Mar 21, 2009fairly old Vaio laptop. Can barely get past start up screen. Half the time all i get is black screem when i turn it on. I can get into windows though after a few attempts. I would like to completely reformat it, preferably putting on xp or even the new Windows 7. But i dont have any boots discs. So i don't know how to go about doing it. A breif step by step on how to wipe my laptop would be perfect.

Feb 21, 2009I am on the verge of buying a Vaio Z690 CTO but have one final questions, if you had to choose between black, or premium carbon fiber, which would you pick? I am nervous that with black, I would feel as if I should have opt'd for Premium and if I get premium, I am nervous the notebook won't look as classy. I have seen black at the Sony style store however and it looked very classy.

Feb 9, 2009i have a problem with my 2 year old vaio sz. Since some weeks, screen turns black in irrregular intervals. The system is still available, but i can't see anything on the screen. The only solution is to push the power button an switch to standby mode. Afer pushing the power button again, the system comes up again and the screen turns on! The problem only occured in battery mode.
I tried nearly everything to fix the problem. I reinstalled Windows XP, tried different power management settings... nothing worked.

Aug 23, 2009I just recently purchased a used VGN-Z520n from ebay.
I noticed there is a small dent on the carbon fiber casing on the Keyboard.
I want to replace that part, but I actually like the black color on the new Z series. Is there a way I can purchase just the Black keyboard housing and replace it on my vaio?

May 17, 2009If my laptop turns on, it either freezes, BSODs, or black screens (could be anywhere from the windows loading logo to doing some work on word, etc.)
And if it doesnt turn on, well it does; the hdd light goes on (for a second), same with the battery light (the battery light is fine though), but the screen is black; i can hear hdd activity though and if i throw a cd in there, it spins properly and whatnot, but it just doesnt do anything past the blank screen.
An external monitor doesnt work, and reformatting seemed to have helped abit, but then it just got worse 2 days ago; I can't get past the black screen after I turn it on.
I'm 99% sure its a hardware problem, and I'd be willing to replace whatever it is if I knew what it was, but I dont know if it's the hdd, or the ram, or the video card, etc.
I've also taken the laptop apart; so reseating the ram and hdd doesnt work.
Sony :: Black Carbon Fibre Or Black Plastic Lid Of My New Z
Nov 25, 2009I just got a brand new customized Sony VGN-Z890FKB. The sales representative of the website where I bought it from, states all their models come with the Premium Carbon Fibre lid, however I find it very hard to tell the difference between the two.
Nowhere it is indicated that this one has the carbon fibre lid. On the side of the box it says B (Black) so I got confused.
The lid is black indeed, if I look close enough I see small silverish specs mixed with the black, even on the bottom side of the laptop. The palmrest/keyboard area is a darker black without silverish specs in it.
A friend of mine has a Sony SZ and there you can tell it is a black Carbon Fibre lid (black with a hint of purple in it - when you angle the laptop from one light source to the other + you somewhat see horizontal lines on the lid of the Sony SZ).
Also if you look carefully on the sonystyle site, you see those same horizontal-like lines on the Carbon Fibre Black lid of the Sony Z contrary to the Black plastic lid.
How can one tell whether his Sony laptop has a carbon fibre or black plastic lid?

Apr 23, 2009My VGN-S1XP has today developed two unusual black spots on the screen, one I found this afternoon, and the other has only appeared within the last few hours.
But these are NOT dead pixels, the pixels are functioning correctly, and when viewed from different angles this is obvious.
The marks appear to be behind the pixels, at first when there was just one I wondered if an insect had found it's way in there. The other spot however, is decidedly not insect shaped

Jan 8, 2015I now have a grey screen on booting and it is trying to reboot itself.It started with lines then dots. I managed to boot OK once after this but now just a grey screen. I believe I have managed to start diagnostics pressing Fn while starting as I heard beeps which kept repeating until I pressed Y, yes, I heard the sounds, I guess. But I can only see a grey screen so do not know the results of the tests. There are no beeps or diagnostic lights staying on or flashing to tell me anything. I had this problem before but cannot remember what I did if anything to remedy it.

Dec 14, 2014I have an hp compaq nx6330 (ex856av) using windows xp. last may, the screen turned black (i was told i need to replace the lcd), so i decided to use a generic external monitor. a couple of months ago, i had to have it repaired and the repair guy said he'll upgrade the OS to windows 7. things were working fine for about a month then the screen (external monitor, since the laptop screen is dead) starting having vertical gey lines (the entire screen). i played with the resolution and i was able to get rid ofthe lines a couple of times. are the lines due to using windows7? can this particular model handle any OS besides the one (windows xp) it came with?

Dell Inspiron 17r N7110 :: Not Boot Any Longer - Gray Blue Screen
Dec 6, 2014My son's laptop has decided to be a jerk and not boot any longer.
It turns on then goes to a gray blue screen. I can get into set up the usual way and have tried other buttons but usually get a warning in regards to the hard drive when we try boot mode.
The laptops key board basically doesn't work either so I use an external one
I am thinking Hard Drive is fried....

Aug 17, 2014I have a T440s and have an issue with the camera. It seems to turn on (little green light comes on) when I access the Windows 8 camera app or any other app (like skype), but I do not see anything out of the camera except for a gray screen with a camera icon that has a bar through it. It looks like the camera needs to be activated somewhere but where to look. I have checked the driver and it seems to be fine (no yellow warning icon), I even unistalled and reinstalled the latest camera driver from the support website but that does not change anything.

Jan 15, 2010I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.
Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.
So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.

Mar 2, 2010i have my dad has a sony vaio and about a month ago the screen just went black. we just now decided to fix it and so i thought it may have been the monitor so i bought a new monitor and it ended up not fixing it. but when u boot it up all u can see is sony vaio but it is very faint and u can hardly see it and u cant see anything after that.

Jul 4, 2009I don't know whats the diference (besides the price), between VAIO TZ295N & VAIO TZ395N. Specs in all the websites I've checked say they have exactly the same components: Intel coreduo 1.33Ghz 2GB RAM DVD-RW and 64GB SSD Hardrive. I was wonder if the diference might be in the hard drive interface, with the TZ295N being PATA and TZ395N being SATA.

Mar 22, 2010Am planning to get a sony laptop for me. The design simply rocks I am getting mixed reviews about cw and E series. But i made up my mind to get one.
My budget is aroung 40000rupees. Thats around 800$. So suggest me a better one between these two for occasional moderate and less(mosltly) demanding games. I dont care whether its 14 or 15 inch.
Am looking at lower end versions of both the models.
Only difference is CW uses Nvidia Geforce 310 and the E series uses some Radeon 5000 series one. CW has 14 inch screen whereas E series has a 15.5 inch screen. In the models which i am looking at both have matte finish and both has WXGA:1366 x 768 VAIO Display.
which one should i go for. whether the screen quality will be on par to Inspiron one atleast? ( I dont need HD).
