what i could upgrade on my laptop,
its currently:
Intel Centrino 2 Core2Duo P8400 2.26Ghz
2 gig DDR2 ram (1 dimms)
250 gig hdd 5400 RPM
Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT 512mb ddr2 graphics

Just got a Vaio Z, which I love in many ways -- except for the trackpad. My old Dell E1505 had a trackpad in which it would scroll more or less based on how quickly you moved your finger up/down the right side of it. So, you could use it to get to the top/bottom of very large documents in a single fast swipe.
Meanwhile, the Z's trackpad only seems to move a fixed number of lines with each swipe. This is a HUGE downgrade, as it takes forever to move through a large document.
Is there any way to get variable-line scrolling working on a Z trackpad?

I failed to realise the laptop doesn't use S1 socket
Quote:
I am putting it on this thread because of the HP AMD Processor owners.
I like to say something potentially interesting to ZM/RM Processor owners.
First remember QL?
It is actually AM2 socket compatible.
Meaning it is possible to load Desktop AM2 Processor onto your laptops someone has done it..............

problems getting Dell to tell me what I can or can't upgrade. It seems they will only let me replace parts.
Here is what I have:
Dell E1705
Core 2 Duo T5200 1.60Ghz
2 Gig of Ram
100Gig 7200 RPM
Nvidia Go 7800 (Before it was an X1400 but Dell changed it out after a request)
This is a system that replaced my old one through the warranty but I feel the need for more power out of it.

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM on my E1705. I already bought the 2500FX GPU, and I just want to do it all in one go. However, Dell's website is very confusing. I'm not sure WHAT Ram is compatible with my machine. All the RAM they have listed says 'For so and so computer', and I'm looking to use my Dell Account to buy the parts, So I just need a little help with this. Hopefully exchanging my card and my RAM will fix my NMI: Parity Errors when I'm playing World of Warcraft.

I've been searching around, but haven't found much info on upgrading some components of the 8920...I'll have to admit that my search skills are not top notch...
I'm leaning towards the 8920-6030 model, but there's a few things I'd like changed.
Can the CPU be upgraded? I'm thinking about slapping a T9x00 in there. Maybe a T9500 instead of the T8100. I know the CPU here isn't much of a bottleneck, but I'm a nut.
Can the GPU be upgraded? I looked at the manual that was posted here on the forum, and it showed a "GPU Socket". Does that mean I can pull out the 9500M and stick something like a 8800M GTX in it's place?

1) My processor is a P7350. I want to upgrade to P9400/P8600 in the future. Can I buy these processors in the open market and install it myself? Or do I have to send it to the Acer support office? Will my warranty become void?
2) Can I use XP on the 5930G? Vista and I don't agree.

Just looking for a few opinions on how smooth upgrades are on a Mac...Not routine system updates, but more like say, Leopard to Snow Leopard.
Any time I have ever done a major upgrade on a Windows machine, like from XP to Vista or reinstalling Vista to get rid of bloatware, the system(s) just jave never been as reliable or as smooth. I have no idea why, it's just something I've noticed anytime I've done any major changes to the initial operating system installation.
I'm eying the new 13" Macbook Pro, and want all the improvements of Snow Leopard, but I don't know if I should wait for it to be released and get it on the system by default.

I just bought the Intel X9000 processor and was wondering if the processor alone will improve my graphics processing a little without getting the 8800m GTX card. I really do not want to pay for card with can cost as much as a new laptop. I got the processor under 500 dollars. Right now I installed Batman: Arkham Assylum and it plays good but there is room to get better on the response time. With the existing graphics card the game runs only with a slight lap but nothing that takes away from it. I am sure any online activity will be more prominent.

I just received a M6400 as a replacement for my damaged M90 and other than it having the 4GB of memory it's the most basic configuration. Harddrive is only 150GB.
It'll be used for some internet stuff, some gaming and at times at work running UG-NX.
If you'd be doing any upgrades, what would you do? I've never upgraded a laptop after I've received it and am not quite sure what would be reasonably easy and affordable.

I noticed that the majority of users here that are trying to upgrade their "unsupported" notebooks are upgrading from 64-bit or going from 32-bit to 64-bit.
I was wondering if anybody had problems upgrading (using clean install) from 32-bit to 32-bit?
I will try to upgrade my notebook (Vaio vgn-FZ290) next week. Im going from vista home premium 32-bit to Win7 Professional 32-bit. I will attempt to use Win7 Update's drivers, original vista 32-bit drivers, and modified drivers from laptopvideo2go for my NVIDIA GeForce 8400m GT.

