Sony :: Accessing The BIOS
Dec 5, 2009I have a FZ11S laptop. On boot, how can I access the BIOS screen? My desktop is with the Del key but Vaio must have a different key I guess.

View 3 RepliesI recently purchased an Acer Aspire 5920G and am delighted with my purchase.
The laptop is presently working well (touch wood !) but in case of future computer catastrophe I used the eRecovery facility to create a full back up and also create recovery DVDs.
Being a "belt and braces" person I have also bought, downloaded and installed a copy of Acronis True Image Home 11 which I saw recommended in a computer magazine.
As part of the Acronis process, I created a rescue dvd using its standard tool.
I am now required to check that this rescue DVD boots correctly.
This involves entering the 5920G's BIOS and temporarily amending the boot order.
I understand I can do this by tapping the F2 key repeatedly before Windows starts. Is this correct?
Is there any kind of password required to enter and/or amend the BIOS ?
Are there any risks in this process, what are they and how can they be avoided/minimised ?
ACER 2423 confirmed dead. The hard drive should have recoverable files and I want to access them. I put the drive into a USB external enclosure and my desktop can see the drive and its partitions. It will not however read any files. Does ACER have a software code or something that prevents this?
View 4 Replies View Relatedstarting from yesterday i cant seems to access my hard drive. everytime i try to go into my computer then double click on the hard drive, it would enter but then freeze and becomes non-responsive. i cant enter the folders like programs, user, windows...etc, it would just freeze. i have no problem other drives such as removable flash drive, this only happens with the hard drive. i have to close explorer but then my desktop would be blank with just my wallpaper, so i would need to restart or log off but it will take forever. also i notice my hard drive LED is always on and the temperature is getting really hot, it never happened before and i ran scans with avg and it shows i hav no virus or spyware. so idk wat is the problem, it happened all of the sudden it was fine 2 days ago,

View 7 Replies View RelatedI Recently purchased an Acer Aspire One D257 - 13473 with mfg. date 2011/07/04 pre-owned at a garage sale. it had a dead hard drive when i purchased it, which was not a huge issue, and i replaced it.
then i was severely disappointed.
I went to try and configure this computer for my own use, but turns out there's (what im assuming to be a BIOS password, since the HDD has been replaced) a password to access the F2 SETUP Menu on this machine. i was really hoping that since I've already upgraded the RAM and replaced the hard drive that i could get this machine actually functionable again.
with a new computer, hp dv6 on windows 7, i need to transfer windows xp files over.
so it's sort of like drag and drop, except wirelessly.
the windows xp is a desktop with a router configured and the laptop configured to use the router for wireless access...
ive been trying to understand how all this works, but i cannot simply manage to access windows xp, or using windows xp to access windows 7!
i have a cat5 cable if that is needed... but i dont know what to do with it..
Even if it's not wireless and with the CAT5 cable, i am willing as long as it gets transferred, i just prefer wireless
and i think i rea that Homegroup is not compatible with Windows XP so what do I use?
it's also confusing that in my Network Map on windows 7, it does not pick up the shared documents folder on my desktop.
Updated: Found a better way to backup Bios only, Please see the end of this message
Let say your Vaio Z is using Bios R4040M3 and you move to Bios R4041M3 to use the official VT support. Later on, you want to move back to R4040M3 to use the Advance Menu hack. Unfortunately, you cannot move back as Sony never publish the R4040M3 Bios update. This is my current situation.
I decided to investigate a way to back up the current Bios. Using a program called Universal extractor, I managed to extracted the files in the original Bios update. The bios update uses a program called Insydeflash to flash the Bios. The Insydeflash uses a file called platform.ini to control its setting.
In the platform.ini file, there is a section called [FDFile]. The section [FDFile] has a parameter called BackupName. If we put in a file name here, the Insydeflash should save your current Bios into that file. Unfortunately, I cannot make it work with the Sony supplied Insydeflash. (version 3.38).
I managed to get the newer version of Insydeflash (version 3.72). The newer version has a new ini section called [BackupROM], as the following:
..........
[BackupROM]
Flag=0
FilePath=c:
FileName=....................
Is there a guide that explains how it is possible to successfully edit a bios file for flashing? Or could a person explain how it should be done

I didn't install as I had already enabled VT using the EFI tweak. In addition, I am not sure whether I can turn on the Advanced Menu again after installing this Bios.
I am very close to deciding on Sony for my next machine.
Half of the people hate them. Half love them. Half the reviews say there are crap. Half say they are machines built by Gods.
It is a lot to sift through.
The WEIRDEST thing I have heard is about the BIOS and how it is not really a completely hardware controlled BIOS like most are .....
I'm having some strange happenings with my Vaio FZ of late. I took it apart a couple of days ago to clean it up and after re-assemebling and hitting the power button,
the computer wouldn't go past the initial "Vaio,Phoenix,Intel" screen. I tried a couple of hours later and it booted fine.
(Note, I've took it apart on two occasions before and have had zero problems after).....
I have a VGN-FS850/W notebook. When I turn it on I can't activate the Bios screen. I've tried hitting the F2 key nothing happens. I've taken the memory out trying to trigger a bios event but that does not help. Sometimes it won't even show the Sony Logo.
It has a hard drive that has an lsass.exe error at boot-up.
I install a brand new HD and I get the same problem, can't get to the bios. I have scanned the drive for viruses. It a had a few minor ones but not Sasser as I suspected.
Is it possibly a bios battery that is dead.
Does anyone know why the bios what appear or what else could be the problem.
with bios for VGN-AR71M BIOS Version: R2090J8 where can i download this bios
View 5 Replies View RelatedI got a Sony VGN- FW11E laptop the one with p8400 processor. Recently I updated bios to R0270Y0 from R0250Y0 in order to enable virtualisation since then my cpu runs to 100% of its speed 2.26mhz. I used different power profiles but the speed is stuck to 2.26mhz. I used different programmes to monitor the cpu speed however the results were the same.
Also the fan runs longer now.
Does anyone have the R0250Y0 bios?
BIOS updates for many models to enable VT. Some showed up in US site, like FW590, but others are listed in oversea.
Like the FW290J that I have, can use R1100Y0 BIOS update. Basically look for last 2 characters of your current BIOS version then see what's available.
Here is a link from oversea:

Just saw the new Z in a local computer store. The bios version is R5030M3. The video driver is the latest one. The speed mode has no problem. (I will be very surprise if it has problem.) Sony definitely has the Bios and driver to make our Z work in Windows 7. I don't understand why they don't release them to resolve all the problems that we are facing in Windows 7 upgrade.

I've done some searches and many state that hitting F3 is the key I press to get into the bios but it's not working. I have a VPC-W121 that came with Windows 7 Starter. Want to install Ultimate edition to test, but will want to back up the image of the hard drive first.

I bought this laptop for about 2 and a half years and I got the extended warranty for 3 years. After I bought it about 3-4 months after I have called and asked for the BIOS password but they stalled and stalled and stalled and I never obtained it. Now I call again to ask for the BIOS password w/ all the information they are acquiring like receipt etc. Now they say that my warranty has expired. Are they not supposed to give all information of the laptop to the customer that purchased their products? I need the BIOS to reformat my OS..
