Sony :: Vaio Z Vs SRCompare Thread
Jul 16, 2009
I've been looking at both of these for my next laptop... as well as possibly the ASUS U80V. The main problem I have is the battery leakage problem they both have, which defeat the purpose of their long lasting battery. I'm really not sure what to do as this is the only drawback or I would order one this week.... any further information would be appreciated, but I try to keep up to date in the specific thread.
I know the Z is quite a big price jump from the SR, but they are similar in appearance (different materials though)... I can't seem to justify which one would be worth it.
Differences I have noticed.
-Z is lighter (uses carbon fiber and other light materials)
-Z has 2 graphic cards (use integrated for longer battery life)
-Z has the better screen supposedly?
-EDIT*** Z does NOT have lighted keyboard
Please help me understand other differences that I have overlooked and please expand if you could on any I have already mentioned.
Really just looking for a 2.4ghz or greater processor, atleast 4gb RAM, bigger than 100gb hard drive, 5+ hours of battery life (surfing and music).... occasional game of counterstrike/DOD source, nothing crazy. It MUST be quiet and not overheat....

When Installing the Sony Drivers, it is NECESSARY to install 01, 02, and 03, in that order (and it may be necessary to run 01 as an administrator). Otherwise you may not have functioning FN keys and other anomalies.
System Drivers
01 - Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver v8.0.1.1
02 - Sony Shared Library v5.5.0.10160
03 - Sony Notebook Utilites v1.0

I want to install Windows 7 on my UK Sony VGN-Z11VN, however, cannot find the Windows 7 drivers inc Globetrotter WWAN driver.
People are discussing newer Z models in other threads and cannot find much info about installing it on the Z11 and I'm sure lots of Z11 owners also want to install Windows 7.
Therefore I'm creating this dedicated thread for us Z11 owners how to install Windows 7.

I am starting this thread in hopes of getting to the root cause of the battery drain found in the VAIO Z-series (among other lines I've been told).
Battery drain here is defined as the amount of battery the laptop loses when turned completely off and left to sit for a period of time. If the battery is removed, the loss is insignificant: 1-2% in a week's time. If the battery is left in, the loss is significant: 5-10% in a 24 hour period.
I am here to try and determine what causes this loss. What I would like those who wish to participate to do is the following:
1. Charge your laptop to 100% (battery care must be disabled to do so).
2. WHILE THE LAPTOP IS PLUGGED IN, shut the laptop down completely (no sleep/hibernate/low power state, in other words, OFF)
3. Let the laptop sit unused for at least 24 hours
4. Just prior to starting back up, PLUG THE LAPTOP BACK IN, start it up and record your battery %
5. Post your battery loss here as well as your laptop's configuration
Keeping the laptop plugged in on shut down and start up removes the possibility of a large amount of juice being used for either process which has been documented to happen..

FW owners, post up your FW pictures and show everyone your set up. I noticed that there are no picture threads and lots of people would love to see user pictures and not just the googled pictures of the same looking FW just at different angles.

I'm about to get one of these beautiful laptops and while I wait I have been looking for accessories, like a case.
Maybe people could post what they have and where they found it.
This can be for anything, from mice to cases etc.

Us VAIO users will most likely have (and still do) experienced the common and annoying battery drain issue, which Sony has dubbed a 'feature'.
Sure, Lithium ion batteries do suffer some degrading when charged near 100% or fully discharged at 0%, but many here will have experienced the battery draining from 80% (Battery Care on) to 30% (a few days later), which, to everyone here, is NOT beneficial to the battery in any way............

I was asking about the difference between XBRITE-ECO and XBRITE-FullHD. To my surprise, the rep told me the XBRITE-FullHD is LED backlit (which I think it's not true). I ask her to confirm that and she came back with the same answer.

Does anyone have a link to a website or PDF describing how to properly open and disassemble a VAIO VGN-SZ75GN?
I have a VAIO VGN-SZ75GN, bought about 8 months ago, and now I want to exchange the built-in hard-disc with a solid-state disc.
I need some guide with illustrations/pictures, how to reach the disc

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.
Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.
So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

Just performed a successful XP downgrade on my Vaio Z520, but have noticed that on this copy of the Vaio Silver Desktop Theme/Appearance doesn't exist.
I had it on my SZ and loved it over the XP Blue. Is there a way to get it back? I still have the restore discs from the SZ.

I don't know whats the diference (besides the price), between VAIO TZ295N & VAIO TZ395N. Specs in all the websites I've checked say they have exactly the same components: Intel coreduo 1.33Ghz 2GB RAM DVD-RW and 64GB SSD Hardrive. I was wonder if the diference might be in the hard drive interface, with the TZ295N being PATA and TZ395N being SATA.

I'm wondering if the Blu-ray optical drive (Panasonic UJ-232A) of the (old) VAIO Z series will be able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series? I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to answer my question.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.

This thread is dedicated to unclewebb's utility ThrottleStop; its support and promotion. (thanking unclewebb profusely for coding it certainly doesn't hurt )
This is the real deal for any Gemstone Blue users who are throttling, especially those who can't undervolt.
It's surprisingly simple to use - open ThrottleStop.exe, accept the rather frightening warning (it's mostly for Dell users), then click the box next to Chipset Clock Mod.
That's it! Your system should be protected from future throttling incidences.
Tick the Minimize on Close button to send it to your notification area instead of the Taskbar (like RMClock).
(Angelwings, feel free to correct me if I've got this wrong)
If you want to view ThrottleStop's documentation without downloading the utility,

