Jan 28, 2010I have had a 5920G for nearly a year and it runs great when it is plugged in. As soon as I unplug it when it is 100% charged, the battery runs out in like 30 seconds.

May 12, 2009Ma lappy will be 2 years old in august, but it seems battery alredy died.
I do carry it around quite a lot, but most of the time I work on AC power.
Few weeks ago I had to work on battery and to my surprise laptop went into hibernation in less than 5 minutes after power on. Filled back to 100% and tested -- battey indicator counted percents down to 0 literally inf front of my eyes.
Is there a way to determine battery status? Might be some cells that are damaged? Any Idea what might gone wrong?
Laptop has 2 year warranty, so it's still covered for few months, but I doubt that is also true for battery only.

Apr 7, 2009I bought this laptop 5 months ago and I have been monitoring it slowly deteriorating by battery life, it is a 6 cell 4400mAh battery and I use it every day, and make sure not to let it drop below 10% battery power as to not do full discharges and only partial.
I was getting 1hr 50 mins when I first got the laptop which may have been max or min settings I cant remember but anyways which seems not as good as the advertised 2.5 hr battery but I can understand that advertised and actual may differ and max, min would have had an effect. Anyways now after 5 months (Purchased early december) I am only getting 58 mins on full charge at minimum settings, now this does seem quite ridiculous and NHC is reporting 49% wear level.
My question is, is this normal for a Li-Ion Acer battery after 5 months, it seems quite bad to me, and all I can think is the laptop was left on the shelf for a while before i bought it, or that it is defective. I rang acer warranty support and I feel quite fobbed off with them saying this is normal and usage patterns and that their warranty for batteries only last 6 months and I should expect only to get 1/4 of the full charge i did when i purchased after 6 months. So acer is in the business of making low quality batteries?

Aug 28, 2009My concern with this is the fact that with the battery removed, there's going to be a big space underneath the laptop where the battery used to be that's just asking for a bunch of dust and dirt to come in. Is that an issue? Or am I mistaken in believing that removing the battery sounds like a bad idea?
Also, is it necessary to remove the battery if I intend on using the AC adapter most of the time, since the only time I'd be away from a wall jack would be when I travel. When I'm at home, I can easily just plug it into the wall rather than use up the battery.

Mar 17, 2012When I plugged in my adapter to charge my laptop, it didn't respond to it. The light on the adapter is on, but the battery just wont charge.
I changed the AC adapter as a Hardware problem, but I couldn't change the battery because it is built-in.
On the other side of problem - I mean as a Software problem :
1. I tried to restore the system -from Backup and Restore - till the first point but nothing happened except it restored the first password . . !
2. I tried to make a restore from Dell DataSafe local Backup, but the system said the adapter and the battery must both plugged where the adapter doesn't respond at all.
3. I tried with Ubuntu Operating System (Linux), when I thought that problem Might be from Windows 7.
4. I upgraded the BIOS drive.
5.. I set the BIOS setting to the default - F2
When I plugs the AC Adapter the percentage never reduce, but the hours remaining changes, exactly shows (829 hr and 48 min (20%) remaining).

Jan 28, 2015All of the sudden the battery stopped charging and the official dell AC Adapter, that shipped with the laptop, is listed as Unknown in the BIOS. I understand this happens because somewhere on the way the info from the pin that (for no good reason) identifies the AC adapter does not reach the charging circuit. This is supposed to be a safety mechanism (that no other manufacturer uses) that is obviously just an attack on off-brand chargers .The laptop is working fine (except for charging) as long as the AC adapter is connected.
What I did so far:
notice I'm out of warranty
try different power outlets
try different AC adapter
Check battery health (it's fine)
replace Power Jack
Voodoo

Jan 29, 2015I have an xps12 that doesn't recognise its adaptor, runs fine on AC but batter is now totally dead. I tried a different Dell 45W adaptor (borrowed) and it charged the battery, I then bought a cheaper 3rd part adaptor - which also worked for a week or so.
Now am back to unrecognised adaptor, no charging. BIOS is version AO8 but even if there is an update I can't install since my battery is on zero. Battery utility (Fn F3) indicates my battery is healthy and performing normally, but charging is disabled and I don't see any obvious way to enable it.

