Sony :: Canadian Vaios"Bilingual" Keyboard
Jan 27, 2009
I just came across a disturbing photo in the big Z series thread of a so-called "Canadian" keyboard littered with far too many labels and colors, all in the name of being bilingual.
[url]
My question is, is this really what Sony Canada is sending out on any notebook listed with a bilingual keyboard? It's horrible! Not only is it far more confusing to figure out what's where, but it has the European L-shaped Enter key and repositioned backslash which I simply cannot live with (20 years using keyboards the "other way" have pretty much conditioned me).
I guess they got tired of making a custom model for 23% of the population, and would rather annoy the other 77%.
My Canadian SZ160P I bought 3 years ago came with a "normal" keyboard, I was completely surprised to find this out now. And just after I had talked myself out of the Dell Studio XPS 13.
Is there ANY WAY to get a English keyboard in Canada? CTO maybe?
Or am I simply going to have to buy from the US and deal with having no warranty, because there is no sale with that keyboard...

The question is, in case the title is throwing you off. Where do the Canadian shipments from Dell come in from? The point of origin within the US.
The reason I ask is because obviously my package is comming in at some point but it was put on the truck at 9:11AM EST and depending on the distance ( and customs ) it could be here either tomorrow(as seen with some other members) or later this week.
Normally My packages are sent out on the friday and received on the monday or tuesday.
This is the first time dell's shipped out a pc for me on a weekday not preceeding a weekend

I think I'm going to be buying the Sony SR 590. One thing about it that slightly upsets me is that it has no separate keyboard keys for Home, End, Page Up/Down. I'm a student and do a lot of writing, and I always use the Home/End buttons, as they're very convenient. I see that on the SR, I would have to use theim with the function key and the arrows. I've never done that before but I guess I'll get used to it. I was wondering if anybody can tell me if this is going to be uncomfortable or if its all in my head.

My cat knocked a glass of juice over and some splashed onto the keyboard of my month old SR290.
Multiple sticky keys and some just aren't working.
I took a couple of sticky keys off to clean with rubbing alcohol and a q tip and now they don't work (they did before cleaning

I'm using a Vaio Z, which is docked when at my desk into a 24" monitor and separate keyboard and mouse.
Which is great, but I miss the Z's keyboard, which is just fantastic.
Then I saw the Vaio JS in a store, and it has a wonderful scrabble style keyboard, similar to the Z.
Just a simple USB keybaord, but very nice indeed, even has an S1 button.

I have been lurking the forums for a bit and finally decided to register. If there's a place that can answer my questions I'm quite certain it's here.
I am looking at getting a Sony BZ series here in the USA. I can't help but notice most of the pictures of the computer have a weird looking keyboard with two extra keys next to the enter key

Ive noticed that the finish on Vaio`s seems to fade very quickly both on the keyboard and on the general black plastic areas,
has anyone used any of these keyboard protector skins as they look good to stop the keyboard fading as well as stopping dust and other bits going behind the keyboard.

where I can find a "TPU" keyboard protector for the Sony Vaio VPC-Z (EU model?). The only one I can find is on eBay but it's only for US models (different enter button) so won't fit... I know this keyboard is really going to become shiny quick because it really holds onto oil badly. It's a lovely keyboard to use, but it really picks up oil a lot more than my older Z21.

i have a sony vaio vgn-fs315E. I brought it as spares or repairs. i got a xp home disk to install a new operating system.
When i put the disk in and start up the comp everything goes fine untill it says "press any key to install from disk" or whatever it says. So i press any key but nothing happens. I tried like every key on the keyboard but it just dont want to register that i have pressed a key.
Do you think this is a keyboard problem or something more serious?

I have to an extent with both the Z9 and X9 at the moment - although probably more with the X - but there's sometimes a sort of sticky 'clicking' when the keys are depressed which leads me to believe that some of the domes are not seated correctly. I have no idea how the domes are arranged for the Z11 - I'm presuming due to weight reasons it won't be a monolithic sheet, but a separate dome per key - but it is definitely happening on more than one key. Rapid typing doesn't seem to be an issue, but the audible feedback causes me to slow down typing.
I'm weighing up the pros and cons of returning the machines for replacements.