Am planning to get a sony laptop for me. The design simply rocks I am getting mixed reviews about cw and E series. But i made up my mind to get one.
My budget is aroung 40000rupees. Thats around 800$. So suggest me a better one between these two for occasional moderate and less(mosltly) demanding games. I dont care whether its 14 or 15 inch.
Am looking at lower end versions of both the models.
Only difference is CW uses Nvidia Geforce 310 and the E series uses some Radeon 5000 series one. CW has 14 inch screen whereas E series has a 15.5 inch screen. In the models which i am looking at both have matte finish and both has WXGA:1366 x 768 VAIO Display.
which one should i go for. whether the screen quality will be on par to Inspiron one atleast? ( I dont need HD).

im planning on using the laptop for videos, photoshop and a bit of gaming, maybe even a bit more gaming :-)
The Vaio F Series only has 330M Nvidia Graphics Card with i7QM and up to 8GB of Ram and up to 256GB SSD.
The E Series has ATI 5650 (a less powerful version, reduced clock speed) combined with a i5 520M with up to 6Gb of Ram and up to 500GB of HDD ? Why can i not choose SSD ?

if I can use the AC Adapter of a Vaio TT on the Vaio Z. The standard AC Adapter that comes with the Vaio Z is of 19.5V and the one for the Vaio TT is of 16V, which I don't know if it's enough for the Vaio Z to function properly or if there could be any problem or damage. Both machines have batteries of 10,8V.
I have an undervolted Vaio Z by the way (last multiplier at 0.9875) so I don't know if this could help in any way for my Z to work ok with the TT AC Adapter.

I'm not looking to debate the geforce vs quadro performance nor do I want people to tell me to wait for the 9m series cards, just a couple quick questions.
Does the m1730 have a docking port? From what I can find, I'm thinking it does not. For that matter, does the m6300 have one? I think it does...
Can an 8800gtx from an m1730 be put into an m6300? If not, I'll be fine with the 3600m, but I prefer geforce cards.
If yes, where can you get an 8800gtx and how much do they cost? I've seen people saying anything from over $2000 to $700.... which is quite a difference.
I guess while I'm at it, are there any other huge issues that I've maybe overlooked? I'm thinking about things like the huge LCD problems that everyone experienced with light leakage and whatnot on the m170/9300 series and even overflowing into the next gen stuff iirc.

even though this computer is hot to the touch and she is having a few issues with it i figure id put it threw its paces for you guys. id just like to mention before hand that we have the WLED screen (1366x768)
out of the box running with dell's 9.4 drivers it ran a 5060 in 3dmark 06
i ended up having to down grade the drivers to dell's 9.2 because i was unable to over clock with the 9.4's. however even with the 9.2 the only program that would work is AMD GPU clock tool. i was able to test it up to 749 mhz core / 945 mhz mem. it works like a charm, no artifacting or anything. with just one run threw 3dmark 06 it brought the temp up to 76C. after an 45min of looping the test the temps peaked and leveled out at 83C.
it idles around 60-63C at these clocks (stock idle is about 8C cooler)
anyways here are the results for 3dmark 06
dell 9.4 drivers= 5060
dell 9.2 drivers= 5004
dell 9.2 drivers OC(749c/945m) = 5520
i have yet to test if its stable at higher clock then these. i feel as though it still has a small amount of room left, maybe another 20 mhz on ether . i haven't had time to test this out yet though. im probably going to try undervolting the CPU and see if that brings down the temps any. ill report back with the results from both the CPU and GPU when i get a chance to do it all.
this is a spiffy little computer, im sure that once we resolve the screen and power supply issues with dell that my wife will be happy with the unit.

I am starting this thread for the discussion of Windows 7 x64 installation on the M1530. Please limit the thred to 64 Bit only.
I just took delivery of my 1530 this morning and now have it exclusively running Win7x64. So far, so good on basic functionality, but I hope to delve into performance and gaming issues tomorrow. I will be running benchmarks in order to compare 7 and Vista.
So far I have only installed Symantec AV 2009 Gaming Edition and Steam. Everything else is either stock to Win7x64 or came down via Windows Update.

I figured most of us all had/have something in common which is why we bought a XPS. Therefore, I am interested in other laptops being used by fellow XPS owners and past XPS owners.
Let me begin im the owner of a M1330 (specs in sig) since 2008 it has been reliable but lately it has been running pretty hot. Plus I figured its time for a change since I know most laptops begin to act up after a year.
This week I got a Sony Vaio CW series which im using to type this, specs are 4gb ram, 500gb hd, 2mp cam+mic, Intel i5 processor, blu-ray, bluetooth, 14" screen.
It will suffice for now im not as excited about it as I was when I received my XPS but its nice. Really hoping that Dell can make a super reliable XPS 13" in the future

First things first is if you have a 3810 you might want to check when it was manufactured as some have overheating microphone lead issues:

Click here to see if yours is affected: [url]
Now that the bad bits out of the way lets move on shall we....
Link to the different configs you can get:
[url]
Personally for the price I would go for the LX.PE602.045 version. Its about £480 and for the price it a steal. Performance wise it will cope with day to day tasks and even more resource hogging programs like Photoshop [url], yes I know its not an ACER 3810 but it uses the same Intel SU4100 CPU. As you can see its competant enough).
And the 8 hours battery life!! You can get a USB GPS receiver and use it as a Sat Nav system, with 8 hours battery life you'll be fine

I was looking for a luxury ultraportable and considered the Mac Air, Sony Z, Dell Adamo, Asus VX3 Lamborghini, and HP Voodoo Envy 133. I know, Voodoo's future is uncertain.
But I just bought a new Voodoo Envy 133 anyway because the price was right, and I couldn't justify the extra cost of the others.
The best commercial review I found was this:

Any real world user reviews?
I'll be able to add mine when my Envy 133 arrives this week. And as soon as Windows 7 arrives, that will be installed also!