Prior to the installation of the new battery, the machine could only work with the AC adapter plugged in, raising the suspicion that the battery was defective. However, now that a new battery has been installed, the battery does not charge even whiles the AC adapter is stilled plugged in.

Mar 7, 2010Iv read a few posts online saying that Dell blocks people from using non dell power adapters on their machines by not letting those adapters charge the battery.
My issue is, I need a new power adapter AND a new battery.
I really don't wanna fork over $130 for a new 6 cell battery, Especially because on the dell site the reviewers themselves had given it a bad review saying the battery usually dies in a year or less.
That and my Budget is about $100 for both battery and adapter.
I need to find a battery that works, and an adapter that will actually charge the battery and keep the notebook charged.
This is basically a question out for Dell Inspiron users that have had this same issue and have had to replace the battery or the charger. If you guys could tell me what has worked for you and what has not, that way I can at least narrow down my options on chargers and batteries.
Id like to find a charger with the same volts as the dell charger has If I can't find a non official charger that works, could you guys at least point me to a less expensive site where I could buy the dell power adapter.
I would much rather just buy a charger and battery outside dell though because their products are by no means high quality and are in fact well overpriced.

Jul 22, 2013I have a had Dell XPS 15z for a around a year and a half and it very suddenly stopped charging whilst plugged in. I didn't notice until the low battery warning came on that the computer had stopped recognizing the battery or the charger. I rebooted and went on BIOS, I don't know much, but I noted that it didn't see an adapter plugged in and it said that the battery is functioning normally. I've plugged the adapter into other laptops and it worked so it isn't the adapter.

Jan 2, 2010I have a Dell XPS m140 when I use the ac adapter without the battery inserted the laptop powers up fine. When I insert the battery and the ac adapter the adapter turns off after a few seconds. If I unplug the ac adapter and do it again the same thing occurs. When I remove the battery and use the ac adapter after I unplug it from the wall the laptop will power up again. I don't know if the ac adapter is not strong enough to charge the battery and boot up. I tried just having the battery in and not turning on the laptop to see if the battery would charge and the ac adapter turns off after a few moments. Can a battery have a short in it to cause this or is the adapter finally going south? I tested the adapter and it shows 19.5v. when the adapter light goes off it tests 0. After I unplug it and replug it, it shows 19.5v again.I don't know where to go from here, new battery or new adapter.

Apr 23, 2009I have had this laptop for 2 years and after the first year I had to replace both battery and adapter.
The first generic adapter I got was fine until the cable split (my fault as I was wrapping the cord around the brick).
I got the second generic from the same place I got the first.
I bought the new one last month and since then I have sporadically received a message that the adapter wasn't OEM and that it wouldn't charge the battery.
It would get back to charging after a reboot or stand by.
Now I have tried everything but it won't get back to charging the battery.
I did a search here and found others with the same problem (different dell laptops) solving the issue by flashing the bios.
Can anybody point me to the correct file I should download for my laptop as well as explain what should be done to flash the bios

One day,it will work,then the next day,nothing. I keep getting an error code saying that I need a65w adapter ,which the new one is. Jan 20, 2013I received an Inspiron 17r SE and have had absolutely no technical problems running it. The only thing that i don't understand is why my battery adapter whines whilst in sleep mode. This never occurs when the laptop is shut off or running but only when in sleep. The high pitched whine seems to oscillate with the blinking white light on the front of the laptop.