I've got an old VAIO S170 that I'm interested in upgrading. However, information has been hard to come by (many dead links since this is an old unit).
information regarding what I'd like to do:
1) Processor Upgrade
I've been told that I can upgrade my processor to a Pentium M 770. My question is, is this possible? The 770 I believe has a 533MHz FSB, while my current processor has a 400MHz FSB. Will the 770 work at 400MHz FSB? 533MHz? Is there a better processor you guys would recommend?
2) RAM Upgrade
I believe that the maximum amount of RAM that the system will support is 2GB. However, the only 1GB sticks of PC2700 172 pin RAM are pretty pricey. Where can I get cheaper RAM? Can I use newer/cheaper RAM?
3) HD Upgrade
I believe my model is one of the older units with an IDE HD interface. What's the fastest/best HD I can install?
4) Port Replicator/Docking Station
Anyone know the model # of the docking station/port replicator for this unit?

you have to be very careful with your HP notebook upgrade plans and that, because of BIOS limitations, processor upgrades are “usually” considered limited to what has been offered as OE. While there have been exceptions to this general rule of thumb, they're usually few and far between and risky if you don’t have the big bucks for experimentation. Well, I happen to be at NewEgg looking around a bit and came upon an interesting processor review.
TNO 821 at NewEgg has posted a review after upgrading his DV5t to a Intel P9500 (25w, 2.53GHz, 6MB L2 Cache). I’m not sure, perhaps this processor was actually offered at some time as OE, but it is not however currently listed in the HP Maintenance & Service Guide for this model. Therefore, it seems noteworthy to report that it appears that this processor is an viable upgrade option for DV5t owners so inclined. ….. and perhaps others as well.

I recently purchased a pavillion HDX18. standard configuration as far as I know, see below:
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
Memory: 4,096MB (2x 2,048 SODIMM)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Hard drives 2 x 232GB ST9250827ASS
This is a nice system, but I have some spare cash at the moment and am looking to improve it.
What has been suggested sofar is :
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad Processor QX9300 (2.53Hz) for the processor
UpGrading to 2x 4GB DDR2 or DDR3 DIMMs for a total of 8GB.
The graphics card I have been told can not be touched as it is a part of the mother board.
So the only components left where I feel I may get more speed is the drives. Saddly I have sofar been unable to find any information regarding the replacement of the current "disk drives" with solid state ones.

I have an M6400 on the way that I just purchased from the Dell outlet (about 1500 cheaper then buying new with the outlet coupon).
I'm curious if anybody has any idea if the Wireless 410 Bluetooth + Ultra Wide Band Combo is useful at all. It's only about 19 bucks more then the straight bluetooth card so will probably get it anyway.
Also anybody ever transfer a cell card from one laptop to another (hoping to take the one out of my 1720)? It's Verizon so I don't have a SIM card to worry about, and it's a 5720 and Dell lists a Sprint 5720 on the parts page for the M6400 so I am assuming no compatibility issues.

I got the Studio 1555 delivered to me two days back. Now I am thinking that I should have got two following additional upgrades:
1. Wifi 5300 card - I got the default 5100 one.
Should I upgrade to the wifi 5300 card? Will it be really worth it. I need to connect to my Wifi router for Internet. Will I be able to connect from more distance if I upgrade to the 5300?
2. HDD 320 7200 RPM - I got the 5400 RPM one.
Should I upgrade to the 7200 rpm and will it give better performance? Will games run better on the 7200 rpm one?

After getting my new 1410, I was interested in finding out just how much a hard drive and RAM upgrade would help. I have a 1410 SU2300 which came with 2 1GB DDR2 Dual Channel 667 Mhz 5-5-5-15 RAM modules and a 160GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. I made a list of fairly well known benchmarks, and ran them with various configurations using upgraded RAM (2 2GB DDR2 Dual Channel 800 Mhz 6-6-6-18 Corsair) and HDD (320GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4).
For testing, I wiped the drive, installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, and applied all the tweaks in the 1410 thread, including installing BatteryBar, RMClock, and a few programs of my own like Office 2007 and Dropbox along with the latest drivers for every component and all of the latest MS updates. Then, I installed the following programs for benchmarking:
PCMark Vantage x64 Professional - Overall performance indicator, provides scores for various areas of computer usage. Instead of running synthetic benchmarks, it runs scripts using standard Windows programs like Media Player and Internet explorer. Accurate and popular with repeatable results; probably my favorite benchmark.
PCMark Vantage x86 Professional - Same as x64 version, shown for 32 bit comparison – can only address 3.5gb of the 4.0 installed
Passmark Performance Test 7 – Synthetic overall benchmark, could not be completely run due to directX issues. Not very repeatable or accurate, I personally dislike it.
IOMeter – Hard drive benchmark, sends repeated IO requests and measures operations completed per second in various configurations. Reasonably repeatable, very accurate, much better at providing an overall performance indicator then synthetic sequential readwrite HDD benchmarks.
Everest Ultimate – Memory, CPU, and HDD benchmarking options. Not very repeatable or reliable.
Geekbench x86 – Memory & CPU benchmark. Somewhat repeatable, fairly inaccurate.
Geekbench x64 - Same as x86 version, allows for comparison between x86x64.
Crystal Disk Mark – HDD benchmarking program using various file sizes. Results given in MBs. Very accurate and repeatable, my favorite sequential readwrite testing program. Used 9 pass 1GB file settings.
3dMark 06 (3dMark Vantage couldn’t run) – 3d graphicsCPU benchmarking program. Repeatable, reliable, accepted standard.
HD Tune Pro – HDD benchmark, requires a non-window partition for write tests. Fairly repeatable and reliable, another ‘staple’ benchmark......................
