSystem32 ..but freezes. doesn’t boot.......
I had bought yoga 2 pro from Malaysia three weeks back. And I had traveled back to India last week. The PC was working fine till yesterday. Yesterday while I was working suddenly the system hangs and I had to hard reset. But after that the system didn't boot up. It shows boot device not found. I have switched it off and tried booting using restore button and opened the bios it shows that HDD not detected.
Similar kind of issue I faced two times before but if I hard boot again it worked fine.
Just 2 days ago I started recieving the error message 'Fan Error' after booting up my computer (T530). Before it gives me the message there is a loud beep noise. I'm going back to school soon and I'm hoping there is a way to repair this myself without buying a new fan. I'm really bad with operating on computers. I'm wondering if I just have to clean dust out of it or nudge the fan or something like that.
I have got a problem with my T430. I'm not able to boot from usb stick. I checked BIOS settings like 1000 times. Approx. 8mo ago I installed an Ubuntu form usb stick, and everything went well. But now, I guess after BIOS update (2.54 or 2.56) it doesn't work any longer. Today I saw on support webpage information about BIOS version 2.57. It has even written that it solves my problem: "Fix an issue where the system fail to boot from USB device by configuration.".
My T540p with Window 7 is experiencing problems starting and shutting down. After booting up I often get a blank screen where just the moused pointer is displayed. I have to hold the power button down to shut down and then try again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 goes to boot-up. Quite often when I shut down Win 7 The desktop icons disappear but the desktop background continues to be displayed and the notebook doesn't shut down.Â
I have a wonderful new T440 here and am wishing to load Windows 7 x64 from a bootable usb memory stick, which I've always used and works fine on other computers (tested again this morning).
However when I try to boot my T440 from this drive, I can bring up the temporary boot menu and see the usb drive in the list, but when I select it (press enter) the screen just flashes and comes back to the temporary boot menu. IT will not accept my memory stick!  I tried with another stick with Win7 on , but got the same problem.   Interestingly I also have a X240 here and this behaves exactly the same. So I don't think it is the USB Drive and its not the T440. What can I do.  Just out of interest I was able to boot from a Windows 8 prepared USB drive... which is great but I don't want to load win8, I need to load win7.  Â
I've updated the BIOS on my t500 Monday. Followed all directions. Now when I power on the t500, it takes 10 minutes before it begins to boot.  I see the lights, I hear the fans, but not video for 10 minutes.
System specs: Lenovo T430U Intel i5-3427U 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz SoDIMM Memory HDD 500G 7200rpm Toshiba mSATA 24GB Samsung Cache Win 8 Pro, upgraded to 8.1 Â I rarely use this machine but a couple of months ago I went to boot it up and found that I was not able to get past the Windows splash screen. Sometimes I don't even get the Windows splash screen, I just get a black screen. Rarely I get a Windows screen saying that it is diagnosing a system problem or something to that effect and I can even get to where it will allow me to do some Windows diagnostics but nothing ever comes of it and the process is extremely slow. Â I called Lenovo, but of course my machine is out of waranty so the tech just gave me a few pointers and said I could send it in to the depo but the potential repair cost could range up to about 75% of what I paid for the machine in the first place. Anyways, after having me try a few things in the BIOS he suggested that it was likely the hard drive. I mistakenly thought from the time that I bought this machine that the OS was installed on the 24 GB SSD so I ordered a new SSD and swapped it in. This made no difference at all as I have now learned that the mSATA SSD drive is merely for cache to speed up booting. Â I am afraid that this means the main HDD is at fault, and quite frankly, if I replace it I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7. But I do have pictures and docs that I would like to salvage if possible.
Just purchased a G50-30 with win 7 x64. Decided to update the BIOS A7CN40WWW_64 from Lenovo website. The notebook version was A7CN23WW.  Upon reboot, after successful BIOS update, Win 7 booted with errors of Repair option or Normal boot up. Even re-installation of Win 7 will yield BSOD - ACPI non compliant.  Have changed BIOS settings defaults from UEFI to Legacy, it still does not work. This BIOS version is not stable. Can i request for the earlier version of BIOS ?
Lenovo V570, I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.  I have an esata port, and was going to get an internal hard drive with a case that converts the drive into an esata drive. I'm wanting to get a 3 TB drive, and in order to get it to read all 3 TB, I'll need to reformat the drive in GPT format (not MBR). Right?  I see a thing online that says the SATA controller has to be compatible with GPT in order to do this. I want to use it as an external drive, without any operating system on it, so I'm not worried about getting Windows to run on it; just if I can format it as GPT and get the full 3 TB out of the drive. I don't want to buy the 3 TB drive and then find out I can only get 2 because of the motherboard. If that site was correct, then I need to know if the sata controller is compatible with GPT.  I see this listed under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers list: Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.  I tried to call Lenovo support but could only tell me that she thinks I have SATA 0 or 1, but nothing about the controller in this model or GTP compatibility.  How do I find this out?
I had bought a lap with 500 GB hard drive 2 days back. now its not booting properly showing a window

One day the acer aspire 7735zg - 424g50mn model no: ms2261 refused to boot, when the boot screen turns on, the progress bar loading about half and then it constant beeping and it loads a little more and stops and then the rest of the progress bar loads and it change to the loading parameter page and then it restarts.
Anyone know what the problem is ? I did help the owner take out the hdd because he got some very important pictures and files on the disk. And for the thanks i got the laptop from he. The laptop is produced in october 2009 and is almost new.
How do i find out whats wrong and can i take it on the warranty when its so new without the orginal hdd, was thinking about setting in a new sdd disk.