Nov 8, 2014I have a Inspiron n5110 laptop and for about a month it had a problem. It works fine (battery charges as usual) until a power drop (even for a second) occurs. When power comes back battery does not start to charge. It gives a error message "AC power adapter type cannot be determined"...
I suspected the fault may be with the power charger/adapter and searched for new one in the store. But there I came to know compatible adapter for my 15R laptop is a 90W adapter. [URL] ....
And I got a 130W adapter when buying this laptop. So I thought they must have switched it by accident and it didn't bother me since it worked fine until now. But according to store, the adapter I'm using now does NOT supposed to be compatible with N5110

I have a working 90W dell adapter from my friend and i tried it to my laptop. It also gives the same error as above except my laptop identifies it as a 90w adapter and asks for a 130W adapter instead(When my adapter is plugged-in it doesn't even identify it as 130W as you can see from the image).

Jul 16, 2014This is not "battery pluged-in not charging" issue. That issue is software related and can be easily changed the option whether Life or Health of battery you concerned by LEM. I'm one of Y580 owner that facing that issue that the laptop cannot detect the AC adaptor anymore after performing the Battery Guage Reset".
For example: URL...I was tring to search for the solution, but as you know there is nothing without send it back to service center.The tempolary solution I was using is,
1. Remove the battery (if laptop is powering on, then shutdown it first).
2. Remove the AC adaptor from wall ac receptacle.
3. Once the laptop is completely powered down, plug AC adaptor to your laptop and wall AC receptacle.
4. After a few second, insert battery back into the Laptop. And then, the battery will be chaged as usaul.
5. You need to repeat step 1-4 above every time you unpluged the AC adaptor.
By the way, I have been living with that issue for almost 2 years, until it was already out of waranty in June 2014. So rightnow, I can do whatever I want without worrying the waranty. I was trying to teardown my Y580 to find the dead components. I gusted that the issue may be from charging circuit. Afetr opened the chassis, I found that the Y580 uses BQ24737 from TI to be the charging controller.
I cannot found the BQ24737's datasheet, but I was using BQ24735 instead, since, they have the same pinout with difference in optional functions. I found it. The dead one is the input MOSFET. It's shorted between Drain and Source!. That lets the voltage from AC adapter directly connected to Battery. And then, the AC adapter will be tripped with over current protection and the voltage is held to near zero. That's why we cannot plug the ac adapter with battery inserted for this case.
So far, after I replaced it with the similar rating MOSFET from old laptop, it works!. So, I can plug to charge my laptop as it should be without problem.the actual circuit shound not be exactly the same with datasheet. For the Y580, the input MOSFET (Q1 in datasheet and PQ302 in Y580) is P-Channel (AO4423), and it has the external circuitry to dive that MOSFET instead of U1. send it to service center to replace the new motherboard. If not, and you have electronic/soldring skill, you can do it by your self.
Tools needed,
1. Soldering iron (it will be easier for removing part from PCB, if you have 2 of them).
2. Equivalent electrical rating MOSFET.
3. Multimeter.
The different model, different location. Anyway, you can check whether it is the right MOSFET that need to be replace by,
1. Disconnect battrey from labtop
2. Using multumeter (ohm function) to measure the resistance between pin Drain and Source of the MOSFETs. The dead one must has very low D to S resistance (near 0Ohm) for both direction (D(+)<-->S(-) and D(-)<-->S(+)).
3. Search for the dead MOSFET's datasheet and then find/cross the new one from local supplier.
4. Just replace with the good one.

Feb 23, 2013I recently purchased a refurbished Dell Latitude D630 and everything was great. After a few months the laptop would every so often get a message saying:
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
It was ok after I fiddled with it and it would charge normally. Now the battery refuses to charge with my adapter and runs only on AC power. I assumed I just needed a new battery but then something weird happened. I used my girlfriends charger to charge my battery and it worked 2 times, but strangely after the last time her computer started getting the exact same message and hers was fine beforehand. Is the battery somehow draining the adapters? I've never heard of that happening before. What should I do?