I just got my sony Vaio CTO Z series. I have just used for 3 hours and I can see oily patches on my key area with finger print. I tried heading Sony center to check on there display set, it's horrible as if few thousand people has touched the laptop, all the oily finger print.
Are there any solution to this? I dare not want to use alcohol because it seems the keyboard are quite frigale.

I think most of you already looked at various cases and sleeves to protect your expensive new Z, but what about the keyboard?
Dont you hate it when the keys get all shiny with normal use?
I was of getting clear keyboard stickers for my new Z:
Is this truly the best option? How are you planning to protect the keys?

I'm trying to find a keyboard cover for my SR.
I found a few websites when I googled "sony sr keyboard cover".
Any reliable recommendations you guys can give me?
Any is there anything I need to worry about/look out for when purchasing one?
Or is it simply, "a cover is a cover"?

I would really love to know how to remove the keyboard from my Vaio SR.... I believe the Wireless card is shot... And it's refurb'd so its out of warranty...
I believe the Z and SR have similar designs so if anyone knows how to specifically remove the keyboard I would be forever grateful!

All of a sudden, my keyboard and touchpad stopped working under windows7
It's on Windows 7 - POST, BIOS and other out-of-windows screens are ok. Also WEB-button pre-Windows browser responds to keyboard keys properly.
Function/DISPLAY OFF keys are not working either - however, if I close the lid (W7 goes to sleep), then wake it up afterwards, function keys work fine (brightness, volume etc.) - sadly, still, the keyboard input does not.
Already tried:
- system restore
- vaio care recovery
- complete, clean reinstall of the W7 Ultimate
- removing keyboard/touchpad drivers, reinstalling, updating them

the keyboard backlight goes off after about 30 seconds of non-use of the keys. The trackpad movement doesn't keep it lit.
i can re-light by touching any key, but this presents two issues:
1.) the first keystroke is entered. (i guess i can use the shift key)
2.) more important, the screen brightness seems to react to ambient light, so the keyboard's light ends up making the screen pulsate.
I couldn't find a specific reference, although hard to believe. But then again, the humongous threads are hard to search effectively.

Has anyone here been using their FW notebook's keyboard intensively and could share their experience?
Pretty much every review I've read praises the keyboard - but does the keyboard hold well over time?
I spend most of the work day typing, and would like to know if FW is an option for me.

My Vaio Z11 laptop came with a German keyboard layout (QWERTZ), as I purchased it from Austria. I'm using English as the input language and I sometimes have trouble remembering where some punctuation marks are.
Can I replace the keyboard? If yes, how doable is that by me? If so, how? Where can I buy the replacement English Q keyboard? (Actually, where can I find spare parts for Vaio Z series?)

I have just bought a Vaio VPCF117HG (top of the line) here in Singapore and the advertising said it had a backlit keyboard.
I get it home and discover to my horror there is no backlit keyboard. This is on certain overseas models only. I would not have purchased this if I knew.
So, my next question is would it be possible to source one and replace the current one on my computer. There's the question of powering it and connecting it to the light sensor that would switch it on and off.
This is really for a tech but surely there would be someone out there who would know whether this is possible or not.

how to take apart the keyboard on the Sony Vaio TX.
[url]
However, the keyboard 'came-away' from the rest of the latop so fast upon lifting it up I did not get a real chance to see how it actually connects to the laptop.
I am now having a real problem connecting the keyboard back to the laptop. Does anyone have any high resolution images of how their laptop is connected or how it should be done?

Was a happy owner of the new Z (HDD model) and was looking to do some work with installing a new Intel X25.
The disassembly process went fine at first but things fell apart on the 2nd go (when I did to open it the 2nd time to fix the rubber part holding the HDD)....
